What a great little place! We were dubious, when we pulled up. Here was this tiny little diner and the parking lot was packed. But when we got inside we were seated right away at the counter and proceeded to have a great breakfast of omelettes and pancakes. The coffee just kept in coming. Prices were low so we over tipped the waitress. Cash only so hit the ATM before you come.
Love love love this place! Classic diner that hasn't changed since it went from ice cream parlor to diner. Their fresh baked breads are amazing as are the donuts! (Ask for your donut to be griddled) Breakfast and lunch options are all delicious! Don't forget to bring cash.
Food was fantastic!! Server was efficient, neutral on the friendly. Did I mention food was fantastic?!?!
I stopped by for breakfast at 10:30 on a Saturday and there wasn't an empty seat in the restaurant and I didn't want to wait, so I left. I guess that says it all about the place. It's amazing and everyone else knows enough to arrive earlier.
The best glazed donuts you have ever eaten! From scratch breads, desserts, and pastries. Excellent breakfast, wonderful pot pies....great ice cream in the summer. Gathering place for family and friends
What a fun breakfast we had this morning chatting with the folks at Duncan's. Food was hot and tasty, coffee plentiful, and the conversation was great. The donuts are like nothing we had ever had...in the best way!
Had a great breakfast with my BF. Large servings and delicious. The 1 breakfast I got took me 3 meals to finish. Fresh fast & yummy. I recommend stopping by for a great home cooked meal.
Best diner in the area every is made from scratch
Excellent food and would highly recommend.
Our family has been going to Duncan's for years! Good food, great flavor, wonderful staff and fairly priced! We love their homemade baked goods, too! I'm so glad that they are well-established in Brunswick. Almost as good as when I used to go to my Mom's💕☺️
I recently walked into this place and was immediately hit in the face with the smell of freshed baked bread. It was simply amazing. I proceed to sit down at the old fashion counter and was instantly greeted. As I looked around it was obvious to see this was the place locals preferred. I order the omelet which came with home fries and fresh baked slices of bed. Best decision I've made in awhile. As the waitress put in my order I was amazed by the open kitchen and watched the man behind the counter hand make the pot pies for later in the day. As I became hungrier I eventually noticed that there were dozens of freshly made muffins only an arms length away. Tempted to take one, I refrained, and watched the woman to the left make my meal. The whole experience was amazing. The food was great, the people were friendly and you could not beat the price. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I'd absolutely stop here again and recommend it to anyone. Enjoy!
Well I can see the hype. Will try to be there regularly.
Very informal service that gave it a homey type of feel. We sat at the counter and were promptly met with "What can I get you folks to drink". Then we had menu's pointed out to us and the counter girl was off after the soda and coffee we ordered. Sorry, started to get a bit long winded there. Important things, service was adequate, food was decent even if I don't approve of a bag of chips with my sandwich, prices reasonable. I'd go back again.
Great breakfasts! Best in the Capital District. Only time I ever leave a diner with a breakfast doggie bag because portions are so large. Donuts, cinnamon bread, and sticky buns are great take home bakery items!
The absolute best breakfast, hands down!!! Huge portions, especially their omelets. The bread is all homemade and the rye is to die for!!!! Definitely try their homemade donuts and cinnamon rolls too!!!!
I visit this place once a year when going up to Saratoga. The corn beef hash is delicious and the portion is just right. I missed the donuts this time. It's been there since 1939 and we'll worth it if you love old school diners.
Great food. Great atmosphere. Attentive staff that genuinely care about their tables. Just bring cash tho-since cards arent accepted. I love this place. Down-home greasy cooking.
A must stop! Great turkey club and fried chicken. Save room for the strawberry shortcake! Home made ingredients. Nice owners and cute waitresses for you young guys. Enjoy!
Good food. very satisfying, warm & delicious. Good service. Cannot get this old fashion fare anywhere else. Remember coming here with now departed mother & father. Seeing others sharing the history at Duncan's, more than a roadside tavern. Much more.
