Had to wait a bit long for the food but in the end it was worth it. Prices are actully lower than i would have expected for a ski resort. All in all i recomend this place if you are in the area. Also the entracne to the abandoned tunnels is right down the road so if you are in the area go check it out.

Had a blast tubing here! Wish the tickets were transferable but we had fun anyway!

Even two weeks after the last snow fall we had enough to enjoy the place. Great for beginners.

Last min decision to come up. Thought the price was reasonable and thex had a carpet. My son is 3 and is under 42" and there was tube's for him to go down solo and he loved it. Will come back for sure.

Trail to Donnor Peak. Beautiful views.

Possibly one of the weirdest snow resorts I have ever snowboarded in my career, I have been through worse, and better, but this place is just absurdly unworded, I can't really find a word for it, but all I can say: "A ski resort is a ski resort, and they RULE"

C
Cyrel Tramel

We spent two days snowboarding here and I'll have to say it was amazing. Seemingly tucked away it seemed to get a steady flow of people but definitely no crowds. It has a higher altitude and better powder too. You can't really go wrong with this place. They also have old school pricing Tuesday-thursday making it super affordable. And hey if you military or dependents they tack on an additional discount.

Stopped in after a hike to have some lunch and it was delicious. Great atmosphere and super nice staff. Got busy and crowded with unexpected rain but the staff handled with ease.

M

We actually walked through the train tunnels and they are amazing! The graffiti art, bats, and cool air make for a memorable hike. Bring a flashlight, good hiking shoes and some snacks as it is a trek. The views are incredible, too.

D
Donna Enos

We had such an amazing hike and so much fun exploring the historic railroad tunnel's.

I love this place! I learned how to ski here when I was five and it looks exactly the same then as it does now. It's totally an old school family style resort and still great for learning how to ski. I do come and visit and ski here from time to time and still enjoy it. It brings back lots of good memories of drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace or eating it really hard coming down the face of the main mountain. I'm glad this place is still here and I hope it stays the same.

Great vibes, people, and PIE Jack is a legend behind the bar Love it here

No wait times, great prices including rentals if needed. I believe its roughly 500 acres. Bar and restaurant inside the lodge with a nice fireplace to relax. Different runs for different levels of experience including a bunny run.

First time here, took the kids, this place is really nice and clean, food is really good and The bloody Marys are delicious.

T
The Mighty Trogdor

Nice, less expensive skiing with runs on the front and backside of the mountain. A little out of the way off I80, but far less crowded than the closer ones. Decent lodge with full bar. Also have a tube park with a magic carpet to get you to the top.

I hadn't done downhill skiing in 30 years and usually cross country ski at nearby Royal Gorge. My 12 year old son wanted to try downhill so for his birthday we went here. We found they had the perfect beginner slopes to introduce him (and reintroduce me) to downhill. We could see that if we wanted to develop our skills we could definitely do that here. All staff are friendly, helpful, and patient.

We had a great time at this location. We went tubing and it was perfect. I would say the tubing hills are definitely “beginner” hills and great for younger kids. Isa, was amazing and so nice. She was very helpful and made us feel very welcomed at the Ranch. Highly recommend this place for those looking for a smaller place to ski, and go tubing. We had no problem with parking or waiting in any lines.

This place is sick. Family owned, great snow. Also has an awesome learning area at a fraction of the cost of the big resorts.

K

Great place! My 10 and 13 year olds had only snowboarded over 1 other previous weekend. Donner was a great next step for them! The price was reasonable, the place was small enough that it was easy to see them when they came down the runs, and the food was decent (very kid food-ish…grilled cheese, fries, corn dogs etc). We went 2 days in a row and there was enough for them to do to keep it interesting!

M

I absolutely love this place and have so since I was five years old. A hidden gem to say the least. The prices of lift tickets are good and you can always bet on a fun filled, long day of incredible terrain. I am a proud supporter of Donner ski ranch and will continue to put money into the hands of people with deep roots in snowboarding culture.

T
Todd Winslow

Reluctant to share because this is one of my favorite places to ski. The backside gets a lot of snow and has a good terrain. It often feels as if I have the whole mountain to myself. I've always felt an incredible vibe from this place. Up and down all day long during Old-School Days for $49.00. I try to imagine this place as if I was a billionaire who bought a mountain and put up a few lifts.

