This unpretentious, small Japanese restaurant has become our Friday night go-to. It redecoration is more attractive, the food still excellent . The food benefits, I think, from the relatively small size of this venue. The gyaza deserves special mention.

Ok, so... I've lived in San Francisco for 35 years. Over those many years I have seen this humble place many times, usually when I would go shopping at the dear departed Goodwill flagship store across the street. But it wasn't until I read a recommendation of it on Reddit San Francisco that I finally decided that it was high time to go check it out. Bear in mind that this restaurant has been in business since 1984! Any place that has been in San Francisco that long HAS TO have something good going for it, and believe me IT DOES. I have been eating Japanese food since the late 1970s and this was one of the best Japanese meals I have ever had. They also offer some great happy hour and sake specials so be sure to check them out. Miso Soup - House made. From scratch. To die for. Shishito Peppers - Simply delicious. Lightly blistered, clean oil, sprinkled with crunchy sea salt. Yummm Soft Shell Crab - Panko crust was a nice touch. Darker shade of brown than I expected but skillfully executed. Moist and not overdone. Crunchy! Sushi - Much of it was literally from Japan. It was all fresh and delicious. Wonderful. Sake - Impeccably cold. Subtle sweetness. Superb. Atmosphere - Calm, Cool, Warm Lighting, Soft Music. Gracious, Knowledgeable Service. Great For Date Night.

Price is reasonable especially for how gorgeous the plating is. Fish is fresh and overall delicious. Staff are also incredibly friendly, very positive and cozy atmosphere. Had a great time!

Had a large party of 8, they gave us a perfectly cute back room and table area. Our waitress was phenomenal, the sushi was incredible, and look at the presentation!! Highly recommend. Kept the drinks flowing for a great time. (Yes we did finish all of it)

I absolutely love this place. My husband and I always order delivery and the food comes perfect. Very tasty, fresh and the price is good!

I’ll be honest, I came here with a date I was trying to impress. She was really excited about sushi, but when we got here neither of us were very hungry. Don’t get me wrong, the food looks great, the kitchen is clean, the place is packed and there’s lots of atmosphere. The truth is we’ve been into each other for a few years, and just never managed to get it together. So it seemed that we got a little distracted from ordering… The menu is simple, a QR code on the table and you can check out the photos and descriptions on your phone. We went for the edamame, Maguro and salmon five piece sashimi (they were cool to give us half-and-half Maguro and salmon), and the Spider roll. My date was eating the edamame with chopsticks. OK, is this a test? Fortunately I figured out how to pop out the edamame from the shells and pick up each one with the chopsticks. Passed the test! And as for the sashimi, the Maguro especially was fabulous, the ginger was fresh, but the wasabi could’ve been a lot hotter. I like to have my sinuses blown open. The Spider roll presentation was impressive, it was crunchy inside and they even had wheat-free soy sauce for dipping. I was happy, and I even made my date laugh. All’s good in the world. If I was in a hurry, I probably would’ve been picky about the service. I mean really, did they only have a one server for the entire restaurant? As it was, I preferred being left alone to have fun talking and laughing. So, yup. 5 stars.

Had dinner at this fantastic sushi restaurant two nights ago. Food was amazing, sushi was incredibly fresh and the service from Ruby was awesome. You can’t go wrong with this sushi restaurant in San Francisco and definitely take Ruby’s suggestions… She helped to make for an incredible meal. This will now be my go to sushi place in San Francisco.

A small and rather quaint sushi bar near the major intersection of Mission and Van Ness. The atmosphere is cozy and quiet which is good if you want a moment of quietness on a busy workday. I was surprised to find the prices of dishes to be cheaper than usual for a sushi bar. The quality of the fish was excellent and the service was efficient. Definitely, a reoccurring workday sushi lunch spot.

I got the chirashi bowl for delivery and it came with miso soup. The chirashi was super fresh, the cuts of tuna and hamachi are especially high quality. The miso soup was super flavorful and amazing. The prices are also really good for the quality.

It starts with green tea and a pallet cleanser I’ve never had-it seems to be marinated bean sprouts in sesame seeds and oil. Super yummy. We ate tuna poke and salmon sashimi. Both were super fresh and delicious. Salmon was particularly tender. Price is right. We’re here at 3pm on a Saturday and we have the place to ourselves. Come. Eat. Now.

got a BOGO large sake, wakame, yakatori (two skewers), and SF roll for ~$35 + tax & tip during happy hour. I can eat a lot and drink and I’m full and tipsy. Also great food, service, and clientele. Made a couple friends even! Def coming back!

Zaoh remains the best sushi in town at unbeatable price range! Service is always great, sushi is fresh and the plate presentations put most fancy restaurants to shame!! I have tried most of their menu, and everything is done with the utmost care and meticulous attention to detail. Which reflects on how delicious everything comes out to be. And the ease of parking around the block is always a huge incentive. No headaches! If you come early, you can even find parking right in front of the restaurant.

I love this little place. It's one of my favorites in this city. Happy hour prices are wonderful. Service is friendly, and sushi rolls are great. Definitely recommend. Finally open after being closed for a few months. I was a little disappointed with one of my favorite rolls, the Eclipse, it tasted like the oil was old. Other than that it was great food.

