Opinions de Mister Jiu's San Francisco
Recommend reservations but we strolled in and sat at the bar. Great time and the drinks were fantastic! Plates are meant to share. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.
Some dishes have pretty traditional flavors, others are very different. Didnt like the winter salad. Otherwise everything was delicious.
Came here almost by chance and left completely impressed. I didn’t even know it had a Michelin star, we came because my husband had seen a Spanish chef we love post about it on Instagram during his SF visit. What a find. The place feels super hidden, right in the middle of Chinatown, and the second we sat down we both thought, “Okay, this place is different.” Everything we ordered was so good: lamb dumplings, sizzled petrale sole, fried rice, plus a cocktail for my husband, not a single miss. Also, the service made the night even better. Big thanks to David and Jovi for being amazing. 1000% recommend. One of those spots you’re genuinely excited to tell people about.
An exceptional experience from start to finish! Everything was handled with great care, professionalism, and attention to detail. The food and cocktails were absolutely incredible, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. A special thank you to David and Jovi for their outstanding service, warmth, and dedication — they truly made the experience unforgettable. Highly recommend and would absolutely do it again!
Great vibes and great food with generous portions. While a bit pricey, I think it was worth the experience. I’d definitely order everything again except maybe the eggplant. Everything off the snacks/classics portion of the menu (milk bread, turnip cake, beef tendon) were delicious twists on more traditional versions of the dishes. Make sure to dip the milk bread in the beef tendon oil for a different flavor profile. The uni cheong fun was expensive but definitely one of the best versions of the dish I’ve had. The grilled pork chops were incredibly juicy but it’s not for everyone with its strong flavors and spicy bitter melons The only thing I’d not get again is eggplant, which felt very average and nothing special.
Last minute splurge, we booked the only appt, last one of the night. But luckily they notified us that an earlier spot opened up. The food took on an interesting take on Hong Kong cuisine. Our favorites were the choeng fun (with clam!), silken tofu (lots of tofu and made in-house tofu), and the chrysanthemum milk tea (lactose intolerant friendly).
The tea smoked duck is a stand out. Once you order, it takes an hour. They use Liberty Duck. Mister Jius perfected the method by making the exterior crispy and the inside still medium rare and moist. We ordered the daikon cake with olive tapenade which was so unique. I don't usually like olive but the olives on top of the daikon cake elevated the taste. Their chow fun with charsiu came out piping hot, the way it should be. I feel like they made the noodle from scratch too. Good amount of soy sauce and flavor. Can never go wrong with milk bread and homemade soft honey butter. Prices are a little higher than other Chinese restaurants but this is quality. Must try
Great place, great atmosphere, service, drinks, expansive and expensive wine list. Essentially a price fix menu, choice of two 1st courses, then a well prepared Peking duck. Went with one other couple. One drink each. A bottle of wine, $140, about mid price on the list. An order of fried rice with the dinner. Ended up, at almost $500 per couple.
A hybrid of fine dining and casual restaurant in SF China town with a Michelin star. Lovely tasting menu with 6 dishes plus more. Particularly delightful in the Ham sui gwok (鹹水角) unlike any in dim sum restaurant, the different ways of cooking the squab, and the lamb meat. The servers are attentive and hospitable. We recommend reservations but if you want to try your luck, visit early, between 5pm and 5:30pm, you may get a bar table without a reservation. It is way more pricey compared to other Chinese dinners nearby. It makes a special dinner for special occasions. We plan to come back to try out its Peking duck.
Amazing dinner experience at Mister Jui’s! We had the six course dinner with the low-abv wine pairing and it was delicious! Our waiter and the whole restaurant staff was very nice and accommodating. Parking is a pain, but that’s no surprise for SF. Will definitely be back to try their spring or summer menu!
No exaggeration… best Peking Duck I’ve had in my life. We had the 6 course dinner that was a surprise with every dish. Innovative, complex and a delight to the senses. Not a mystery why they have earned a Michelin star. Service was impeccable and served with passion for the food. ALDA was incredible ! She was knowledgeable, worldly and her love for this establishment and its products showed through. We had to ask Ethan to come to the table so we could express our gratitude. Fantastic food, hospitality and artistry.