Points for ambiance. The diner is located far from any traffic intersection and gives the impression you are more in a rural setting. The interiors have that quaint rustic charm and makes you feel you have gone back to the late 1980's-early 1990's. The food menu is simple , what you would ordinarily expect in any diner, but I liked the quality for the price. As a pancake aficionado, I would definitely recommend the pancakes. The batter is perfect(neither too sweet or much salty), the cake exterior just rightly crisp and the inside moist . The cheese mushroom omelette was well presented. One minor criticism I had was that the cheese did not mix finely with the egg yolk.So you might just order a plain omelette instead. Overall,I am happy I accidentally discovered the spot and I will be coming back for more
Came here for breakfast and it was awesome!
We go to this place regularly and there are many reasons we keep coming back. The food is amazing, the breakfast bowls are fantastic, and the portions could feed a small army. For the price you pay it is a great deal.
Very active, long-standing diner with generous servings of a well executed menu and daily specials at reasonable prices. Picnic tables and dairy bar window for quick friendly gatherings. Open kitchen with gregariously staffed stations is a dance performance that rivals the Cheers series. Everybody will know your name. Duncan's Baker supplies the area, one of which are cinnamon buns usually GONE WITH THE WIND. Customers often leave with her delicious selections for home. Orders taken for pick-up from bakery also. Winter hiatus leaves our stomachs growling for their return. Duncan, Duncan, hurry back.
Best breakfast ever !!!! My girl and i enjoyed one of the best breakfasts we've ever had everything is fresh from thier family owned farm just up the road and we were served what would feed a small army for just 20 dollars to add to that a Charming staff we're right on top of everything and a great night with fear what more could you want folks don't miss this one I know we'll be returning.👍🏼
Large portions, good food, friendly staff.
The breakfast here is absolutely amazing. Don't eat here if you are on a diet! The hash browns were the best I have ever had and the omelet was huge and delicious. Even the coffee was great. I would have breakfast here every day if I could, although I wouldn't be able to do anything else except lay on the couch the rest of the day. Very laid back atmosphere. The staff were super friendly and even the other patrons were nice. It is literally a diamond on Hoosick St!!! Can't wait to try other things on the menu. It is a cash only place so make sure to stop at the ATM before you go, and bring lots extra for a tip for the awesome service.
This place is so reliable. Even when other dinners are closed they are eagerly awaiting to serve you. Everything is made to order very quickly, you can get a great view of the cooks working their tails off if you sit at the end of the bar. Get the ice coffee its normally really strong. Watch your step in here its been around a long time and some parts seem to have settle mainly in the customer walk ways around the bar.
The quintessential (warning big word usage) local diner with incredible edibles. The baked on premise breads and rolls are delicious. The pastry sweets are next level and the place is so casual and laid back. It's old school for sure and that gives it a charm you'll feel like it's a throwback to the good old days. The staff has always been so friendly. Be aware it gets busy, I've never really had to wait more than a few minutes, but the rush times definitely fill the place up, prices are really reasonable for the portions and the quality being made on site.
If I could give this place 6 stars I would, hell 100. This is quintessential upstate New York diner food. Duncan's does it like no other. Always a good filling meal and u can't skip the chocolate milk. Brought some friends out of town, one from the UK for breakfast and they went back a second day without us I guess they loved it so much. Always get your home fries well done for a crispy treat.
Very awesome atmosphere. Delicious food. Good looking waitresses! The staff is very friendly and patient and will allow you to just sit and talk while you enjoy your meal and have time with your friends and family! This is something I absolutely look forward to and love as part of a restaurant's atmosphere because the meal isn't always the main event. Sometimes it's the people and it's the moment.
Love this old school vintage diner. With fresh pastries and typical diner fare. Love the vintage interior. The donuts are delish!
