First time, and also took my mother here who was visiting from Wales, so a bit of a risk with a few loud but friendly drunkards at the bar, but food was decent and tasty enough, served by a polite young lady. I liked the old school choices on the menu. Recommended.

Dropped in minutes before kitchen closing. Waiters attitude was miles above the average, helped with recommendations and patiently served late guests. Great choice of beers and drinks, lovely atmosphere! Would certainly return!

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!! Me and my boyfriend and our son live in Newbury and came to wantage to meet our friend so booked a table for a meal. The pub was very nice and cosy it was busy but with restrictions as they are because of covid was very well managed. The service was amazing the staff bless them were bending over backward to make us feel welcomed and enjoyed a laugh. We had three courses the food was served quickly it was beautiful well presented and cooked perfectly very tasty only one very tiny criticism my boyfriend would of liked a few more pieces of fish on the sea food platter and few less chips but it was perfect other than that. Will highly recommend to anyone visiting and we will definitely be visiting again well done to the management and staff of this establishment thankyou for making our evening very enjoyable.

Had a brilliant lunch here, service was quick food was hot and it was a proper pub lunch with plenty on the plate. Pub doesn't look that big from the road view but was surprised how large it was inside with plenty of tables, has an outside covered seating area and a play area for children Very friendly and helpful staff Loved the quips on the timber beams One of Wantage's best-ALFRED the GREAT Would be proud !

Highly recommended. I love this place. Relaxed atmosphere for drinking ale. Serves crisps, nuts and pork scratchings to go with your pint of choice. They also have a few bottles of wine and selected spirits with high quality mixers. We took the dog and my knitting, fitted right in. Good selection of cask and keg ales, and cans too. I love the way the original fittings from it being a butcher's shop have all just been left and are part of the style of design.. Also. The toilet walls have been decoupaged with vintage comic books.. amazing to read whilst on the loo or washing your hands! Owner is very friendly and helpful.. I will be coming again when back in the area.

We came here after a family funeral and they honestly did a fantastic job - we appreciated it even more as (unbeknown to us at the time) 6 weeks later we would be at another family funeral but the place we chose for the food after for that visit wasn't a patch on this place. They were so warm and accommodating - we honestly couldn't fault. They catered for alergies well and tea and coffee was included in the package. There was a great selection of food which tasted great - I ate that much that I didn't actually eat for the rest of the day! Thankyou for giving us a great place to share stories of our loved one :-)

Very nice cosy pub. Staff very welcoming & friendly. We had selected 4 different baguettes, they were lovely. We ordered black coffee & it was perfect (I like my coffee strong with a bit of taste). The decor was very pleasing on the eye, the seating comfortable. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

A great place to drink and dine especially with all the offers that they have been offering in recently months. Burger Meal or Curry and any pint for £10 and now the two 8oz steaks with a bottle of wine for £28. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and there's also a good selection of lagers.

First time to The Lamb Inn and enjoyed 3 consecutive visits over the Christmas period. Fantastic festive atmosphere and clearly so popular with the locals. Family and dog friendly. Plenty of tables and chairs. Happy staff. Best nachos in the UK! And you must ask to read a short book on the local history written by the owner's son for a school project at only the age of 8. Fantastic! Great little Market Town with lots of history. Still has a thatched roof when after the Great Fire of London all buildings were replaced with slate. And why, only Alfred the Great was born there in 849! Definitely worth a visit!

Great traditional pub with lots of history as the oldest pub in Wantage. Cheers to that! 🍻

Great cosy pub! Always been a great place for years. Kids welcome with wooden play area in the garden. I can't comment on the food recently but lovely place to have a drink for sure.

Fantastic venue. Just the place to have nice family Sunday 'Birthday' lunch. Something on the menu for all. The vegans ate a tasty veggie curry. The men a hearty mixed grill. The ladies a pasta and a seafood platter each. Prosecco, Beer, Cider and soft drinks kept us hydrated and the puppy happily curled up on my lap surveying the other patrons. The other dogs were so well behaved they were there a while before we noticed them. Service was quick but not intrusive. All in all a very nice, relaxed, enjoyable visit. Highly recommend 👌 👍

Only in town for one night, realised far too late that eating options were limited in this town on a wet Wednesday. Anyway ended up here and so glad I did. Fantastic friendly atmosphere, superb food and good beer. Now my go to place next time I'm passing!

