The most beautiful experience. Highly recommend. Staff were attentive, food was made from scratch on premise. Gorgeous?
A definite 5 star restaurant in Oaxaca. We have been to many fine dining restaurants over the world and this is one of them. The service right from when we entered the premise was impeccable. The food was delicious, always the right temperature and plentiful. I truly believe you will not have a better dining experience in Oaxaca.
This was a wonderful experience. The chef had a well thought out menu, and each course built up to the next. Every ingredient was organic and fresh. The creativity of each ingredient on how to prepare and pair with other ingredients set this meal to the highest level. The atmosphere was relaxing with a very peaceful. Tables are set in a beautiful garden, and the lighting and music gave it a very chill vibe. Service was tentative, kind, and informative. At the end of the meal, the server comes out with a tray with most of the ingredients and explains how each one was used. That was informative and helpful to see what each ingredient looked like. My compliments to the chef for putting together a wonderful experience and sharing his ideas and creativity in a very unique way. I highly recommend Alfonsina.
Alfonsina was, without a doubt, one of the best dining experiences I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Not only was the food carefully and beautifully prepared with an array of local flavors and high quality ingredients, but every aspect of the presentation, ambiance, and sensory experience was fully considered and beautifully executed. The courtyard for dining is more expansive than I expected from the outside, but kept very intimate with small trees and soft candlelight. Rosemary and sage incense between courses kept all bugs away and left the most wonderful aromas hanging near the table. The staff was very attentive, knowledgeable, and warm throughout the dinner. After the beautiful 5-course meal was done, a plate of the ingredients was brought around to explain how each dish was crafted and where the ingredients were from. I can't say enough good things about Alfonsina and our experience there. It's difficult to accomplish what they've done without being contrived, but they've managed just that. Do NOT miss a meal at Alfonsina when you are in Oaxaca.
This was our second visit to Alfonsina, the first being 5 years ago. It's been very interesting to see the evolution of the restaurant during that time, the team has reinvested a lot to elevate the setting. It's obvious the chef has a vision of what he wants the restaurant to be, a set of ideals it seems. This is not a restaurant catering to international star chasing clientele, as evidenced by their very interesting approach to restrooms. They seem to be very concerned with sustainability and environmental impact, to the point of giving their diners instructions on how to use the facilities. It would not surprise me to know that chef Jorge and his mother Elvia insist on using only local ingredients. Oaxaca is not a place of black truffles or wagyu beef. The traditional foods revolve around corn, beans, chilies, fruits, and vegetables. And that is what you will find at Alfonsina, executed at a very high level. I'll be honest that we enjoyed our meal from 5 years ago more. But I have a ton of respect for chef Jorge and what he's working towards. Not everyone will "get it", as you can see by these reviews. I know a lot of people who abide by a mostly vegetarian diet with some fish, for them Alfonsina would be their favorite restaurant in the world. Me? I'm a carnivore. I would love to see one or two supplement options and what Jorge and Elvia could do with meat. If there are no purveyors that could raise beef or pork to his standards, I'm sure he could demand it. I find the 5 courses priced totally fair, I would want to see an optional 6 or 7 course menu priced higher that includes meat dishes. The food itself is not fiery or explosive. It is nuanced and subtle in a way that you won't find in many Oaxacan restaurants, if any. I thought the rolled taco was delicious, instead of truffles and wagyu you are treated to top level produce, like the sweetest tomatillos on earth, highlighted through technique. I don't think there was a single drop of animal fat in the entire meal. The dessert consists entirely of fruits and nuts, no cream or eggs to be found anywhere, which I thought was brilliant. I've never had dragonfruit even close to the level here. I will say that I did not consider the snapper to be a great fish. It was certainly fresh and cooked well but this is one instance where I wonder if they could relax their locavore standards and find a better fish in Mexico, something with a higher fat or gelatin content. The food at Alfonsina is nuanced in a way similar to wine; the reason people pay $400 for a Raveneau Chablis. The food is quieter and more contemplative. You can leave the meal feeling light and alert, which is a nice change of pace given that so much of Oaxacan food is a total gut bomb. This is the type of restaurant I'd visit regularly if I lived in the area and wanted something lighter. If you want bold, assertive Oaxacan food that includes meat, executed at a high level, you might be happier at Levadura de Olla. For my taste I preferred that meal over Alfonsina (it was our favorite meal of the trip actually). But I have immense respect for what they're doing here, hence the 5 stars, and I know it's only a matter of taste, and for many people and how they like to eat these days Alfonsina would be their preferred choice.