First time visiting in August and did not dissapoint. Such great food and the service was very thoughtful and speedy. Will be returning for sure. Update: Returned and totally worth it. Such excellent sashimi. Wonderful service and so wonderful to sit at the bar this time to watch some masters work! Looking forward to next visit.

We have come to Zaoh about 4 times, and the food never disappoints. You can tell by the way every sushi roll is constructed with such care and love. Me and my girl always go during dinner time, and we like the service. The waitress is quick on her feet and does not interrupt our dinner experience with unnecessary talk like other establishments. My go-to dishes are the dragon roll, the edamame, I love the chicken karaage!! and the salmon sashimi!! Everything is so fresh and delicious. Cannot forget to.pair your dinner with a nice hot sake! This is our go-to place for sushi cravings, and I highly recommend anyone visiting SF to go to Zaoh. They are truly a hidden gem.

Happy #HumpDay Y’all, #sushi always poppin at Zaoh. This is my go to spot whenever I want sushi during lunch time. My tip is always ask for unagi sauce, because it makes any roll you eat (that isn’t already too saucy) taste extra bangin. 🐟Francisco Roll 🐠Rainbow Roll 🤤California Roll (a tribute to bae) To an amazing New Years ahead of us. We used to go here all of the time, and if you don’t mind the terrible exterior, you will have a fantastic time here. It’s grungy, but the food is inexpensive and high-quality. If you drive around for enough, you’ll definitely find parking as well. The service is great, and the food is delicious.

We ordered for delivery and it was very good! The delivery came early, after only 30 min (it was an early dinner - we ordered at 4 pm). We enjoyed the Chicken Teriyaki, but the sauce was slightly too sweet. The Butter Fish was amazing - perfect taste and texture. The tempura stayed nice and crispy even after sitting around for a while.

Decent selection for lunch specials. Although the portion is on the smaller side, it was delicious and the presentation was excellent even in this covid time when many places are lack of care in terms of their food presentations. Dine in is available as of Oct. 2021 though you will need to show vaccine proof due to nutty CA rules. The waitress was fast and attentive. You should give this place a try if you are considering sushi lunch🍣🌈👍🏼🤩🍚

4 stars for great pricing! This Dragon Roll was only $8.95 during happy hour. Quality is good but not stellar but for that price point you can't expect Michellin star quality especially in San Francisco. Overall, great customer service, not crowded and good food.

The food here was pretty good in my opinion. The ramen had a light broth that was still flavorful, but I didn’t quite enjoy the broccoli or the texture of the noodles. The takoyaki was delicious and we ended up getting two orders of that. Gyoza was also good, and the sushi tasted very fresh.

Surprisingly good neighborhood gem and perfect for those working in this part of SOMA. Cuts of fish are generous and the portions are filling. Prices are fair and the service is good. Not in my favorite part of the city but points for being in close proximity to my current job.

Ordered food through a delivery service for Lunch yesterday. I wanted to order the Chicken Breast Teriyaki Chef’s Specials for my coworkers. I guess it wasn’t available, because the restaurant cancelled those items and refunded my money. I felt bad that my coworkers had to go get something else for Lunch, after having their heart set on eating some Japanese food. My items (Shrimp Tempura and Yakitori) were available. The food tasted fine. I’m glad the Tempura Dipping Sauce was included. Some restaurants forget to include that (how can you eat Tempura without a Dipping Sauce?). The Shrimp Tempura Main Dish comes with Miso Soup, Rice and Salad.

...Beginning of update... The amount of food they serve has decreased to a noticeable extent. What's worse: the service has really gone downhill: with the restaurant being half empty, I was refused a seat even in a 2-person table. I had to wait for a space at the bar. After much consideration, I left the restaurant. Service is really essential to a dining experience. ...End of update... I must admit that I found it difficult to review this restaurant. This is because I have never spent so little money (less than $20, pre-tip) and felt so full at a Japanese restaurant: the amount they gave was truly surprising. Yet, Japanese restaurants are quite different from, say, Chinese restaurants, in that Japanese restaurants typically serve minute amounts of food, that which is highly delicate (sometimes it's the taste of the food, and sometimes it's the arrangement of the foods, and sometimes it's both, such as kaiseki, a traditional Japanse multi-course dinner). Therefore, if I were to judge the food they serve by the standard of being delicate, I would have to deduct a star or two, as the food here have no connection to either meaning of delicate, as aforementioned. With that said, I do think this place gives good, or even great, value if you don't judge its food by how delicate the food is. As is evident from my photo, although the salmon was on the smaller side, the amount of tempura was ample, as was the amount of salad and rice on the side. I don't want to reiterate, but I was truly astonished to barely being able to finish my plate. In all due fairness, it is possible that their sushi or sashimi are delicate, but as I didn't order any, I can't comment on those. Speaking of which, they offer combination plates known as A+A, A+B, and B+B, where A is some cooked item, and B is some raw item, and the more B there is, the more expensive the combination plate is. Although the place is quite small, and I don't like the divider at the entrance, service was good and prompt. What I like the most about the service, however, is how the waitress chose to look away while I was signing the credit card charge slip, and deciding how much to tip. At some restaurants, the servers literally stare at you and react based on how much you are tipping. I know how some servers depend on tips to make a living wage, but I really appreciate that this waitress wasn't giving me any pressure to tip: because I felt so comfortable, I tipped even more than I usually would.
