Jake and Dorothy's is the epitome of a small town cafe. The atmosphere is that of your family cafe that you've been going to for breakfast since you were a child with your grandparents. The food always tastes freshly made and well prepared. The pies are enormous and always have meringue to the heavens. Everything tastes exactly like you expect with no surprises and always clean and fast.
Great food (we had the lunch special chicken fried steak & fried pork chops). Loved the old hometown feel. The waitresses were friendly & attentive. We're looking forward to going again.
Friendly wait staff and delicious food! Yum.
CASH OR CHECK ONLY! This place was great! The staff was friendly and the food.... their pies are out of this world! I ordered the chicken fried steak with waffle fries were great. The batter was seasoned just right. The waffle fries were a little greasy and I wish they were crispier. The gravy needed a little salt and it was thick. I will go back when I'm in town!
Great Lil mom and pop restaurant. Chicken fried steak has to be the best I've had. Service is great. We really loved Dawn. She was so much fun. Must try if you haven't! Oh and don't forget to have some pie when you go. OR just have pie and coffee. Loved it!
Great Ole time atmosphere apple pie is great
Food took forever to come out, I just about broke into the refrigerator with the pies! Great mother's day meal, famous chicken fry with the works! The gave a free cheesecake to all who came into dine.
We have been staying with friends the past week and I love trying new places. And this definitely made me feel at home. Great food and service! My boyfriend had the famous chicken fried steak and he ended up bringing one of them home. He loved it! Definitely going to go back and enjoy more on the menu and try out the pies. Best meal I have ever had while being out. I also love the fact that it's nothing but cash or check.
Jake & Dorothy's great place. Been there since 1948. The counter and stools look like they are the original. They were busy with good amount of people. Service was great. Now my son and I didn't eat we had coffee and sweet roll. Many refills offered. The place was great sill looks like a cafe in the past. Full menu beautiful pie. Many types. The place was clean. Ladies that worked there were pleasant smiled took care of there customers. If I'm in stephenville again I will go back. It's a place the the regulars come in daily.
Always love a good steak! Got the steak for 2 splitting it with my husband, next time I'll definitely be getting the unlimited steak! Delicious! It was gone before we knew it and wanted more! $1 burger night is always a cheap, easy route to not having to make supper. Makes great leftovers the next day as well! Delicious every time I go!
amazing, I 100% recommend they have such a loving atmosphere I come here every Tuesday. Food is amazing and cheap love Jake and Dorthy’s
Personally I really like this place felt like home in a nostalgia kind of way, it reminded me of hanging out with my grandparents with just a bunch of friends and family around 🥰 people were just talking with eachother and being present it was really nice 💜 food was great so tasty nothing beats a good hot meal on a cold day, my husband and kids cleaned their plates too. It may not big some big fancy place with modern noise but its warm and friendly and we will definitely be back next time we are in the area! Oh! Btw the coffee and cheesecake was so DELICIOUS! Coffee cup was so cute too 😊
Great food, great service, if you leave here hungry, that's your fault.
Very delicious their chicken fry breakfast but the only thing bigger than the meal is the cost. A bit high for 2. One was a child 3 years old and had pancakes
very nice servers. food took 1 min to get here. i ate all my chicken fried steak.
Me and the Mrs stopped in for lunch on our way to the chickenhouse from Ft Worth. Such a great old place! My wife had the turkey sandwich with chips, and I had just a hamburger. The best hamburger I've had in a long time! Soooo good! Lots of smiles, great service! Thanks y'all
Food was hot and fresh. Coffee was also. Served us water with our menu. Very nice and friendly waitress. Will definitely go back
The house coffee is bold and strong but not bitter, a must for a morning cup! The food is amazing and filling. The sausage was a little dry and the gravy was a little on the bland side. Everything taste really fresh and the staff is on top of taking care of their customers. I would say this is better than many restaurants back home in the dallas area. For a small town family restaurant, it is a definite must stop by and try! P.S: they offer a XL chicken fried steak. They aren't kidding about the XL. Be hungry!
Great place to have breakfast. One of the oldest dinners in Texas! We had 6 adults and got stuffed for $70. The biscuit and gravy are to die for. Service was awesome. Very friendly and funny to boot. The biscuits are scratch made, and boy, can you tell it. We were visiting family in Stephenville. We will be back soon.
