At Saap, we're passionate about sharing the bold flavors and vibrant spirit of Thailand with our community. Diners rave about our authentic Thai cuisine, from expertly balanced heat levels to dishes that transport taste buds on a spiritual journey - like the unforgettable 4-5 dishes shared by one of our most enthusiastic patrons, who declared every bite "a culinary experience." Our warm and inviting atmosphere is enhanced by the enthusiasm of our servers, who genuinely delight in guiding guests through the menu. Located in the heart of Randolph, VT, we're honored to bring a taste of Thailand home.
Saap is highly praised for its authentic and flavorful Thai cuisine, with many customers claiming it's the best Thai food they've had. The passionate service and fresh ingredients are frequently mentioned. Some customers have experienced slow service and staffing issues.
Tip: Reservations are highly recommended, as walk-ins may not be accepted. Be prepared for potential delays due to limited staffing.
They definitely are well deserving of their culinary nomination. The food was great.
We LOVE Saap! The food is absolutely incredible. It takes a while to be made because it's made from scratch and we are happy to wait for it. The service is wonderful. Absolutely the best thai food I've had.
Been there over 100 times in the four years here since retirement. The Beard award is justice well served. Steve and his wife work very hard to offer us genuine food nirvana!!
I love this place, they made it easy and safe to get food during covid times. And now as we get nack to normal after being vaccinated, Saap is still king of the hill for food in Randolph. Awesome awesome food, great owners, super cool employees, and for what you get this place is a real bargain!!! P.s. Don't be a D bag and be sure to leave a good tip, even if it's takeout. We need this restaurant to survive!
My wife and I had a reservation at another restaurant that was not honored so on a whim we headed up to the Saap restaurant. On a busy night they seated us in less than five minutes, immediately brought us drinks and then quickly served us some of the most delicious food we have ever tasted-all with great courtesy and cheerful service. We'll be back on our next date night!
Delicious first time visiting celebrating my friend's birthday. The service was fantastic, prompt, and kind. My vegan pad Thai was fantastic. Will most definitely be back!
Probably the best Thai meal I've ever had, if not overall Asian. The flavor balance is incredible, any of the sauces I think I could eat on shoe leather and be happy.. I can't wait to go back again
I’ve had SAAP a handful of times now and I can say it’s one of the best restaurants in the area. The food is incredible just as long as you don’t get it to go. The atmosphere is very unique and has a inviting feeling the second you walk through the door, definitely a must stop for anyone passing through.
Variety of authentic dishes, you decide the heat level. Green mango salad was amazing and the noodles and soup were very good. Attentive service, too. "Tiger Woods" drink (lychee tea and limeade) was refreshing.
Popped in for lunch with my husband on a Saturday. Enjoyed breezes and a bubbly glass on the porch while Steve introduced us to the food. Seeing nothing on the menu I've seen before excites me and Steve's warm and enthusiastic presentation made us feel at home while exploring these radically new foods. We savored every bit and debated licking the plates clean. Delicious food, welcoming service, delightful experience. It was truly like eating at their home. Side note, sticky rice is my new favorite thing! We will be back, with more family in tow (AND likely for another date)!
Another amazing meal . Wild local mushrooms with sweet scallops and vegetables over Jasmine rice. I tried a 2/5 for heat, wow I will do 1/10 next time but I am a wimp. The flavors were wonderful.
The pad see ew was good, but the curry! The curry was AMAZING. The only thing I didn't love is that it felt like they packed in one table too many. I was basically sitting head to head with the person at the table behind me - not ideal in cold & flu season. Regardless, we're looking forward to coming back soon.
Who would’ve guessed you could find regional Thai(isaan-style cuisine) in Randolph, VT. This is not your Americanized Thai restaurant. Intricate layers of flavors that have you scraping your plate of whatever remnants of sauce is left. My only problem was I didn’t have a bigger stomach. See you soon. Thank you so much Chef!
Love this place. Super delish. Sometimes hit or miss but generally great. Service can be a little slow but this doesn't take from the special experience.
The food is great and service is good. Great outdoor seating and good variety of beers! The spicyness of each dish is customizable on an easy to understand numbered scale. Looking forward to my next meal (and trying a more spicy dish).
Absolutely amazing food, great service, atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming. Coupl'a things I'd like to perhaps shed some light on after seeing the negative reviews on here: 1. You need reservations. If you don't have a reservation, there is a solid chance you will be turned away. This is a small restaurant in a small town in a small state. In order to deliver an exceptional level of quality, they need to know how many people they'll be feeding. 2. The food is absolutely bangin. Period, full stop. If you think otherwise, you need to realign your tastebuds, but you're also in luck because there is a McDonald's you can hit before you get back on the highway. 3. While I can't dispute anyone's complaints regarding service, since I wasn't there, I would like to point out that this is small-town Vermont, dudes. Don't expect a cadre of college kids eagerly waiting to fill your water glass after each sip. A few more notes for good measure: - Chef is respectful on spice (I mean, this is a state where banana peppers are too hot for 90% of the population, so ya kinda gotta be), but seriously my father (an old white dude who feels no shame sending things back to the kitchen because they're a tad too hot) specified minimal spice to our server and I didn't hear a single complaint for the whole meal. - This restaurant is a blessing on a hill in Randolph, and as far this humble reviewer is concerned, they have every right to the level of service they see fit. Should they insist I bus my own table and pour my own water, I would still consider it a privilege to have my pious mouth shined upon by their culinary countenance. But seriously, if you're gonna gripe about the furnishings or the fact the server isn't faking a smile for you, you should probably work on being a little less grumpy.
We have seen lots of good reviews for SAAP, so decided to try it while in Randolph. We felt the dinner lived up to the great recommendations. We enjoy Thai food, and both plates were excellent. They were definitely on the spicy side, so order low spicy if you don't want it authentically hot! The servers were very friendly and helpful. We would recommend this restaurant!