D
David Pichsenmeister

nice & friendly family owned ski resort. Prices for both lift tickets and the bar & grill are very reasonable compared to other resorts in this area. The 25$ magic carpet only ticket is great for beginners too!

C
Catherine Clarke

Beat $35 bucks we’ve spent. We all had so much fun going down the hills. They have a bar and spot to drink and eat. We just went inside to buy our tickets. We did it for 2 hour. Tube borrowing is included in that price 35/person for 2 hours. My only gripe would be people not moving out of the way at the bottom. I almost took out small kids. Even some adults are slow to move. Like okay.., you wanna get hit? Okay go ahead lol. Great place overall!

Absolute Summit Hidden Jewel. Family friendly staff from the lift operators, kitchen/bar staff to the ski patrol! Been a season pass holder for almost 10 years, it's like a second home for us in the winter months.

"Cheap" and unassuming ski hill in Tahoe. A little different among the other corporate-owned mountains around. Update (Spring 2024): End of April and this is one of the few mountains still open. Super cheap tickets and a laid back attitude. Really enjoyed our weekend here.

This place was so cool. What a great hike. Any age hikers can make the trip, its a little slippery in places but not too bad. We had a lot of fun and were social distanced.

Best place for kids to play with snow. You can do whatever you want to do here without any charge.

Great Scenery and amazing views of the Tahoe donner valley. Granite faces to climb at every turn, trails for days, lakes and beautiful trees. A must see if your in the Tahoe area, to come and camp or just have lunch!

M

Donner Ski Ranch is the place to go for the best bang for your buck. The mountain is more than what you see at first with an entire backside that isn't visible upon arrival at the parking lot. Awesome time with just 5/6 lifts open and barely any crowds. If you're looking for an affordable few hours to hit the slopes, Dinner Ski Ranch will be perfect. They offer full and half day (12:30-4pm).

D

Awesome place to take the kids tubing in the snow! Can get busy, but you still get plenty of runs down the slope. Has a 2 hour time limit with your pass, which is more than enough time to enjoy.

K

This place is awesome. We went in Oct. The tunnels were chilly. We also hiked to the top of each tunnel.

Great rental service and park. Before the trip I'm getting back from I hadn't been there in a while and it seems since then they've added some new jump lines and stuff. Love the park, people and conditions and for the price I would recommend over the nearby parks.

I won't lie I was hesitant to come here. But when we got there I was not disappointed. Yes definitely could use some renovation but worthy. For sure I would take this in a heartbeat as I have a 4yo that I'm still unsure to what he would really want to do yet. So as I have done both I def recommend ski to start and this was far the best I had with him Could be crowded but expected. Atleast parking is fee and everything is there unlike walking far to get to magic carpet or rentals etc. Unlike other places that you could easily spend 1k for a day. I would def go back here with some friends/family. For a MLK weekend was not bad. Been to the epic locations but this is good for a beginner. Staff were friendly! Food is great and reasonable prices. I will go to this place in a heartbeat. Magic carpet is not arm and leg that you aren't obligated to be on rentals to teach your child to ski or snowboard. Rentals are reasonable price not 500$ lol Ima be supporting this place from now on.

Great ski/ snowboarding place! I went snowboarding for the first time here, and it was an amazing experience. Me and my dad got private lessons by a very sweet, patient and kind instructor. After the first day I was able to go down intermediate trails easily. Good ski lifts, and great trail diversity. The trail rankings are from easy, intermediate, advanced and black diamond, so there's something for everyone. There's skis and snowboards for rent, as well as most necessary equipment. Its definitely not a boujee place, but if you're looking for a good, affordable time its amazing! Here is an overall rating of everything: Snacks: 3.5/5 - good snacks available for understandably high prices, i would recommend bringing your own snacks. Resteraunt: 3/5 - restaurant is essentially a bar that happens to make food. Food was pretty mediocre but suitable Trails: 5/5 - great diversity, fun trails, overall great Rentals: 4/5 - i didnt rent so im not sure about the quality of the rentals, but seemed good. Lift: 5/5 - safe lift with kind operators. Had to ask to slow down the lift so i could get off slowly as it was my first time and the operators were all sweet and understanding. Lessons: 5/5 - my instructor was very helpful and nice, really helped me get the hang of it quickly. Highly recommend lessons! Overall rating: 5/5! Overall great place, highly recommend a visit.

