Excellent lunch spot for delicious noodles, fantastic spring rolls and attentive surface
Food is super yummy with allot of flavor definitely worth stopping here the staff are super friendly and felt welcomed as soon as we entered the door. (Scratch that be careful with the tipping. We tipped the lady cash and zeroed the tip on the receipt. And today we got charged a tip for no reason.)
Really high quality food for a very reasonable price. I was surprise that both their Chinese and Vietnamese menu items are equally good, better than a lot of Vietnamese restaurants in the city. Their dry fried garlic spare ribs are incredible; big portion, juicy yet crispy, tossed in sweet and savory garlic salted egg yolk. One of the best things I’ve ever eaten. The chefs here are very talented. Only wish they had more vegetarian dishes.
The wonton soup is absolutely life giving. The people who run it are exceptionally kind people as well!
We had a hot and sour soup, Hunan filet and mayo tofu. All were really delicious. The prices were pretty reasonable and cheap considering it's right next to Golden Gate Park (each item was about 13-14 dollars)! The portion sizes were fairly generous, and we're pretty filling. We couldn't finish the entrees, and took it home. It would have been enough without the soup. Would definitely visit again when in the area. The service was great as well, and we left a generous tip!
This restaurant has become my favorite Asian restaurant!! The quality of the food is excellent and the flavors are amazing! I am vegan and also allergic to seafood, and they are able to accommodate my dietary needs and still offer quite a variety of dishes. I recently took a friend there for lunch, who is gluten intolerant, and they were able to offer her many gluten-free options. The main Chef is Vietnamese, so some of the dishes have a Vietnamese slant, which adds a nice touch. The vegetable spring rolls, the string beans, and the eggplant dishes are some of my favorite. I eat here regularly, and the food is consistently fresh, well prepared, and delicious!! The service has also been consistently good. I have observed families with children who also appear to really enjoy their food. I definitely recommend this restaurant!!
i got the bbq lovers chicken rice plate for 15 bucks, and they flew past all expectations for both flavor and portions. the chicken was cooked well and had a nice grilled flavor. it came with fresh chopped vegetables and rice. definitely a repeater for me!
Solid and authentic Chinese food in this newly renovated shop run by a husband-wife duo. Fiona single handedly takes care of front of house while her husband whips up delicious dishes in the back! I’ve been coming here for over two years at least once a week and can honestly say the fast casual Cantonese fare here is much better than what you’ll find on Clement. Faves: - Wonton soup: you can ask for it with classic thin egg noodles or soft medium-width rice noodles. The handmade wontons might be the best I’ve had in SF. The soup is a flavorful yet clean and light chicken broth that they make fresh daily. - Honey prawns: perfectly fried, just enough tang to balance out the creamy sweetness - Beef pho: a solid bowl if you don’t want to make the trek out to the Sunset - Mongolian beef: wayyyy better than Venus, the next closest authentic casual Canto spot - Beef pan fried noodles: classic HK dish, love the mushrooms they throw in
The meal was fantastic. We tried the sugar cane fried prawns, pork and shrimp egg rolls, combo pho, and dry cooked Meiji prawns, and everything was full of flavor. The order arrived quickly, the service was attentive, and the prices felt very fair. A solid five star experience.
I came on a rainy Thursday. Plenty of seating, clean, and quick friendly service. The food is good for the price especially. No hot tea though, I hope they get that in the future ;)
very delicious food and amazing family restaurant:))
So big portions, literally- one portion is enough for 3 ppl to share, soooo tasty, nice service and great food! Recommend
Found this nicely lit gem on Friday night, their Chinese + Vietnamese foods are tasty and well presented. Ordered sugar cane fried prawns, pork + shrimp egg rolls, combo pho and dry cooked Meiji prawns. Order came fast and service was good. Price is reasonable at this date and time.
Delicious! Definitely get the garlic golden prawn noodles.
Really enjoyed our dinner there. . Hot and sour soup was very tasty, not too salty. Shrimp dumplings were really good.