We get burgers there on Tuesday nights, and Erin is always very polite, helpful, and kind. Everyone is nice and offer drinks while we're waiting. I have had a great experience every time, and I look forward to my visits there.
This is the type of Cafe, that everyone knows each other. The waitress was so amazing. Food was fabulous. We were just passing through and the service we had, we will go again if we pass through again.
My friend and I stopped in after an appointment. We truly enjoyed the 9.00 lunch special. The food was amazing, and the service was excellent👏👏👏
I love the old mom and pop cafe's. This one is no exception. Currently open just shy of 75 years. The counter and seats were a little worn, but not in a bad way, in a nostalgic reminder kind of way. I ordered a simple breakfast and was happy with it in every way. But even more impressive was the staff. We were served by our waitress as well as a couple others as they passed by. You just don't get this quality of food and service from a box franchise.
Went with the $9:00 lunch special, whoa, pork chops n gravy, a salad, mashed potatoes, pinto beans, corn bread, pineapple cake. Friendly service n ice tea. Tasty n filling. Thanks.
Jake and Dorothy's has been a family favorite for many, many decades. The chicken fried steak and waffle fries are comfort food at its best. The peanut butter silk pie is out of this world! Time marches on and many things change, so that makes the old reliable standards even more precious. We go out of our way to make it to Stephenville just to eat here.
For Breakfast…I had nothing that rates LESS than “Good”…most was “Perfect”. I had Eggs Over Medium, Hash Browns, seared whole jalapeños, Bacon with Biscuits & Gravy. If you think those breakfast staples are Easy, “any breakfast restaurant can do those well”…you are untraveled and wrong.
I went home for the holidays so I stopped by there for breakfast... they were open on New Year's Day!!! The waitress asked me if I had had my traditional cabbage and peas for good luck in the new year... I said no so she whisked some right over... the pancakes were just the way I make them at home not the commercial kind... went back for dinner and had the best chicken fried steak in the world
Catfish was great and so was the cheeseburger. Their food is Always consistent Recommend it to anyone. Prices reasonable and service is outstanding We are frequent customers. 2-4 times a week. Oh yeah. Cherry pie to die for and, so are the other pies.
Jake and Dorothy's us an old style cafe that was originally opened in the 1950's or earlier. It is a basis cafe with the old time atmosphere. The breakfast I had was very good and service was pleasant and quick. It is a popular place with locals so expect to see a busy place but they were very good with the appropriate social distancing. It's a great place for an old style cafe.
Definitely not fast food. But if you want genuin awesome food. You came to the right place. It is well worth the wait. I highly recommend. This place is filled with history as well with over 75 years of service.
I have very fond memories of eating here with my dad in Stephenville. Founded in 1948 Jake and Dorothy's is one of those old time diners that serves up the best in classic Texas comfort foods. When you walk you feel like you have been transported to another era. It looks axactly the same as it did when I was a kid. If you find yourself here, do yourself a favor and order the chicken fried steak! It is simply the best. Go check them out
Doesn't get better than this. Been going here since 1990 and never pass up an opportunity when I go back home. Absolutely the BEST CFS around. Period. Double period. I love everything about this place, the bar, the booths, the cake display, just... everything. Always smiles beaming from everyone, both patrons and employees. There isn't a bad thing on the menu, but ya gotta have the waffle fries and CFS for lunch at least once in your life or you simply haven't bothered living a life worth living. Trust me...
Great little cafe right off the beaten path. Had an excellent cheeseburger, that had to be pressed down just to eat it, and waffle fries. Service was really good, my cup stayed filled and the waitress checked on me several times. The restaurant was clean and it was good to see the staff helping each other out. Will definitely be returning.
Just like when you get to go home and eat mom’s cooking, this is that kind of experience. I showed up an hour after the sunset on a night of freezing rain and they were still working hard making unreal Chicken Fried Steak, mashed potatoes and salad. Really great breading on the chicken fried steak that was thick, but doesn’t cut the roof of your mouth. It tasted wonderful.
This was my first time and I loved it! The waiter was super sweet. She said everything was good and she wasn’t lying! The French fries are delicious and I LOVED the patty melt. The chicken fried steak was the best I’ve ever had it was so tender! And the peanut butter pie was good also. I will definitely be going again.
