Food was delicious. Highly recommend the sweet potatoes tostones and fried chicken and the crepes florentine. The atmosphere was magical. Really kind people. Fireflies remind me of home and I miss them as california does not have any lightning bugs that I have seen. Oh Firefly, thank you for a magical memory of a lifetime.
This place is insane... like in the best ways. The head chef changes the menu all the time which keeps it interesting. I have tried everything on their menu and can honestly say its spectacular. I almost want to leave a bad review so no-one hears about our secret neighborhood gem. But alas, come one and come all!
Goddamn this place is a gem. If you’re gluten-free, Firefly will become your favourite restaurant in the city. If you’re gluten-full, I reckon it still will too :) For starters, the atmosphere here is very warm and cozy. Perfect for a fall evening. The art and eccentric ornaments/details don’t go unnoticed. I really appreciate how this doesn’t just feel like a restaurant — it’s almost like an extension of your own home (just with awe-striking gluten-free food.) Which brings me to… the gluten-free food. Fried chicken?! I mean… how?! This was my first fried chicken ever, and it did not disappoint. It also exceeded my boyfriend’s expectations (who loves the gluten) — so you know it’s good. The squash dish was exceptional — so too were the sweet potatoes. But the cherry on top of it all was the brownie with cornflakes and vanilla ice custard… I haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since. It’s a 99.9% gluten free menu, asides from 1 side of bread which can be swapped for cornbread (if I’m recalling correctly) so BASICALLY it’s HEAVEN ON EARTH
Hands down, top food I’ve had and on top of it all was gluten free. I’m GF and the fact I had options outside of changing the bun, or just a burger is first win but I had fried chicken, gravy, Mac and cheese, bread and they weren’t subs it was just their menu. Sammy was an INCREDIBLE waitress and took care of us and added to the evening. It was all so filling and for the atmosphere and food it was fairly priced. We are visiting but would 100% go back, it was delish! You must go. And she brought a blanket out for us since we sat in their outdoor seating
We really enjoy firefly. My wife is strict vegan, and they have many dishes which either are or can be made vegan. I am not vegan. We always get the seed loaf, really enjoy the rustic flavors. I enjoy the Pao de Queijo, and the onion jam that comes with it is my favorite. The Mexican street corn is mild and delightful. My wife enjoys the daikon radish cakes and usually gets them as her main, supplemented with something else since they're a starter and a little small for a main. The choppy salad is excellent even in vegan form. The spring salad is also excellent as a vegan option. I've had both the fried chicken and the braised pork; both are excellent. The only quibble is that the "damn fine buttermilk biscuit" hasn't actually been that great on two occasions - it tends to be overcooked and not so tender. The cornbread is much better although it too tends to be overcooked. The Mac and cheese is fine but not spectacular. For dessert, the chocolate peanut butter bar is excellent, but get the vanilla ice cream rather than the coffee cocoa nib vegan ice cream if you can. The dulce de leche pot de creme is excellent but very rich. And the key lime pie is also excellent, not too tart or too sweet - just right, but smaller than I would like.
Five star, creative DELICIOUS food. Easy Street parking. Friendly, professional, knowledgeable staff. Nice restroom. Casual yet festive ambience. Fun place for celebrations or dates. They do NOT do take out. The focus is on the people who are present to them. And in turn, they are present to the people enjoying the warm, hospitable welcome. Pricey but SO worth it.
I went here with my coworkers for dinner and had a great time! The staff was very welcoming and a lot of fun! They accommodated all of our food allergies (and we had a TON) without any issue. The food itself was very good too! The options were not my typical choice of food, but I'm very glad I tried new things! The soda they have is delicious (my favorite beverage of the trip!) And there house specialty, chicken, was outstanding. I had the trout and it was phenomenal! They said it was the last night they were making it that particular way, which was sad because it knocked my socks off! All in all, it was a great evening with great food and people! Last thought: the seed loaf was interesting! Worth a try if you are curious!
This has been one of my stable/consistent neighborhood favorites for about 15 years! They have been around for about 30 years now. The entire menu is gluten free for those who need it. And menu items rotate on-off for seasonal variance with a core set of items always staying! They even do Jewish high holiday specific menues! Overall, the service is super friendly, quirky, and super accommodating. The food has always been outstanding. From the core items, two things I ALWAYS get are the Daikon radish cake (yeah, that doesn’t sound good but my god, it’s amazing, trust me) - the broth, mushrooms and scallions all blend to make such the perfect bite. The other thing I get is the fried chicken. Yep, you heard me correctly. It’s fantastic, as is the biscuit with honey and the mashed potatoes. I will warn you, it comes with a small side of hot sauce that is tasty but hits like you ate the center of the sun. lol!!! You have been warned. Bar is beer and wine only. They do allow corkage but don’t be a jerk and bring something they have on the menu and make sure it’s an elevated bottle (and off a tasting to the server or bar team if it is a special bottle) - I hate when people bring a cheap bottle to avoid buying from the restaurant. Anyway, this place is always worth a stop and has never let me down in 15 years. Good food, not Michelin quality but flavors that will make you happy, and an environment that feels comfortable, homey/warm. (Plus, they have a nice outside parklet on the two days it’s nice in SF) 🤣
This place was so good. The atmosphere was very chic and cool without trying too hard. The service was great. Almost everything on the menu was gf execute one thing (a biscuit) so that was amazing. And what’s even better? It was actually all AMAZING! We started with the cheesy buns with arugula-walnut pesto and onion jam. I am obsessed with them and wish i could go back for more. Then my husband ordered the fried heritage chicken with mashed potatoes & gravy, horseradish slaw and buttermilk biscuit and he said it was delicious. I also tried his dish and thought it was very good and flavorful! I had the baked Mac n cheese with cheddar, Gruyère, and Parmesan bread crumbs. YOU GUYS I thought they messed my order up. It looked too good to be true and tasted even better. I flagged down the waitress and double checked it was gf, and it was. I dream about it to this day. We tried the olive oil cake with candied kumquats and it was delicious! They actually gave us another dessert on the house and it was a wonderful pumpkin, sour cream I can’t even describe it. I believe it was seasonal but for sure ask about it! If you’re reading this and you’re the waitress who accidentally almost took my husbands plate away before he was done - seriously stop feeling bad we thought it was hilarious and you were all so nice! 😂
What a great dining experience. Friends had heard about this restaurant but not yet visited — and gosh, are we happy they let us join them! The menu is mostly gluten free — and where it is not, alternatives were available. The flavors were well paired — the artichoke and green olive salad is a great way to start a meal. The wine list offers a great variety at most price points. From a truly gluten free perspective, the max and cheese was good — would have like a little more flavor, but that’s probably personal preference. The friend chicken was next level — perfect mix of crispy and moist — and not too greasy. The brownie sundae featured salted caramel drizzle and crispy corn flakes — it was great way to end the meal. All in all, this was a delicious meal and we highly recommend the visit.