Only because there’s no sixth star. Our server was great. She recommended the glazed donut be grilled with butter and powdered sugar. IT WAS AMAZING… ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ My wife’s eggs where cooked perfect and the homemade toast was delicious. I had a breakfast sandwich that was also delicious. Portions were big for the price. Again our server was very attentive and friendly and we look forward to coming back. We love breakfast and this is a one stop shop….. well done Duncan’s!
I have not had a bad experience with the food or service. I feel like I get a home cooked meal every time. The old school look the inside has, for me its awesome, brings me back in time. Love it! I wish it was on the beach because each time I come here I feel like I am eating at a really good seaside restaurant and leave feeling awesome. Don't let the old school decor steer you away, food is awesome!
Great breakfast spot! Friendly service and homey feel. The portions are huge and they get the home fries right, crispy and don't forget to add the onions and peppers. Definitely try the pancakes! The size of a plate and their specialty ones are out of this world! CASH ONLY, but they have an ATM.
Love a Mom and Pop place with real food freshly made when you order it that you can tell was made from scratch and not microwaved when you ordered it. Duncan's is the real deal local place you wish was in your hometown! Enjoyed every bite and bought a loaf of the delicious homemade bread home to b enjoy all week too!
My wife and I absolutely love Duncan's... Breakfast is off the charts, lunch is stupendous, baked goods is unforgettable, and don't forget about the ice cream... Must go... I will say to anyone who reads this - it's cash only so your not caught off guard when you go because I believe you will go and try!
We love this place for breakfast! The staff is nice and great food! We have been back multiple times since this original post and time and time again the foodand staff are just great!
Great little place for breakfast. It's very crowded in the morning hours so waiting for a table is common. Great egg sandwiches and pancakes. Homemade corned beef hash has great flavor. The portions are large and everything tastes fresh. Have had a few misses in regards to service but the food is always good.
White chocolate raspberry pancakes are worth every dime! Awesome bacon egg & cheese!
Delicious diner. We had a fabulous breakfast. Took home leftovers because portions are so big. And even brought home a loaf of fresh bread. Can't be beat. Prices are reasonable, portions are large.
Been eating here for 30 years. Food and staff is great. They make the best huge glazed donuts but you better get there early or they will be gone. You will not be disappointed. I promise.
Spectacular breakfast here as I traveled thru the area. Very nice people working there. Amazing baked goods too!
Best home cooking that you can find. Everything delicious and large portions. I think I saw the largest donut I've ever seen in my life today. I've been around for many, many years. Nice people. Good food. Nice place. Very
If your looking for a place to eat amazing food at a reasonable cost with freshly made bread and English muffins daily then look no more. Seriously folks, this business has been around for awhile now, made the news for recognition - owners are absolutely amazing people - it's worth the experience! Just an fyi - cash only -
My partner brought me here b/c he used to come here as a yout. It's very nostalgic and old timey feel. The server was very kind and attentive. I would come again!
My first time at Duncan's and all I can say is yum, yum, yum! That toasted glazed donut,...to die for! Excellent service even though the place was packed. Will definitely have to visit again!
Classic local spot with that old-school diner charm you don’t find much anymore. The food’s simple, fresh, and always hits the spot — especially the breakfast. Friendly staff, quick service, and a cozy, no-frills atmosphere that feels genuine. A true Troy staple that’s worth stopping by if you want comfort food done right.
This was the best surprise on the way home from VT- local best kept secret. Old fashioned quality home cooked meals at old fashioned prices. Homemade bread, pot pies, cinnamon rolls, whole roasts for generous sandwiches…. All excellent. Get there extra early for the mysteriously disappearing giant donut. 😋 Skip the service area fast food and support a long time local family business. Bring cash 👍🏻
Oh my God this place is amazing I love this diner like I just found out about the standard The food is fantastic it's all homemade it was just fantastic
Great local diner serving up the usual comfort foods for breakfast and lunch. Friendly service, efficient and reasonable.