This was on my list to visit so we planned a trip specifically coming here from lunch on our way back home to Fort Worth from the hill country. Caught them after the Sunday lunch rush so sat right down and ordered. Love the old school diner with the soda fountain bar. Fresh pies were on display and had to save room too. The staff is all very friendly and down home. The prices are reasonable as well. I had the small (next size is double and then a triple party is XL) chicken fried steak with their fresh cut waffles fries. The CFS was remarkable and lived the gravy as well. Glad I opted for smaller size so I could have some pie. My wife let me have a bite of her patty melt and it was so delicious! You can taste the difference in a fresh groin beef patty too! The pies were amazing but my cherry jubilee was exceptional. Loved the homemade crushed crust and nuts. Great place to stop and have some down home cooking!
Omigoodness, how is it that we are this many days old and never knew about this place that's only 2-1/2 hrs from home????? We just enjoyed their famous chicken fried steak made with ribeye and hand cut waffle fries. Thank you, Dawn, for serving us well and filling us in on the history of Jakes and Dorothy's. We are already looking forward to stopping in the next time we're passing through.
Very friendly staff . Great atmosphere. Food was delicious we had the biscuits and gravy and fried catfish . Next time we are going to try the burgers as they looked fabulous.
Been going here almost 40 yrs. This is a consistently great family owned/ run business. BE sure to have some CFS AND WAFFLE FRIES. The pies are awesome
A down home diner that's been around for 75 years, justifiably famous for their chicken fried steak, melt in your mouth tender and served up on a bed of homemade gravy. I had sides of hash browns, eggs and biscuits for an amazing brunch (but don't expect to see calorie counts on this menu). Written up in Texas Monthly and featured on a Day Tripper episode, Jake & Dorothy's Cafe is well worth a visit whenever you're in Stephenville.
Drove 400 miles to eat one of their famous chicken fried steaks. I've had just as good or better in southeast Texas. Also, there were a lot of fly's in the restaurant.
Tender and delicious chicken fried steak. Gravy was underneath steak which was different but good. Be advised they close when they feel like it, not 11pm like the closing hours state. I was happy with our visit when it came to the food. But I will say they for sure are in no rush and doing whatever they want in the meantime. Waitresses (young) having loud personal conversations behind the counter, shouting from across the room instead of just walking over to ask if they are out of item on menu. Noone wants to hear all that when trying to enjoy their meal.
The lunch was alright, and it did take a while to come out. But the pie at this place is to die for! I tried the cherry, coconut cream, and chocolate meringue. Very good!
This place has been her since rhe 50 my dad used to eat here when he went to Tarleton states and he was 83
I had chicken fried chicken, salad with ranch dressing and crinkle cut fries. The meal tasted fine and was exactly as you would expect. Fries were very greasy but unavoidable and were great. Cathy was very pleasant and friendly and very attentive to our condiment and beverage refills. I would definitely return here again.
Great food! Had a cheeseburger and onion rings. Rest of the family loved their food as well. Homemade pies were excellent! Waitress was very sweet and nice. The ONLY disappointment was the drinks. $2.25 for ONE can of Dr Pepper-no refills- is crazy! I'll eat here again, only drinking water!
Still great chicken fried steak! Was a bit disappointed that the salad was not cold and the coconut meringue pie was not as good as I remembered it. Don’t go for the ambiance. This place has been around a while. Glad we happened along on a Thursday evening because a sign on the door said “Closed on Wednesdays until further notice”. The website says open daily. If we were in Stephenville again, we would probably stop in.
Restaurant has been there for a long time. Food was good and prepared correctly and the service was fast and friendly.
Jake & Dorothy's is a quintessential diner/"greasy spoon" experience, and that's for the better and the worse. Expect friendly service, good food, but aging atmosphere. Food The Food at Jake & Dorothy's is good, but it falls short of truly being great. The food seemed fresh, but each item had some issues. In my meal, the hash browns were a little under-fried (I insist that good hash browns should be fried to crispy), the eggs were underseasoned, and the gravy had a slightly congealed texture to it. Having said all that it was still good food. It was hearty, and the omelet (when eaten as a whole) had plenty of spice. Service I have nothing bad to say about the service. The people working there were friendly and welcoming, and they took good care of me. You still get a small town diner feel to it, although it did give the feel less of a waitstaff waiting on tables and more of a couple older ladies minding us. Still recommend highly. Atmosphere Jake & Dorothy's feels like a time capsule of restaurants from a few decades ago. Everything from the types of cups they use (and the fact they serve soda in cans instead of from a fountain) makes you feel like you've stepped back in time (but don't worry they now accept credit cards, except American Express). The problem is that everything had a weathered feel to it. For some examples, my table had a slight wobble, and the front bar had a bunch of grooves warn into it. I still enjoyed the food and my time, but the atmosphere could do with an update.