Very good, in a busy area. Must walk, no parking. Food was delicious and scrumptious. Most definitely will try dine in experience
I loved Papa and his Chinese delights! Got seated right away and the food was fast, fresh, delicious, and worth the money. The service was friendly and attentive. Go here and enjoy!
Great Chinese restaurant that exceeded our expectations. The Chinese fried noodle (combo) was our favorite, with the salt and pepper fish fillet a close second. The owners were very nice as well.
Always hits the spot!! Pho is elite and a special mention to the mapo tofu. The lady running it is also the nicest 🙌🏽
Papa’s is fantastic and one of my very favorite neighborhood spots! Delicious food, big portions, and friendly staff. (Special shout out to the mapo tofu, which is truly next level.)
Papa’s Kitchen is my favorite spot on this side of Haight Street. Affordable, homey food and super nice service. It’s definitely a spot you can miss when walking by because they don’t have super flashy signage, but it’s a little oasis. Ma Po is great.
We had the lemongrass chicken with garlic noodles and combo chow mein.. Took off one star for being a little oily. Would like to try them again. Wife and I prefer less salt but generally I say the quality is good.
Easily the best pork potstickers I’ve had in years! No filler, just pure, unadulterated, hot pork nugget action. Sweet and sour pork was above average (meat was a little chewy). You can also get a cup (still big) of the hot and sour instead of the usual tub o’ soup. Will come again and explore more of the menu. I have high hopes for the shu mai.
Have to take off a star personally because they no longer include the bone in their combo pho! 😢 It was my favourite thing about their pho, I loved chewing the meat off the bone! I asked if I could specifically get the bone but was told they stopped doing it because a customer complained - it hurt their teeth or something? 😕 Really sad because the pieces they put in the pho don't contain the same amount of fattiness. The pho is fine otherwise, and my partner likes their orange chicken, but the bone was really the main reason I kept coming back.
Went for a quick lunch and had a great surprise. The place has a clean decoration and attentive service, prices are reasonable. the basil shrimp was extremely flavorful though a bit oily
Do not order the orange chicken. I love garlic but the flavour doesn’t go with orange chicken, especially when you have so much of it. The pieces of garlic were crazy big and crunchy. Good if it has been a garlic chicken, minus the orange. The chicken was also nice white meat but it was dry. On the other hand the basil chicken was good and came with lots of veggies. I thought the veggie spring rolls were going to be fresh but they were fried. For fried, not my favourite but they’ll hit the spot if you’re in the mood.
If you like lots of MSG in everything you eat you’re going to love this place! Granted the products are fresh but the sauces taste like they are commercially bought and not from scratch. We ordered several dishes and the dishes were plentiful and the prices were a good value. Just so much MSG in everything! The atmosphere is stark and kind of cold. Service was good and attentive. The place was clean and well kept.
Decent food for a quick lunch or dinner - a lot of good variety across asian cuisine. My low review is due to the scummy way that they charged a service fee on the receipt - listed it as a fake item such that it would blend in with the rest of the food orders. This kind of thing is actually illegal now in CA!
So me and my partner loved this place when it was a Thai restaurant! It was great. Now that we came back and tried the shrimp and spare ribs dishes, it's too salty. I really couldn't enjoy it ... only thing we liked was the Fried Rice and I feel bad for leaving such a review:( Honestly would appreciate the thai dishes coming back with way less salt.
Great food but be careful with the check…When we ordered to go, the nice lady asked if we wanted rice on the side and when the check arrived, total was high. We had to ask for the details to realize she had charged us $17 for one side of white rice, instead of $2.5. We suspect she thought we were tourists and would not notice. Very disappointing to be scammed like that.
Absolutely one of the most horrible customer experience. Lady boss was rude and impatient. She told us to not be indecisive with our orders. Then proceeded to mess up 2 of our orders. She refused to own up her mistake when we first confronted her with the first dish. The eater has an allergy for prawns but she insisted that he had ordered shrimp. We couldn't be bothered to confront her for the second wrong dish. She then asked about her service passive aggressively. Food isn't authentic Chinese/Vietnamese food (but taste wise its not bad) and I wouldn't advise ordering Chinese dishes. The attitude of the boss needs to change.