My girlfriend had been coming here since she was a child and she still loves it today. The food and service were both very good, so I'm inclined to agree. Only caveat I'd like to point out is that they are cash-only. They do have an ATM on site, but of course that has a fee. I can understand the reasons for this, but I just didn't feel like it was adequately conveyed when I entered because it caught me off guard when it came time to pay. Maybe I just don't like surprises 😅
This place is a treasure! The Atmosphere is fantastic. We sat at the counter area and got to see what a great team they have! Very busy on a Rainy day and It was run seamlessly. wonderful staff and delicious food! On top of a full breakfast/ lunch Menu they have Homemade bread, donuts, muffins, cinnamon rolls and much more! Definitely will be making it back soon!
Great folks in here. We were passing through this little town and found this hidden gem. Don't let the outside fool you. The food is fantastic and the staff was even better! We had the home made turkey pot pies. They're definitely worth the 8.50. Cash only but they have an ATM on site and parking big enough for a semi truck to get in.
Local staple. Cash only. If you want donuts you need to get there early. They sell out quickly. Portions are large. It’s not on the menu but you can order your hash browns deep fried. Great crispy hack. Otherwise they will be pan fried. Weekends are always busy but don’t have to wait that long for a table generally.
Quaint, old fashioned diner type establishment. Uneven floors and 50s countertops add to the charm. Food was excellent and the portions were astronomical! We could have split one meal! My sweetie eyeballed the plate-sized donuts and had to get one of those as well. Dunkin's was recommended to us by the folks at Brunswick Harley-Davidson as we were passing through from Milwaukee to Boston. We were grateful for the recommendation. Put Duncan's on your list for sure!
Decent food and attractive and pleasant waitresses. They only lose one star with me because their bacon is always served on the chewy side even when you ask for it deep fried and you need to ask for your home fries well done or deep fried or you may get undercooked potatoes.
Food was good and the portions were big. Most of the wait staff was friendly. Only reason I didnt give 5 stars was due to one of the younger waitresses. She looked like she was hating being there and was very rude and unfriendly. Other than her awful attitude everything else was good.
This place has delicious, homemade food. The employees are friendly too. Some of them have become friends with my family over the years. I like that it's smaller & more cozy feeling. The only downside is they have this one cook, a younger guy, who I've seen on numerous occasions wipe his nose on the back of his hand then go back to cooking. Yuck. He wasn't always there while I was growing up so he somewhat hurts the business, in my opinion. Otherwise, I love this place.
Homemade dinners and desserts are excellent and plentiful.
Cash only! Great comfort food! Corned beef hash is amazingly good. Homemade pies for take out are tasty too! Table service available, but you have to join the counter community! One of a kind place.
Breakfast is okay. Needs more selection on menu
Food and service very good ss always.
Stopped here for lunch while on vacation. This place is like stepping back in the 80s. They do have in house baked bread that was really good. I thought the price was a little high for the church dinner like atmosphere.🤷
Excellent prices. Had a cheeseburger on rye with chips for $4. It also came with slaw and a pickle. Was tasty. I also got a piece of cherry pie to go. Quick and friendly counter service. Cash only. I did not try the dairy bar ice cream so can't comment on that. I wanted to get bread pudding but they were out.
I stopped for a donut and was told they were out. I got a toasted cinnamon bun instead. It was ok. The decaf coffee was good. For my breakfast.
I always support small businesses when I can I'm glad I stopped in food was good large portion. Staff was nice . Place could use some updates. Thank you.
The egg sandwiches were just ok and the service was pretty slow. It was a weekend so we were not expecting a quick in and out, however, we probably waited about 20 minutes for a simple egg sandwich. We will definitely try Duncan's again, but we will be eating in and not taking out.
The server was one of the best I've ever experienced. She was absolutely perfect but the food on the other hand.. my scrambled eggs were extremely runny , very liquidity, An just my opinion the homefries were mushed potatoes hardly cooked. The English muffin was properly toasted other then that. .idk to spend those prices on brkfast I'd like the have my food cooked all the way at least. I didnt complain cuz the server was fantastic and I didn't want to cause her to have a bad day over the kitchens mistake. Spent 50 bucks an left still hungry. Ill let u take it for what it's worth.
