Even with food prices constantly rising, consistent good food at reasonable prices can still be found. Thank you Las Cuatro Milpas for feeding us for the past 92 years! I wish your menudo was available everyday!

This is my favorite place to eat in San Diego when I'm craving homestyle Mexican food. From the tortillas to tacos, everything is always fresh and made to order. The employees always make me feel like family. I've eaten here for at least 30 years.

Simply fantastic!! Simple high quality food and amazing prices and with kind and hard working people. What will we do without it?? It closes on December 24th.

Sadly this is the last time we will be eating here with them closing at the end of the year. Food has always been good. Nothing fancy just good home cooked traditional Mexican food at a very reasonable price. Today I decided to go with the beans, rice, tamale and fresh made tortillas ($7) and two tacos ($7). Not sure where else in San Diego you can get that kind of meal for $14. Everything was on point as usual and the ladies serving everything up to us were happy and welcoming to everyone. Farewell my friends! You will be miss for sure. 🙏🏻😢🙌🏻

The highlight of my San Diego trip wasn’t the beaches or the skyline. It was a little hole in the wall called Las Cuatro Milpas. The first time I tried to visit, the line ran down the block and the place was closing in half an hour. I came back the next morning, early, and there was still a line. Not as long, but long enough to make me wonder what kind of magic could pull people in when there were taco shops on every corner. So I asked. While we waited, the stories came fast. I learned the place was closing after more than ninety years. I realized I wasn’t in line for lunch. I was at a wake. One woman told me after she moved away, she used to drive for hours just to come back here for their food. A man said he had been coming since he was a little boy. The woman at the register was the same one he remembered from childhood. She had grown from chica to abuela. He always ordered the same thing: beans, rice, tortillas. The smell of their fresh tortillas takes him back to his childhood. In a few days it will be gone and only exist in his mind as a fading memory. He needed one last hurrah. Another woman told me her son used to play for the Milwaukee Brewers. When the team visited to play the Padres, she brought the entire baseball team here to eat. Everyone had a story. Everyone had a reason to be back one last time. They only took cash. Of course they did. The building had been sold, swept up by rising property values and the push for something newer. The original location had been just down the street, someone said, more than fifty years ago. It was all slipping away now. The couple in front of me bought boxes of food, hoping to freeze this moment in time before it vanished. I fumbled my order with my shaky Spanish, and the people around me stepped in, smiling, translating, guiding. I ended up ordering one of everything out of pure indecision. I felt a little like a vulture, a newcomer arriving at the end to pick through what remained of someone else’s memories. But no one seemed to mind. There was enough to share. Except tamales. Those were long been sold out. The tacos were great, but the man was right. The beans and tortillas were something else entirely. Simple, rich, familiar in a way I couldn’t explain. Before leaving, many of the people I met in line came back around to ask what I thought, perhaps looking for reassurance that nostalgia hadn’t clouded their judgment. It hadn’t. The place was special. I left full and a little sad. A place like this wasn’t just food. It was history, family, comfort, and most importantly, community layered into every bite. In a few days it would be gone, living on only in the minds of the people who grew up with it. The next night, at a corporate dinner with three-digit surf and turf, I caught myself wishing I was back in that line, waiting for seven dollar beans and rice. One meal was expensive. The other was irreplaceable. The line had felt like a procession, and I found myself carried along with it. A place was dying, and I was blessed to witness it. This is an obituary for a kitchen that mattered.

Every time I have been here has been absolutely Wonderful! The food, Ambiance, historical setting and service have been outstanding! When you arrive there is usually a line running out of the front entrance. 1-Get in line. 2-Order your food and ask for the food to go or for eating at the restaurant. 3-Wait at the counter for your food. 4-Pay or your food. 5- leave a tip for the hard working individuals employed at this establishment. 6- if you are eating in, it is all open seating. Find an open space which suits your needs Enjoy! Ask for the Chorizo and egg bowl (which is mixed with fresh pinto beans and red rice! So very yummy! Also order the tacos de pollo (chicken tacos). The tacos are filled with shredded chicken with a few diced potatos, shredded iceburg lettuce, crema and cotija cheese. The chicken filling is expertly seasoned by an Abuelita who knows what she is doing!! The Chorizo bowls come with a red salsa and freshly made flour tortillas. Outs no tanding! Oh..also pick up a dozen (or two) of freshly made flour tortillas to take home.

Place is exactly the same as I remember it over the last 40 years, pretty sure the menu is the same too. Amazing food , super quick service, affordable. Best place to get lunch after flying into the airport.

Great hole in the wall place with amazing home cooked Mexican food. Today I tried the tamale with beans and rice. You better be hungry 😋

I'm a San Diego native, and have never been here before. Since I know it's for sale, I wanted to go. The line is long, but it moves pretty fast. All the food is cooked to order, right in front of you. The fresh corn and flour tortillas are also made while you watch. The rice and beans mixed in a bowl is to die for. They only have a few things on the menu but all of them will blow your mind.

