I’ve been eating food from here for a long time, though it’s been a little while since I’ve had pizza specifically. We got a pizza, antipasto, and Italian sub this visit. Everything was the same quality I remember. The sauce is a little on the thinner side but still good and flavorful. The sub was pretty generous and they packed a lot of cold cuts on the antipasto. We ordered takeout, it was ready shortly after I arrived and it was pretty busy. Shout out to the young man helping behind the counter (I’m assuming next generation of the family)

Where else can ya get the best tomato pie in the area? HERE. The riggies are pretty good also. The girl making the pizza was great conversation for the time also. I do go back every so often and the food and people never disappoint

I come from Syracuse and stop whenever I visit the Mohawk Valley, always dine in as the pizza is best right out of the oven.

Was up in that area a few days ago giving a friend a ride. As I was waiting for a bit I walked over to the Pizzeria just to use the bathroom. As I was walking out the aroma of the store was very appealing. I walk out anyways, then I say eh actually I’ll try a slice. Will say I’m very happy I went back in. The pizza I got was delicious, idk how they do the cheese on there but it was fantastic. The service was amazing as well, the young woman that was a cashier was very friendly and polite, the chef I am very grateful for, very kind man and finally the owner! As I was waiting I was speaking with a woman and she said they’ve been in business for a while and I can see why, fantastic service great pizza, as a fellow Italian, I approve. 🫡😀

I grew up eating here. To me there was no other pizza Having eaten at the old location where the firehouse is now. And I've had pizza in Rome Italy that to me didn't come close to my OScuggnizzo

The pizza, fries, and garlic bread were all delicious. The staff was very friendly and the overall feel was very comfortable with everyone in a good mood. On top of all that the prices were good as you get alot of food for your money, I'll have leftovers for a while. Thanks again!

You absolutely will NOT go wrong with this place!!!! I've been craving it since I moved years and years ago!!! Tastes just as good as it did the first time I had it as a child. Do yourself a service and come try them out! It's definitely worth the price.

We decided to swing by Oscugnizzo’s this morning after a trip to Roma’s on Bleeker and ordered a # 10 sausage, peppers, and mushrooms. Raced home could smell the awesomeness the whole ride home and had lunch. They are a great bunch of guys working there , pizza was perfect as always their sauce is amazing. I have never had a problem there , and I keep going back .

This pizza shop is a must-visit for pizza lovers. It offers a unique and delicious pizza experience, with friendly staff that adds to the overall charm. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the second oldest pizza shop in the United States, making it a true culinary landmark. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this pizza shop is definitely worth the drive to upstate New York.

Among the best pizza I’ve ever tried. If I’m within an hour of Utica, I’m going out of my way to get this pie.

F

If you are looking for NY Style (cardboard crust with canned sauce) pizza in a quiet restaurant atmosphere - what are you doing in my favorite pizzeria? If you are at the counter you are a few feet away from the ovens and constantly busy cooks. You are in most basic East Utica not a Bistro in upper Manhattan! You can trust Dave Partnoy’s review of the pie, that’s what I always come here for when back in town. Try it with just sausage, it is spread on the bottom ( hence “upside down”.”

G
Gabrielle Mauldin

It’s truly an experience trying this upside down pizza with the sauce on top. Flavor of the sauce can’t be beat!

M
Mike Wagner

You just don't make it as a restaurant for 111 years unless you are doing something right. I watched the cook make pies, take phone orders and take payments all at the same time! Thats an accomplishmenton its own. The crazy good sauce, super tasty cheese and crunchy pan like crust on their pizza is truly perfection. My life won't be complete until I try everything on the menu.

S
Sean Wlock

The fish fry dinner comes with a large fresh piece of fish, fries, mac salad, coleslaw, and a fresh dinner bun. It’s absolutely delicious and you can’t beat the price.

My favorite pizza place anywhere, plus they still offer longhots on a pizza which is starting to get hard to find.

I've come here for 40 years. Always consistent and unique taste. Our work had cheese pizza and sausage pizza today. It was loaded with cheese, sauce, flavor. It was excellent. Thank you for your consistency in a top quality pizza. Ill never go anyplace else.

P
Paul Zutter

We ordered a take out pizza that was excellent. The pie is a local speciality where the sausage goes on the pizza dough first, then the cheese and the sauce is on top. It's a different and enjoyable change to an old favorite! We recommend you give it a try.

B

Great za - couldn't wait to take the picture had to smash some pieces first! Picked this up on my drive from Boston to Cleveland after reading great reviews online. Love the crust and sauce on top - a truly unique pizza from a great spot.