Wonderful atmosphere. Great server! Kept glasses filled real well. Had the lunch specials. I had the catfish...delicious!! Hubby has the chicken fried steak.... was okay. Sides: awesome pinto beans and cornbread, waffle fries....didn't eat because not done enough, side salads good, coleslaw great, and chocolate cake okay. We'll come back on our next trip.
This is your typical cozy, mom and pop breakfast diner. Good food, friendly service, full of regulars who get called by name by the staff. Average age of the customers and staff is probably 60 (this is a compliment). Food was home cooked tasting and good. Restrooms could use a cleaning. There was a small roach on the floor in the dining room.
The food was cold. Hamburger meat cold. Waffle fries cold. Had to slices of pie to go and they were the smallest slices I have ever seen at $6.95 a piece. The waitress was very friendly
This was definitely a local hangout as the waitresses knew many of the patrons by name. We had the breakfast special which was a great value. 2 eggs, meat and 2 pancakes for $6.95. The food was good, bacon crispy and generously-sized and the pancakes were average pancakes. The diner needs some updating. It was very clean with old-school booths and tables. It's a big restaurant and can seat large groups. The waitresses were pros. I didn't like the coffee, I drink it black.
Chicken fried steak was horrible. Maybe it was freezer burn, it was almost gamey which is concerning for beef. And it was beyond chewy. It looked tasty and the batter was cooked just right but I dunno what was inside it. The salad, burger and fries were okay. The fries left a puddle of grease in the wax paper. But I wish I had sent back the steak. I was too tired to deal with it.
Service was great, and I was very excited to get a good cafe meal. I ordered the ham and Swiss sandwich that was made with a half slice of boiled ham , Swiss on 2 slices of bread. Did not taste bad but was expecting a little more for $7. The waffle fries were very greasy and soggy. Should I have a chance to eat here again I think I will stick with the specials or breakfast.
The food arrived quickly (we were the only one's there). It was warm, but not hot upon arrival. The chicken fried steak was very tender, but the crust on it was not crispy and I felt it could have used more seasoning. The waffle fries were kind of soft and soggy. The ambience was small town Americana 5/5, the chocolate delight pie was absolutely delicious 5/5, the entrees that I ordered regarding the chicken fried steak is only 3/5 and I can get better in my home town. I tried a bite of their cheese burger and it was good, but again, a little more seasoning would have done it some good 6/10. All this to say that if I come through again, this is more likely to be a pie stop than a food stop. I also think they may not have given me the Special price. They had written on a white board that the Sunday special was CFS and I ordered Chicken Fried Steak (the smallest one at that), I recall my meal being $17. Good food, not great. I am surprised that they were mentioned in Texas Monthly magazine, as I have eaten better food in Stephenville, before.
Easy to find using google maps. Just passing through, this was on a postcard in our hotel room. My son and I went for dinner and desert.😁 a lot of choices for pie or cake. Large portions of desert, we took 75% to go. Dinner was ok. The salad portion was great. My son ordered sirloin it was delicious, easy to cut, and chew. I ordered ribeye it was cooked to well on one side and medium on the other🙈. I ordered medium(?). My ribeye also had a lot of fat and tough to chew pieces. The staff is very friendly to much chatter to boss lady about each other. When a customer is sitting at the counter less than two feet away. Don’t talk about other staff. Also if you do not like the way they are doing something you don’t like or not to standard talk with them NOT about them. Just someone passing through
Exactly what you would expect from a small town diner. Nothing fancy, just decent food served with a smile. I was bummed that my guest and I weren’t able to order the CFS lunch special for $7 so instead we got the Chicken Fried Steak and Salad for $14 each. 😒 Fortunately the chicken fry was FAR from over seasoned. It had good texture but needed a heap of help from the table side S&P shakers. Tasty honey mustard dressing. Take a slice of pie home. It’s fun to share!
