If you want to enjoy a little bit of OC history with great coffee this is the place for you. Located inside the historic bank building in the circle this stop boast high ceilings and beautiful windows. Everything on the menu is made well and offers some of the best coffee flavors in the world.
Adorable coffee spot thats a must see. Very unique enviroment that i havent seen in another coffee place. Staff are incredibly friendly and the drinks are memorable. Great spot to burn some time, go on a cute date, or get some work done. Solid amount of seating but is much less cramped then other spots nearby
The highest level coffee shop in all of orange county full stop. They have specialty single origin menu choices for both pour-over and espresso. Highly trained baristas that should all be in competitions. Their iced pour-overs are the move btw. Those do cost a bit more than your typical latte, and they take a moment longer, so I suggest you enjoy the vintage bank space and slow your pace a bit. Really enjoyable place to be.
Had the shaken maple latte and it was really good! Had to wait a little for a seat to be available (you seat yourself), but there are a good amount of chairs! There’s Wi-Fi available with the password posted on a placard on the wall. The café was really unique as it was located in what was previously a bank. Will definitely revisit next time I’m in town.
I was hesitant to have another coffee shop in the Plaza, but safe to say they are a great addition and staple of the downtown. The staff are great and for someone like myself that’s not into the background or logistics of coffee roasting. I can tell they put a lot of care and work into the coffee they serve. The staff are great and very knowledgeable in what they’re making for you and the owners are very nice and you can tell they want to be a part of the community.
This review was way overdue. I’m not a coffee fan, but have always wanted to have a go-to coffee spot to study, work, read, meet up with friends, and have some tea and matcha. I was thrilled when I found out there was a new coffee shop opening at the circle and was excited to visit. Orange is home and living in the area for a quite a while, I can easily say Play Coffee is the spot that was needed. The whole atmosphere of the Play is extremely unique and inviting. And the baristas are the best!! They have great tea options and Matcha lattes. My sister is a coffee junkie and has told me their coffee options are great too! I love Play Coffee and I’m so glad to call it my go-to spot.
Play ☕ Coffee has amazing beans & stellar "joe"☕... actually is really FUN here:)) The Family that operates is very genuine & really has desire 2 be part of Old Towne 🍊 Orange community. December 2024 Winter ❄️ ☃️ Wonder land in Circle 🟠 area. Special place... Holiday Decorations are Fantastic! Design is super relaxed & vibe goes well w/ all the many tasty Delights! Wow such cool culinary experience 🤙 Building 🏢 is a National Historic Landmark! Roof is incredible. Same wood left over from Hearst Castle & architecture. Amazing connection. No gold 🪙 plating tho. Instead has bold & still sum very colorful rosemaling paint 🎨 designs. Coffee ☕ defly has a lot of other delicious "play" N partners. Really cool choices....gonna take awhile 2 try them lol. Wonderful experience and people watching is stellar 🤙 Gotta check this place out! Very courteous interactions:)) We had no idea what we were walking in2...but needless to say we will be coming back to get super charged....often! Highly Recommend 👍 bSafebHappybWell 🤙
Great coffee selection! Really cute set-up. The music and noise aren't super loud, so it is a nice place to get some work done. A lot of college students go here to study. Free wifi. Random item of note: the non-handicapped stall in the women's restroom is quite small, so if you have a backpack or anything else with you it is an extremely tight fit.
Very good, rich coffee. I have had lattes here and they are great every time. Atmosphere is fun and modern, but in a historic bank. Pretty unique café experience
Play Coffee Orange is on the corner of Chapman Ave, residing in the previous Wells Fargo Bank Building in Old Town Orange. I have always loved their Fullerton location, and I was excited to see their new spot in Orange. Spoiler alert: it lived up to the hype! From the high ceilings with the original hanging light fixtures from 1969 to the vast openness, the design of this coffee shop is truly something else. For parking, there’s plenty of free street parking down the many roads off the roundabout, known as the circle for obvious reasons. From the vault, I always strongly recommend playing around with Play’s espresso tonics, especially if they have a natural on bar, like they did with Nomad’s Natural Nicaraguan when I went. The tonic water complements and highlights the fruity notes of the espresso more than milk - it’s the perfect refreshing and uplifting caffeinated iced beverage. I’ll definitely get it again in my next visit whenever I’m in the area!
Best coffees I’ve had in all LA! Superbe selection on the bean shelf as well! Perfect pour over, yuzu espresso tonic is 🔥
Laid back coffee hangout inside a historic building at the Orange Circle within walking distance of the water fountain, the Orange Library, and city hall. The menu is straightforward and it's pretty cool to see the staff working on the drinks in an open square.☕ Also, check out the art deco ceiling tiles, a timeless wonder still intact.