First time here as I'm from over an hour away but I was in the area and the girlfriend raved about them. We ordered the upside-down pie with pepperoni. Also got the fried cauliflower. Everything was delicious! Service was great and very friendly. And even 2 days later the pie warmed up nicely in the oven. Great place to get some pizza. Will definitely be getting more food from O'Scugnizzo next time I'm in the area.

J

S

Visited a friend and was told the pizza was great here. IT IS! I've never had pizza with the sauce on top of the cheese, it's messy but I definitely recommend! Very nice counter service also.

C

The OG pizza spot. My introduction to tomato pie since I was a child. This place has been a staple for Utica and I have always been a huge fan. It's consistent, which is genuinely so hard to find. The chicken riggies are phenomenal and this is my go to spot every time I come back to visit Utica. 10/10 phenomenal pizza and great service.

B

Everything was amazing, especially the food. The pizzas were so delicious. No wonder this pizzeria in at the TOP, only in Utica!

J
Joseph Guarno

The first and greatest "upside down" pizza in the business. Dough, sausage, cheese then sauce. Not sauce on the bottom.

R
Rob Oatman

This was my first experience with an "upside-down" pie, and I loved it. The crust was dense; somehow chewy and crispy at the same time. You couldn't see the pepperoni, but you could surely taste its flavor. When the pie is served, it appears to be uncut. But it's actually sliced perfectly, so it's super easy to grab a piece without everything sliding off. The sauce, sprinkled with grated cheese, is flavorful. And you should try the finely ground hot pepper flakes. ... The building seems a little sketchy, but who cares? It's downtown Utica. Wasn't expecting a palace. The two men behind the counter were efficient, if not exactly warm and cuddly. The pricing is a shade high, but not worthy of a legitimate complaint. The pizzeria has been operating for more than 100 years, so it's pretty obvious that the folks behind the business know what they're doing. Nothing fancy going on, other than flavor.

L
Luis Rios Jr.

A must stop when visiting! I grew up eating this pizza and my first stop every time I go home. The pizza and wings are the best in town.

S
Savannah Kieper

Pizza was delicious! Normally don’t care for sheet pizza because it’s too doughy, but this was not like that at all! Sauce had great flavor!

J
Josh Little

Wanted some pizza, and when I found out this was one of the best in the country I had to try it. It did not disappoint. I can see why they have been around and family run for 108 years. I have never had upside down pizza, so I didn't know what it was. It's basically just sauce on the top. It's definitely a must try. They also make their own sausage, and it is delicious. If you are in the area, you owe it to yourself to try this place out.

R
Ryan Mazierski

O'Scugnizzo's offers a pizza like no other. The pizza sauce is on top of the pizza and with cheese and other toppings underneath. Some call it upside down pizza, it should just be called "Great!" There is a reason this place has been open for over 100 years and is the second oldest pizzeria in the US. The chicken riggies are also another unique Utica regional food which is a must try. Restaurant service was very good and staff was friendly. Make sure to see the photos of the original owner of the restaurant from 1914. This place a must stop if you are visiting Utica.

J
Jon Allen

O'Scugnizzo's has been a favorite of our family for decades. Stopped in to get bake-at-home pizzas for football Sunday. The chef cut our pizzas to fit in a cooler for the ride. Followed the directions and they came out perfect. Can't say enough about this Utica icon. Fantastic.

S

A coworker of mine who is from the area, told us definitely try O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria. Upon arriving before a concert,we stopped by for a bite. We enjoy trying local fare when traveling. Ordered a small pepperoni pizza -wow still made like the original owner. We enjoyed dining in, experiencing a part of Americana.

The best pizza I have ever had!! Unique upside down pizza 🍕!! Friendly staff too!! Love getting food from them!!

T
Tommy Propane

The best pizza in upstate NY for sure. The unique style of cooking the pizza is a game changer. You have the dough and mozzarella with no sauce, baked until crust is crispy on the bottom, pulled from the oven. Then fresh sauce, warmed on the stove, is ladled on top. Sprinkle on some parmesan cheese and boom... magnificent. Sauce can get dried out and pasty while baking. That doesn't happen when cooked this way. Along with a change in texture, somehow, the flavor profile is enhanced. We make pizza at home sometimes, and when we do, we apply this approach and are much happier for it.

J
Jeremy Murphy

Probably the best pizza in upstate NY. You like a good traditional upside down then this is your place. Very good prices with a good atmosphere and people. Must stop if your passing through.

