Opinions de Echigo Home Cook Alameda
Having spent a lot of time alll over Japan I really appreciate Echigo. It is cute and homey and the price is a great value. Pork katsu is premium and delicious curry. The fish is high quality
eating here is like a warm hug on a cold night srsly, they pull out all the stops and welcome u as if it’s ur own home 🩷 i was so tired and visited another place that closed rly early, so i ended up here and im so glad i did. also the portions are huge and the food is SO GOOD
Have been wanting to try this place for a while after walking past it on Valencia. We went on a rainy sunday night craving Japanese curry & Echigo did not disappoint!! While the nigiri sushi was super fresh & delicious, curry dishes were the best we’ve had in the city since returning from our trip to Japan!! The meat was cooked perfectly— crispy yet juicy. The portions were very generous & the curry truly felt like someone’s home cooked family recipe. We finally found our curry spot!! 🙌🏽🍛
This is a nice Japanese restaurant, the interior design gives you a welcoming and cozy feeling. Restaurant staffs were very attentive, greeted us right when we walked in. Honestly at first I didn’t expect much from dining here. But I was blown away by the presentation and taste of the food! The sashimi was so fresh, definitely try their sashimi platter, the fish was so soft and tasty and didn’t have any fishy taste at all. Super yummy! Another impressive one was the A5 wagyu beef, so soft that you would feel like it melts in your mouth! They grilled it to perfection! I will definitely come back!
quaint spot for hearty & authentic japanese cuisine in sf - drawn by the cute door as we neared the restaurant. was not expecting much as there weren’t many reviews, but the warm aesthetics of the interior was such a pleasant surprise. after we were seated and while deciding on our dinner menu, i was debating between the omakase (fresh fish flown in from toyosu market in tokyo!) and the ikura bowl. my friends ordered the katsu curry, and mentaiko udon. ultimately, i still went with the ikura bowl as it was what i was craving. the bowl came with three different cuts of salmon sashimi. while it was fresh and good, it was a smaller portion of sashimi than i had hoped for but the rice portion was generous. i would opt to try the nigiris next time! they also have some donburi and chazuke options. overall, we all enjoyed the food and would recommend this place for the calm ambience and delicious food.
We were visiting SF and walking around Valencia Street and came across Echigo. The atmosphere is nice and food and service good.
The sushi is so yummy. The interior looks so fancy. I especially love their fried tofu and mentaiko salmon roll. Echigo rainbow roll is also good. For people who doesn’t like raw fish, I will recommend shrimp tempura roll.
Had a lovely lunch here! Katsu curry was crispy, delicious and perfect for rain. We also shared a hamachi roll that melted in mouth + delicious eggplant🙂

They have Fish from Toyosu market (Japan). The Omakase menu is very good and worth the value! Friendly staff and pretty atmosphere.
Solid new pick for sushi in the mission. There’s plenty of competition, so just another on the list for me. I hadn’t had a pork sando like this before, so I’d recommend grabbing one to try. We went during its soft opening. We were brought an incorrect roll instead of what we’d ordered, and it was slightly confusing, but our first time so we just shrugged it off. Quality meal, just didn’t leave me mesmerized.
A good sushi option in the Mission. We got the hamachi app, the flaming sexy girl roll, and the chef’s pick (6x nigiri, 1 spicy tuna roll). They’re offering complimentary fried tofu as well, maybe for their soft opening? Everything was tasty and priced on par with other mission sushi options. The inside is nice for a date night. Definitely will be back to try their other offerings!
Home cook is a great hook. I had the 49ers roll and it was great. The sake selection is also great, especially on the dry side. The management has some things to be desired, including clean wares and attentiveness. All in all, it was a good experience. I know they are saving pennies to stay alive and that makes sense.

I thought the food was really good and I love getting the salmon matchazuke here. Unfortunately I think the food is quite overpriced ($30+ for the matchazuke) for what it is as well as for the quantity. My gf doesn't have a big appetite and even she finished her meal along with sharing a roll together. Sometimes the service can be quite slow, especially for the rolls. We thought they forgot about it! I do like the ambiance though. It's well decorated and a peaceful restaurant to eat in.