Great day on the mountain. The staff was VERY friendly and accommodating, and everyone MASKED UP!) I fell 3x getting my ski-legs back (and once coming down the stairs with a bag full of food), and each time someone was there to lend a gloved hand to right me up. Add to that good weather and fresh powder, who could ask for more!❄

We have little kids who are just learning to ski. The price mid-week, reasonable rental costs (for growing kids), tubing on site, and decent ski shack food are all reasons to include this as an option. For adults, this place is great for beginners or a tune up after a long break. With mostly green and blue runs, everyone on the mountain is there to practice or spend time teaching kids, friends and significant others. I would also include the fact that the mountain runs end at the ski shack and parking lot. For deals, check out their "old school" pricing from Tuesday-Thursday.

T
Tom Hessler

We went there over the Christmas - New Year's break . snow was great we just got a storm in. Runs had great coverage. Some obstacles are not marked so be careful. Amenities are few here, but that is fine we were here to Ski and Board!

W

This place is the best place in Tahoe for families with children learning to ski, and people looking for a fun low key day on the slopes. Unless you need big drops and moguls, skip the hassle and crowds of the big places. You'll love it.

J
Jac Duc

Best and cheapest ski resort in the area!! I’ve been going here since I was a kid and even though the prices have increased since then, around 100$ for adult day pass is reasonable especially compared to other resorts. Not too hard to find parking either. Food could be a little better but thats the only downside

T

I was shocked by how empty it was on a Monday. There were more ski slope staff than skiers or snowboarders. Donner has a nice mix of slop difficulties.

Excellent small resort. Not crowded. The trails are varied. Staff is kind. Less on amenities due to the independent nature. I went two days and did greens and blues. Will defintely come back to do blacks.

We have been very happy with our experiences here. The mountain is enough to keep advanced skiers/boarders entertained and is also the perfect spot for beginners. The staff is friendly & helpful as well, which adds to the overall experience here.

Honestly a great place to learn. Cheaper tickets, free parking (though, muddy lot, bring some disposable grocery bags for your shoes). Went on MLK weekend and the magic carpet was packed. Actually easier to just walk up the slope if you are an adult (would be tiring for kids). I taught my kid myself and it was a blast. There are a couple long greens that are also great for beginners — but they’ll need a full lift ticket. The cafeteria food is hilarious. Looks good on paper … then you see what you get. There’s a microwave on the top floor if you bring your own food, which many do.

It's always a good day at DSR!Spend your money here, supporting a local family owned business. Just about every last ski resort in Tahoe is owned by a mega conglomerate based elsewhere. We've been coming here for 25+ years. Buy local! Their staff is from all over the world, and super friendly. Listen, you dont come here for fancy gondolas or apres ski champagne cocktails. You come here with your family to ride the humble but beautifully maintained 2 or 3 person chairs and enjoy some of the best snow on the north side. Head to the top of the mtn and go off the backside for big snow and long runs! After that, go have a beer at the Old40 bar and figure out how you can come back in the summer for a hike or some disc golf. Parking is free. The lot might get quite muddy. This photo is from MLK weekend Saturday, 11am on the FrontSide. We had all the blue and harder green runs to ourselves. Black runs were totally empty. Beginner areas were crowded.

Love this spot. Their mid-week discount makes skiing more affordable which is very appreciated. The staff (who all seem to come from Argentina) are kind and hard-working, and speak English very well. I saw multiple lifties going the extra mile helping new skiiers on the chairs, and also meticulously grooming the lift exit points which I have rarely seen anywhere else. They are especially accommodating to children and beginning skiiers/boarders. This is the ideal place to learn due to small size and chill vibe. If you're an intermediate or expert skier, you'll still find some great options on the backside. It's bigger than you think!