We had a magical meal at Alfonsina! We were celebrating my wife’s birthday with our families and I cannot imagine a better way to do it! The location, food, and service were incredible! Cannot recommend it enough!
This is top class dinning at an international standard. Traditional Mexican ingredients handled with an incredibly refined touch. Our friends mentioned this was one of the best restaurants in Mexico and we are so glad we made the effort to go. The atmosphere was incredible. Perfectly styled. The property is owned by the family and you get this warm feeling as you walk through the gates. (PPS. If you don’t like eating diary this place is ace.)
We loved our dinner here. The food was excellent, ingredients were of very high quality, impeccable service, and eating in the garden of the villa is just a very intimate and relaxing experience.
Food was excellent, flavors incredible, and creative. Portions were too big to finish everything for all 5 courses. I took a taxi from downtown (200 pesos) and they helped call me a taxi back (300 pesos). They have a curated pottery and textile store. It was an amazing experience. I hope to bring my family here.
Our favorite place to eat while in Oaxaca. It's a quick 30 minute taxi ride to the restaurant and you are immediately greeted with the beautiful location and an amazing evening of creative and delicious food. Everything has been though through, from the lighting, the decor, the water conserving bathrooms and especially the food and it's presentation.
This place was amazing would highly highly recommend it. Very cool story, experience, and restaurants goals are great. Also the mezcal and natural wines were great! Make sure you plan ahead for a car. No signal and no wifi. They did call a taxi which was more expensive than the Didi we used to get there by $100 pesos.
We had a wonderful 5 course dinner that was made vegan, alongside a nice bottle of sparkling natural white wine made in Oaxaca. Really enjoyed the waiters explaining each dish and the full run through ingredients post dinner to fully understand how the restaurant runs using locally sourced ingredients. Also enjoyed the brief demonstration by the head chef on how they get their natural and non refined sugar from crushing the sugar cane. Very memorable evening and would recommend this to anyone visiting Oaxaca.
This was an absolutely incredible meal, and one of our highlights of Mexico! Such a beautifully designed menu emphasising fresh, local produce with a beautiful and personal service. We loved and couldn’t recommend more highly! The restaurant were happy to help assisting with calling a taxi, though we found it easy to message our driver to come pick us up!

Alfonsina is probably the best restaurant in Oaxaca. Nobody should care that it is a bit of a wild, 30 minute ride to get there. The experience is peaceful, sublime, elegant. The fixed menu is casual and a great experience of various classics, including what might be the best tamale ever! Not making the trip to Alfonsina is a mistake to be avoided. Muchimismas gracias. Los felicitamos!!!
Great experience. The restaurant is half an hour from the center. Beautiful set up very well done. The food is very delicious not sure if the fish was the right protein for a great Mole. the service is professional and they do speak English. The only down side is that you travel for half an hour each side . As it’s 5 dishes you are out in an hour. The tables are far away from each others that do not help for the atmosphere.
An unforgettable experience. The food at Alfonsina is rooted in Oaxacan tradition but elevated in such a thoughtful, creative way. Every dish felt personal and full of soul. The setting is warm and intimate, and the service was kind and attentive. Truly one of the best meals I’ve had in Oaxaca.
After hearing so much about Alfonsina, we decided to make the trip out for lunch and try their tasting menu—and we’re so glad we did. Every dish was incredibly fresh, beautifully plated, and full of flavor. The service was prompt and warm, with thoughtful descriptions that added so much to the experience. The setting is stunning—the home and garden create a peaceful, intimate atmosphere that feels like a true escape. It’s about 30–35 minutes from Oaxaca Centro, near the airport, but absolutely worth the journey. The mole was life. Truly unforgettable. This experience ranks high on our list of Oaxaca favorites. We left feeling inspired and grateful.
Going to Alfonsina was an experience, and one that I really enjoyed. All the courses were delicious, the team were all really friendly and helpful, and it was a beautifully relaxing experience. I really loved how the dishes were explained, suggestions were made for mezcal to accompany the main course, and then having a the ingredients brought to the table to go through how each of the dishes was constructed.
Alfonsina offers a truly special dining experience with its chic outdoor setting and warm, passionate staff. The pre-fixe menu is thoughtfully crafted—it feels refined without being needlessly over-the-top. The flavors are subtle and balanced, letting the ingredients shine without overwhelming the palate. What really stood out was the staff’s patience and enthusiasm. They were more than happy to explain every dish, which made the meal feel both educational and fun. You could tell they genuinely care about the food they serve and the experience they create. If you’re looking for a meal that’s as much about learning as it is about enjoying great food, Alfonsina is your restaurant.