James Beard award winning chef. Small restaurant with excellent food. My son and I shared spring rolls that we thought were the best ever. I had a scallop dish that was excellent. Be prepared to relax and wait for your dish to be hand made for you. Would definitely go again.
Best Thai food outside of Thailand!! We’ve been coming here for years and were blown away by Rungs cooking; Ive tried almost everything on the menu and loved it but the thick noodles and the wings are my all time faves. The hype is very much justified.
Wow! From the smells that you get when you enter to this restaurant you know that you arrived to a really good and genuine Thai restaurant. The dishes were absolutely amazing one after the other with accurate flavors and tasty spices. The chef was very nice, always checked that we are taken care and told us his story and how he opened this place together with his wife from Thailand. My only complaint is that the service was slow but even with that fact, it's still a big 5 stars and really worth it.
Oh my palette was stimulated with the beautiful presentation of the food. It was highten with the first bite. The spices were a bit much for me at level zero. I tasted a level 2 and had an explosion in my mouth that water nor beer could contain. The service was great and I loved the setting however, the spices could be taken down to maybe a minus three for those of us who are sensitive to burning heat in our food.
Delicious Thai with many choices. Friendly service. We'll be back soon!
We tried the tasting menu option for our large party of 12. It was a unique experience and somewhat like a family style dining experience as a result. We received 3 platters of each appetizer we selected for the table to share. Likewise 3 of each additional item we ordered for the table to share. The server recommend we try one of each type of entre for the best experience, such as salad, noodle dish, rice dish and special. We only partially followed this suggestion. The menu was available as a QR code for phone viewing and on a laminated menu upon request for those without devices. The online menu is the menu. This was a birthday celebration and we brought a cake with us. SAAP staff were very accommodating and provided or offered a cutting knife, serving spatula, clean cake plates, lighter and forks. We made reservations about a month before hand for 4:30 and in general most other customers didn't begin to arrive till later. Overall it was great to be able to sit down as a family and celebrate. Thanks for helping to make the event special. Regarding food, I enjoyed the distinct flavors - for example I could clearly taste the ingredients in the appetizers. Our group didn't select entrees that I would normally order at Thai restaurants so it was nice to try something different with the tasting option. Everything I tried was enjoyable with the tasting menu but not necessarily my preference. I plan to go again to try dishes that I would actually order like one of the curry dishes. On this evening most other customers were in small tables of two - 4 people/adults.
We love Saap, though it’s an hour drive and we can’t get there frequently. We always order the 5 level of spice and they deliver! 😬. But that much spice may not be to everyone’s taste, so just order something between zero and 5…. They always ask what spice level you would like.
Highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions or a nice date. The food was very flavorful, menu had a lot of options. Portions are smaller when compared to American food but definitely enough for a filling meal. Was only sad I missed out on the whole fried red snapper special. Will be back soon!
Awesome food and the waiter was really nice! Had the 24 a delicious noodle dish featuring chicken and broccoli. The spice was awesome although I admit I chickened out and went with the 1 on the 1-5 scale that they offer and I have to imagine the 5 would definitely be a challenge. I aggressively recommend the banana cake.
The best Thai food I have eaten in my life. Every dish was a culinary experience. Chef Rung is outstanding and deserves every single ounce of praise. An unforgettable meal that I will crave until my inevitable return. Those complaining about wait times are simply impatient. Great food takes time.
We went for dinner (our second visit) and it did not disappoint! We tried the Muu Dad Deaw appetizer, the Tom Yum Ghai Isan soup, and the Pad Thai with chicken. All were excellent, and we learned to do heat level 1! (Last time we did 4 - that was too much for a girl that covers her pizza in red pepper flakes!) Also, our server, Leo, was AWESOME! So personable, pleasant and attentive! Can't wait to return!!! Yummy!
Saap is one of my favorite Thai restaurants! The food is amazing, the atmosphere is cozy, and the staff is always so warm and friendly. Some people have stated it takes too long for the food to come out, but I have never felt that way. I eat dinner here often with family and we love it!
Incredible Thai food. I don't even know where to start. Just, for the love of everything, don't order your everyday Americanized Thai stuff. Ask the guy running the restaurant for a recommendation. The authentic foods you won't see in other restaurants are the reason to come here! The food is absolutely amazing, incredibly authentic, the service is great, and the story of how this place got started is just super cool. At the Thai food connoisseur I can comfortably say this might be the best Thai I've had in the US.
My partner and I regularly drive 40+ minutes to come to Saap. The food is truly authentic, fresh, and complex. The wait times are not significant, given how the food is delicately prepared to order. The owner is personable and knowledgeable. This is hands down one of our favorite restaurants in the NH/VT area.
Attended retirement party (about 20 adults) when omicron COVID-19 exponentially spreading in surrounding states. Venue well sized for this group. Ventilation felt ok (not stuffy). Staff seem d to do good job encouraging patrons to be safe. Hours before attending each guest self-tested negative. Our host said venue management easy to work with, accommodating with flexible menu choices, and pricing was reasonable. Local art on exhibit and friendly staff a plus.
Really good, authentic Thai food. Very caring staff. Charming yet unpretentious dining room. Reservations are necessary for dinner and recommended for lunch. Lots of specials as well as the classics. Some Northern Thai options which are great. Their spice level of 0-5 is pretty conservative. You might need a minimum of 2 to really feel any heat. I've been here 4 times now and each time there has only been one person working the tables and bar, so don't expect fast food. But you'd have to go to Portland ME or NYC to get Thai food of this caliber.
This has been on our list for a while since learning the chef/owner won a James Beard award. After a visit, it is very well deserved. The spice level is perfectly on par with what you order (you have an option from 1-5). The flavors are identical to what you would find in Thailand, making this authentic Thai cuisine. For such high quality food, the price is well worth it in value. We drove an hour both ways to dine-in and plan to make the trip again. Thank you!