I enjoyed my meal and the service was excellent. This meal really felt like comfort food, it made me sleepy, and brought back memories. It was very filling and I took about half of my food home. I recommend the ham, buns, eggplant noodle dish, tofu, and dessert. Everything was pretty consistent. There wasn't a dish I didn't enjoy. Overall, I would recommend coming here for some excellent Chinese food.
The servers went above and beyond for giving us a great anniversary. The food was pretty good, but it was a bit steep for the price. A lot of the dishes were creative. Depending on the seating location, the background noise can be very loud at sometimes.
First of all, bring your heavy jacket, the restaurant is like a meat locker. Servers forgot my husband's drink order and one of the servers almost spilled our fried rice on the table. Not what I expect from a Michelin star restaurant. The food was good, but I was expecting a little bit better.
The woman who attended us at the bar counter was extremely pleasant, and thanks to her, we had a very comfortable and enjoyable time. The milk bread with green onions was tasty, but I couldn’t quite understand why it was being served at a Chinese restaurant. The sea urchin rice noodle roll felt like its flavors were not well integrated; honestly, the shrimp rice noodle roll at an average restaurant tasted better. The mapo tofu had a wonderfully smooth texture and good flavor, but it was far too spicy. Unfortunately, I ended up with stomach pain that lasted into the next day.
Cool restaurant to visit while in Chinatown. We reserved 2-3 weeks in advance but saw some walk-ins later. You have to pay like $60 per person to confirm reservation if you go for the online option. We visited on a Friday night. We arrived 20 minutes early and told to wait in the bar area, which was another concept located in the second floor, very cool vibe and we had drinks: Limit of Heat and Summer Solstice. Both were excellent! We went down at the time of the reservation and still the table wasnt ready! Had to wait 15-20 minutes for the table, which for a Michelin star place is not the best. Despite that they gave us a nice table overlooking to the street which compensates the wait in a way. We had the summer banquet menu. Overall excellent food. We tried: Yusheng (Halibut), Eggplant, Cheong fun (Sea urchin), and Fried Rice as first and second courses. Everything was super great, favorite the Halibut and Sea Urchin. Then we had the Peking Duck, crispy, with a pluot sauce which was super good. The only thing we weren’t expecting were the portion sizes, everything was so big, after the first courses we were almost full. For desert we had Apricot Kernel Jello and Nian Gao. The latter was our favorite, very fresh, balanced. Definitely visit if looking for a deluxe experience in Chinatown.
Had a tasty meal with good cocktails here. The duck was indeed crisp and flavorful. Loved the decor. Service was fair. Booked again to take some out of town guests. After multiple calls at different times on different days, it has been impossible to reach the restaurant re: the booking or leave a message. Wish they would answer the phone on occasion and at least clear out voicemail so guests can messages as instructed by the greeting.
overall D: Updated from Feb 2025 review below: Food good; service was mixed. Fish dish for 2, bok choy, fried rice, cocktails. Bartender seemed underemployed and aggressive. We are exceptionally disappointed that our $40 fried rice didn't end up in our to-go bag, after spending $250 for dinner. Will not return again. "Incredibly creative and delicious Chinese fine dining experience that rightfully deserves its Michelin star. Attentive and welcoming service, sat immediately without a reservation on a busy lunar new year weekend evening. Fermented cabbage is a flavorful arrangement, scallion milk bread is a creative tofu dish is creative and delicate. Perfectly executed whiskey and gin cocktails. Every part of the meal was worthy of being remembered and coming back for, replacing our other disappointing Michelin dining experience in Chicago."