This place is incredibly good! We had one of the best meals in while visiting San Diego. We took home plenty of food and enjoyed it for nearly three days. Absolutely loved the tamales, hand made tortillas and rolled tacos. The beans and chorizo were delicious. Just one caution: they only take cash. Make sure you bring enough cash to cover your meal. Will 💯 return and enjoy another meal here!

Las Cuatro Milpas is an amazing Mexican restaurant, one of the best in San Diego. There are a lot of great Mexican spots in the city, but this one is definitely a must try at the top of the list. The tortillas are amazing, made with real lard. The food is always super fresh. Beans and rice with chorizo, chicken tacos, carnitas burrito—it’s all great. The salsa is also incredible. You can really taste the authenticity and the care here. Don’t let the line out the door deter you—the wait is never more than 10 minutes. Update: Came by yesterday with my godson because it’s unsure how much longer this institution will be around. 11:30am is a sweet spot here, just before the lunch rush. It was amazing as usual. The chicken tacos, the rice and beans, the salsa—everything was top-notch. That’s one of the major differentiators of Las Cuatros Milpas: they never miss. Quality has been the same daily since they opened nearly 100 years ago in 1933.

Whenever I'm in SD and time allows, I have to get the rolled tacos and fresh tortillas at Las Cuatro Milpas. Getting there before 11:30am is key before the long lunch line starts. No frills, nothing over priced or fancy dining experience, just abuela and familia pumping out delicious homemade San Diego style mexican food.

Great authentic taco dining experience in SD! A small restaurant that seems to get packed quickly so get here early! There were ~12 people ahead of me in line and the process took less than 30 min to order and get my food, so not too bad. Pricing is extremely fair (cash only). The menu is limited, but they do what they do well. The hard shell tacos were my top favorite, followed by the rolled tacos and then homemade tortillas. The rice and beans are good but could use more flavor. Food is nice and hot and fresh. Dining area is decent.

It is an end to an era..so this historic place will close at the end of the month. Simple, delicious Mexican food. I highly recommend people to come and taste freshly prepared lovingly made food. There will be a line so come enjoy a bit of history while you can.

Be prepared to wait. But it's worth it. Parking can be tough, suggest looping the block a few times. Food is made when ordered, hence why the line stays long. If not sure what to order, just work your way down the menu.

Overall this place had really delicious authentic Mexican food. Coming from a Mexican family I can say it’s pretty spot on. Reminds me a lot of Mexican food from the pueblitos. Great portions and great prices for the quality and quantity. Only thing was the chorizo con huevos could be better. The flavor was good but the ratio of rice and beans to the chorizo and huevos could be improved. It’s more like a rice and beans plate with a sprinkle of eggs and chorizo. A LOT of rice and beans which I didn’t know it came with and barely any actual eggs or chorizo. I ordered a side of rice and beans with it because I didn’t know the huevos and chorizos already came with it and the menu doesn’t state it.

Been to Las Cuatro Milpas many times over the past 40 years and to hear of it's sale and potential closing is very sad. So I flew back to SD to get perhaps one last taste of the delicious food. Pork Burrito and a side of rice and beans.

Very underwhelming. Chorizo con huevos had 0 chorizo, but a load of salty beans instead. Tamales only come with pork and lack flavor, I've had better tamales at a Mexican grocery store in Minnesota. Tacos were not bad for the price and had generous amount of meat. Can't eat inside half hour before closing. Cash only.

Took a ride down to San Diego, for what I expected to be some fantastic tacos. The service was impeccable, as the ladies working the orders counter treated you like family. However, the food itself was less than impressive. Hard shell tacos were not crispy nor hot. Beef inside was dry. Lastly, it feels like you’re dining on top of a tortilla “sweat shop”, as the ladies hustle all around you, trying to quickly bust out fresh tortillas.

Las Cuatro Milpas is a popular spot in Logan Heights that many locals rave about. The food is good and definitely has that homemade, traditional feel. It’s a no-frills place with a strong sense of local culture. While I enjoyed the meal, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. The flavors were solid, but not as exceptional as I had been led to expect. That said, the flour tortillas are a standout, fresh, soft, and definitely worth trying. Overall, it’s a good spot for a one-time visit to get a taste of local flavor and tradition, especially if you’re in the area. Just manage expectations if you’ve heard it’s the best in town.

I travel extensively and am a foodie. This was by far the most disappointing experience of Mexican cuisine. I’m sure the original owners had a 100x better food. Looking for the oldest Mexican restaurant, I came here expecting a delicious meal. They only have chicken or pork meat for tacos. What true Mexican restaurant doesn’t have lingua or al pastor? The pork was bland and tasteless. I used a lot of hot sauce and lemon to flavor it. And the rice! Felt like Asian sticky rice, again tasteless and smooshed. I’ve had much better Mexican cuisine in Seattle, San Francisco even Denver than this original, oldest restaurant near the boarder. What a waste of appetite and money. BTW, they only take cash. 🤦‍♀️. If you just want to try this place for the sake of its age, go ahead. However, if you are looking for a delicious Mexican food, I do NOT recommend this place.