We were so looking forward, to Jake and Dorothy’s. Having eaten there several times over the past 24 years. I ordered okra, my husband squash . They were out of both. Desert case empty. Baked potato was microwaved as I watched. I think chicken fried steak was frozen and deep fried. Toast was not even toasted. They weren’t busy, but waitress seem flustered. Couldn’t remember I had tea my husband water. My husbands baked potato wasn’t really cooked. I don’t mind mine with hard pieces so ate mine. He sent potato back and got onion rings. I didn’t ask. Didn’t eat most of them. Not sure if we’ll be back. We hadn’t been in about 7 years, we live in Cleburne.
Stopped in about 2:30 in the afternoon on Friday 6/28/19. Heard this place had the 2nd best chicken fried steak in TX. First off the price of this dish is $18.95 which includes 2 chicken fried steaks, choice of vegetable and a side salad. Salad was chopped lettuce and about 6 small diced tomatoes on top. No mashed potatoes offered at all. So opted for the waffle fries. My first bite I could taste the uncooked flour either in the gravy or the steak itself. It was very bland and had no crunch to it at all. Waffle fries did not have any snap to them either. I tried 3 bites and gave up. They offered me a redo on the chicken fried steaks by a different cook. The tea and the salad were not great either. So I decided to decline. They did however comp me my meal minus the tea but I was really looking for a great lunch.
I absolutely love little diners, but this one left so much to be desired. I gave 2 stars simply for the waitress who was sweet and friendly (even if she wasn't wearing her mask). The food was awful. The baked potatoes were hard. The steaks were tough and flavorless. And, I make better sandwiches at home. Such a disappointment. We had high hopes with the 4.3 rating.
We came from Austin to try the famous chicken fried steak that has been raved by the Day Tripper, etc., we were very disappointed. The chicken fried steak lacked a lot of flavor, so did the gravy. We also ordered a hamburger, that that as well lacked flavor, the only thing we liked was the homemade fries, the owner invented the waffle fries. The service was superb!!!! Will we go back, we don't think so, we tried.
After all the good ratings, this was very disappointing. My husband simply gave it a "thumbs down" which is sad because he got the chicken fried steak special. I had biscuits and gravy - and the biscuits were average. The white gravy was flavorless and gloopy, probably as tasty as wallpaper paste (not that I've eaten wallpaper paste). I ended up scraping the gravy off of my biscuits and using jelly instead. The waffle cut potatoes (which they're famous for) definitely needed seasoning, although it WAS a huge portion. The highlight was the carrot cake (that came with the lunch special). Very moist and flavorful, with good cream cheese frosting. The sweet tea was good too. The service was friendly and our server checked on us frequently. However, the food just wasn't very good, so we won't be back.
If your a town local this is probably a great place for you, but as for someone not from the area you are definitely treated as so. Our waitress said maybe three sentences to us while she was having other conversations with people across the restaurant. There was countless flies a guy was actually sitting there swatting them with a fly swatter! Also there was a roach that came out of the wall where a whole bunch of wires were coming out from. We had a simple order that took almost an hour to come out. People who came in after us were actually being served before us. Part of our order was over cooked. It was okay but I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.
We waited an hour to get our food on a Sunday around 1 ish. I got the special which was CFS with mashed potatoes, salad, carrots, and the two guys got burgers. I ended up getting and cold CFS with waffle fries. Never once was I told they were out of potatoes, or else I would have asked for something different. There is no seasoning at all on burgers nor CFS, and fries were soggy.
I came up to visit my nephew who goes to Tarleton state. He had heard from alumni that they used to always go to this café and they had great prices. We looked up online and the prices were awesome. It said the chicken fried steak plate was $7.95 appetizers were $4.95. I had my puppy with me so we weren’t going into the café. We were just gonna order to go food. I ordered it without even looking at the menu. I had already seen the menu online.. At counter waiting for my food, I decided to scroll through the menu. Come to Find the prices to be more than triple. The chicken fried steak Was $17.95. I had ordered two of them and an order of jalapeño poppers. My bill was almost $50. My nephew and I took our meals to the park to eat while my puppy ran around. I am not kidding when I say the worst in my entire life. It tasted like they made chicken fried steak and the waffle fries in the microwave. They were both the batter was not crunchy. I was telling my nephew maybe the salad is the best part of the whole plate. I will say, thankfully the lettuce was crisp but….. Instead of the letters, be chilled or cold it was lukewarm. Neither of us ate a quarter of the chicken fried steak and we probably had about two waffle fries and piece. We had both been very hungry, but both our stomach were upset after eating a very little amount. We threw the rest of the meals a way. Oh, I forgot to mention that the jalapeño poppers were disgusting as well. I have never in my life a worse than this. After we threw away our me, we headed back to where we were going, and even when we passed the café, We both felt like we were going to puke just seeing the place.