Competitively the best coffee in America in my opinion. The cafe is in a beautiful old bank - high ceilings, beautiful design, right on the major square. The design brought in by Play is both fun (expressive colors) and minimal. There are plenty of options for seating, but I wouldn’t call it very comfortable. I got the Volcano as a cappuccino and CHEFS KISS it’s delicious!
If you a coffee lover this is the place
First time in Orange County Downtown. Pretty cool place. We actually stumbled with this place walking and thought it was super original a Coffee Bar inside an old bank building. Lots of space to sit, love the ambiance feel like you were in an old train station. Service was great, I had questions about some of the coffees and they took their time explaining it to me. For food they only had pastries but for coffee and matcha lots of interesting options. They have beans from various parts of the World, but mainly Norway!!! We got really excited about this. We ordered a Volcano Latte and a regular latte. The Volcano latte had an explosion of flavors topped with a smoked salted foam out of this world. My new favorite. I will keep on coming to try more things while in town.
I love this coffee and this place comfortable
Amazing coffeeshop
Very friendly and entertaining baristas
Great Coffee and super friendly staff.
Amazing venue and good coffee
I've enjoyed the Fullerton location for a long time, and today (Match 21, 2023), they've opened up a new location on the Orange Circle, in the historic bank building. Great coffee, and a great new location.
Not sure when this opened, but it looks pretty new still. It took over the Wells Fargo bank that use to be at Chapman circle and, when you walk in it kinda still looks like a bank. Haha. But they have seats and their coffee is good!
Play coffee has the best locations & coffee in the state, by far. I have friends that come from Saudi Arabia and the only coffee they will buy out here is from Play
Such cool and unique vibes. Lots of seating, reliable steady wifi. I got the volcano latte hot: smokey and tasty.
This coffee shop is the best thing that has happened in Orange since I moved here 2 years ago. Great place to gather, and everyone working there is super nice - also: e s p r e s s o t o n i c ! ! I didn’t think I’d like it but I was delightfully wRoNg😍
This place is sooo cool! I love the space and the orange coffee was delicious, got me through a 6 hour drive back to Phoenix. The desserts are equally as tantalizing.
I used to travel to Fullerton for my favorite Lavender Latte! I'm so happy to have PLAY nearby. This is a wonderful coffee house!
Vibesssss and tasty tasty coffee this place is fantastic and clean and there isn’t up charge for almond or oat milk
Incredible location incredible selection. The best espresso tonic in the game.
Orange didn’t need another coffee shop, but this is a good one nevertheless. Volcano, shaken maple, and lavender lattes have all been good so far.
Best coffee in Orange Circle to my mind. Knowledgeable and friendly baristas, good selection of reputable roasters in bags, cool vibe.
Come here for dialed in single origin pourovers
Wow!!! What a gem, great place to work or study. Good quality coffee, drink variety is excellent.
I love everything about this place that is a great spot for a date with a playful vibe. Coffee from all over the world is awesome.
Fun coffee and tea shop in an old bank building... impressive tea selection.
I’ve been visiting this location many times since it opened and never had a bad experience. Can’t wait to go back again, always welcoming vibes and extremely underrated
Definitely a top spot for matcha in OC.
best service in coffie shop
Great coffee in a beautiful space. It's quite expensive though.
Best coffee in OC
Excellent service and incredible hospitality, dedicated staff here!
Really nice spacious atmosphere. Delicious coffee
Best coffee I had for a long time Super invirement friendly stuff
Best matcha around and friendly staff
Play made it to Orange. Psyched to have em here at the circle. Get that Volcano Latte.
Delicious Coffee in an old bank building 💯💰✔️
I don't know if there is food
Favourite study cafe in the circle! The Eiffel65 is an interesting and mellow drink, reminds me of camomile. Their teas are concentrated and refreshing. The genmaicha green tea, jasmine silver tip, and golden lily oolong are all great, especially the jasmine silver tip. The coffee is great, the volcano latte has a nice salty compliment to it and the cardamom latte is a nutty and cozy drink. Their coffees are on the acidic side. For pastries, the cookie and vegan donuts was delicious! They also have cute merchandise! On the downside, I wouldn’t recommend their Uji matcha latte since I could barely taste any matcha and was mostly milk. In the mornings, there’s a very friendly and relaxing atmosphere with friendly staff. I’d recommend coming in the mornings as it’s not crowded and more quiet.
I had an amazing experience here. The coffee selection is insanely high quality. They had a Sous-Vide processed (hadn't even heard of that before) Panama Gesha on drip, if that tells you anything. The staff are all-stars. The owner is crazy knowledgeable, incredibly kind and a disciplined hard worker. If I lived near Orange, I'd be here everyday.
Been going here for years, first as a Chapman student and then a resident. Great drinks, service, and the vibes are great for studying. I always end up getting a lot done here! Be sure get a good spot early in the day if you plan to stay a while as it's popular.
