Looking for real world food ? Set your GPS for Famous Lunch in Troy. It's not fancy. Real people sit at the counter on stools and family gathers in the booths. The place is clean but the atmosphere is historic. The walls are metal, the booths are wood, and the stools spin. The background is stainless and the floor tiles are detailed. They have excellent food. Obviously the hot dogs are great but I liked the Western omlette with cheese. The rest of my family had hot dogs. For five bucks that was a quality sandwich that was loaded. The 4 dogs and a drink special for eight bucks hit the spot for the rest. So....nostogia, good food, and fair prices....I call.Famous Lunch a winner !

Update – 7/24/25: Went back with my family today, and it’s not often I can say that expectations were exceeded the second time around. The guy taking orders memorizes everything and relays it to the kitchen flawlessly. Everyone there—staff and patrons alike—is genuinely friendly. We had three kids with us (not exactly the quietest crew), and no one batted an eye. It’s truly a family joint, and I’m grateful to experience a slice of the Troy my grandmother was born and raised in. The food is amazing—especially the dogs and fries. The hot dogs are just right, and the French fries are hand-cut, served piping hot, and perfectly crisp. To top it all off, everything is affordable, which makes it even easier to come back again and again. Original review: Really really enjoyed this place excellent food and service! Adding it as one of our staple stops when we’re in the area.

The best mini hot dogs in the area, The zippy sauce does it all. They do have other lunch items but the minis is what I go here for, me personally I think it’s better than the other Hot Dog place in the other side of the River. It can get a little crowded if you’re looking to dine in but the little shelf outside is the best spot

Totally retro and totally wonderful. This takes me back to the diners of my youth. We came for breakfast and there was the usual selection of eggs, omelettes, pancakes, etc. Everything is cooked on the grill right behind the counter. It’s not fancy by any means your coffee is brought to you by the cup and refills have to be done behind the counter. Even the restaurant equipment is really retro with a milk machine with the lift up handles and a cream dispenser that I haven’t seen in many years. The omelette came with toast and home fries. There is a hotdog omelette on the menu and you would expect nothing less. Companion had a cheese omelette and I had a vegetable and cheese omelette. The vegetables included tomatoes, peppers, and onions sautéed on the grill. The elements were delicious, although greasier than I would like not unexpectedly. You can have any kind of toast you want as long as it is white this is obviously a small family owned business, which makes it even nicer. They appreciated that I came up to the counter rather than having to bring things to me given how busy it was. Each of us of course got rice pudding to go for later. Step back in the past and enjoy this wonderful place. CASH ONLY!

Best little hot dog place around. Been going every chance I get for 40+ yrs. It was a tradition that started with my parents that I carried on with my kids. I love that the place has never changed in all those years and brings back memories. Standing outside watching the hotdogs turn. Always bring 2 dzn dogs and extra sauce home.

Not just a greasy spoon. It’s not just an aesthetic. This place is the real deal. Why have one got dog when you can have two, why have two hot dogs when you can have four covered in meat sauce and mustard. The little dogs are so cute and satisfying to eat. But don’t miss the burger. It doesn’t look like much but it’s truly special. The fries are also perfect. Wish I could be a regular here

Pretty good reasonably price little dig in Troy, NY. We stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon while heading home from further upstate. We ordered three hotdogs one “all the way” which includes onions and meat sauce, a chicken sandwich, two large fries, and two Italian sausage sandwiches. Food was cooked fresh and was well tasting. Reasonable cost and the place has a neat back story involving a marine and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, so stop by a take a read. Attaching an updated menu with correct pricing and a few other pics.

Very cool to experience an old school hot dog shop. Hotdogs are pretty small, but not bad for the price to sit down at the diner style eatery while learning about its history. overall, a great experience and good bang for your buck! I recommend stopping by at least once to check it out.

Since 1932 this place has been around. Hasn't been cleaned since the 70's but the mini hot dogs with mustard, raw onion and their meat sauce is a solid 5 stars and worth braving the location. Good fries though a bit greasy for my taste. Counter service and some booths and a working old school telephone booth. Fast service even when busy for lunch. Even though the dogs were GREAT, you can't call everything a 5 star experience and have it mean something so these guys are a 4.5! Go enjoy the dogs today!

The food is subpar. It would definitely be a lot better if they would season their food even a little bit. Fries are very bland and soft theres hardly ever a crunch to them. Their sausage and peppers are decent but still could use seasoning, their meat sauce is not for me just not a fan of the taste. I will say their pancakes and French toast are good though. Home fries are bland though. I'm not knocking the place just trying to figure out why it's so popular

The food is average but the price is fantastic. I tried the mini hotdogs with the works. They were more like a chili dog than upstate NY meat sauce hot dog. The burger and fries were good. The rice pudding was homemade so, better than the store bought but not quite as good as Grandma's recipe. It's nice to see a little mom and pop place like this is still open. You can fill up without shelling out a lot of money.