Casual and relaxed atmosphere. Friendly owners with engrossing back stories. Delightful and well flavored entrees and appetizers. I got the number 2 on the heat scale. Plenty enough heat without searing my throat, tongue or nose to the point of losing out on the flavor blend of my Tum Yum Gai soup.
Lived up to the hype. My wife and I drove down from the Burlington area to see what the fuss is all about and boy was it a superb meal. The mango salad was truly delicious, but be warned: even the level 1 spice is spicy (thanks for the tip, Jesse)! Both of us had pretty 'normal' Thai meals (my wife: curry, me: stir fry veggies w/ chicken and a fried egg), but the quality was a notch above what you'd get at your local Thai spot. The veggies registered as very fresh and generally the meal felt as if it was made with love by someone really taking their time.
Yes the service could improve, but this is also excellent Thai food. You taste the broth and you’re like wow that’s so good. Is there better in NYC or places like that? Yes, but probably the best Thai food in the state. A few good vegan options but not too many.
Thai iced tea was PERFECT. It was not so sweet that you puckered when you took a sip, instead it was a perfect blend of flavor and sugar. The food was spectacular, I suggest getting the Chicken Wings in the basil garlic sauce. The waiter was fast and courteous. If you get Ian, know that you are in good hands. Be careful with the spice, there's no shame in going for 0 stars. 2 stars is plenty for the average adult I promise. I hope you have the pleasure of enjoying some of the best Thai food money can buy.
Just had lunch there. #19 is the best fried chicken I've ever had in my life. And the ginger sauce was also the best I've ever had. It was magical. It's an honor to be served here. I can't believe you can get food like this in Randolph. Thank you for the great memory
Excellent Thai dishes and excellent service in a comfortable dining area. Especially good was the green curry with shrimp and squid. Portions were generous. We ordered #1 spice level, which was hot. We need to return to check out level #2. A must visit if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Randolph VT!
Had an amazing meal - the moo dad deaw, khao soi, and green mango salad were wonderfully flavorful. Service was great and the food came out really fast too - although we did come on a Thursday evening in March where it might have been less busy. Wholeheartedly recommended.
23 people went toSAAP for my mother's 90th birthday and Steve the owner who trained with my father at Spaulding High school! Treated us like royalty, great food and excellent service by his wife and him! We all ate family style and my wife,my mom and I all tried every one of the dishes!! Mom unfortunately lives in Concord NH, still wants to go back every year! 15 dishes for $300 what a deal!! Not a complaint in the group, AMAZING for family of chefs and good cooks! Thanks again for a wonderful birthday party, Steve and your wife! Sa WA Dii, KA ! So for the bad Thai language and for taking so long to write about SAAP ! Rick Wheeler. I wish I didn't live in SC because I would be there at least once a week!!!!!
Best Thai food I have eaten!!! The service is amazing. Small, comfortable setting decorated from the owners homeland.
Drove 2 hours each way to dine at Saap, I was not disappointed and I will be back (soon). I don't write reviews, but the food here was extraordinary and I felt moved to do so. I lived in Thailand 30+ years ago, greatly enjoyed the cuisine then, and have searched ever since for an authentic replication of that experience. I didn't think I would find it in Central Vermont, but I have. It only took three decades! I took my wife and aunt for lunch to Saap today and every single dish that came from the kitchen was wonderful with just the right amount of complexity and subtleness that marks excellent Thai food. Brava! Not an uninteresting or Americanized version in sight! Where the restaurant is able to obtain their fresh Thai ingredients is a mystery but one I am happy to leave unsolved. Yes, we had reservations and the restaurant was quiet so the service bar was not high, but we enjoyed the interaction with the owner who was acting as our waiter. Since this was my guests first real Thai experience, we all shared the dishes and as the food was prepared, it came out in no preordained order which we were fine with. Go, you will be glad you did!
The server was one of the most passionate servers I ever saw. He was so excited to see people enjoying the food. To me, it really felt like it was the best meal I'd ever had. We got 4-5 dishes and everyone tasted everything. Every bite was like a spiritual experience haha. It's real thai cooked by a kind and passionate thai woman. Folks need to go to Randolph just for that experience. :)
Food is awesome. I lived next to Thai town in Los Angeles for many years. I have eaten a lot of Thai food (in America). When our food came at SAAP I immediately could tell it was more authentic and regionally specific than any other Thai restaurants or food I was used to. Really pleasantly surprised to find a gem like this in the middle of Vermont. Our family make la a point to go when ever we’re in Randolph. Always good. Always satisfying.
Fully enjoyed our lunch at SAAP, brought back many memories from our 3 1/2 years living in Thailand. Atmosphere reminded us of the many family Thai Restaurants found in Northern Thailand. The restaurant does have a small staff or at least when we were there. All great to chat with but it’s a relaxed environment so don’t come here for a rushed meal, come to enjoy the food. Reservations are needed for weekends and in general so they can plan accordingly. Open for lunch and dinner but does close from 2-4:30. Now for the food. It was very good- we had the spring rolls, chicken wings, Khao Soi Chicken, and Pad Kra Pao… flavors were very authentic. Considering this is in the middle of Vermont and getting authentic thai is definitely a delight.
We asked our server to recommend dishes that could be made gluten free and vegetarian, and the resulting meal was truly amazing! We got the shredded mango salad, pad see ew, and panang curry. Each dish was so bright and layered in flavor!! All the vegetables were so fresh, and the herbs even came from the chef’s garden! My favorite was certainly the mango salad, and my sister loved the curry. The pad see ew was exceptional as well, with chewy rice noodles and perfectly cooked tofu! And mango sticky rice is always a must order. Make your reservation now!
The food is phenomenal. The veggie spring rolls were very crispy and good. The Panang curry was really well seasoned with fresh vegetables which were cooked to perfection. The Pad See ew chewy noodles were well seasoned with great mouth feel. The mango sticky rice dessert was great too. The service was a bit slow. The servings a bit small. Tried to order another dish but it was going to be over 40 minutes for it to come out. I would order more than you think you want as soon as you get there.