Really confused at how this restaurant has more than 4 stars on Google. One of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had in a long time. Let’s start with the food, shall we? Since that’s the most important thing. Everything came out room temperature or cold. Chicken fried steak- disgusting. Meat was so chewy and fatty I couldn’t even swallow. Waffle fries- soggy, flavor-less, sad. Side salad- literally just a chinch of iceberg lettuce and a small slice of tomato but completely drenched in so much ranch I wanted to gag. And for me to complain about that is wild since I am a ranch fanatic and dip literally everything in it! Onion rings had potential but were also cold. Chicken sandwich was okay, but also lacked flavor, seasoning, and life. Literally didn’t enjoy any of the food we were served. Now for the service. Waiters and hostesses seemed friendly enough initially, but barely came to our table after first encounter. We waited WAY TOO LONG for each part of our meal from the drinks to the salads to the cold, lifeless entrees. Pretty sure they forgot about us or lost our order. Who knows but it was ridiculous. We probably waited a good half hour for our lettuce, I mean salads, and only got them when we were forced to question the waitress why they were taking so long. We watched several tables who were seated and ordered much later than us receive their meals first. Everyone in the restaurant industry knows that’s not how it’s supposed to work. I don’t care if your regular of 40 years just walked in the door. The tickets should come out in the order which they come. And finally, the atmosphere is something I can only describe as strange and off putting. Obviously, the restaurant is old and has never been updated, which I take no issue with. Sometimes that old diner feel can add a sense of charm. However, that is not the case here. In some restaurants it’s hard to have a conversation because there is an echo or music blaring throughout the room. This was the complete opposite. The room was full of people but it was strangely quiet. I felt nervous about having a conversation because everyone in the restaurant would be hearing my every word. Not to mention I already felt everyone’s gaze toward us. Maybe because we had a baby at our table? Maybe because at our table sat the only non-white individual in the entire establishment? Maybe because we were the only table with customers under the age of 50? Who knows the true reason, but all of these things were true, and there were definitely glances aimed towards us during our visit. In addition to all of this, our bill was the wrong amount for what we ordered, and we were being charged too much, which we had to address with the waitress. Overall a really uncomfortable and disappointing experience. No real redeeming factor for us to ever visit again.
A random stop there this morning for breakfast. Thinking it's been around so long it has to be good! Well keep driving the reviews are deceiving!! The place is old. Old like phone wires hanging out of the wall onto the table. Flies yes many, hot inside yes! Food forget it. Country fried steak stringy, tough and bland. Club sandwich made with a cheap sweet mayo and dry! Our friends meal was the breakfast special and he wondered if he ordered the childs size portion! Total waste and will not ever return!!
Don’t get breakfast here. I ordered biscuits and gravy and sausage here. Sausage and gravy were cold and the biscuits were hard as a rock. There wasn’t any flavor to anything. Left most of my meal uneaten
I Called in an order for some residents. I said specifically what I wanted and she read it back to me and it was right. Then we got the order and it was wrong, so we called to see if they can fix it. They told us that they could not fix the order even though a food allergy was present. It costs money to replace hamburgers. So we had to buy a new one when the cook messed up our order. So if you order anything from this establishment make sure the order is correct or you will be told to pay again even though the error was theirs. I'm highly disappointed in this place. I have been eating there for years and never had an issue until now. The employee I spoke to said she has worked there for years and that this was the rules per the owners instructions.