We visited this restaurant after walking all the way from Golden Gate Park with our wagon and four young kids, specifically looking forward to enjoying Asian cuisine. Unfortunately, we were met with the most disappointing experience we've ever had at a restaurant. Upon arriving, the server, an older woman, refused to seat us, simply saying "no" without offering any explanation. My husband politely explained that we only needed a large table since our kids are small and could easily fit. However, her only response was, "Go find somewhere else." We were left feeling unwelcome and shocked by such dismissive and unkind treatment. This was an incredibly upsetting experience, especially after the effort we made to get there. I hope the owner reconsiders how he/she treats families and potential customers in the future. We won’t be returning, and I cannot recommend this place to anyone.
Very bad, seafood is raw not cooking. Now my stomach is very pain. The waitress didn't care but argued and mad a lot to me like last time so rude.
One staff member (might have been the owner) was extremely rude and disrespectful. It seemed to be racially motivated since other customers were not being treated so horribly. She gave my family only 5 minutes to order and told them they were taking too long and wouldn’t take their order if they didn’t decide quickly. She didn’t allow us to feed a toddler fries we brought from elsewhere and just chose to be downright mean during every interaction. Would highly discourage others from supporting this business.
Front lady was very rude. We purchased food and when my wife and I tried to use the restroom she said no public use. Clearly we just bought food but she said no more than three people per order. She the proceeded to grab my hand off the door, lock it, and slam it shut. Zero kindness.
★☆☆☆☆ I wish I could give this place zero stars, but apparently Yelp doesn’t allow negative numbers. Papa’s Kitchen at 1705 Haight Street unfolded into a disaster from the moment I walked in. The moment—the only friendly moment—was the first five seconds when the hostess awkwardly grinned at us before remembering her register duties. The food? Don’t get me started. The orange chicken, which I foolishly ordered, was a friggin’ horror show. Imagine biting into a dry piece of white meat smothered in enormous, crunchy slabs of garlic that tasted like they’d been excavated from last week’s trash. Totally discordant with the idea of “orange-flavored” chicken—and around $16 to boot. I’d have been mad paying half that for something less atrocious . Portions? Sure, if you’re starving and desperate. But generous doesn’t mean good—this was more like a train-wreck payload of mediocrity. And just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, the service pulled the rug out: I’ve seen warmer receptions at DMV offices. One local reviewer even braved to say the place offers “comfort food… generous portions,” but honestly, those were strokes of delusion . To top it off, upon returning home, a surge of guilt set in—my wallet lighter and my stomach morally scarred. This place is neither vital nor comforting. I’d rather eat cardboard in a power outage than step foot here again. If you’re not looking for culinary trauma avoid this place.
Horrible, horrible customer service. I walked in here to use the restroom, I saw the sign that only paying customers can do so, which is fine. I called out to get someone’s attention and had to walk back to the kitchen to ask for assistance. I told her I would buy something for takeout, but I needed to please use the restroom. She said even if I purchase food for takeout, I cannot use the restroom, I need to be dine-in only, and shooed me away.
Absolutely Horrible Experience – Worst Customer Service Ever We are strict vegetarians, so under no circumstances would we knowingly order pork. After waiting 15 minutes for our food, we were finally served — only to discover after my daughter had already taken a bite that they had given us meat dumplings. This was deeply upsetting, not just because we don’t eat meat, but because it goes against our religious beliefs. When we calmly went back to let them know, expecting at least a basic apology, the woman at the counter accused us of ordering pork. No apology. No accountability. Just deflection and blame. Then she casually said it would take another 15 minutes to make the correct order — but still did nothing. After more waiting, I even offered to pay again just to get it resolved. Only then did she finally start preparing the correct dish. So in the end, I paid twice for their mistake. All of this could have been avoided with a simple apology and a prompt correction. Instead, they chose to argue and delay, making a bad situation worse. This place clearly needs a serious lesson in customer service and basic respect for people’s dietary restrictions. Mistakes happen — but it’s how you handle them that matters. And this restaurant failed miserably.