Got their most popular drink — the volcano latte! Had a really nice and smoky flavor! The coffee wasn’t as strong, but it was still very tasty. Other drinks that we tried including a vanilla latte (with house made syrup!) and a regular latte. This is an excellent place if you need to do work—plenty of seating, outlets, and snacks from colossus bakery!
This is a REALLY COOL coffee shop. Even though it’s massive, it’s not loud, the staff was super friendly, and the coffee was great!
Stellar coffee - ordered two different items from their pour over menu. Plus they have actual relationships with roasters around the world that showcase (both on PO and retail) quality light roasts and highlight producers. And shoutout to Leon for the hospitality! Helped me track down the coffee on retail that was calling my name.
Great ice matcha! Love love love the ceiling of the building! So beautiful
Great vanilla latte! Staff was really nice and the building it’s in is super cool.
Quite literally THE best coffee around! Used to live down the street from Play and drank it every day. Now I make the drive on my days off to get it because I’m actually ruined for any other coffee shop. The espresso tonic has my heart ❤️.
A great addition to the circle! I would say they have some of the best coffee in the area. Their specialties are pour overs and espresso. They use pretty exclusive beans so be ready to pay the premium but I'd say it's worth it. The baristas are great and they make good suggestions based on your preferences - no up-selling either! If you want to treat yourself, then go here! Also, the baristas are great overall - tip'em well y'all :) Now, this place is in the old Wells Fargo building. It feels cavernous and empty while also over-crowded. The few tables available are usually full. if you can snag a space, you can for sure enjoy working or chatting here though.
Great coffee options! Lattes are unbelievable and pull great espresso shots. I love the atmosphere of the shop. The fact that they kept much of the decor from the bank is incredible. Give this place a go!
This place has some of the best coffee that you can’t get anywhere else. Their espresso bar has a good rotation with a variety of different flavor profiles and high quality beans. You may get a specialized drink such as the volcano latte one week that may have a slight different flavor profile then then a couple weeks later, but without loosing any quality in the coffee served there. It just has to do with keeping good moral values.
The bank they took over made this into one of the coolest cafe spaces I have seen. It's probably going to be a sightseeing destination. Plus, a lot of the baristas here are some of the best baristas I know. Play has the best espresso tonic I've had and I learn about new coffee stuff whenever I visit.
Easily the best coffee shop in the circle. Baked goods are impeccable, coffee is perfect, vibe is right. Top marks.
Quality coffee that is considered carefully and it’s nice to have variation of roasters local and internationally. The space is beautiful and the baristas have been lovely in my experience! Absolutely recommend :)
I haven't been to Play Coffee before so I went with friends for the first time today. I had an iced shaken maple and a cookies and cream donut which were both really good! I heard the volcano latte is good so I'm looking forward to trying it the next time I visit.
The interior of this place was once a bank, and in fact, it was one of the first banks in the Orange circle. Enough to make me smile. The wifi here is free and strong. I've used the wifi in this place to browse on social media. The atmosphere is calming, and it's not too bad. People come and go to do a lot of things, and this place is pet friendly. They even have the most interesting menu options, such as yuzu espresso shots. I think that's what it's called? As someone who is part-East Asian, I can promise you that it's unique to see an East Asian fruit turned into espresso shots.
Lots of good options for beans (e.g. sey, prolog), pour overs, and espresso, but very, very pricey. I like the location in the orange circle, and the building is great, and the employees are friendly, but I can get very high quality coffee beans at a few other specialty cafes for a more reasonable price. I come here nonetheless to get beans when in dire need, and they at least do throw in a pour over with purchase of beans.
Me hizo sonreír.
This place was cool . Walked in for the first time today .. it used to be an old bank so I loved how It looked obviously very spacious ! Plenty of seating. You can still see where the tellers would sit behind the bulletproof glass lol . The coffee spot itself looks cool . Tried the volcano iced . It’s a little pricey 7 dollars for the drink and it wasn’t bad but it didn’t taste 7 dollars worth . Coffee isn’t strong . A little milky . Didn’t really get the Smokey and salty notes as much . It grew on me after drinking it a bit but still nothing wow 🤯
Tried volcano latte and mocha latte. Both were delicious. Street parking is good across the streets. Place is very spacious. Mostly good for students and work meet up space.
We drove out to visit the coffee shop. Be prepared to drive around for a few for Parking. The coffee shop is located inside an old bank, very spacious location. We got an iced chai latte and caramel latte. Caramel latte is a bit strong. Chai was delicious. Staff could be a little more friendly in my opinion.
Had the special latte... great!
2026/02/05: Great!