Wow, we have been trying to get a resy here for awhile and finally it happened and we were delighted with fresh, authentic Thai cuisine- delicious salad, pork, scallop, and shrimp dishes all with fresh veggies. The sticky rice - mango - warm coconut milk was a great finale! Steve, the owner, is humble and grateful for the rave reviews and full house once again. We’ll be back soon!
We unexpectedly were able to walk in today for lunch. (Reservations are highly recommended. ) We shared a Massaman curry and Som Tum Thai salad. Both were ordered as 3 spiciness. The salad was very spicy, while the curry was perfect. The dining is casual. The service was very good. A variety of Vermont beers from Switchback, Foley Brothers and Burlington Beer Co.
Unfortunately, not worth the hype. Food was good, but nothing spectacular. Service was not good. Only one person sitting, waiting and serving a full dining room. He did the best he could, but was obviously stressed out and unhappy. Why is a restaurant with so much accolades understaffed?
I am so eager to try the food at Saap but the reservations app is incredibly clumsy. I tried to use it to sign up for tonight and it indicated that ALL slots were open. I happily chose a slot and was so excited to join friends to share a wonderful dining experience. Several hours later I received an email saying my reservation was not accepted and all slots were closed. I’ll keep trying but this is discouraging…. The 4 stars are based on my expectations of an award winning restaurant.
Excellent service! Delicious food! Having traveled to Thailand myself this is the first Thai restaurant in the area that has rang true in authenticity to real Thai cuisine. My only wish is that there was more items on the kids menu. We will be going back for date nights for sure!
The food here was very good. It’s a good place to meet in Randolph for lunch, especially if you are coming from different parts of the state. Clearly marked vegan options.
We were very stoked at the prospect of eating at a James Beard award winning place on our long road trip up to Montreal. The locale was amazing, in an old Victorian looking house. The food however was a bit disappointing (it was still notches above your local Bangkok cafe or taste of Siam). The papaya salad was a bit too salty and lacked the freshness which gives it life. The sticky rice which came with it must have been made a long time ago and had dried out. The green curry was quite good, if a bit on the salty side. The pad see yew and pad thai were also decent. We had all of them with tofu. The waiter also claimed what we ordered was not enough and made us order another dish (annoying and he was clearly wrong as we had leftovers to carry, not that that is a bad thing- it was Thai for dinner and the green curry tasted better at dinner !). We would still stop here again hoping a different curry would be even more awesome- especially if they had non-coconut milk curries with veggie options.
We tried to get reservations several times and finally dined last night. The restaurant was cold (albeit being the second coldest night this winter) and they provided a space heater next to our table. We were surrounded by plants with dirt on the floor and shedding leaves. You use your phone with a QR code for the menu. Service was very good. The appetizers were the best part of the meal. I ordered the Panang Curry, with chicken and coconut milk, as an entree. Surprisingly it was quite salty. I don't recall ever having a salty meal at any Thai restaurant anywhere. I asked for a heat index of zero and it still has a slight kick. The entry way was junky looking with some jars and odd items next to a sad looking fish tank with a goldfish. I was surprised the interior didn't appear clean or presentable. I have to say I came away somewhat disappointed, maybe because of the James Beard award. (Very high expectations). The prices are somewhat reasonable. 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, a beer and a limeade for $85, with food taken home. I wasn't blown away by the experience, it didn't hold up to our favorite Thai restaurant in Montreal, unpretentious, consistent, with amazing sauces. I would give Saap 3.5 stars.
Very good Thai cuisine. Nice variety on the menu and some really good beverage options. The restaurant was very clean and a pleasant atmosphere. The bathroom was very clean. Our waiter was polite, courteous, and attentive. A kitchen mishap had them a little behind and both our waiter and the owner of the restaurant came over to apologize which was totally unnecessary but very kind. My wife and I shared 3 dishes - a meat appetizer, noodles, and a veggie stir fry. I really liked the noodles and the vegtables which were cooked to perfection. We finished up the meal with their "banana's foster" dessert and it was AMAZING. Worth the trip for the dessert alone!
Found this little gem in Randolph after reading on Seven Days that one of the owners and head chefs earned a James Beard award. Drove 1 hr out (in rain no less) and the experience was completely worth it. The food was delicious and the service staff friendly, efficient, and attentive. We got the Muu dad deaw, pork spring rolls, peek ghai tod, pad pak with chicken and side of rice, and pad mee khorat. We also had a Thai iced tea (a classic), two beers, and a Saap spritzer. We absolutely loved everything! Ate so fast didn’t have time to take any pictures. Can’t wait to go back! EDIT: I had to remove 2 stars bc the reservation system is such a pain in the ass… When I try to call it’s hard to get through and when I used the online system recently, my reservation got confirmed, then modified to a new time (which was fine), but then the day before it got cancelled for no reason. We won’t be dining there again. It’s not worth the hassle. It is a shame too because I have told so many of my colleagues and friends about the place.
Really great food. Really really awful service. Sat down a few weeks ago, took 45 minutes to get drinks and well over an hour for the spring rolls, restaurant was less than half full and the servers were not doing much the entire time. Food was extremely good though (honestly the best thai I've had in a long time). Called several times on different days since then, and they only answered once (tonight). Person on the phone obviously lied to me, forgot what my question was halfway through answering it, and spent 30 seconds of a one minute call telling me how busy they were at tonight (monday) when I asked about availability for a reservation this weekend...