Did a quick hike at Donner Ski Ranch to get a feel for the resort. Interestingly enough it sits right next door to another great ski resort in Sugar Bowl. Anyway, this is perfect mountain for beginners and intermediate skiers to hone their skills while processing at a reasonable price. I couldn't recommend this place highly enough for that type of skier!

I have found it—the mythical, almost too good to be true snowboard spot. No crowds. No long lift lines. No rogue skiers trying to take me out. Just pure, uninterrupted shredding. The snow was perfect, the runs were smooth, and even better—this place is actually great for kids. The vibe? Chill. The stress? Nonexistent. The best part? I didn’t have to sell a kidney to afford a lift ticket. If you’re looking for a snowboarding experience where you don’t spend more time dodging people than actually riding, this is it.

Excellent experience! We went to DSR on Thursday, the snow is perfect, view is good, and the old school day’s price is very affordable. We don’t need to wait the lift which is awesome! The staffs of this resort are very nice and friendly. For this family run ski resort who have the almost 80 years history, we will continually support it. Wonderful place and will definitely come back. I really hope the snow season will never end and I can come here every week😆.

We went on Christmas day and decided to go back a few weeks later. It's a good place for beginners/intermediates and families. They have a moving carpet, and several lifts. The price is the best for Tahoe's area. One of the main reasons why we came back was because parking is easy and close by, and the place is not packed with people like other ski places. There are no lines for the lifts. The reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is because the place could have some improvements. Firstly, the indications of the lanes should be more clear. You have what seems to be a black diamond next to a beginner level lane, and the signals could be more clear. Also, there was a "closed" sign facing the opposite side of one lane which for me was not clear if the lane was closed and the sign moved with the wind or the lane was open since the sign was facing some weird direction. Also, whenever you indicated "the easiest way down" it seemed to me that the other option was easier (and it was not very clear to which direction they were actually pointing). Another thing that could be done would be having a list of the lanes opened and the level close to the entry of each lift (e.g. at the entry of lift 1, an indication of which lanes will be operating and the levels so that you know before being up there). I know there is a map close to the restaurant building, but this kind of info should be close to each lift entry. The next item that should be considered by the owners would be an improvement to the restrooms. Please consider adding new working lockers to the doors, for example, and closing gaps that make them less private than they should be. The only thing that really annoyed us was the gigantic mess in traffic caused by sugar bowl (which is another resort across the street). But that's not Donner's fault... We actually parked very close to Donner's entry even with our delay caused by sugar bowl inneficient parking staff.

A
Austin Rich

Went for the Donner hard enduro. Had fun, didn't really go in the resort part. Hot that weekend. The old tunnels are right across the street and worth a look at, bit of old west history.

M
Michaela Paugh

Great place for a lowkey and affordable ski. Lessons for snowboarding were okay, the instructor could have been more helpful. Really enjoyed the size although for me it’s definitely a one day ski place.

N
Natalia Petrov

Slopes not for beginners. Good price for lift tickets, old facilitie.

J

Amazing midweek deals to make skiing affordable, nice staff, and beautiful runs/slopes, the only downside is that the bunny slope (by magic carpet) is super short.

G
Genny (GG)

My favorite place where I find tubing or snowboarding. Ideal for those who do not know how to do it. Also, it's a great place because they have different levels for each one according to their experience, and they have instructors if you are not a quite expert or looking for some tips to be able to slides from the high or medium high of the mountain. This is one of my favorite snow spots with my whole family. The cafeteria area, very comfy, however, the bathroom size is wholly small

M
Maryśka Marciniak

Great family vibe but the tubing staff seemed very distracted. While we were tubing the girls were on their phones and just didn't seem to care about what was happening around them. The girl at the ticket booth was very annoyed with us when we came to the downstairs booth to get tubing tickets. The kitchen staff was great and so were the lift operators. The food was good and overall we had a great time!! Totally recommend 👍

Where I was at was the Donner Summit Tunnel trail which takes you on a very easy hike through the old railroad tunnels that you may have seen above Donner Lake up the mountain side, box looking tunnels that yes are empty and you can hike through them. The images I posted both show graffiti and yes there's a lot of it everywhere, but it's more like graffiti art, which in fact it was going on in one small part of our walk. Great views and much more aggressive hiking or rock climbing if you prefer. Parking free can get some what busy but I don't think parking is a problem and has porta potties here and there. OH! I should mention try to stay on main trails don't go off into the bushy trails we about were overcome by thousands of mosquitos, definitely where long sleeve that you can remove and probably spray down, once we got on the main trail or rocks it was fine.