We came here for a fancy dinner and boy did they deliver. Every course was delicious. We are vegan and though most of their menu is made from vegetables they made our menu entirely vegan which didn’t seem to be a problem at all. The service here is outstanding, we were looked after from the moment we stepped into the courtyard. We were served five courses and natural wine. It was an interesting experience throughout. This place has a focus on eco dining and reducing waste. The highlight was after dinner we were told how each course was made and shown the ingredients and we even got to step into the kitchen, meet the head chef and she showed us how to extract the juice from sugar cane which they use instead of refined sugar and we were all given a shot of it. It’s a beautiful courtyard, a little out of the way but we had a car and they offer taxis to their guests at the end of the night. The food was stunning and the staff were wonderful and so kind. So happy to have had this experience :)
Fine dining experience for an amazing price!!! Considering the quality of the food, the impeccable service, delicious wine, and incredible ambience this meal was the best meal I had in Oaxaca and recommend for all looking for a Michelin star type meal from one of the greatest cuisines in the world. We went in the evening and we learned the afternoon is more traditional Oaxacan food while the evening is more experimental (fish and vegetables). Go to Alfonsina for an incredible experience
An unforgettable sensory experience of a dinner! Could not recommend this place enough. Every single thing we ate here was out of this world. The decor of the space and so beautifully curated. The staff is incredible and super accommodating. It’s a little far from the centro but they staff will help call you a cab to get back! Would go back time and time again to experience.
Top of the line international fine dining experience, with traditional Oaxacan foods cooked simply and impeccably. The entire experience is like a dance, a performance that reaches all of your senses. Everything flowed so beautifully. Every dish was incredibly flavorful and unique, and you are surrounded by the open kitchen and comal and flavors of cooking spices and smoke and can see the food being prepared all around you. The atmosphere is incredibly beautiful and romantic. The service was amazing and at the end they explain to you every ingredient that was used in the days meal, which are all purchased that morning locally at the market. Thanks to the Chef and all employees for sharing this art with the world. It was an unforgettable experience! I highly recommend.
Went for dinner service with my wife. We had an ok experience here and found the food to be great quality and the staff provided top service. The issue was the small portion of food served didn’t align with the price. All five dishes were quite small. The final dish was a tasty almendrado mole with a tiny piece of fish. On top of that, they only served us two tortillas to eat it, one per person! It was quite disappointing to leave hungry.
Interesting and tasty experience. However, I was surprised that the $700 5 course meal did not include water refills. They willingly refill your glasses but then charge you for the extra water. Also, they mislead us about the coffee and tea. They ask us which one we wanted before desert and then charged extra for it. After getting the coffee I ask for milk and they unfortunately don't give milk with coffee. So I paid for black coffee but I am not a fan without milk. Anyway, besides the nickel and diming.. it was good. Even though I do wish the main course came with a little bigger serving of fish..
We went in Summer 2025, the menu consisted of 5 courses. Mostly vegetarian dishes, with the 4th one being a fish based dish. The food was good, nothing special nor memorable. They pay special attention to organic and local sourced ingredients. Service is very attentive. Be mindful that the place is very far away from Oaxaca city (around 30 minutes with taxi, 300 MXN). Was ok in general, would not come back
A unique and special dining experience in Oaxaca that showcases the local flavors with an elevated twist. If you want to experience what dining with a local would be like, this is a beautiful opportunity that takes place in an hacienda outside of the city. The food can be a bit underwhelming, but the experience and setting makes up for it.
We recently dined at Alfonsina, a restaurant located 30 minutes from downtown Oaxaca. Despite its sketchy location, the place is nicely decorated. However, seating in the open area was full of mosquitos, making it uncomfortable despite the provided mosquito repellent and burning copal. The service was excellent, provided by several attentive ladies who acted as both waitresses and guides. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. The first dish, fish wrapped in a cabbage leaf with sesame seeds on a tortilla, was too hot and difficult to eat due to the toughness of the cabbage. It burned the roof of my mouth leaving it sore the next day. The second dish, an eggplant tamal with yucca, was interesting but not great. The third dish, a white bean creamy soup with mushrooms, was the highlight of the meal. The fourth dish, a small piece of fish on top of mole almendrado, did not compare to the mole served at Mercado 20 de Noviembre. The dessert, mamey puree with small plums and grapiñado peanuts, was fine. Overall, I found Alfonsina to be pretentious and overpriced. I believe I would have had a better experience elsewhere. Additionally, the chef did not come out to greet patrons, which would have shown pride in his food.