I had a very love hate experience with SAAP. My husband and I love going on culinary adventures and we were referred to SAAP by a coworker. We looked it up online and saw they had recently won the 2022 James beard award! We have never had the opportunity to eat at a james beard award winning restaurant! So we were so excited! We happily made the reservation and drove 1.5 hours to try this place. When we arrived we order drinks and an appetizer. It took about 30 minutes for the appetizer to arrive. The sausage and ginger sauce were delicious. So we were excited for the rest of our meal. However, it took them an hour and 15 minutes after that to deliver the entree. And while the entrees were well seasoned, we felt they were lacking veggies and protein, our dishes were mainly noodles which is disappointing considering the 20 dollar price tag. Not to mention, the portion sizes were very small, and we both left hungry. Mid way through our dinner, I decided that it just wasn’t enough food for me, and I decided to order an entree to go, like I said, the food was good, just small in size. I walked up to the bar to order a curry to go and the server told me it would be 2 hours for entrees to come up. I have never heard of a restaurant taking 2 hours to serve anything. I declined and went back to my seat. The server could see I was upset and came and stated “ you really should have ordered the to go when you ordered your entrees” and I said, “ yah I would’ve if I knew it would take 1-2 hours to prepare meals here”. I was also disheartened as a table of 6 was seated behind us 45 minutes into us arriving and they received there entrees right after we got ours. They must’ve ordered ahead of something. Overall, I really enjoyed the food. I felt the flavors were complex and it was cooked perfectly. However, the time it took to get food and the portions in correlation in price, I wouldn’t return here.
Since their website insists that we make a reservation, we did - well ahead of time but the earliest available. So perhaps our expectations were too high, given the wait. When we go there, perfectly in time for our reservation, they told us to sit anywhere, and then found us a "good spot", but the table was not cleaned from the previous people. We waited for about 7-10 minutes to be seated. Having said that, everyone was friendly. Our appetizers were interesting and good, but it would have been nice to have some guidance on what stuff was since we had ordered some unusual items. I asked for papaya salad without fish sauce and would have been fine with a no, but what I received definitely had something fishy in it. The kicker is that I asked for massaman curry, and received a very soupy curry with NO potatoes, just carrots and tofu chunks. I sent it back and I think they just put potatoes in my old food and gave it back to me (which is alright, but it makes me wonder about their process). And by the time it came back my dinner date had already finished their meal (which was pretty good, they said). The sauce was tasty but it did not taste anything like massaman curries I have had before (this is not a criticism, just a heads up). There were only 3 wait staff on the floor, with one being clearly new and they seemed to be stretched thin - even though the restaurant was half empty and getting emptier as we sat there. I want to emphasize that they were friendly. The vibe at the restaurant was that they were closing, this was close to 8pm and we had not been there a whole hour. Overall it was a bit of a let down after waiting a week to get a reservation and after all the hype over the last several months. Oh, and also the prices were like we were dining in Boston at some fancy place. Update: had my massaman curry the next day, and I could mostly just taste cinnamon, the flavors were not complex. And the potatoes definitely seemed to have been cooked separately and added at the end.
I have heard so many great things about Saap that I was very eager to visit. I made an online reservation 2 weeks in advance for a Friday night dinner date with my fiance. A reminder was automatically sent to my Google Calendar for 7pm. We showed up at 7pm but the waiter could not find our reservation. I was confused, and hurriedly checked my Google Calendar and showed him that it said 7pm. Then I checked my email and saw I had been given a different reservation time in the email, for 6pm. I felt terrible and I apologized for the confusion, as there clearly was a glitch in the online reservation system. The waiter looked very annoyed and informed me "You really should check more carefully next time" then reluctantly handed us a QR code (for the online menu) and told us to sit anywhere we'd like. We felt very unwelcome as we sat down, but were glad that we could still enjoy some delicious food. We ordered 3 dishes, which took quite a long time to be served, similar to many other reviewer experiences. I was delighted to see that the dishes were full of protein and fresh vegetables and were beautifully presented. However, the flavors were quite disappointing. The soup was far too sour and salty, the noodle dish was bland, and the panang curry had almost no heat (I had requested spicy level 4 out of 5). We ate our meal, but it was not what I hoped for from an award winning restaurant. As we were paying, I apologized again for the confusion with our reservation and thanked the server for accommodating us. His response was "Well you really should be sure to check next time". I can overlook the food not being perfect. I understand that everyone has an off day and I know that finding restaurant help in rural VT is a challenge right now. But the way the server treated us was unnecessary. It was an honest mistake, but he truly made us feel like we were an imposition. For that reason we have no interest in returning.
Hi, I’d like to suggest updating your website to clearly state that reservations are required. We tried to dine at your restaurant yesterday but were surprised to see a sign at the entrance indicating that reservations are required and walk-ins are not accepted. It would be helpful for future guests to have that information in advance.
Tasted fine but Balance between salty, sweet, spicy, and sour was a bit off. Both the curry and papaya salad needed some sugar to cut the saltiness of the fish sauce.
It was our first time here, and after hearing so many great things we were very excited to check it out for our date night. We arrived promptly at 6pm on time for our reservation. There appeared to be 1 server/host on, but the restaurant was mostly empty. The server was chatting with a man at the bar, the server saw us walk in and continued to chat for another 8 minutes with the man. The man he was chatting with indicated towards us, and at least acknowledged us, the server did not. It was off to an odd start. After 8 minutes the server handed us menus and told us to pick any seat, so we did. There was one other couple inside the restaurant and us. We figured out what we wanted to eat and waited for the server- who was standing behind the bar- to come back and grab our order. And we waited, And we waited, And we waited. At 620pm I told my husband let’s just leave, we were sitting at an empty table with just menus. My husband agreed that if we weren’t at least acknowledged by 630pm we’d get up and leave. At 625pm the server made it back to our table and grabbed our orders. Some time later he brought over water. Now if it had been busy I wouldn’t have cared, but the restaurant wasn’t taking take-out orders, and the other couple in the restaurant had left shortly after we were seated. It honestly felt like this server was intentionally doing everything they could to avoid us. The server jovially welcomed 2 walk-in parties as they trickled in and quickly grabbed waters for them. The server dropped off our food and never checked back in until the end when we were done eating. Honestly it just felt odd to be almost purposely ignored? when we made reservations. My husband acknowledged that an incredible stretch of time passed where we were being ignored but just chalked it up to the server being a bit weird- and he didn’t mind because it was our date night and he was happy to fritter time away with me. He pointed out we weren’t in a rush and it was ok. My husband is a good man. Other than the service I did like the food. It was on point and in my opinion very enjoyable. My husband (who works in the food industry) and was most excited to try Saap was not impressed by the food. He had ordered a chicken dish that was described as having lime and other spices- but he didn’t pick up on any of the seasonings mentioned in the menu description. He was disappointed that his fried chicken was sat in a pool of liquid which made the chicken soggy. The top half of the chicken he described as beautifully crispy but he was dissatisfied with the chicken’s soggy bottom. I did not like the service, but thought that the food was good. My husband didn’t mind the service but was not impressed by the food. Nothing was wildly terrible but we weren’t wowed. So it’s a solid middle rating from me.