Donner Ski Ranch is one of the last value ski resorts in Tahoe. Plenty of terrain for recreational skiers, although most runs are fairly short. We enjoyed the throwback mid week pricing. It's an old resort that hasn't been updated but that doesn't matter to me. Some great views of Donner Lake from the top. Plenty of staff. Easy parking.

First time skiing in Tahoe area in last 10 years so needed something affordable and with easy runs to get back into skiing. Parking was no problem. The drive to get there was simply amazing. Facilities are a little dated and cramped but the skiing is amazing. Renting equipment was quick and easy. The staff does a great job getting you in and out. Overall a wonderful day. I would go back again and again. I look forward to seeing the area ski resorts around the area but Donner ski ranch is one of my favorites.

Great place to snowboard, and enjoy a good day on the slopes. Good restaurant and bar. One of the last family owned resorts.

N
Nor Cal Drones (Average Hobbyist)

Great place to avoid the craziness at some other places like palisades and Northstar. Parking. They have a slow start on powder days but that’s because it’s one of the last privately owned resorts in the country. If you’re teaching young kids to ski or snowboard they don’t need some big mountain like palisades, you will save time and money coming here not ignoring the traffic and crowds. The only thing is that the resort is extremely dated and needs a major facelift but that’s what makes it cheap so enjoy what they have to offer or go wait in traffic.

DSR is so stress free. The people there are all nice. There's nothing to not like about it. If your just learning to ride or ski. This is your spot.

Geoff Smick

Great smaller, family friendly resort. If you just wanna chill day on the slopes with no lift lines and more budget prices, this is a great spot. Well there isn’t a ton of dirt like many of the larger mountains nearby, Dan ski Ranch offers a decent amount of terrain to explore. It’s a perfect place for me to go with our family since our kids are still learning to ski. They have a small lodge with a restaurant and bar and they also offer tubing, which is great for the little ones.

Vijai Baskar

Affordable decent place to go skiing as a family. Their beginner hill is so small and if you have to ride the hill completely you have to walk back up to get on the carpet which is about half way to the top of the hill. The blue and green routes were good. Would come back again if none in my party are beginners.

J

low key family style resort above Donner lake. good for beginners and to spend a couple of hours as a stop over. few slopes but no crowd and less expensive lift ticket.

K

Came here on a busy weekend ( Presidents Day), and boy, was it packed. No where to store your boards, unorganized lines onto lifts. They also oversold the inner tubes, so you were lucky to get on a run 4 times within two hours. At $35 a head, that's a might pricy inner tube ride.. this place does great in non peak times.. Also, FYI, please be safe. Someone had a gruesome accident, so they shut down the inner tube sections.. Play at your own risk. They won't refund you either if they have to close due to an accident.. I met some folks that only went once and didn't get a refund.

We went there for tubing. Our family of 20 were the only ones there which was great! At first the slopes were slippery and we were tubing to the bottom of the hill. But after a while we started to stop about 1/5th of the way left to the bottom, which was a bit of a bummer. $34/person - a bit overpriced for the experience but it was the only place open for tubing at the time. However, overall, we had a great time by God's grace!

A

There is a lot of good about this place, but one huge downside that I can’t overlook. First, the good, the people who worked there were lovely and kind and friendly. The food at the grill was good, and the vibe was fun. Also, the price was incredibly affordable (for skiing) on a Tuesday as part of their midweek special. Now, the bad. Their ski lifts do not have any bars or safety support. For most of them, it doesn’t feel all that bad because there is a lot of snow to pad the fall if anyone were to drop off the chair… yet there is one really big lift that goes over a rocky cliff and frankly it’s terrifying to go up. For this reason alone, I don’t plan to return with my family until they install safety bars.