Been coming here for over 30 years and am impressed that the style of pie and friendly service has not changed. Clean, spacious, family-style space if you’re eating in, spotless bathrooms, and friendly, humorous banter at the front counter, which is something I’m happy to say never changes at the historic spots in Utica. I think the manager, “Red” and his coworker Tommy both deserve a raise for providing such quality customer service! Do yourself a favor…get your pie extra crispy!

My mother has been talking about the tomato pie from O’Scugnizzo’s for at least the last 30 years. My grandfather owned a children’s shoe shop and lived in new Hartford. This was one of the very few highlights in her early culinary experiences. And it delivered. Super nice people behind the counter as well. It’s just off the Thruway. Easy to get to plenty of parking do yourself a favor and skip the awful throughway food.

This was a local recommendation & experience to have! I got to have a small pizza pie with pepperoni which was delicious! I’ve never experienced a tomato based pie but I’m glad I did. The inside was a very classic look and you can tell that everyone has either known each other for the longest time and really loves the place.

This restaurant has been around since 1914, and you can really feel the history when you walk in. The atmosphere is amazing, with old photos and images on the walls that give the place a unique character. We tried their special pizza made with mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, tomato, onion, and garlic, and added anchovies on half — it was really nice. The pizza itself is very unique, especially the sauce. It has a slightly runny texture and a rich, tasty flavor. It feels like they add it at the later stage of baking, maybe after the pizza is half or three-quarters baked, which gives it a totally distinctive taste. The dough was also amazing, different from any I have had before. Both I and my son noticed right away that it was unique and delicious pizza different from any other pizza we have tried. If you are passing through town, you definitely have to try it.

If you’re in town, this is a must-visit — not just for the history (second oldest pizzeria in the nation!) but for the food itself. Their signature tray-style pizza is unlike anything else: a perfect, airy-yet-crispy crust topped with rich tomato sauce and a generous sprinkle of cheese. You can taste the tradition in every bite. Service was warm and welcoming, and family run and the old-school atmosphere makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time in the best way possible. The kind of place where you just know locals have been coming for generations. Can’t wait to come back for another tray! 🍕

Wow, their upside down pizza is seriously good. Locals know this, but I’m no local. Still, so glad I ordered a pie for pickup, no issues when I arrived and I was in pizza heaven a minute later. Don’t hesitate

Tori Bright

Excellent pizza — decent prices for how high quality the pizzas are. If you’re looking for New York style pizza, this isn’t it. However, these pizzas were delicious and seemed quite gourmet. We got the pepperoni and the garlic/mozzarella. For two smalls that were actually quite large, we paid $22.78 after tax.

We stopped in for lunch and we were not disappointed! The pizza was great, it was our first time having it but it won't be our last.

Kyle Wilson

We just moved to Utica, and our first dinner in town was an authentic pizza joint. Its been here since 1914! Everything was delicious and you could tell that love and care were put into each dish. The Italian dressing was clearly handmade and pepperoni on the pizza seemed to be made in house and hand cut! They told us we have to come back on Tuesdays for the Chicken Riggies, which is Chicken Riggatoni paired with spicy peppers in a red and white sauce. It is a Utica special! Will definetly be coming back for more pizza while we live here!

Ed Holden

Another customer tried to warn me as I walked in that the pizza here isn't what you expect pizza to be. He must have noticed I'm from out of town, but it happens I know this place and love the pies just as they are. Yes, they're upside down: medium-thickness crust topped with a layer of cheese, with sauce spread evenly on top. It's not a gimmick: they've been making it this way for 108 years. Maybe it's not for everyone but I think if you keep an open mind you'll enjoy it. My pie was the best pizza I had in a long time. But keep in mind the format is a little messy and it's wise to arm yourself with napkins. In another context the crust would be mediocre but it works here.

Andrew Witherell

Fantastic pizza here. Unlike anything I have ever had before. Tried the mozzarella pizza and mozzarella, sausage, and pepperoni. I didn't realize the sausage eas spread on the entire crust and nut just crumbled. I was very satisfied with the quick and friendly service and the food.

Okay, the pizza may have not been a five in my books but the experience was definitely worth it. The great-great-granddaughter was there and she gave me a very much history of this icon driving from Toronto driving by. I had to go try it. Lots of history. Second oldest pizzeria in the US of a very, very interesting articles. Artifacts and the whole story how they started. Thanks again. I didn't catch your name. Great experience

When I'm away from home I like to try local nonchain restaurants. O'Scunizzo is just that and it was wonderful. The founder's great granddaughter waited on us and she is super nice. The sausage pizza was great. Very crisp crust and homemade excellent sausage. I would be there often if I lived near by.