Ventured into a new neighborhood that I haven't been too lately...Noe Valley! Made a reservation for a date out with the wife. We were fortunate to get a reservation about the time that they opened. The service was great. The food was well portioned and reasonable. The menu items were unique and delicious. The only draw back is that they don't have typical soft drinks like Coke, etc. I guess the menu was unique enough that I should've expected that. All good. Will be back in the future!
such a cute place wit a good amount of vegan options! started off with the garlic butter parm brussel sprouts and the sweet potato! both were sooo yum (even better when combined lol). for the mains, I got the eggplant thing which was … interesting. the eggplant itself was crispy and crunchy but the soup/wtew it was on was … not my fav lol. interesting flavors kinda reminded me of goulash! wish it was a little more seasoned and hot, but overall pretty good experience and i would go again! also the sweetest and friendliest server helped us and 10/10 for service and ambiance!
Came with a group of 5. You can feel that farm to table concept with the long tables, cozy decor plus great vibe for meeting with friends. The menu had good vegetarian options. There were a few meat/fish options as well but nothing gravitating me to that direction. The vegetarian options looked more appealing. Griddled daikon radish cakes with mushroom and scallion stir-fry... loved it! Loved the texture ! Sweet potato-poblano kugel with black bean chili, crispy shrooms, chayote, pepita-cilantro salsa and cashew crema... it was good, flavorful... the mushrooms elevated it. I'm a carnivore but would definitely come back to try some of the other vegetarian options. Good service, excellent vegetarian options make this a pretty solid option when trying to accommodate food preferences.
Came here last Friday with outdoor seating reservation. Servers were friendly. We are both vegan, ordered 3 apertizers and 2 entrees. Love the tostones and daikon cakes. Will skip the entrees next time. Gumbo was definitely better than the Enchiladas. Our server, Samie was checking on us and when she noticed we were not into the entree especially the Enchiladas, she comped that entree. What a surprise, appreciate her gesture (we gave a 30% tip pre-discount subtotal)! We will return for sure, but just for the Vegan apertizers.
This is a painful review to write because I wanted to love this place. The atmosphere is homey and welcoming, the staff was fantastic, and some of the food was delicious: every starter was amazing, and the sweet potatoes were a knockout. But then there were the misses. The fried chicken main arrived cold and greasy, and the brownie sundae was burnt to a crisp... Literally a crisp, as it was almost impossible to even cut it. The biscuits were also overbaked to the point of being painfully dry. And while the starters were good, it's mostly variations on carbs, with limited vegetable or other options. If the food was more evenly prepared and they added a little variety to the small plate options, this place would be amazing. Note their license is beer & wine only, no hard liquor.
enjoyed the fresh food, and thought everything was as expected. glad i tried but a little unmemorable. loved how attentive they were to allergies/dietary restrictions. kale and raddicio salad: as expected, solid. fresh. rockfish, shrimp and scallops: good seafood portion. ok curry. sweet potato poblano kugel: first time trying kugel, decent with good texture variation.
I wanted to like this place. I really did. The starter beet salad was very good. As was the bread and yummy dip. Service is incredible... Very friendly and attentive. But the main courses were underwhelming. The potato dish was wildly under seasoned. I don't think there was any salt on kugel or in the sauce. The mushrooms were also under seasoned. The enchiladas were better but again, not seasoned well. The toffee date cake was tasty but a bit dry. I know it's possible to make vegan food better than this. Maybe an off night. And maybe the meat dishes are better.
AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! OWNER MISTREATS THE CUSTOMERS WITHOUT APPOLOGY. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was just too frustrating to ignore. The woman who says she’s the owner (and I really hope she isn’t) was unbelievably rude and dismissive toward customers. No respect, no apology — not even for the long delay. What makes it worse is how she responds to reviews online — instead of taking responsibility, she doubles down with defensive comments like a teenager trying to justify bad behavior. It’s honestly disappointing, especially for people visiting San Francisco who were excited to try this spot and made time for it despite the weather. Here’s what happened: we made a reservation well in advance and even called ahead to ask if we could come a little early. They told us to come in, but when we arrived, we were rudely told off for showing up early. We decided to wait outside until our actual reservation time — no big deal — but even then, our table wasn’t ready for another 25 minutes. Still no apology, just gossip from the staff about “difficult customers.” After waiting over an hour and a half in total, we decided to leave. The food might be good, but no meal is worth being treated that poorly. A little kindness and professionalism go a long way — sadly, neither was found here. There are other good places in San Francisco which still maintain their dignity, support them instead.