The food and staff was delightful and the ambiance awesome but way over priced for what you get. 8 people, with tip, taxi and drinks over $1000 usd. The drinks they serve are two sips. We felt very rushed to move on to each course and each dish was so similar, same mole, same spice that we did not really see a showcase or the culture or food. There are so many wonderful places to eat for that kind of money.
The idea of a chef out-of-the-city meal sounds good, and their primary focus is on the food, which is interesting and served at very hoy temperatures by a knowledgeable waiter. The location is untidy, kind of under construction, with packs of flying insects around and a random music selection that doesn't add up to the ambiance. I wouldn't go back, but would probably recommend it as a one-time experience
I was recommended this place by Mexicans. While I do see the appeal I don't think it's worth the 600mxn peso taxi return and I didn't feel the offering was worth the price. Dinner consisted of 1150mxn set menu of 5 courses, only one of which contained protein. The soup we had made from green bean and mushroom was very tasty and well executed, showcasing the local vegetables. The tortilla filled with bean and broccoli was quite bland and not that interesting. A banana leaf wrapped tamale was flavourful and interesting. The protein course was shredded chicken in a brown mole with tortillas. Mole was good, semisweet, tasting of raisins and peanuts but wasn't the best I've had in Oaxaca. It was good in its own right. The chicken wasn't overly exciting. Somewhat dry, with a spice mix. Desert was made from fresh apricot. Quite tasty but again very small. All in all I think we expected more food for the money and I think an extra protein course is required. No extras were offered to us to ensure we were actually satisfied. Had I been quite hungry on arrival I would have left half full. Most courses were relatively tasty, but nothing amazing and considering the long journey and the additional taxi fares required I wouldn't go back. No written menus, no written wine list and a fairly basic level of English from the wait staff made communication and wine choice very difficult. Given that 50% of the customers are English speaking some attention to this detail would be worthwhile. Purchasing a 1500mxn wine based on guesswork isn't ideal. There are no real offerings by the glass. Lastly there was a bottle of essential oil based mosquito repellent on the table, which didn't really do much. I am quite itchy writing this.
Ugh. This place has SO much potential. It is a unique dining experience. Location wise, it is in the suburbs of Oaxaca, which looked sketchy at times. The dining experience is outside in the courtyard of the complex. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Onto the food… disappointed. I’m not sure if it’s due to the menu change, but friends of ours mentioned they had the best food here. We were not blown away or satisfied at all. The burrito was giving very much a burrito lunch from the lunch lady in middle school. The mole was very delicious, but a part from that it truly isn’t a memorable experience or something I would recommend to friends/family, especially considering its about a 30 minute drive outside of the town center. This place has HUGE potential. A simple revamp of the menu/dishes provided will be the simple fix.
I was slightly disappointed by my experience at Alfonsina. Maybe I arrived with expectations that were too high, as the food was good in the end, but overall it felt simple. The fish with mole sauce was underwhelming, something I felt I could find almost anywhere. The tacos, served rolled in a paper napkin, also looked quite basic and tasted fairly average. Considering it’s a 40-minute drive (around 400 pesos) from the center, I had hoped to be transported somewhere special — but unfortunately, there were no sparkles for me.
So disappointed… For this price I expected a true experience but it wasn’t at all. The space is beautiful, the open kitchens also. But the menu was too simple, 2 out of 5 services were almost not good (the eggplant tamale and the bland dessert). The chickpea soup was the highlight but when you pay more than 70€ you expect a bit more than a chickpea soup with grilled mushrooms as a highlight.. We had a tiny piece of fish as main with a good but traditional mole and 3 pieces of kale on top. A shame. I would have preferred going eating a simple yet humble mole at a street market for a fraction of this addition. I hope Alfonsina has his reputation for a reason, but tonight it was clearly not at its level.
We were so excited for this meal and saved up to take my parents for Christmas dinner. The atmosphere and service were lovely but after cab, wine and food we paid almost £550 for four people and didn’t really feel wowed (or full) from the food. We were served veg and fish dishes with a total of 150g of fish each + ran out of tortillas. I didn’t see the vision of the chef—the dishes didn’t seem to progress nor did the dessert (a sort of mix btw a very subtle/low-sugar fruit compote and the a really sweet ponce and pan). I would suggest spending this kind of money elsewhere—I almost felt they were making fun of us tourists spending money on very minimal food just because it came highly rated.