Coffee was nice. It had a lot of space & free WiFi if u wanna study. The cashier guy that attended us looks like he hates life, 5 stars if the dude smiled more.😂
I tried their vanilla latte and it's pretty good the only complaint I have is that most coffee places use strong fruity coffee like an acidic taste which I hate because it has a weird sour taste at the end which does not compliment the coffee well in general which is why I prefer Hispanic coffee places that use non acidic fruity coffee notes. Hopefully more coffee places will use less fruity/acidic notes. But I haven't tried anything else there which is why I gave them a 4th star.
Very mid- The location is cool and very hipster as it feels like a pop-up in old bank. We ordered three drinks and once the baristas made our drinks they were too busy chatting with their friends to call out our name for the drink order causing our drinks to sit for far too long and start cooling. The coffee is the same basic under roasted taste that every hipster joint has. The cappuccino lacked depth and while not bad in anyway, it was also deeply unremarkable.
Acidic
Nice shop in a historic building. However, please don’t just fill half the cup with ice, it tastes like water :(
I ordered a matcha latte with oat milk. Very excited but the matcha was very weak and it just tasted like oat milk with a hint of matcha. Very disappointed in the drink. The atmosphere was cool since it’s in an old bank. Not too loud, perfect studying spot.
I like this place. but I ordeed a double shot of espresso and was told it was an double. barista dude that made it said shot of espresso. not cool gaslighting over coffee and paid for a double
Visited a couple times at this new location and it has been a mixed bag so far. Their espresso tonic was extremely well done - the espresso flavor was still noticeable despite the sparkling and tonic presence. The citrus was a nice touch too. My friends and I have tried their Volcano and Shaken Maple Lattes as well, but those have been a little inconsistent. One of the volcanos I had was extremely watered and just tasted like a normal iced latte only with melted ice. Another time, it tasted super unique and I understood why it was one of their most popular drinks. The Shaken Maple I just don't think I was a fan of in general. During one of my visits, I asked for a cup of water to sip on while I finished up some work there. The water and cup had a strong fish/meat smell - very similar to that smell of ice from a freezer that contains meat products. I want to love this place, so I hope they optimize their drink making to be consistent and to have cleaner utilities!
I have a love/hate relationship with Play. Key points: their iced coffees taste like milk with a hint of coffee while their hot coffees are actually quite good. There’s something wrong when an iced shaken maple latte has a huge orange peel and zest in it and is completely overpowered by said orange. When it comes to their pastries, they’re simply not worth the premium that they charge. 1 drink and 2 pastries came out to $20 total which is absurd charging 7 dollars for a mid cookie. All in all, hot drinks and atmosphere is great, everything else is not worth it (I have not tried their matcha so can’t comment on that). Also it’s a mixed bag with the baristas, some are great some are pompous
Edit in response to the owner: I tried the Wadi Jannat and Karogoto. My friend really enjoyed the Wadi Jannat last time, but was confused why it tasted so different this time. I would love to learn more about the specs and how and why you do pourovers a certain way. This is a cute place to have a quick coffee break or sit and work, with lots of seats and plenty of lights. I tried a few pourovers witha few friends and the presentation of the drinks were on point. It might be because I came in with really high expectations or the barista was having an off day, but the pourovers were not great. The tasted watered down because it was under extracted, and i could not get most of the tasting notes for them. The barista said they were poured that way (super fast) for a reason but my friend said that it was more full bodied in taste the last time she came.
Overrated
sour oat cortado, tasted like dairy milk. bland filter coffee. the decor is nice and it has a cool vibe but sadly for five dollars a cup its not worth it.
coffee beans not so great, cute vibes tho
Charging $5 dollars for a water in order to use their bathroom which is something we unfortunately can’t control is pretty ridiculous. The attitude from the barista wasn’t appreciated either. Do better.
disappointing customer service. 25% tip I gave was a waste.
Overpriced , coffee was nothing special
Really rude and disrespectful male bearded management 😒
This actually might be the most catastrophic waste of $8 I’ve ever spent
Re: owner’s reply ——————————————— Looks like the store not only needs to improve on food safety practices but also how to do PR. See photo of milk being left on the counter under room temperature without any insulation. Original comment: ——————————————— Their coffee only comes in 1 default size, it may be too big for espresso based drinks, in way that the espresso’s overly diluted. Besides that, something also tasted off with the americano I ordered that’s hard to describe. I suspect it could be that their milk has gone sour… I like to have some half and half with my coffee but they don’t offer any cream, only whole milk or oat milk. It’s very troublesome to see their gallon of milk’s just sitting on a counter in room temperature, and inside is pretty stuffy with weak AC. Unfortunately has to toss the drink away after one sip due to food safety concerns. Interior is unique, in a building that used to be a bank.
PLAY is ruining the orange circle. Parking at the Orange circle used to be free but the owners of play recently began charging customers for parking through a third party called ParkStash. I guess it’s not enough for the owners of PLAY to overcharge their customers for mediocre coffee, but they gotta gouge the public to park as well.
