Joe Allen's is 100% Texas...AND that's why we liked it so much. Great New York Strip cooked to a perfect medium rare.. 😎👍💪
Food was freaking amazing!!! Service was freaking amazing 👏 🤩 My first time trying out Joe Allen's Pit Bar-B-Que and will definitely be going back!!!! I'm up here working in Abilene and this place is now one of my favorite places!! I got sausage, ribs, brisket, cabbage and new potatoes. Lots of flavor!!
We just went for the first time to Joe Allen’s and it might just be one of the best barbecue ribs and brisket we have ever ate! Then they have a jalapeño sausage and cornbread! We will come back as often as we can from here on out! We didn’t get the name of the person behind the counter who said he cooked the ribs, brisket, cornbread, sausages and everything else! But he might just be one of our favorite people now….lol. Please thank him for cooking the most amazing barbecue we have ever had! We will see you again very soon! If we could give more than 5 stars we would ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amazing barbecue spot where all the meat is prepared early in the day, so make sure you arrive before everything sells out. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the family spirit behind the place. We even happened to catch a live acoustic performance, which made the experience even better. Every staff member is attentive and always checks to make sure you’re taken care of. Highly recommended! From Russia, with luv!
Joe Allen's has been around for quite a while and there a reason for that. Good barbecue, friendly wait staff. Thee last time we were in there, we had made reservations at another restaurant for a party of 8 and they didn't write it down, like a week out. The only place I could think of that could seat a table of 8 quickly was Joe Allen's. We had to wait about 5 minutes. Thank you.
I ordered the three-meat plate—moist brisket, ribs, and sausage—and everything hit the mark. The brisket was tender and well-seasoned, the ribs were so flavorful they practically fell off the bone, and the sausage had a solid smoky bite. You rarely find barbecue that’s seasoned this well and cooked this tender. Portions were a good size, the smoke ring on the meats was exactly what you want to see, and the overall flavor showed real skill behind the pit. Service was fast and friendly, and even with a to-go order, everything came out fresh and satisfying. All around, this place delivered some of the best barbecue I’ve had in Texas. Props to the pit master—they earned it.
Came into town to visit our kids at Dyess. We were told about this place by a friend. They did not disappoint! We sat down, had our order placed and had food within minutes. The fried mushrooms were huge and delicious. We split a steak and each had our own baked potato. The steak was cooked perfectly. I did my happy dance almost the entire meal! After a long drive, we were starving. Within 20 minutes of sitting, I was so full and happy! And the tea was soooo good! Thank you for a very enjoyable meal!!
I heard about this place from a lady at the airport so I tried it. About 6:30 pm on a Wednesday. Seat yourself, like that. Sat at the bar, served right away, got an ice cold beer. There is a bigger dining room as well but it was just me. Paper menu, very simple, ordered the chx fried steak with fries and a salad. 💯 on everything. The ranch dressing pretty sure not from a bottle. The homemade jalapeño cornbread and white bread, Chx fried and fries were crispy and tasty. I'd come back for sure!
My wife and I were in Abilene for a day trip. We've been craving barbecue, so we looked up Joe Allen's. When we arrived, we found the atmosphere to be inviting. We were seated and served quickly. I had the lunch special steak (New York Cut), and she had the two meat combo. Everything was delicious, and our server made sure we were happy. There was so much food that we didn't have room for dessert.
Our server was most apologetic if it took her more than 2 seconds to bring us anything. She was lovely. I accidentally got served a baked potato when I ordered a sweet potato, so she said I could have both! Result! The sweet potato took mere moments to be brought to me. The steak was amazing (just the smallest cut was too much) and the extra shrimp were grilled to Absolute perfection ! Driving away … I wish I’d had a dessert to go!
Jaeci was one of the best servers I've ever had, she was so attentive and informative and treated us like fsmily. My friend had been there but I never had. We both got the senior plates. $8.00 and she chose sliced brisket and I got the chopped. Not only was is great BBQ but everything we got was. Loved the Jalapeño cornbread and the beans, my friend loved the new potatos and the peach cobbler. The atmosphere was awesome. You have the choice of sitting on the side where you are served or the side that's more cafeteria style. Can't wait until the next time I'm in Abilene.