This was my first time in randolph Vermont , here for a skiing trip. This was the only place that was open on a Monday night and the reviews were good so we gave it a try, that was a slight mistake. First we came into the restaurant there were 8 people or so there and most had food already, there were about 3 tables that had food that wasn't cleaned up , the bar area was littered with papers so that option to sit there was out , while not busy it took 10 minutes to get a menu , then when ordering a beer took another 10-15 minutes for it to arrive, we ordered the tod fried chicken special which just tasted off, there was lime but it tasted a bit sour not like a lime the rice was hard and seems like it wasn't freshly made, chewing on it was like chewing Taffy, I got a rice and pork meal and like the rice from the chicken it was tough and didn't seem fresh, on the side I got 4 small slices of pork that where drenched in and oily sauce that I unfortunately got on my hands, the pork was so overcooked it had the texture of beef jerky. The beer we got from a local brewery was the only highlight of the meal and the waiter was nice. Having eaten Thai food before I was a little saddened in how this meal turned out not worth the 60 dollars
The food couldn't live up to the hype, too expensive for the portion, and the service was awkward. We ordered the green mango salad people were raving about and the flavors were not right. It was sour and salty to the point that it killed the other dishes served along with it. (In Thailand, this dish is normally served with fried fish which tastes sweet to balance the salad's flavors. Trust me, I'm Thai.) The Khao Kluk Kapi tasted good but had little meat in it. The same went for the Pad Mi Korat we ordered. At the price ranging around $20 per dish, we expected something more substantial, if not, at least delicious, but the place somehow couldn't nail either of those. There were a few times that the dishes were served at the wrong tables, which can mess you up greatly if you're specific about the spiciness level. One thing I like about the place is the waiting time that provided me and my partner peace of mind and the opportunity to discuss about our next food trip, and after the meals, how we missed Thai places in Lebanon, NH.
I would travel from Rutland which is over an hour drive. I frequented this place when it first opened quite often because the food is amazing, the service was amazing, the owner was very personable and explained the traditions etc... I then moved away for a couple years and then moved back and was out and about one day and was like oh! I should check it out as I've missed the food. I was unaware/didn't think of making a reservation as I always would just walk in. So, yesterday I got there at 12:00 and realize it's basically reservation only, which is fine. I am very delighted at how busy this establishment is. I walk in with 1 other person, and it was booked BUT one party of 2 was 10 minutes late for their reservation at 12:00 so we were seated. I saw on the reservation policy if you are late, the table will be seated. So we sat there until 12:20, the gentleman who sat us was very nice to accommodate us, and I double checked and made sure it was for sure ok to be seated. The owner came in on the phone and seemed annoyed and a few minutes later the host came up to us and said we had to leave. I have NEVER been seated and then told to leave in my life. I was quite embarrassed and very disappointed because I was raving about this place. I made sure to double check and make sure it was OK we were seated because I understand how things work and didn't want to have any trouble, but was still seated, served water and then basically kicked out. I'm a Native of the area, I have told everyone about this place and am just really disappointed. The people who reserved the table we were seated at strolled in at 12:25. Needless to say, I won't be coming back, not that it matters because who cares about the people who first frequented the place? Very embarrassing and disappointing experience, what a shame.
Tried this place tonight for the first time our take out order took over 40 minutes after being told 20! Then when we got home the dishes we ordered had very little meat in them! The other thai places I have been, have better portions of meat in the dishes for the price being paid! I ordered a meat dish with added veggies, not a veggie dish with a few pieces of meat!
Service was slow. We came in with two other couples and they were served, ate, and left before we were served. We had four in our party and each dish varied on goodness. One dish was great the rest was just so-so. I would not come back.
I really want to give this place a better rating, but the service we had and the way we were treated by one server in particular was puzzling at best. a group of four of us showed up at 7 on Friday without a reservation and we were fine with waiting for a table or bar seats. The other couple we were with eats here often without a reservation. The older host/server was very annoyed that we didn't have a reservation but seated us at the bar. We were given menus but did not even receive a glass of water for 45 minutes. When we tried to get the host/servers attention to order some drinks he told us we had to wait our turn and promptly ignored us. Eventually he told us a table was ready for us and we were assigned another server. Our new server was nice and took our orders, yet the older server kept coming to our table and would ask us what we needed and once our food was out we needed some extra sauce and we asked him. He never brought us the sauce. The food was okay at best for Thai food. I would generally call it uninspired and lacking the subtle hints of flavor that make or break this type of cuisine. The older server asked us if we needed anything else and we requested the check, and 15 minutes go by and he doesn't get us a check. We flag down the younger server and he gets us the check so we can leave. It was over two hours of confusion and unfulfilling food. I'd like to rate this place better but I just can't after the exerprience.