Service was good. But the good was not authentic Chinese food. Most of the food are you salty. The scallion pancake was not the traditional Chinese ones but looked rather like dinner rolls. The soup was so salty we didn't eat it at all. The lobster that we ordered came work noodles and they too were insanely salty to the point that we had to send it back to the kitchen to get remade... And it still came out really salty .. I don't think we will be coming back but I do hold they stop over seasoning(over salting) cream ingredients and cook more like a traditional Chinese restaurant
Really disappointing experience at what’s supposed to be the only primarily Chinese Michelin-starred restaurant in the USA. Before we even got there, I called seven times and sent two emails trying to reschedule our reservation — crickets. No response, no callback, nothing. When we showed up, they didn’t even acknowledge that we’d been trying to reach them. I’ll give them credit for the ambience being pretty nice, and the portion sizes were actually bigger than I expected. But I couldn’t help noticing we were one of the very few (if not only) Chinese diners there, which felt a bit odd. The service was all over the place. Our waiter rarely checked in to see how things were, would rush over to clear plates while we were still eating, but then vanished whenever we actually needed something. We tried flagging them down multiple times just to order a drink. And here’s the kicker — they made it sound like an extra dessert was “on the house” for a birthday, then it showed up on the bill. The food was hit or miss. The snack course (shrimp chips, mala peanut, carrots with tofu sauce) was honestly amazing — creative use of traditional Chinese ingredients done right (8/10). The dessert trio with chrysanthemum ice milk, apricot kernel jello, and nian gao was also fantastic, just the right level of sweetness (9/10). The Peking duck was solid and tender, though nothing crazy (7/10). But then… the sea urchin dish was just meh and felt half-baked (4/10). The 36-month jinhua ham was straight up bad — tasted like frozen deli meat with random peach slices that made zero sense (1/10). And somehow they managed to over-salt basic fried rice?? (2.5/10). For a Michelin-starred restaurant — especially one representing Chinese cuisine at this level in the US — this was really disappointing. The lack of communication, spotty service, and inconsistent food quality just didn’t match the hype. A few dishes were great, but that’s not enough to make up for everything else.
We got a reservation through email with their host at 8pm. We showed up and were greeted by the hostess who said there was no reservation in their system. After we showed proof, she found the email and said she'd see what she could do. We walked around Chinatown for 30 minutes waiting for a text, now 30 minutes after our scheduled reservation. We went back to check in. She offered to seat us on the bar and begrudgingly offered to pay for our first round of drinks (making it seem like this was some grand gesture), we politely said we'd wait for a table. She said she might be able to seat us before 9, when they do their last seating and we agreed. At 9 sharp, an hour after our reservation, we were seated. The sommelier came over and put down three wine glasses down, we told her we wouldn't be drinking wine, but she told us it was a "gift," but didn't specify wether or not it was just a gift for the sake of being kind or a gift for us being seated an hour late. She uncorks the bottle and pours three comically small glasses for us (pictured below), but we assumed it was just to make sure we had enough to all have two glasses. She then puts the cork back in the bottle and took it back into the kitchen never to be seen again. The waitress then comes to let us know that they were out of the dish they are most known for, and the reason we came in the first place, the roast duck. Not only were we disappointed, but we were also keenly aware that we had to wait an hour after we were supposed to eat and can only imagine that it would have been available if we were seated at the appropriate time. We ordered the fried rice, green beans, wonton soup, chow fun, rolls, and the silken tofu. The rolls came out first along with the shrimp chips with smoked salmon dip. We didn't order that, but assumed it was a gift to make up for the mix up. It wasn't, but we'll get back to that. Both dishes were excellent and definitely the highlight of a night full of low lights. Next came the wonton "soup." I put quotations around soup because it was three dumplings on a plate with about an inch of broth that was room temperature (plate shown below). we were given traditional single serving soup bowls to pour the "soup" in, and the broth might have come an inch above the bottom of the bowls they brought. It was so late in the night, we didn't send it back, but it was the most average and unsatisfying "soup" I remember eating in some time. The pacing of this meal was also extremely odd. We got two dishes at a time, but there was no real rhyme or reason why things came out. The last thing to arrive was the chow fun with shaved horseradish over top, which had such an off-putting odor and we barely touched, because it was just not very good at all. We realized we never got our tofu, but since we were full, I told the waitress we didn’t need it and just wanted to be sure it wasn’t on the bill. We also mentioned we hadn’t ordered the shrimp chips. She checked and said they’d been brought to the wrong table—so not a gift. She was lovely, and it was an honest mistake, just one more in this comedy of errors. An aside, I witnessed one of the most awkward scenes I've ever seen in my life. The table next to us was celebrating a birthday and our server and the GM (I believe, he was kind of just walking around all night looking at all the tables and bringing out food some of the time) dropped off dessert with a candle. They started singing Happy Birthday and IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SONG HE LEAVES THE WAITRESS BY HERSELF TO SING TO A 6 TOP COMPLETELY BY HERSELF. The table wasn't singing either, so it was just her serenading by her lonesome. The bill came and it was correctly not including the shrimp chips we didn't order or the tofu, but not a single comped item for our trouble or an apology. The level of mediocrity we experienced in every aspect was shocking from a Michelin starred restaurant. Cold food, inappropriate serving receptacles, and a clown show at the front of house. Complacency is rich within the walls of Mister Jiu and we will not be back.
