Lovely ambience to this pub. Very tastefully lit and decorated without tacky fruit machines or music. I think this establishment caters more for the serious diner than for passing trade. The food was very good and if you enjoy fish then this menu is for you. I had the smoked mackerel in cheese starter and a sea bass main in an incredable rich fish sauce - very tasty. My wife had the Sardines and rosemary butter starter, the confit of duck with bubble and squeak with a lemon posset sweet. We found the prices very reasonable for the quality of food and the good service. Certainly look forward to booking again.
Just had a wonderful meal, the food is delicious. If you like fish it is amazing, so tasty, first class. Thank you Dering Arms.
Absolutely fantastic afternoon at The Dering Arms - a well overdue get together with family and dear friends of old/business associates. Food and service were exceptional, a great selection and extra grattiude goes out for accomodating at such a high level dietary requirements and being so attentive. Cannot recommend highly enough!
If you’re ever passing through, make a stop at this honestly brilliant place to eat & drink the best of the best ingredients , fresh fish, knowledgeable wine list, curation of plate, love and care of menu. A lifetime of experience goes into this place.
Another lovely evening at this charming pub. We have been a few times over the past 2 decades and have never been disappointed. The food was absolutely delicious and the wines are absolutely top notch. Thanks again to the landlord and chef
Popped in for a quick drink with my family when we were visiting the area this afternoon. Knew I'd walked into a good pub when I saw the pile of Classic & Sports Car magazines on the bar! Very well kept pint of Goacher's Dering Ale. Nice chap behind the bar and spotlessly clean loos. Will be back for one of their advertised classic car meetings and to try the food!
Stayed for a night and it was exactly what we wanted. Perfectly placed in the surrounding areas and train station. Room was comfortable and clean. Food was delicious. Service was great. Will definitely stay again and recommend to friends and family.
Just stopped here after a beautiful walk through the orchards in Pluckley and I'm so glad we found The Dering Arms. The building is beautiful, full of character with a very inviting interior. We ordered a pint of local cider along with a Côte de Gascoigne white wine and sat down at our table. We didn't book but, luckily they had a table available for us. Our food was faultless. We ordered the potted crab on toast, and the chicken livers on toast... both perfectly cooked and seasoned. We then followed with the halibut with samphire that were on the specials board and oh my goodness... we loved every bite. Prices very reasonable for the quality of food served, and portions were perfect. We look forward to returning soon, thank you so much for a wonderful evening and excellent food!
We had a birthday celebration and it was perfect The menu choice was lovely and the food outstanding. Very cosy and romantic ambience with very good service. Thanks Jim.
Absolutely fabulous we had a 5* evening exceptional food and service we were so well looked after with gentle humour, the atmosphere was brilliant. Thank you
The passion of the owner is obvious, for the wine and the food, especially the fish.
Fantastic good (we only had the light lunch / baguette) a lovely building and a proper country pub!
Valentines meal was outstanding! We would definitely recommend. Jim and staff are very courteous. We will see you all again very soon!
Anazing food and great recommendations on the wine from the landlord. I thoroughly recommend this as a go to venue..
Classic cars on every second Sunday always has a good turnout with some rarities modern and old
Always a joy to pop in to the Dering Arms, whether for lunch or a quick drink. One of the few pubs in the area that stocks non-mainstream products, the Lowenbrau is particularly delicious and perfectly cold! The landlord really knows his wines and has some really well priced gems on the list. No dogs or kids under 12 in the pub but plenty of outside space if the weather is good.
I saw and amazing car show on these grounds.
The car festival is great. It’s obviously the best pub in Pluckley.
Best Rib-Eye steak I ever had. Choose the garlic butter.
Lovely quiet location, characterful building. Excellent food and service.