I need to be fair and not give a negative review. I had French toast, I prefer mine not as moist inside as I had. When we go back, I will order it well done. My husband had eggs and pancakes, he enjoyed his very much.
It is a very good place to eat. I have not had a bad meal there yet. The glazed doughnuts are the bomb so big. The omelettes are crazy and full of flavor. They bake pastries and doughnuts daily so get there early or you miss out. The only problem I have is it’s kinda dirty inside sticky floors and counter. The cook area is open and gross looking. I don’t mind being able to see food being made but when the floor is greasy and food all over its off putting. Also if you sit at the bar by the bathrooms, you have open bread and pastries right over the counter uncovered. If someone coughs and doesn’t cover their mouth it’s on the food 100%
Do not go on a Sunday. Duncan's is a perfectly nice diner, but it is not worth the hour and 15 minutes it took for my tuna sandwich to arrive. It's preposterously busy and the kitchen doesn't seem to be able to handle it.
Food is normally good, just don’t call to tell them you found burnt plastic in your homefries. The customer service makes the atmosphere feel uncomfortable if you’re not a regular. I have stopped going in and started ordering online for pick up due to the uncomfortableness from staff and cooks.
3 friends and I met here for breakfast this past Sunday. It was very crowded and busy, which is normal for a Sunday breakfast. The parking lot was inpossible, almost nowhere to park, which i thought would be a good sign.. We ordered fairly quickly and enjoyed our time catching up...until the time kept passing with no food in sight. All told, it took almost an hour to get served. When the items did arrive, it was pretty disappointing. Eggs were scrambled but had zero flavor, toast was overcooked, and the corned beef hash I had requested well done looked like it had been briefly left to cook a few seconds longer on one side, so that most of it was still mushy. Pancake was fine, but nothing special. Although it had taken an hour to get our food, the check arrived within 10 minutes. We went from having no one checking in for an hour to 5 different staff members stopping by one right after another "to see if we needed anything" (more likely to free up a table). Finally, the handwritten check was very difficult to figure out and nothing seemed to add up right. At this point we were ready to go, so we paid and left. Overall, a disappointing experience and not one I would recommend to others.
Used to be one of the best breakfast spots in Troy, but since their long-time (great) cook left recently, quality and consistency have sadly suffered. Take for example the blueberry pancakes. It’s like a “where’s Waldo” contest to find any actual blueberries in the batter (see picture) despite the added cost. Complete lack of handicapped parking, despite high % of disabled and/or older veteran patrons, is another disappointment. Try walking from any random parking space to the front door without tripping and breaking your leg, and you’ll feel like you deserve a prize. Servers are all hard-working and polite.
This is a spot that is a tradition with locals, but that doesn't mean it's good. Food is mediocre to bad. Bake goods are also a draw but I have not eaten anything other than their bread as burned toast. I'm all for if it ain't broke don't fix it, but this place needs an overhaul.
We waited a bit for anyone to come to our table. Only saw the one waitress. As for the food... I was upset. I asked for a cinnamon roll. What I got was like bread with cinnamon in it and it was very dry. My home fries were bland no flavor what so ever. Then I couldn't eat most as they were burnt and hard as a rock. I can honestly say the place has gone downhill throughout the years we've been going there. Such a shame too. Definitely won't return for breakfast anytime soon.
BEST omelette of my life! Great food but that’s it. The lack of service due to all of the servers being lost in personal conversations was frustrating. Also, the lack of concern shown by servers touching food with their bare hands was a bit appalling. I witnessed, several times, servers taking cash and going straight back to grabbing food, literally. Maybe some additional Food Handlers Certifications are needed or need refreshing.
I have been dying to try the cinnamon bun that everybody raves about. I ordered one to go. It was so stale through at least half of it that I couldn’t even cut it with a knife. It also wasn’t sweet and there was barely any icing. What a total disappointment. My omelette of Swiss and mushroom was also not as good as I have had in the past. Maybe Saturday is a bad day to go near there.