Very sloppy management!! 1 person only in the dining room taking orders , clean tables and brings out food. . Tables are left dirty surrounding us due to under staff and food was only ok ..not impressed at all!! How did this restaurant received the James beard award??? Very disappointed with the food and service. Will not return . The fried fish we ordered was not fresh and very dry as of it was precook hours ago. The rest of the dishes were mediocre.
We looked forward to our first Saap experience and traveled over an hour for our reservation. Like many of the other reviews left, the service was not good. After asking if we could order anything to-go in addition to our lunch order, there was an explanation of why we can’t which completely made sense- what didn’t make sense was him following up with accusing us of attempting to scam the restaurant by ordering a third item for our table of two. His accusations based on assumption were incredibly off-putting. “Do you see what you’re doing here? Ive seen this before- you order more food, don’t eat it and take it to go”. He also included, “I’m on their side, not yours.” What? We’re all on Saap’s side by choosing to take our business there with enthusiasm. But the server crushed the experience and our appetite.
Before they won awards and became a “hot spot” I used to eat there all the time. Always got the same thing. Massaman Curry. It was always delicious. Tonight I got the same thing and I was extremely disappointed. Not only was it too sweet tasting but it was far soupier than it should have been. The carrots and potatoes were undercooked as was the rice. Rice shouldn’t be crunchy and neither should potatoes. To top it off the water they served was clearly tap water from the town of Randolph which is known for being especially disgusting. The only positive part of the evening was the service. I highly doubt I’ll be returning to Saap again anytime soon, if ever. Not impressed.
We were really looking forward to eating here, but the food was certainly not delicious. It was very average. However, our server was fantastic! We will likely not return.
Disappointing results. Food was good cause I was hungry, but definitely not worth the money... or the wait (close to an hour). Got a noddle dish and it had no flavor and the noodles were over cooked. My boyfriend got a soup that he said he wouldn’t get again. It was a sea food soup that was served with the shell to the muscles included. My father had eaten there two nights before hand and wasn’t impressed either, but we wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. My father and his friends order had been messed up, and the friends meal wasn’t included. My father wouldn’t recommend his dish to me when asked if he liked it. Overall not a worth while experience.
It's very hit or miss. Food tends to be excellent, but the service and attitude can be atrocious. I've lived in area since 2022. When we first would go, I had no complaints. Service was sparse, but it was post-covid and staff was tough to find. Since, it's gotten much worse. My last two experiences, I never even got food. Imperious attitude and no desire to serve. Stopped in tonight as a single aiming to sit at bar, read, and have good food. First this was OK, then it wasn't, and I was told no service at bar and no walk-ins. The restaurant was half empty at 6 and no one was at bar. The food is good to great-IF you can get it, but it's not worth the attitude. I notice lots of reviews in this vein, often with comment from owner that they will improve. I've not found this to be the case. Shame too, Randolph area needs all the good food we can get.
Like many reviews, we were excited to try this restaurant, so we made a reservation 2 weeks in advance. Sadly, the food was nothing to write home about, and the service was incredibly slow. The plus, the server was friendly and pleasant. Our small plates as well as our entrees came to the table all at once, which is not a dining experience anyone really desires. We relocated from San Francisco Bay Area, and I would place this Thai restaurant near the bottom.
Mango sticky rice was outrageously atrocious! Mango was slimy. Rice had no flavor. Coconut milk was watery. Only one server who was jot very hospitable. They also don’t tell you that you get charged for an extra shot of coconut milk. Imagine paying $3 for 50ml of discutiing coconut water added to milk??!! Khao Soi was decent.
"Very sorry but we are extremely busy and wouldn't be able to get you a table this evening without a reservation." That is how this interaction could have gone... Instead I was told, "ABSOLUTELY NOT" and laughed at while I walked out the door. All the media and popularity has clearly gone to this guy's head.
When I go to a restaurant the way I am treated is as important as the food. This restaurant’s website says walk-ins are welcome. We also tried to reach them before we arrived to no avail. No one answered our calls. We drove 25 miles only to be told we could not be seated without reservations. We showed the greeter the restaurant website notice that said walk-ins welcome and explained the problem that no one was answering their phone. He would not seat us in spite of our explanation that they should because of what they advertise on their website. The food may be good but the attitude of the man who met us after we walked in was extremely unwelcome and we will not return and will be sure the people we know who go there are informed. We should have been accommodated. Very poorly handled.
Great food! A few of the meals are slightly overpriced for the amount you get. The service is typically slow, but last night we were not offered any water refills and we weren't asked if we'd like another beer, soda, etc. About 45 minutes after getting our food we were asked if we needed anything else and we simply replied that we would like our check. I understand that you were most likely short staffed, but please make it aware to your patrons that service will be slower than usual and make sure to atleast provide water refills.
Very disappointed - not recommended. Despite reservation. stood in line for 15 minutes waiting to be seated. After finally being seated, waited in anguish for 70 minutes for entrées to arrive, despite several assurances by two highly stressed waitstaff that our dinner would arrive "very soon". The space is VERY LOUD, making conversation almost impossible. Food was mediocore at best. Meat was overcooked. Overall experience was dreadful... and expensive.
Great food but staff is sorta offputting and unpleasant. Showed up a few minutes before closing for lunch and they wouldn’t even give me something to go. Don’t post hours you can’t keep.
