Opinions de So Hunan Alameda
I’m a big fan of Chinese cuisine, but I’ve never had the chance to try Hunan-style food. So, I knew I had to give it a try. We ordered the pork belly, which was absolutely delicious. It was well-seasoned and flavorful. However, I must admit that I could’ve gone a bit spicier. It was a bit on the milder side, and I was craving a bit more heat. But overall, it was perfectly savory and worth the price. The dumplings were also very good, and they were definitely worth it.
In business since 1974 for a reason. This restaurant is off the beaten path, but we'll worth the small detour from Grant Street. I had the spicy cod and curry chicken both were flavorful and delicious.
Sohunan of Henry's Hunan is the best of all the Hunans just ask Hunan! I was downtown looking for Weasel Rimrubber when I spotted Hazel Hatfield go into Sohunan of Henry's Hunan with none other than Margo McCoy, and everyone knows those two don't get along! So, I decided to go in grab a bowl of hot dumpling soup and some fried rice and wait for the fireworks! Well...The fireworks never happened, but that dumpling soup was perhaps the best I've ever had, it was truly spectacular! 5 ☆☆☆☆☆
Quick & delicious. We were traveling from out of town and landed on this spot. We ordered the dumplings, Mongolian beef, and sweet & sour chicken. Loved everything. Friendly staff!
Food was excellent! We had the Hunan shrimp, Hunan dumplings, and hot and sour soup, the food came out hot with the freshest ingredients. Venue was very clean, service was good, nice and quiet. Highly recommend!
Whatever beef dish I got (didn’t see menu describing a beef dish with peppers but I asked for it) tasted a bit sour but overall this is my favorite style of Chinese food so I’ll throw them the 5 stars
A cozy hole-in-the-wall eatery featuring an open kitchen with a flame wok. Enjoy great food and a bit of entertainment from the kitchen that brings the comfort of home cooking during a bustling day in San Francisco.
I can't say enough about this place. It was amazing! A colleague of mine spent many years in SF during his college years and said this was one of his favorite places years ago. We all went, and he advised that the flavor hadn't changed. It was my first time going, and I was highly impressed. There are a lot of food options. The meat pie is a must! Orange chicken was super flavourful. Everything else was sooo good. Location has plenty of seating and staff was awesome. Will definitely go back and recommend to friends and family.
Stopped by on a weekday night and enjoyed this authentic and tasty Hunan experiences in SF. We ordered a few specials (smoked pork, eggplants and green beans, and the money pop eggs). The flavors were deep, clean, nostalgic and comforting. I especially enjoyed the eggplant - they had a smoky, savory flavor and were not oily and mushy, which can sometimes be found at some other places. The green beans, with their slight crunch paired well. Green tea was served in traditional teapots - the tea was light with a floral note, balancing the defined flavors of the food. Downstairs has a modern vibe with bright colored lights while the upstairs offers a more minimalist vibe (where we dined). The upstairs space is elegant and was bathed in the soft tunes of classical music which, along with the green tea, is a great way to cap the end of a day.
When I'm anywhere else, outside of San Francisco, and someone says, "hey you wanna get Chinese?"...it's places like this that I'm thinking of. I can't for the life of me understand why no one can make good Chinese food except Chinese restaurants in this city. The dumplings were delicious and the garlic chicken over steamed rice was excellent. The ambiance was basic, and the service was pretty formulaic. He literally just took my order and ran my card. I wouldn't go so far as to say they're rude, just not particularly welcoming or social. But then again, I came here specifically to get delicious Chinese food and that's what I got. If you're looking for a cozy, delightful setting this isn't it, but if your priority is really good Chinese food then absolutely you're in the right place.
老板热情,饭菜正宗,口味绝佳,值得再来! We love the food and the service. I born and raised in Hunan, the food reminds me a lot of my grandparents and what they used to cook. The owner is also very friendly and welcoming. Knowing my husband is learning Chinese, he stayed for a good amount of time, to explain the food in Mandarin.
So yummy and traditional Hunan food , if you are in town just try it!
We hit SF for the Chinese New Year Parade today (Year of the Dragon). We arrived early so we could knock off our bucket list item of strolling through Chinatown, as well as fi d a great place to watch the parade. Of course, we all were starving by the time we parked the car, and were looking for the first decent restaurant in the area. Option 1 was to go straight to the crowded Chinatown area or, Option 2, head in the opposite direction. We smartly chose Option 2 and were very pleased with our choice. We strolled up to Sohunan, which was empty (because everyone was flooding the main drag), and were immediately seated. Moments later, our order was taken. The food was amazing! Mom had the veggie chow mein, while munchkin and I had curry chicken and port dumplings. Absolutely. To. Die. For!!!!! And, we were told that everything is made from scratch. They even have chili sauce for sale. We can't wait to go back. Thank you SO much for your hospitality, attentiveness, clean, bright eatery with amazingly flavorful nummies!!! See you next time!!!

This was actually a delivery order best Chinese food I’ve had in years. Lived here 37 years. i’ll have a craving and I’ll do a search and I’m frequently disappointed not tonight. Look no further this is some darn good Chinese food Yum Yum Yum. I had dried string beans over rice, sautéed broccoli over rice and a pile of their chicken dumplings and let me just tell you shut up. broccoli cooked perfection green beans cooked to perfection. You don’t need to add anything, just a fork or a spoon or chopsticks. Any one of those will hit you with pure delicious delight!!
Great food and a lovely experience! We dined here on New Year’s Eve and were pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t too crowded. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and made us feel well taken care of. Would definitely come back!
Ambience was great, service was ok, the smoked belly was just too salty for me, the dumplings and the orange chicken were superb and are highly recommended
Stopped in for lunch on a sunny, Saturday afternoon. Dining room is small, functional and most importantly, clean. Service was prompt and courteous. We had the dumplings, orange chicken, pork fried rice, and beef chow mein. Everything was fresh and delicious. Though similar, the dumplings were far superior to the traditional pot sticker — the exterior was firm yet delicate and perfectly thin, and the filling was packed with flavor. Similarly the orange chicken was a standout — generous bite size pieces of crunchy yet succulent chicken bathed in a well balanced, citrusy orange sauce.

Got DoorDash. Was warm and fresh upon delivery. Packaged well. Dumplings were good but beef dish lacked depth of flavor. Was just ok. Not sad about my meal but wasn’t wonderful, just average.

The dishes were too salty for me. The portion sizes are smaller than expected. Also 3 dollars/person for rice.
Not delicious as what I expect for Hunan food and the flavors are quite bland. I'm not sure why the review score is so high, but my expectation for an authentic, flavorful Hunan food was definitely not met. We went in during a weekend dinner and there were very few people - kind of already indicating the place is not so popular. We tried House smoked beef jerky and house special tofu. Although both looked fine, they were really lacking the flavor. I can taste some saltiness but not much more. I was actually surprised because the smoky Beef jerky didn't have actually the smoke flavor. Service was so-so. After we sat at a table, the owner asked us whether we needed water. When we asked to pack our leftover food, they were trying to give us fewer boxes and asked if we can stack different dishes together. Suitable for a quick meal but not the nice vibe - The restaurant is small in a fast food style and not for large parties.
Terrible. Terrible. The saltiest chili oil I’ve ever had. The curry chicken had good texture but was so salty! The dumplings were also so salty. I asked for help. Was shunned

This was the amount of food we received for $70. Left us still hungry after even with rice. Complained to Fantuan, but they said Sohunan stood by this as their standard for $28.50 per dish. Food itself was also very meh, so yeah never ordering here again. At the OG Henry’s Hunan prices are about the same but you get twice as much and it’s delicious.