Only rating service 1 star because 2 people came in after me and got served before me. Felt invisible! Food came out quick though and was very good! I recommend the huge doughnut!!
Review as a delivery driver. Staff seems nice to some people but service is slow and they mark their deliveries as ready to pick up well before they are. Expect to wait 10+ minutes. And late ratings. It doesn't seem equipped to handle delivery on top of in house service Edit in response: I do understand a lot of what you said and honestly I do hope the best for you and your business going forward. Especially if this isn't the regular. If I ever deliver there again and have a better experience I will reflect it in an updated review. If you really want clarification to some of the comments, I felt tones of annoyance and confusion for asking for orders. And had multiple looks thrown my way for waiting around. Along with seeing and hearing some people who were ignored by staff and then staff being chatty and friendly to other guest. I get that could just be due to a busy atmosphere but It really came off as regulars are treated well, everyone else not so much. On the last order I picked up from there when I was offered coffee it was after I had been there for 10 minutes. Before arriving I had to drive over 20 minutes to get there and to arrive after the order was Marked ready to pick up and then having to wait another 15/20 minutes made it seemed orders aren't started until drivers arrive. Which looks bad on us, for example, I had to fight with customer service on my end to get a late rating removed from this which enough of those can lead to many bad things on our end. I make reviews like this in hope business will adjust behavior that effect drivers who already have little to no protection. From delivery services we're looked at as expendable and we're looked at as even less and even as a burden from many restaurants, stores and their employees. Again I do wish you the best and I hope this is the regular experience other drivers experience.
The service was awful. Never came back to check or offer refills. Forgot to bring some of the food that went with the meal. In fact never saw our server again. There was 3 of us and two meals were cold. I asked for mayonaisse on the side and was it was hot and discolored. Tried to pay with Debit card and was told then that they do not accept cards. But lucky for me (being sarcastic) they have an ATM. So that cost me even more. Asked why they do not post a sign on the front door, the girl said its on the back of our shirts. Well, when someone takes my order they are facing me so I can't see the back of their shirt. The only reason I gave them a star is because the sweet potato fries were decent. We will not be returning.
Absolutely unreal. Got seated with dirty sticky menus, asked about their soup of the day and the waitress told me they don’t have soup and about 10 minutes later the waitress took the order of the table next to us and they proceeded to order soup. And then they brought soup out to them. Wait staff brought out burnt terrible food and never came back to check on my table to see if we needed a refill or anything. When the waitress finally came over she just handed us the bill. 0/10 would not recommend.
I do not understand the positive reviews. Nothing we ordered for breakfast today was good, the omelette was browned outside and the cheese was cold inside, the potatoes, which we requested well done, were a soggy, greasy mess, the pancakes were thick and doughy, the bacon was thin, salty and tasteless. Also, the WORST coffee I've ever tasted, like battery acid.
Haven't been here in years...we got a Reuben sandwich on rye...we were watching the humongous sandwiches..pancakes8..desserts coming out looking deelish...this overtoasted..dry...small sandwich came out with a tiny Cole slaw and small bag of chips...the soup came later cuz it was forgotten and of course it was cold so we didn't eat it. What a huge disappointment...we will continue to drive by the place...the other customers food looked delicious and large amounts..we were in shock...they took the soup off our bill. Thank you...
Will never go back. Counter was dirty all the way down when we sat down. Waiter half-wiped a spot where we sat down, then plopped napkins and silverware on the soaking wet counter. My husband immediately picked them up and wiped the counter again himself. Eggs were cooked incorrectly and didn’t taste good at all. My husband ordered sausage with his meal and wouldn’t even eat it, it tasted so off. “Home fries” were big lumps of potatoes, 2/3s of the whole meal, and didn’t look at all like I expected. Waiter walked by us 4-5 times without asking how we were or anything, until I finally said “excuse me” and made him stop… and it was not overly busy. We’ve learned our lesson and will not come here again.