This place doesn't catch the eye on the outside but inside they decorated quite cute. But it was so quiet when we went on a Sunday maybe it was odd time. Food: the sashimi and salad was pretty fresh but the rolls were so small, overpriced for the portion. Everything in the menu looked pretty overpriced for what the portion comes out on. Service was attentive, quick and good. The good thing about them is they do t charge all those ridiculous sf what what fees and pretty clean bill. So we tipped them real good. Overall would come back cause the vibes were cool but for the portion sizes it was pretty disappointing. Basically you won't be full on $65 per person.
I walked by and saw the soft opening sign so made a reservation for a few days later. High hopes given the name and menu. Overall it was just ok given the higher price point and disappointing flavors (or lack of) for many dishes. The lobster sauce uni udon was highly disappointing as it didn’t really taste like uni or lobster and was actually kind of sweet. The curries were also on the sweet side. The sushi was good, but for $20-30 a roll you would expect that. Would maybe give them another try since it’s nice to have a place open late, but in in rush.
3 stars for the food and price. Four of us came by on a weekday evening for dinner. I thought about booking a reservation, but the restaurant wasn't full when we walked in. The place is quite large, and the decor is cute. Their menu is on the pricey side, which is on par for Japanese restaurants. Food, drink, and tax cost our group $200 before tip. However, the food was hit-or-miss. - $13.50 chicken karaage: dry chicken, not good. We didn't finish this appetizer - $12.95 volcano spicy takoyaki, 6 balls: very sparse squid, mostly dough doused in sauce. Pass - $31.50 salmon chazuke: this dish comes with matcha that is supposed to be mixed in with an 8 hour simmered duck broth before being poured on the dish. I didn't want to consume caffeine in the evening so saved the matcha to drink the next day. However, the duck broth was very light in flavor. I might go so far to call it flavorless... It reminded me of eating at Cha-ya, which I have also criticized as being bland in flavor. The seared salmon sashimi was delicious though - $21.50 chicken katsu curry - $16 Echigo stout - $45.50 sashimi tasting - $20.50 fire tuna roll - $13.50 yuzu spicy hamachi roll They gave some (maybe all?) of the tables a dish of complimentary fried tofu at one point near the end of our dinner. It was sweet, but the timing was off for our table. Cute atmosphere, but I wouldn't return.
A bit disappointed. My ikura didn’t seem super fresh (some were cloudy—you can see it the photo), and one segment of uni was definitely bad. Crab was good. Pickle wasabi was bomb. Presentation was nice, service was really kind, and decor in late afternoon was good. Sounds like others usually enjoy the food, so maybe I just had bad luck today. I could give them another try some time.

Had this place saved for a while and finally tried it for lunch on a Sunday. The service was very slow, and the food was worse unfortunately. We ordered a pork katsu curry and a roll. The curry came out after 5 minutes, and then the roll took 30 minutes after to come out. The curry was watery and tasted only like star anise/clove, the pork was cold and all very dry - to the point that a few pieces were inedible. The price of the curry was 30$ which felt too high for the quality of what you get. Go over a few blocks to stone hill matcha for a 20$ katsu curry that’s fast and delicious. Perhaps Echigo was home sick today.
lovely atmosphere but the quality and service was disappointing. 1. the dishes came totally out of order 2. the spinach was incredibly overcooked (even though the presentation was lovely) 3. the chicken karaage was not chicken karaage. it was just standard deep fried breaded chicken - wasn’t juicy or crispy 4. the takoyaki was cold and mushy :( 5. the katsu curry was far too sweet and katsu itself was unfortunately flavorless your mileage may vary but this was very disappointing.

Went for valentine’s day specifically because every other restaurant we looked had a kind of scammy-seeming “special” (more expensive) pris fixe menu, arrived and Echigo had one too that wasn’t advertised on the reservation system! 109/pp for a five course meal. It just wasn’t the level of service you’d need to make that feel special. Service was kind of all over the place - one dish came out room temperature and before we were done with the first one, they asked US if we had gotten one of the dishes (kitchen couldn’t keep track of it?), then brought out dessert while we were still eating the final course. We went excited to try a new casual place and a couple dishes we had seen online, left frustrated and with a bit of sticker shock on the bill. Understand they were trying something new for the night but it really didn’t work and we wish they had just left the regular a la carte service. Probably won’t go back!
AVOID! Went last night with family, March 22, 2024 and could not be more disappointed. Our server took our order but didn't submit it and came back 45 minutes later to take it again! We got pieces of our order and then items we DIDN'T order that they then tried to say was on the house. We had two kids aged 12 and 13 that just wanted chicken curry and after 2 hours, it still didn't come! It wasn't even busy either. We left with hungry kids and only mediocre sushi for the adults. The owner/manager hid behind their curtain as we tried to find out why it took 2 hours for food that never arrived. Don't come here with kids, as they'll put you right by the bathroom or way in the back where they stack cardboard boxes and supplies. Would love a response from the owner but not holding my breath. Paid $188 for 3 beers, 2 lemonades, pork gyoza that tasted like it was from Trader Joe's, a hand roll and three sushi rolls. They even tried to charge us for the Karaage that never came!

Good food, but not worth the wait. Ordered pick up and got a notification it was ready. The waitress told me an additional 15 minutes. Then became another 15 minutes. Waited an hour and a half. Their restaurant wasn’t even busy. Maybe understaffed? Regardless I would rather not wait 2 hours for 3 items that cost me $70.
