Addis Ababa is a lovely gem in Rochester. Options to accommodate a variety of diets, friendly owners, and a diverse array of patrons! If you’re lucky, you’ll get recommended some new Ethiopian jazz albums too!
Great food, friendly service, authentic Ethiopian cuisine. It's a simple, home run place that I highly recommend for varied choice of dinner options
The food is really delicious, fresh, and authentic! The place is clean, and the setup is amazing. The ambiance feels warm and welcoming. The customer service is excellent, l highly recommend this restaurant!
Amazing service! Really accommodating for gluten-free and vegan options. The food is absolutely delicious! Get a vegetarian platter to try a bit of everything. Wish I lived here so I could come eat here all the time!
Amazing food and service, we went for a work party and got the veggie platter. They even have a shop on the side with some of the spices they use. I grabbed some to make a hot sauce out of at home. Will definitely be back!
This is our favorite restaurant! The food is delicious- we find ourselves craving it often. It is an excellent value- especially if you’re sharing with a group. There are options for everyone. They are considerate of dietary needs and have gone the extra mile to make sure the food is gluten-free for someone with Celiacs. Just make sure to request the gluten-free injera. This is a great place to bring little ones. They welcome our children like family. Our kids are very much at home there. The people are generous and kind. We always leave feeling full, happy, and cared for.
A True Gem in Rochester! Addis Ababa Restaurant is an unforgettable experience — not just a meal. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality by the wonderful owners, Aden and her husband DJ. Their kindness and passion for sharing Ethiopian culture truly made our visit special. Every single dish we tried was absolutely delicious — rich in flavor, beautifully spiced, and authentically prepared. The traditional coffee ceremony was a highlight: aromatic, comforting, and served with such care that it felt like a cultural journey in itself. We were also captivated by the small store inside, full of traditional Ethiopian products. Each item felt like a piece of heritage, and we loved exploring the shelves. This isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a cultural experience. If you’re in Rochester, don’t miss this place. Thank you, Aden and DJ, for sharing your food and your hearts with your guests!
Great mom-and-pop institution. We arrived shortly before closing but were warmly greeted with excellent hospitality and without a rush. The platters of food were delicious, easily accommodating both vegetarian and pescatarian diets. Would highly recommend!
My boyfriend and I sat down for dinner for the first time here. We ordered the sambusa, shiro (chickpea stew), chicken firfir, and lamb firfir. They were able to accommodate my gluten allergy and served gluten free injera on the side. Food was absolutely fantastic! Service was fantastic and atmosphere was cozy. We will be back!
Really awesome find!! The food was fantastic, the kitfo was superb, Shiro wet a big hit, and the spice level was perfect (we asked for spicy and got spicy :) The vibe was super nice, chill music, the people were super friendly and welcoming, on the finer side of casual, light and airy atmosphere with cool decor. 11/10 recommend.
I went here with my dad after a friend suggested it to us. Our server was very nice and even gave us a suggestion for their special. It had beef, chicken, and lamb and came with 4 vegetarian sides. We got green beans, potato stew, lentils, and cabbage. That dish was only $30 and we had plenty of leftovers! We also ordered the Sambusa appetizer that was to die for. I highly recommend this place and will be coming again.
I'm so mad at myself for not going there much sooner. The food was so delicious. The staff was very friendly that I feel belonged. The photo I took is Addis Special. Perfect for two or three people. I'll definitely be back!! Update: the service and food are still top-notch. This actually was my third visit since my original post. My friends I bought kept saying this place had the best flavor food and the warmest welcome. You won't be disappointed.
Everything was fantastic!! We got the beef sambusas for our appetizer, and they were to die for! For dinner, we shared the gored gored, the lamb we't, lentil stew, chickpeas, potatoes, and collard greens. We ate ourselves nearly sick because it was all so good, we couldn't stop! Will definitely be back!!
First Ethiopian Food Experience - Yum! We got their platter special with chicken, lamb, beef, egg, and a few veggies. This was easily enough for 3-4 and we shared it between the two of us for lunch and dinner that day. It was a great way to get to try all the flavors and it was delicious. The chicken (Ethiopian bbq sauce) was my favorite, amazing flavor!
I've never had Ethiopian food before so this was my first introduction. It was absolutely amazing. They roast their coffee right there. Add a dash of cinnamon to it for some extra good flavor. I haven't had the $15 coffee ceremony, but I intend to. The food itself was second to none. Meat was very tender, spiced to perfection.
Excellent and extensive menu and attentive service . Also very quiet and not crowded at all An excellent place for some remarkable and hard to find cuisine . Plenty of parking also .
Disclaimer: the owner is very nice, and we’ve been going here for years. I do not want to hurt this business, but I think it is incredibly important to report this— some friends and I went here for dinner this past Saturday, -several food safety issues were present. Firstly, there was a LIVE WORM in our friends glass of water. We then looked into our glasses, and found that all of our waters had large particles floating in it. The owner apologized and brought out a fresh pitcher of water, but at that point we did not trust the safety of it. most of our food was ice cold. I suspect it is prepared in advance and sits out for hours (this was never the case until recently, always freshly cooked) this made us even more concerned. If the water had small critters in it, what would the food contain if it had been sitting out all day? It hurts me to say because I really do like this place and they have always been very kind, but I do not trust the food safety and the quality has gone down hill significantly.