This was my first visit there. Nice, quaint pub. The food was fantastic. Two in our party had burgers and both said that they were the best burgers they've ever tasted! Great service, friendly staff. Will definitely go back.

A good pub. We enjoyed the beer and found a decent spot in one of the older parts of the building. Not pleased to see football screens on in the main room and the food we had was pretty bog standard. Having so many different offerings (several menus) must make it hard to achieve anything better than average.

C
Caroline French

Lovely lunch. Very friendly, efficient staff. Huge portions of food. I enjoyed the crispy vegetables, salad & chips & my lunch companion had a portion of scampi, chips & peas. Only improvement would be a choice of normal or smaller portion for those with less appetite to reduce waste of food.

Very cosy and friendly staff. Plenty of wooden beams everywhere, well it is 17th Century! There is a very good menu together with a 'Today Specials'. We had the seafood platter and salmon fillet all with potatoes, it was bostinly tasty and hot. We were left alone, no one pestering us! Well worth a visit for Bostin pub food.

Nice pub with a good sized garden; beer now supplied by Fullers, which is pretty reliable. Food is okay - standard pub grub with no pretence to being anything else. Good value for money.

Warm friendly pub. Tasty steak mushroom and ale pie and a half chicken roast that hit the right spot for this guy and gal! Returning for the jazz evening on 30th Nov....and perhaps a Korean burger...👏

I went there for lunch with my husband and in-laws. My father-in-law chose moussaka which he said was not like Greek moussaka so he didn't enjoy it very much. My mother-in-law chose the child size lamb roast meal which was still quite large and good value for money.I had salmon which was really nice but too much for me with piles of veg and my husband had scampi but didn't rate it. Very friendly staff and good service.

Here on Sunday for my fathers 90th birthday, 11 of us plus our dog. Lee and staff are a great team. We've eaten here on many many occasions. Always great food, reasonably priced. The pub was full at lunch time, but we didn't have to wait too long for our order to come. Highly recommended

Nice pub shame about the staff!! We visited the lamb in November 2017 and in the Summer of 2016. The 2016 visit was nice, the food was tasty and the wait wasn't to bad. A total change in November of 2017. The staff on that visit didn't seem care we where there. The food took an age to arrive and to be honest wasn't as nice as 2016 even though I had the same meal.

Friendly and helpful staff. Reasonable menu, cooked well and fairly quick but would help to gain another star if udated. Good children's play area in the garden. Very popular. Some good live jazz evenings.

Very friendly and welcoming staff. Service was good and efficient. The pub looks great, however the food was a bit disappointing. Starters were not made from fresh ingredients. Our burgers tasted like McDonald's. No lettuce, no tomatoes, no onions...nothing but beef and cheese on bread. Chips were served warm rather than hot just out of the frier. For that price I was expecting more quality rather than being served frozen food.

S

Waited ages to get served, but a reasonable selection of beers. Loud and very colourful language from the natives!

First visit was surprising- magnificent customer service, amazing food. At second time it looks like no one care when or what. Salmon overcooked, hollandaise sauce flat without taste. Shame. We have been really happy at first moment that we found this pub.

The food is really quite poor. I had a vegetable goan curry that was like a homemade vegetable soup. No spices to taste. Very bland!! Waitress was very Happy & smiley though ... which is always lovely to see

M

The meal said chicken breast but it was chicken strips. The vegetables were not really cooked. The cheese had not melted. We have been here a few times before and had lovely meals perhaps it's a different chef.

Two out of five of our meals were vile. We ordered fish and chips; fish was virtually cremated and the chips were raw. Eight hours later and I still have gut ache. No one checked during the meal that everything was okay. Made the waitress aware at the end of our meal that it was inedible. No attempt to rectify the situation. But on the positive side, the landlord and lady seemed to be enjoying themselves socialising with their friends at the bar. I've had better food at a Hungry Horse. Prices aren't particularly cheap, expected a lot better. Won't be going back ever again.

First of all, no knock on the service staff, they were doing a great job and with all the stuff that's been going on over the last year they're basically beyond reproach as far as I'm concerned. The inside and outside were nice too. The food though... There's absolutely nothing wrong with serving frozen fish and oven chips in a pub (who doesn't love cheap and cheerful), but when most people know exactly what these look like, the gall to put them on a plate in front of you and charge £10.95 for them is sickening. Someone needs to either substantially decrease the price of the food or turn the whole thing into a gastropub and stick with the prices. I know which I'd do.