A truly disappointing experience. We had heard so much about this restaurant and were genuinely excited to visit, but sadly, every single course fell flat. The dishes lacked flavour, and for the price of the tasting menu, the portions of fish were minimal. The dessert — essentially mashed plantain topped with slices of peach — felt uninspired and required no real culinary skill. The mole was merely average; having enjoyed far better (and far cheaper) versions elsewhere, it left me unimpressed. The soup was under-seasoned and bland. Overall, this was a waste of money and I can’t believe this is in the Michelin guide. I left hungry and with significantly less in my bank account
Quite deceiving experience. Though one can tell the big effort behind this sustainable offer, food is below average. The five course meal included a pulled pork mole which was still hard; unforgivable for a pork cut. The house and garden are pretty and the service good but not worth the ride considering it takes over 45 minutes from the city center. Finally, not a single offer of food for kids. I encourage the chef / owner to reconsider that.
I enjoyed my evening lot- an unexpected location, nice atmosphere and good service. Unfortunately, overnight I developed severe stomach cramps, nausea and symptoms of food poisoning. The other two people I dined with also had similar symptoms, despite us eating different food during the day and I had only eaten yogurt/granola all day beforehand. I contacted Alfonsina to tell them we all got sick and they denied that it was their responsibility/food and said the ‘indigestion’ was probably due to contaminated water I’d had. This is really disappointing for a Michelin recommended location where the food costs over 1000 pesos per person.
Don't waste your time or money. The restaurant charges a prix fixe price equivalent to some of the most high end restaurants I've eaten in around the world. Unfortunately it did not stand up to standards set by other establishments. We sat for more than 15 minutes before someone showed up to pour water. I appreciate that they were wanting to offer local wines, but the local wines were awful. The only wine included in the price was the red. If you wanted a different wine you needed to buy the whole bottle. Really? The red was mediocre. The white, bought by some at the table was an albarino, Chardonnay, Muscat blend. Bizarre and not great. The food was mediocre in presentation and the soup and the main's mole was way too salty. Quantity for quality and price was subpar. The service was not great. Overall, I can't recommend this restaurant, with so many other amazing restaurants in Oaxaca. I find it interesting that all of the people giving high marks to this restaurant are local "guides".....
So they deleted my comment. Here it is again. It’s unacceptable seeing staff cleaning windows with brooms inside the kitchen where they were cooking!!! They never changed the eating irons after every dish, HORRIBLE. The soup had big chunks of whatever lettuce was, hard to cut. It also had long pieces of onion, whatever, bad choice for a soup. The mole with Tuna fish? Bad combination. Zero presentation either. I don’t recommend it at all. Pricey for what they serve.
Sorry not sorry
If you value your time and money avoid this place altogether: •The place is way too far from downtown and one must get a 30 min taxi driving thru the deep oaxaca suburbs. •When you ask about the place, they sell themselves as one high-end gastronomic experience… but it is light years from it. • Food is literally bland, portions so small you take 2 minutes to eat them up. One single glass of flavored water, only two tortillas PER table PER MEAL (menu is roughly 40€ per person). The first dish, the soup, max 100 ml of tasteless soup, second dish, one taco ( the only thing worth from this place, albeit not exceptional… i give it a solid 5 out of 10). Third dish, a tasteless tamal, son bland i gave it to my partner who was starving by now. Fourth dish, a bit of rice ( i think 15 grams of cooked rice, really) and some chicken ( little) with mole. The mole was good… but not jaw-dropping.. just as average as the mole in oaxaca. And then… the dessert… a coconut ice cream with some frozen fruit… I ate it in 3 min so small it was. And the cherry on the top… •there are no prices displayed… and they come up saying: donyou want a barbacoa taco extra price… Well… I dont even know the price! Plus, suggesting off-menu food in a so-called fancy restaurant… seems tacky and to be honest… scammy …. I’ve been to many Michelin restaurants around the world and in Paris and this is the only time I decided I needed to speak up to raise awareness. Run from this place… too bad for people in Oaxaca to get this bad advertising… but this Alfonsina guys went too far… it’s pure tourist scam. Oh! and second cherry on the top… theres no cellphone coverage and they decided not to give the wifi password… so I was so mad I didnt take pics .. but my partner have and he posted another review with the pics.
Unfortunately I believe this place is a complete tourist trap. Genuinely the most disappointing meal we had during our 3 week Mexico trip and the most expensive to add. The 5 courses had very little flavour and seasoning. Only a small bit of fish throughout the tasting menu, which for the price is not acceptable. Perhaps this restaurant used to be high end but now the entire menu screams of a lack of effort. Please save your money and go anywhere else in Oaxaca. I should say that the service was very good and the waiters were very knowledgeable and polite.