I like the affordability and the proximity to where we live however I don’t like parking in the lower lot and getting my shoes and car all muddy. Sounds silly, I know. But I got so much mud on the outside and inside of my car both times I have gone this year. They need to add drainage from the runoff and/or add gravel to the lower lot. They also need to fix the bathrooms. There was one Out of Order stall in the upper and lower bathrooms. That left two working stalls. I’ll still go to Donner, I just wish they would invest some money into improving the facilities.

Ski runs themselves were good. Parking is convenient. However, the bathrooms are atrocious (both male and female). Got there -before- it opened and the bathrooms were already a mess (no toilet paper or soap and overflowing trash). The lodge is pretty bare bones, and there isn't a lot of seating. The ski lifts don't have bars/ski rests which feels downright dangerous on some lifts. Still, it's a cheap, family-run ski slope. You get what you pay for.

We came here after Diamond Peak was completely packed by 10:30 a.m. with no parking. Donner was the only reasonably priced option that wasn’t overcrowded. Pros: Free and plentiful parking, fair pricing ($99 half-day adult ticket), and prompt ski and boot rentals. The runs were fine overall, though the beginner run felt a bit steep. Cons: The resort feels run down and could use renovations. Rental skis and boots were very worn. The cafeteria was chaotic and understaffed — it took about 20 minutes to get two pulled pork sandwiches and an order of fries, and there was no ketchup available. Cleanliness was also a concern: no soap or paper towels in the cafeteria restrooms, no hand sanitizer dispensers, and food staff were not wearing hair nets. Overall, it works as a backup option, but the aging facilities, long food wait, and hygiene issues take away from the experience.

Local place small more family on a budget. I would not likely ski here because of better choices in the area.

We chose Donner over other tubing options because they are more relaxed with height and age restrictions. However, it was absolute chaos. Only one person working the ticket counter, with a line all the way the way down the hallway and out the door. Many of the other places allow you to pre-purchase tickets with a reservation. Not available yet here, but seems like it would make things better for the business and customers. Will only go somewhere with reservations in the future

The skiing was great, but we waited over 1 1/2 hours for two burgers, and a hotdog that they only gave us half of a bun!

Overpriced! I paid $39 a person to stand in a 30 min tubing line for the smallest tube hill I've ever seen. You may get 3 or 4 runs with the wait. Food is also way overpriced for poor quality.

Unfortunately my son did not learn much about how to ski at his ski lesson because he had a difficult time understanding the person with his thick accent and choice of English grammar for the instructions. Sadly I had to interpret for my son by joining in the ski lesson as an additional person. Because we spent more time trying to understand his instructions than actually practicing it, we did not really get a good lesson out of it. Money wasted for the ski lesson and having to add me on as an additional person in the lesson.

This relates to the snow tubing specifically. We went over spring break and snow was dwindling, but the resort was still open. We paid $100 (non-refundable) for me to go with my 2 kids. Even under ideal snow conditions, this would be a short run, not likely much fun for anyone older than 7. What we got was three short lanes of dirt mixed with snow, pock marked by weeks-old groomer tracks. The tube would stop half way down the hill. We did 3 runs and my youngest kid burst into tears... we just left. They clearly should have shut it down weeks ago. Shame on this resort. We're never going back. Avoid their tubing. Not even remotely worth it.

The snow tubing here is no fun. Just a couple of small tubbing lanes are not good enough to get the fun. The Ski lessons here are totally rip off. Over 15 people in one group for an hour was pathetic. Instructor hardly could check on each individual. His all time was wasted in making each and everyone standing. If you really want to learn skiing, go for a place who provides better attention to students.

Horrible experience. Rentals are old and from another era. They don’t have a lot of options with sizes. Was stuck on chair 4 for half hour, lifts do not work properly and are slow. Trails were not groomed today. Not to mention backside lifts close earlier at 3.30 which is not prominently mentioned anywhere. They have trail inflation, super similar trails going parallel to each other marked as different. Do not recommend

The guy with the childish mustache was very rude and cursed at our table while taking orders saying "I got ish to do" I was so stuck by that I was left speechless. Wow bro, serving this table IS your "stuff to do". The guy Wouldn't serve drinks while walking back and forth by our table over 4 times. Needless to say, we left and will probably never return. There's plenty of places to spend a dollar but this place doesn't have to be one of them.