I would avoid at all costs. Went in with our children for tea when visiting family. The food was awful. Cheap frozen food and over cooked. Ordered nachos and had a hair in it. Took it back to the man at the bar and told him. He said ok and walked away. No apology or offer of refund. Very quiet and nobody else eating but know why now. Very expensive for low quality frozen food

Where do I start?! Haven't been here in about 2 years, thought my sister-in-law and I would try it for lunch today. It started by a waitress coming to our table for our drinks order, we both asked for a small coke, she asked is Pepsi ok, we said alright, later told that they do sell coke in bottles but we were not even offered. Then we waited for the waitress to come back over for our food order, we waited about 15/20 mins so I went to the bar to order. Seen as shed come to our table I assumed it was table service. I'm not sure if it is or not. I ordered the fish and chips which is quite easy to cook and normally a safe bet in pubs. It came out very overdone, the batter was very dark brown (burnt) and there was a puddle of liquid on my plate, which i tried to soak up with a napkin. I lifted up the fish it was actually soggy, literally soaked in either oil or water, I didn't touch it to find out. I told the waitress who was very nice and she took it away and asked if I'd like them to remake it, I said yes if they can cook it properly this time. She went to the kitchen and came back and asked if I'd like to pick something else in case they couldn't make it to my liking. (I wanted my fish cooked NOT burnt. Not a 'preference') anyways, I ordered the cheeseburger which my sister-in-law had, it looked ok. After she'd eaten abit more she realised it wasn't good at all. I didn't wanna make a fuss so I waited for mine to try myself! For the price they charge it was awful! Cheap bun, very cheap meat, a bit of cheese. Burger patty tasted so bad we both refused to eat it. Had a horrible taste. I don't know if it was cheap or frozen or both! A kebab van burger is bertter!! Chips wernt even cooked properly. My sister-in-law also only had 5 onion rings and a 'bit' (I had 6) she also for some reason had some of my fish batter on her plate! How?? Waitress said she'd ask the kitchen (she never came back with an answer!) We explained that we didn't like it and it was disgusting and was very disappointed and that we'd pay for 1 meal not both seen as we'd barley touched our food. (They're lucky we paid at all with that food!) We both went there hungry and both left hungry and extremely disappointed! Waitress on the other hand was very friendly and honestly looked embarrassed of the food!

Found the food pretty poor for the price , burgers looked cheap and definitely burnt , mixed grill had 2 elements that were burnt , my roast was ok but not worth 11.50 pound, will definitely not be returning. It was a shame as it was mothers day treat and was spoilt by bad food and under staffed.

We went in August and the food was terrible, shop bought frozen food most likely cooked in the microwave 'lobster and crab burger' was clearly just a very cheap frozen fish cake from a supermarket. Regardless of how it was cooked it was low quality, cheap, and not freshly prepared. You'd be better off staying at home. When we went the track and trace info was kept on display at the front desk where anyone could have seen it, terrible data handling policy (info is absolutely needed for track and trace, but this information should be handled more sensitively) Throughout 2020 & 2021 every Friday and Saturday night the pub is open there have been large crowds gathered outside the pub, not distancing, with weekly punch ups, the police called out on a regular basis, loud arguments and multiple noise complaints made. They really need to hire a bouncer to break up the crowds after closing, or at the very least to stop the fighting, which very often is on pub property in the car park between 10 and 11pm. Incredibly poor form and terrible relationship with their neighbours and the community that they take no responsibility for these crowds and their staff make very little effort to make sure the crowds disperse. after 10/11pm the crowds often just loiter in the road blocking traffic and forcing car horns late at night. They're wasting the time of the police by not properly dealing with this, which is a weekly problem when the pub is open. They claim to be really busy and hence can't always be perfect, yet the owner seems to have the time to reply to every single negative review on Tripadvisor personally attacking their customers, denying their experience, and purposefully misconstruing what they've said. Makes for an entertaining read but speaks volumes about what you might expect of their customer service. Sort out your crowds and the noise after hours, punch ups every week waste police time. If I were the council I'd seriously think about whether to renew your premises license.

Says food served until 8pm on the website and the menu but i called today and the lady said they stop serving food at 7:30. Nearly wasted time driving there.

J

Nice looking pub but the food was rubbish. We had Sunday roast which was very poor quality and dessert which although being charged top dollar again was very poor. Won't be going again. Greedy and lacking in the ability to prepare quality meals. All they know is how to charge over inflated prices.