I GOT A RESPONSE BACK FROM THIS MESSAGE LAST NIGHT AND THEY GIVE THE SAME RESPONSE EVERY SINGLE TIME TO ANYBODY THAT SEND A REVIEW. They have no intent on fixing any problems they have because if you go back eight years, everybody’s complaining about the taste of the food ,no seasoning ,they do not know how to cook waffle FRIES which are horrible. All they ever say is they’ve been in business for 71 years and they do not serve bad food. Well that’s a bunch of bologna. YOU wanna prove ME OUT THEN YOU NEED TO GO EAT THERE AND YOU’LL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT !! Do your self a favor and keep driving. This place would not have lasted a year in a bigger market. We stopped in today after going to the great Peach Festival in Weatherford. We drove all the way here because of good things we heard. Flavor does NOT EXIST HERE. There is No taste on anything we had . We both had the Chicken Fried Steak- I will say it is probably the most tender and Flavorless CFS ever. Absolutely no flavor and No seasoning. They have been making excuses about Not using salt and seasoning for years and years” Please read past reviews as far back as 8 years. The server did Not listen to me- I SAID I WANTED CHRISPY FRIES. These waffle fries who they claim Who ever Jake is , that He invented them. They are absolutely HORRIBLE. “ soggy and raw in the middle” People been saying this for So many years. I do not eat mash potatoes and that waffle mess was the only option- nice size portion - but soggy and cold. They have been making excuses for many years that cooks do not know how to cook them. Time to throw the waffle fry cutter away and buy quality fries that have flavor and that will be Chrisp!! I have never put So Much Salt & Pepper on my food ever- and they are Proud of no seasoning. We paid over $50.00 for this mess when we could have got great steaks with flavor somewhere else. Do not tell me you have been around 70 years and you do not serve bad foods. You need to bring a consultant in to review this mess you serve. Sorry to be harsh but this is the honest truth and we certainly will never be back
Food was good. Didn’t feel like 39$ was a good price for two burgers and some fries so I called and asked about it. Well the lady on the phone said that the fries and burgers were separate. I asked if that’s the case why when I ordered my burger you asked me waffle fries or onion rings? Thinking that they came together. She rudely replied well it says it on the menu. Rude rude rude!! Don’t ask if I want them if you don’t tell me that they cost extra? The place is trash in my opinion after such a rude experience. I also tipped her 10$ so we got a burger and fries for ultimately 50$. Had I known she was gonna be so rude I wouldn’t have tipped anything.
If you’re expecting to get a good cheap breakfast , go somewhere else. The waitress asked us, onion rings or French fries or a salad with our meal, assuming it came with the meal, with the way she asked. When we got our bill, we were charged for all the sides. $15 in sides we DIDN'T WANT. We thought we had to make a choice and choose one or the other. A tiny omelet for my kid, was $10. The adult one, is 12.50, and significantly BIGGER. I’m SO disappointed in this place. Used to come here along time ago, and I was good! The waitress was NO help and didn’t offer any resolution in fixing it to make us happy customers. The reviews are right, the place is going downhill, and the food was “ok. None of us got full, and the food was cold, for the most part, the cheese in the omelet wasn’t even melted.. and $7 for maybe 6 onions rings. I expected a up charge but not $7 for something we thought came with our meal, the salad was bagged lettuce with ranch thrown on it. Yuck! And was $6.. The food said a different price on the menu then what we were charged, charging a dollar or two extra for each item.. the workers didn’t seem interested at all in reconciling this issue.. will never come here again, and I will definitely be warning others about this place.. crooks I had 3 children and two adults, it was $60. All waters, two breakfast plates, and two sandwich plates, and a child’s lunch plate. We came in around 11:30. The place wasn’t crowded.. we sat in the corner to the left when we walked in.. it doesn’t allow me to reply.
Yesterday I drove 2 hours to visit Stephenville for the first time. I stopped in at this cafe around 4:30 and ordered the chicken fried steak because apparently it’s what they’re known for. It came with breaded steak, something resembling gravy, some salad, and some fries. The steak was completely flavorless, the breading was soggy, and flavorless. The gravy weirdly had no flavor and no smell and almost had a gelatin consistency? Some of the waffle fries were soggy, and some were hard as a rock. I read in the reviews that it comes with mashed potatoes, mine didn’t, unless it was mixed in with the gravy somehow. The salad was alright. That and a can of Dr. Pepper cost me $26.85. Very expensive mistake.