Aaron Adkins
Aaron Adkins

In my opinion, this place has the best pizza in Central New York, uncontested. I drive from Syracuse regularly just to pick it up. Crispy, buttery dough. Thick, luxurious cheese that chars perfectly around the crust. Savory, chunky sauce. I recommend the #9 pie.

j
jaime hollenbeck

We love the pizza here! Every time we visit home, we always stop by and eat here. Looks like a little hole in the wall, but it's so damn tasty. Not sure how they make an "upside-down " pizza taste so good. Always busy when we stop in, so you know it's good

C
Cecily Bowman

Great pizza but prices are a little steep

B
Brandon Palmer

Everyone around here knows their is an upside down pizza battle. This is the original and I love it, however 4.5 for me. Their is another spot I prefer a hair bit better, and usually better service as well. Having said that, this is still excellent

D

Good pizza! Cant sat this would take care of a pizza craving but it was still pretty tasty!

P

The pizza was good. The employees were helpful.

J
Joe Laskowski

Used to get take out from here when I lived behind it. Like then the food was good. The only problem was my daughter didn't like how greasy the chicken riggies were and her's had a big soft clump in it that she couldn't recognize. I believe it was a clump of grated cheese. The wait staff was friendly and I'm sad that I couldn't tip her with my card.

K
Katrina McMullen

The food was good but the tables were dirty and there was a distinct lack of pride in a establishment that has been around since 1914.

T
Tyler Pierce

On our way to the Adirondacks and had to stop here to experience this pie! Super exciting that this place is the 2nd oldest pizzeria in the country, but unfortunately the pizza was just not great. Reminded me of really good high school cafeteria pizza. Not really what we expected.

P
Paige

Classic staple in Utica, I've loved their pizza since I was a kid. Used to be you couldn't find a better or even comparable upside down pizza. But lately, it seems like they might be holding on just because they're a local staple.. The last time I got pizza here the sauce tasted...old..? Ingredients just don't seem as fresh maybe. Which was unfortunate because it would've been great otherwise. The actual construction of it was perfect. Hope to see them make a full comeback.

S
Sheilamae Reyes Ablay

2/10 of the children said the pizza was better than their school's pizza on Fridays (they go to different schools). One said it was slightly better than their mom's homemade pizza(...). İt was a thumbs down from the rest. I'm adding an extra star for being open on Sundays (our fave pizza place isn't) and having the order ready right on time.

J
Johnny LeHane

Unique and decent, but didn't blow us away. Have to congratulate them for their longevity.

R
Ron Farr

Vey disappointing pizza after we heard much about it. Really not your typical pizza. It's a very unique style of pizza overpowered by lots and lots of tomato sauce. Wings were also drowned in BBQ sauce. Some people might like it but don't go there thinking you're getting "Italian" pizza. The place is vintage looking which makes it cool!

J
Joe L

Ordered a small cheese pizza to go. Good tasting sauce but man the crust is a chewer. My temples hurt after eating this pizza. Overcooked or the dough is proofed wrong. Customer service.......well it’s Utica. One thing is no slices here... Boooo

C
Christopher Graham

Was ok overall. Crust was crispy and got great taste, sauce ok at best, and the cheese underneath not as melted as I was hoping for. History of the business and establishment worth the visit, if near bye....

P
Purpletravelgrrl

Was super disappointed in this place. I saw several recommendations for it and had high expectations for the pizza. The dough was very dense and seemed under cooked. It might be normal for the upside down pizza style but was not to our taste. The meatball sub was not good. The meatballs were over cooked, like burned on bottom of the pot and not flavorful. The onion rings and mushrooms were ok. Ultimately it was very expensive and not enjoyable.

M
Mario M

Stopped in because we heard great things about this place. We ordered a small cheese pizza and Italian mix sub. The pizza was different, cheese on the bottom. Made for an interesting adjustment eating it without wearing the sauce. I'm typically used to NY style slice that's very easy to hold and fold as you eat. The taste overall of the pizza was good, very tasty sauce. The crust was bread like and stiff. Overall it was a nice change of pace and well worth the price paid. The sub was ok, I prefer a wider selection of meats with an Italian mix and crustier bread. Service was awesome and the prices are good. They offer a clean dining hall and takeout. Some off street parking. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

F
Filac

One of the worst Pizzas I had ever eaten in my whole entire life. I would have easily preferred Little Caesars over this pizza chain. Their subs and pasta were good though.