First class
Don't be put off by other negative reviews. I wasn't, I read the positive ones and decided it was the place to try. The pub is a home full of character. We called before as in the area and were greeted with a positive welcome. Our meal was cooked to order, with a passion for food. Sardines were large cooked perfectly with rosemary, bread was warm and soft. Sea bass was meaty laid on samphire with a lobster and mussel bisque (clearly homemade from lobster shell stock, yum) lovely new potatoes and fresh veggies. Just about room for dessert, we had apple sultana laced with calvados on a homemade shortbread disc with ice cream. Finished off with a lovely coffee and homemade biscuit. The meal was hot and remained so while eating a good sign of being cooked fresh and not left on a hotplate. The owner is the chef and on reading information about the Dering Arms he's had the building since he was 27 and now plans to retire....it will be a great loss for the area. The landlord buys fish and seafood each week from the coast and adapts his specials board to what's in season. He has reasonable room hire for b&b. Call him first to ensure it's serving, and he's still the chef. Slight threshold step
Lovely food, fantastic waitress, good host. It was quiet maybe due to the lack of heating which is the only negative
Lovely area fantastic old building
Food is superb.
Une bonne adresse pour boire manger et dormir dans une belle ambiance.
I'm been there fine it to dear the land lord need talk nice to people after costs off coffee I'm had 1/2 a glass of of orange juice he charged me £4 and he was bit rude I'm was with a lot off people party birthday I'm hear had to pay for birthday cakes that bad with people I'm pay good money going. Ther to it was cold he didn't lit fire and I'm here some off the people was cold the land lord not say anything that not good business ther some pub in Rose and Crown and the George Eg are good pub go to then go to dearing Arm pub by the station wher you get nice lovely lady land lord that see you at home and the food cheaper
Went for the tapas and the food was great but the landlord needs to retire as I recalled he said to a local while we were there 'I don't know why I do this job, I hate people', and it showed. Along with many other complaints and groans about customers. Awkward atmosphere, rude owners who argued with my partner because he arrived at 5:45pm as google says they open at 11am but was shouted away and told they were closed and left outside until he tried again at 6:10pm, to which he was welcomed with an argument about their opening times. My advice, unless you like a cold atmosphere, don't bother.
Beautiful pub but incredibly rude landlord. We stopped off here for a quick drink on our walk, and the landlord was very cold, despite us being very friendly with him. We ordered a latte and an espresso. His response was very aggressive, he said “this isn’t Starbucks, white coffee or nothing”. It was terrible packet coffee and we paid 8 bloody quid for it! Absolute joke.
What a quaint and intriguing establishment. Upon arrival you are greeted with less embrace than those staying with her majesty's prison services. A wet and windy Saturday afternoon lead to an Arctic welcome. After shaking off the icicles cast from el patron, ordering a round of drinks felt like asking for extra ration tickets. What a miserable and unpleasant man, any semblance of hospitality long gone, demanding our child to go and stand out in the rain if they made any noise. Walking out the door was the best thing about this place. If you want a horrible experience this is the place to go!
Please I implore you, do not spend your money at this pub. The landlord is rude and insufferable, ignorant to an astounding degree and absolutely without grace or class.
Popped in after a group walk for a drink and food. Used the toilets then was asked if we were eating or drinking, replied saying we'll have a drink now whilst we wait for the rest of our group then order food. The landlord was incredibly rude. I asked for a lemonade then he stared at me saying is that all. I've never walked out of a pub, he was also rude to other members of my group, I'm glad I never spent any money
They can obviously run a business their own way. But we expected the general kindness and good behaviour. Barmen definitely haven’t been kind people, they've focused only on selling, getting money, and pushing customers away.
Review for The Derring Arms I recently visited The Derring Arms, and let’s just say it was a tale of two halves. On one hand, the pub itself is gorgeous. The location is stunning, and as soon as you step inside, the smell of mouthwatering food hits you. But then, we met the bartender. Picture this: you walk in full of hope, ready to relax and enjoy a drink, but instead, you’re met with a man who seemed like he’d rather be anywhere else. I don’t know what it was, but he like he was doing us a favor by letting us in. Long story short, we had one drink, looked at each other like, “Is this happening?” and decided to cut our losses and leave. We had plans to stay for food, but when the bartender is giving you “leave now” energy, you don’t stick around. So, while the pub itself is charming and picturesque, the service made us feel like we’d walked into the wrong movie. Wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re into that I’m not welcome here kind of vibe.
Terrible. Don’t bother.
Extremely unpleasant and rude landlord!