Although this is a BBQ place but they really have one of the best ribeye steak in Texas. The steak is flavorful and juicy without putting any sauces. You order the steak by inches instead of ounces here. Really recommend order the 2'' steak and share it with another person. My friends order 3/4' and 1 1/3' steak but mine got the perfect medium. The fried onion and okra is also good. Really recommend this place if you come by abilene.
We stopped in to grab quick bite to eat for lunch at Joe Allen’s as we were passing through town. The waitresses were all very personable and attentive. We ordered a hamburger along with cornbread and beans, and didn’t wait long at all for it to be brought to our table. We thoroughly enjoined the great tasting hamburger, and the beans and cornbread was equally good as well. Great food, great service, at a very reasonable price.
Wife's steak was very good, mine mostly grizzle with a large vein running through, the flavor was good though. Wife had a loaded baked potato that made me a little jealous because I had the new potatoes that were described to me as cowboy potatoes (they were cowboy potatoes as much as scrambled eggs with cheese on top is an omelet). The ribs I ordered on the side were phenomenal and falling off of the bone.
Haven't been here in a long time decided to try it again. The place is super cool, got that good old Texas atmosphere for sure. Onion rings on point, homemade bread was a win, the brisket though... Sad and dry 😭 my son and I drove 45 mins to eat here. Not a waste though, their chicken was really good, as was everything else I had.
We ordered a sliced brisket sandwich with veggie sides, 2 meat plate with sausage and chicken + sides, kids cheese stick plate, and kids chopped brisket sandwich. All the meats tasted really good, as well as the sauce. I got the spicy sauce. Before the food was brought out, they brought out some bread. They have 2 kinds of cornbread... regular and jalapeno. Enjoyed the fresh cornbread. The potato salad is really good, but it's a mashed potato style, not chunky. Our waitress was really nice and did great taking care of us. We were a little surprised that the staff didn't wear masks.
I would love to give this place 5 stars but being my first visit, and what I thought this place would be like considering the price, I expected more! First off, the service was not that great at all. She didn't check on us but once! And it was lunch and they weren't busy at all. We had a variety at our table and a big fat bill to go with it. Loaded baked potato means butter and cheese these days. I had the 2 meats, and the chicken was delicious but oh so small! Just couldn't believe the "bareness" I guess is the right word I'm looking for? Good for a first time but will get my steaks elsewhere and for much better price and better service!
First time there last night, I wont be back. Atmosphere was great, clean, five stars. The food was not the best i got the 3 meat plate and 2 sides. The sides were piping hot and great, except the baked sweet potato, that was a little well done and was hard, burnt and collapsed in some places. The meats however where barely warm! Still ate it all, i am by no means picky or a food snob, ill eat cold pizza and chicken, and i dont like wasting food even if its not amazing. The food was alright i will say that. The reason I will never come back is the waitress. So rude to my partner, she called her "big girl" 3 times throughout our dinner, will not be back.
This place was suggested by a friend. He said it was great. Sadly, I was sorely disappointed. Chicken, luke warm and no flavor. Pinto beans, cold and tasteless. The frozen okra was good. Deep fried. Catfish was the best and a side salad. The bldg is really cool. Bar was good. Sadly all tables in the bar were empty from people. Yet, all tables had dirty dishes. The bar was the same. I suspect I will not go here again. Quite a disappointment.
We had a one night stay in Abilene and was hopeful to get some good Texas BBQ. There wasn't a lot to choose from. I loved the look of this place when we pulled up. The service was really great. You can order by the plate or the pound. Since we can't take leftovers we did plates. I got sausage, ribs and brisket. Sausage was good, the ribs were pretty good. I liked the rub and they pulled off the bone perfectly. The brisket was terrible. I couldn't eat it. I don't think it was smoked long enough because it was like biting into leather. There was a layer of fat on it that really should have rendered if it was cooked long enough. The sides were good. Better than a lot of bbq places. Overall the food was good and I would go again just to see if the brisket was a fluke.
All I can say is WOW! The $10 pork chops were OVER priced. They were super dry, tough and no flavor. Smoked cardboard might have been better!! I noticed another guest sitting across from us was experiencing the same issues. He was eating alone and I saw him shake his head in disgust as he struggled to cut his meat. Too bad because Joe Allen's has been a legendary place for ever. I guess you get what you pay for.