I expect a certain level of professionalism from a Michelin-starred establishment, but Mister Jiu's failed on every front--logistics, pacing, and basic courtesy. The service was a total mess. We were never told there was an 8:30 PM hard-out for our table, yet the kitchen couldn't keep up. We sat waiting for 20 minutes just for the duck to arrive. Despite the lag, they allowed us to order dessert at 8:20 PM, which didn't even hit the table until 8:28 PM. The "hospitality" that followed was insulting. Instead of acknowledging their own pacing issues, the bald manager waited until 8:30 PM to share they had another seating. Five minutes later, the same manager approached us and actually said, "Buddy, you have to leave." I was literally mid-dessert. To serve a final course and then physically push a guest out the door seven minutes later is unheard of at a Michelin restaurant. Being called "buddy" by management while being rushed out like a loiterer is the height of disrespect. If you want to flip tables like a fast-food joint, don't charge Michelin prices. If you can't pace a meal properly, don't blame the guest. Absolutely outrageous service--save your money and go somewhere that actually respects its patrons.
# Culinary Heights, Service Lows, and a Deafening Beat Mister Jiu’s, occupying an expansive and pleasant space in San Francisco’s Chinatown, is rightly renowned for its take on Chinese cuisine. The kitchen delivers a formidable array of thoughtful improvements on traditional dishes alongside new creations that use familiar techniques in fresh ways. In purely culinary terms, it rises well past many similarly priced restaurants in the U.S. and abroad. Unfortunately, that excellence is significantly marred by both ambience and front-of-house execution. Start with the ambience: while the space is meticulously decorated, the tables are comfortably spaced, and the restrooms are sparkling clean, the dining room is overwhelmed by incredibly loud electronic dance music—music better suited to a nightclub or dive bar than to a high-end restaurant where people come to taste, talk, and linger. The volume, which we estimate at roughly 80–100 dB, eliminated any realistic chance of conversation and forced us into shouting exchanges, including with the staff. The staff, unfortunately, matched the chaotic energy of the room rather than the precision of the kitchen. Basic operational issues kept recurring: calls to the restaurant went to voicemail with a message stating that “this mailbox is full and doesn’t accept new messages.” At the table, utensils and sauces arrived slowly and only after reminders. Plates were not reliably cleared or exchanged between courses without repeat requests. Even the dining table—visibly soiled—was not wiped before dessert was served. None of these are “small details” in a restaurant of this ambition and price point; they are core competencies. The Michelin Guide reviewers would likely agree that excellence requires more than a great kitchen. It requires a functional, attentive front of the house and an environment that supports the dining experience. This is where Mister Jiu’s currently falls short. As ordinary consumers, we are not paid or compensated in any way for this review. We hope management recognizes that the restaurant’s extraordinary food deserves equally competent service and a dining-room atmosphere that matches its reputation.