S
Stacey DeLoach (Ms. DJ)

This is hard for me to write because I am a die hard O'Ski's patron. I grew up eating here and as an adult this would be my 1st stop as soon as I got off the thruway when I came back home for a visit. I'm not sure what happened there but that was not the O'Scugnizzo's #7, sausage and mushroom, I grew up eating. The sausage and sauce were bland, it was runny, and it looked thrown together. That was the absolute worst pizza I have ever had from O'Ski's in the 50 years I've been patronizing this East Utica landmark. The wings were ok. The quality has gone down. I hope they right this ship.

M
Mitch Kelley

Not really sure what it was I ate. Upside-down pizza I guess. The taste was mediocre, the price was exorbitant, and the bathrooms were dirty. All in all for my first stop in Utica, I should have stopped at Denny's.

Big Dee

First off...the staff was NOT friendly! We ordered a 3 topping large pizza and 20 wings. The pizza was made incorrectly, so they remade it. When we finally got our food after 30 minutes...the pizza was overcooked (burnt on the outside crust)...but was otherwise edible. Not bad, but still overcooked by about 5 minutes! SCORE...C/C-. The wings were, by far, the worst part of the meal! They were WAY overcooked!!! The "fatter" of the wings we could eat, but most of them we threw in the garbage!! We certainly did NOT order them crispy!! The photo doesn't really show just how overcooked (aka burnt) these wings were!! SCORE...D/D-. The owner wasn't even apologetic about it!! Obviously he doesn't care...like most business owners!! Yet they keep raising their prices anyway! $65!!! 😡😡😡. Terrible meal!! I'll stick to Joe's Pizza and Trio's Pizza for much better "upside down" pizza!!

It burns me I can’t leave 0 stars. Ordered a pizza, a regular cheese pizza. Tell me how when I get there I’m greeted by a rude lady who looks like she hates her life, they still make me wait longer even though I ordered before hand, and don’t even get me started on how you can mess up the pizza, it was 21.50 (not including drinks) and they gave me the smallest box they had and it was a square pizza with more tomato paste than anything else garnished with Parmesan cheese. What a sick joke. If yall hate your lives close your shop.

Pre-ordered from here through GrubHub. Order was confirmed and picked up. I received a picture of the "drop-off" from the delivery driver, it was a moving picture while the car was clearly traveling. I tried to call the driver because I figured it was just an accidental mark as delivered, but the number was not in service. Tried to reorder through the GrubHub app (the only way to order online from this pizza spot) and it was cancelled immediately. Bummer as I am not from this area and this was supposed to be a good spot. Try somewhere else that treats clients a bit better y'all, good luck.

Such a joke! Went there after reviews of the great story, 100 years open etc. Family business. They couldn’t be more rude! On my way there for my birthday to get pizza. Spoke to someone to confirm they would still be open. He confirmed. Joke on me. They closed a hour early. Guy i originally spoke to left early and guy who answered when i called back was one of the rudest humans i have spoke to. If the owner reads this / go see who closed your “family business” 4/8/24. Maybe change your hours or get new employees. Also Barstool - you may want to think twice of the kind of businesses you tell people to frequent.

Honestly really disappointed. Heard a lot of good reviews from this place so decided to try it out while I was in Utica. Not nearly enough cheese to be considered a pizza. I feel like I’m just eating sauce. Would’ve been fine if it wasn’t extremely cold by the time I got home which was literally a 10 minute drive. I mean I’ve had pizza from dominos delivered 20 minutes away and it was still hot

Tommy was extremely rude and unprofessional. Tommy then slammed my money on the counter and continued to shout at me. The food has been getting worse and worse throughout these past few months. Today I received my pizza and wings the pizza was soggy and my wings had feathers. This is absolutely disgusting and disgraceful.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I’ll NEVER GO BACK. I brought my wife here to try a pizza we were greeted with noisy staff and we said well let’s just get a simple pepperoni pizza and simple was the key. The man sad the sauce is on the top trust the process so we said ah okay and we did. Sat down and waited about 30 min the whole time waiting he was yelling and fighting with other coworkers completely unprofessional we got our food had 2 slices and threw the rest out it was utterly disgusting and extremely messy due to the heavy amount of sauce they used. Not sure why this place is still in business is beyond me. 100000 percent DO NOT RECOMMEND worse than Chuck E. Cheese find another pizza joint