Traveling a bit for a meal out can often keep us home but knowing that Saap had received the James Beard award enticed us to give this restaurant in Randolph another try. We made a date with 2 other couples and were flexible when they changed our reservation the day before from 6:45 to 7:15. Mistake number 1. Fumbling around with our phones to get the drink menu seemed a waste of time when the options were very limited although the website says cocktails were available. After our drinks arrived we asked if we could put in an appetizer order while we looked at the menu. Our waitress responded that she wanted to put our whole order in at once as the kitchen was closing. What? We barely had arrived. Mistake number 2. I wish we had been able to read between the lines and chosen to leave and find another restaurant in town where we would have been made to feel welcome and deserving of a relaxed meal. Instead we were rushed at every opportunity. Plates were cleared before we were all finished, we were asked if we'd like to order dessert before our meal was finished, and then before the dessert was eaten our bill was delivered being told that they were closing. Additionally, they started cleaning the floors even before our dessert arrived where we had to inhale the strong cleaner while trying to enjoy our meal and conversation. It was beyond rude, beyond our comprehension that on a Friday night we were being pushed out as unwelcome intruders instead of valued guests. Mistake number 3. One member of our group shared our disappointment with a staff member and was told that "they had a long day and they were ready to close." We stood in the parking lot at 8:30pm dumfounded at the whole experience. Yes, the food may be good (although my husband chicken was dry), but one would think that a James Beard award includes the whole dining experience and I highly doubt that whomever was the judge wasn't sitting at their table while toxic cleaning solution wafted through the air as they ate their meal and a check handed to them before they finished their dessert let alone being brave enough to ask for tea or coffee.
Steve the owner is very pretentious. I Took lunch break there with one of my employees after working a hard morning in the heat. I Made a reservation for the next day at noon and Steve the owner came out and questioned our reservation. We then ordered their Special Soup ( which I have seen full bowls of before!) and we both received half bowls of soup! I wouldn’t have minded to much but each bowl was 27$. (54$!) I Told the waitress that we were not happy with the soup. She acknowledged that the bowls were not what is usually served. Then still proceeded to charge the full amount. The person next to us the day before had 6-7 mussel shells. We had 4 between two bowls. Clearly since the James Beard Award they are to good to have blue collar works come eat lunch there. Our money is just as green as snooty rich peoples!
They're never open during their posted hours. Tried to go 3 times in the last year and they were locked up, no sign or nothing. Don't bank on them being here at the restaurant itself. Oh, and they just won some kind of food award, so all their dishes are $24+ now. If you're looking for good Thai food, check out Capitol Pho in Montpelier. Better prices, always reliable and just as delicious.
It seems almost impossible to order food from this restaurant as a local who lives close by. The food is delicious but you never know if or when you can order. I got there right when they opened to hopefully put in a small to-go order, no one else was there, and they ended up saying they can’t do to-go orders today. I guess the only way to eat here now is to have a reservation, just overall disappointed.
Like many people in the area, I was really looking forward to trying this James Beard award-winning restaurant in a small town in central Vermont. And according to some other reviews, like many I was also disappointed. For starters, the server was sloppy, disheveled, and marginally friendly. I ordered spring rolls to start, but they came out AFTER my salad. My server didn't bring me my food and NEVER checked on me. I finished my food and my server was nowhere to be found. I finally "found" him eating his lunch with his back to the dining room. I met him at the bar to pay my bill and mentioned that the spring rolls were "different." "Everyone loves them," he said, with a total snarky tone. "There was only cabbage inside," I said, "Pretty bland." "Oh," the server said, "You must have gotten the bottom of the bowl." HE DID NOT REMOVE THE SUB-PAR SPRING ROLLS FROM MY BILL! I never do this, but I didn't leave a tip and told him why. The mango salad was fine, sort of wilted and nothing extraordinary plus there was too much dressing the poor thing was drowning.
SKIP IT OR MAKE A RESERVATION. According to the server “we’re a small operation and once we get to a certain number of people we don’t take anyone else”. No mention of this on the website. We heard it was great food so we drove 2 hours to get here. I mentioned that to the server and they were still not interested in helping us. Just got to Maliwan in Essex Junction, VT instead, it has great service and one of the best Thai restaurants I’ve ever been to. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME COMING HERE.
We booked weeks in advance and waited nearly an hour for our food to arrive at the table. During that time we didn’t receive water refills and couldn’t get the waiter’s attention. When I asked to order an additional dish to take home for my fiancé, I was told there is “no takeout,” with no explanation. This was disappointing! The food itself was bland for the price point ($30–50). Overall, the experience felt inattentive and unwelcoming. From my previous interactions with this place there seems to be a patten of unfriendly staff. I wouldn’t recommend this place and would choose other options instead ( thai kitchen in milton is fantastic!!)
I dined in at Saap once around a year ago. I remember it being decent. The place seemed a bit disorganized but the food was alright - about the quality you'd expect from an average Thai place in a major city. This year someone wanted to order here for their birthday. I called several days in advance and asked if I could make a big takeout order for 4 people on the birthday date. I was made to feel like this would be possible with no issues, just to call at 4:30 on that day when they open. Due to this re-assurance, I confidently told this person we could get food at Saap for their birthday. Fast forward to the birthday date, I called again at 3:00, just to confirm if I would be able to create the order like I was informed I could earlier. I was met with a flat "no". I was told there were dozens of reservations, and I was pretty much made to feel I was being ridiculous for even asking if I could make a takeout order on this date. Remember, this is after I was made to feel I could make an order when I called days in advance. There is no way to schedule a takeout order. I had to disappoint this person on their birthday that, in fact, we could not order here. I really don't get why I was belittled for expecting to be able to order food at a restaurant that advertises having takeout, especially since I made the effort to call in advance. I guess I don't matter as a customer? This attitude is very annoying, as the food isn't even that good. Any random Thai restaurant in a major city has equal quality, and they can actually take your order without giving you any attitude like a normal restaurant. I know I'm never going to order from here again and I'm telling my friends to stay away.
I don't know or understand the rating this place has. It is the worst attempt at Thai food I have ever seen. Total failure! Yet, somehow, they claim to have been awarded the "Beard" award. 🤣 Absolutely has to be a fraud, along with their rating on this app. Unless the area people have never been out of their bubble and know no better. Even the Thai coffee was an epic failure. Also, what Beard Award restaurant serves rice in a plastic bag? And the place is dirty, the servers are a joke. OMG, we still talk about what a traumatic experience the evening was. What a waste of our time and money.
