Traditions, flavors, and aromas that unfortunately are no longer found in this old country of ours. Thank you. Greetings from Switzerland.
We came all the way from Milan, and it was worth it! Kind, friendly, helpful, and down-to-earth, just the way I like it. Dishes cooked with love and skill. I'll post the photos: rib ragù (the photo shows my half portion 😉), porcini risotto. Then roast kid goat and braised baby ale. Polenta and a superb celeriac puree. Leave me alone.
Literally the place where we've eaten the best meat in the last 10 years, so much so that we called the chef into the dining room to compliment him. I recommend the quality cut, the cooking method, and the seasonings were perfect; the fillet and tagliata melted in your mouth. The quantity was also there, as you can see from the photos. Just the meat and side dish were filling, so much so that we struggled to finish dessert. The atmosphere is welcoming and the wait staff are truly helpful, typical of old-fashioned osterias. A true gem among the narrow streets of Viggiù! The quality-price ratio was also surprising. I recommend making a reservation, as it's not very large, and arriving a little early (if it's a weekend) to find parking, as it's right in the historic center. We'll definitely be back, and often! Congratulations!
I was pleasantly surprised by this very rural, welcoming trattoria, where you can relax and spend time in good company, as if you were in another era! The food was excellent, beautifully cooked, and the portions were generous. The service was also excellent, considering it's a family-run restaurant, and they were very friendly. We shared a first course, but they actually brought us two whole portions, charging us for one. We also had a grilled steak with beans and a Milanese cutlet with a side of divinely flavored potatoes, both very generous portions, plus water and service charge. All in all, €14 per person for two people, for a grand total of €28. What more can I say? If only we weren't from the South, we'd become regulars!
A traditional restaurant with delicious food. We visited during our short vacation. We enjoyed authentic cuisine. Gatto Nero has a small daily specials menu, but it offers something for every taste. The restaurant doesn't open until 8 p.m. and is mostly frequented by locals, which was another plus for us. It was delicious; we'll definitely be back.
Excellent food, a family atmosphere, generous portions, and reasonable prices. Kudos to all the staff, always friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
Exceptional food and friendly environment, smiling faces and generous portions of traditional Italian cuisine! Federico is a great chef and his passion for cooking shows in the taste of all his dishes. Thank you for the amazing experience!
We had the pleasure of dining at Gatto Nero with a group of friends, and the experience was exceptional. Every dish, from the delicious tagliata to the other delicious flavors, was prepared with great skill and attention. You can truly taste the passion and care put into every course. The convivial atmosphere made the meal even more enjoyable, and we cannot thank Ilaria and Gaia enough, always attentive and ready to accommodate every request with helpfulness and courtesy. Chef Federico, thank you for this memorable culinary experience!
A small, homey trattoria, informal but with truly delicious dishes. Despite the "homemade" menu, I was pleased to note that it's also popular with young people, often at large tables. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended!
Our family of four arrived late into Viggiu close to 10pm, and the restaurants had closed their kitchens, with the exception of the Gatto Nero. We weren’t hopeful of much more than some cold meats and cheese but chef was more than happy to cook for us and we had the most wonderful Italian meal with four portions of three different pastas, the beef steak covered green peppercorn sauce and some melt in the mouth profiteroles. Everything was excellent and we shared all the dishes around - not a weak link among them, although the beef was particularly sensational. The restaurant doesn’t offer amazing decor or seem much from outside in the street; indeed we ate at a fairly rickety table in a courtyard/car park, but do not let that put you off if you’re all about the food quality (which we are). Some aperols and a bit of wine and we paid around E90 all up which we thought great value. Grazie!
Top.
A casual spot in charming Viggiù. The food is medium-high quality: traditional Lombard dishes and more. Both the first and second courses are worth it, especially the tagliatelle with white ragù and the buttery tagliata alla gatto nero. Generous portions and helpful staff. Unpretentious yet dignified. There's also an outdoor area for a summer dinner. Fair prices. In any case, they don't give you a free pass.
Let me start by saying that I've always eaten off the work menu at lunchtime and I've always eaten well, and I still eat well. €13-15 is fine. I ate a few days ago and spent €24! Because I had 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of red wine, and a coffee! I won't go back to a work menu.
Maybe we got the day wrong.... I called the day before to find out what the menu would be. They told me they couldn't know because it's decided that morning. I had a suspicion, but by then I'd decided on the black cat, trusting the reviews. Result... TRAGIC experience. Platter.....banal, with 4 types of cured meats and 2 types of cheese, all very "anonymous".... First courses:.... My choice was tagliatelle with white ragù. A "ragù" of shredded boiled meat with no flavor whatsoever. The second course was duck à l'orange. I was presented with a battered, shattered wing, with a marble-like consistency that not even a knife or fork could "scratch" and which looked for all the world like scraps. The exposed bones and ligaments gave the impression that it had been "torn" from the rest of the body, not severed. When we talk about duck à l'orange, we mean the cut of the breast, portioned, not the scrap, like a wing... with the addition of a remnant of string that probably tied the wing to the rest of the bird's body. The wing returned to the kitchen. A sweet fruit tart the size of a pastry. But it shouldn't be judged as a pastry. Even the coffee was comparable to the food: poor. The space is about 20 square meters, crammed with about 40 people. Tables for four can barely accommodate four plates. The trattoria has a "rustic" style, but perhaps a little too rustic, bordering on dilapidated. The seats of most of the straw chairs are half-sagged. The atmosphere is far from welcoming and depressing. On the plus side, the bathroom is new, spacious, and clean, but outside the restaurant. All of this, translated into numbers, leaving aside the "location," certainly doesn't relate to the food offered. The duck wing rightly didn't go into the bill. Thank you for the discount.
We stopped by this trattoria recommended by a local! I'll start by saying that the people at my table ate well. I didn't eat at all! I asked for a dish without meat (because I don't like it), so I was served a saffron risotto that they said was meatless. I should point out that I asked twice (by different people), and both times I received the same "annoyed" response. I tasted the risotto and discovered it had meat, so I didn't eat. They didn't even apologize! Luckily, I'm not allergic! Dirty glasses and unfriendly staff.