We went to Jake & Dorothy's Cafe today. I was so surprised it was not like I remember it being as a young girl growing up in Dublin. It is So ran down, dirty, and you could spell the old grease out front couldn't get waited on. The help was just talking and not even looking at us. There was only 2 tables of folks when we went in. We finally got up and left. They need to do some cleaning and remodeling for sure.
If you want subpar food this is it. Takes for ever to get your food & they totally mess it up. Don’t make it right either. Use to be good prior covid sure not now.
Went for breakfast. Everything was undercooked, except the eggs which were way overcooked. Asked for crispy hash browns and they tasted like chicken noodle soup somehow. They must have used chicken base in them for some reason. I should have complained, but I waited for the waitress to ask how the food was instead. She never did. Neither did the cashier. Won't be back. If you cant get breakfast right, I don't want to try anything else.
Sadly this restaurant has become a “has been.” I simply do not understand why there are so many positive reviews. Food quality has deteriorated. Service spotty at best. Waitress had an attitude. Building and decor are no longer homey. More like tired and very dated. And to top it off, prices are outrageous given the food quality, service and worn out facilities. It was perhaps good if not great for generations but I personally will no longer return when I am in town visiting longtime friend. Btw, cheeseburger was overcooked and not tasty, onion rings were cold and my friends catfish was very thin, overcooked and not appealing. Total cost was an outrageous $41 with small tip. And catfish was regular order not AYCE.
Wanted this to ba a good hometown diner. Unfortunately, this first thing we saw after getting our tea was a roach crawling on the booth. Women's bathroom also required toilet paper to be disposed in trash instead of flushing. NO THANK YOU!
Waited a few minutes for a table which is fine. But then ordered drinks and food and proceeded to wait for our food for over an hour and a half and still did not receive our food. I had the same empty sweet tea the entire time. Not once was a refill offered. We were waiting for our food for so long that people that arrived later than us were served before us with the same order. Another table that had a gentleman sitting there fell asleep waiting for his coffee and meal. This was our first time going here and will be the absolute last time. Just ridiculous
Got the country fried steak, I've never tasted chicken and gravy that tasted actually like nothing let alone a chewy chicken, would not recommend. Staff are nice though.
Walked in one evening randomly because I have seen all the hype and wanted to try it out . I try dives and locally owned restaurants all over Texas and the US . It was Tuesday so they were running specials on . I ordered the CFS was told fries were my only option as a side since it was Hamburger Day and they weren’t making mashed potatoes. My salad was brown lettuce with tomatoes on it and not what I was looking at in thier pictures online .When my order came out the grease poured off the waffle fries the CFS was thin . The staff was not very welcoming it was a very get what you get type of experience. Cleanliness I will give a 2 on because it’s a typical dirty greasy spoon . All in all the place probably use to be amazing but I fear I arrived about 20 years too late for that experience . For what we spent on 2 meals with no options and bad service . We could have saved and went to a nicer establishment and actually got what we wanted side wise . People still give amazing reviews and it has me baffled on their mind set or lack of experiences and food. This place is horrible ! Give other locally owned places in this town a try and steer clear of this one .
I am writing to express our deep disappointment regarding our 2nd visit today. What should have been a celebratory dinner for my 7 yr old daughter turned into an incredibly uncomfortable situation due to our waitress's lack of boundaries. My daughter has been battling SEVERE health and food anxiety issues for months. Tonight was a massive milestone for her: she chose this place because of the pie pictures. She tried a new food, pushed past her fears, and successfully ate a portion of her meal before deciding to save room for pie. We were thrilled. However, our waitress took it upon herself to shame my daughter multiple times for not finishing her plate, telling her, 'Wow, you hardly ate, that's enough food to feed me, you don't want to take that home? You didn't hardly eat. That's very expensive missy" My daughter said no thank you and that she was saving room for dessert. She left feeling like she had done something wrong. To make matters worse, at checkout, the same waitress mocked her choices and commented on my finances, stating, 'Wow, just Sprite and pie... what a dinner! That's a lot of money for the food left on that plate." A server’s job is to provide good food and a welcoming environment...not to police a child's appetite, mock their dessert, or criticize a customer's spending. Staff must be trained to understand that they have NO idea what medical or sensory battles a guest is facing. Shaming a child over food is completely unacceptable, and we will be taking our business elsewhere until this is addressed.
