Tasty and Fresh middle Eastern fare!
I saw this on Instagram recently and knew I had to try it. Lo and behold I found myself in Harlem one day and I made a bee line! There was a short line in front of this take-out only spot. It truly is the definition of no frills. There is barely enough room for two customers to stand side by side. A menu is available above the counter otherwise everything is behind plexiglass.
This is my first time here. Is so true what they say. The food and the amount they give. I ordered a large oxtail, a large curry goat, a large order of curry chicken wow tasteful and a beef patty. Now they have a customer for life. I don’t have to go nowhere else but this spot yes is a line but let me tell you it’s worth it just be patient. She will come out. Take your order and I’m eating right now. I’m eating jerk chicken curry goat oxtail this place is a 5 Star a 5 Star matter of fact, beyond the five stars triple diamond 💎 💎 💎I have write again. While eating tasting the ingredients like an explosion driving my tastebuds crazy. They need to open one or two three restaurants in the Dykeman area 200 street. And the portion just want thank God for this lovely cozy place. And for the workers and Thier loving smile. I feel the family present there. And the peace of the people waiting in line because of the food. The line is the worth. Thank you staffs and the cooks. This is a phenomenal. Restaurant. Thank you thank you and thank YOU!!!.
Hands down best flavourful Jerk Chicken! And baby that Mac and Cheese! 24 hours always fresh too!
The cuisine is Jamaican - Caribbean. Stew peas, brown-stew chicken, curry goat and chicken, oxtail and more are on deck. I asked for the small curry chicken, but they were out! I panicked and got the fried chicken. It looked she was about to tell me they were out of that as well. But she went in the back and in about 5 minutes was walking out the door with a nice heavy plate. I was shocked at how heavy it was considering I got the small $6 famous plate. No wonder Instagram was going crazy for this! I got three pieces of drums, a healthy amount of rice and peas and a smaller but equally healthy portion of steamed cabbage that also included corn and green beans. It was absolutely delicious. The chicken was moist and succulent, the cabbage was seasoned well and the rice and peas didn't have as much coconut flavor in it, which was pretty nice. I went back a second time and got curry chicken plate. To be honest I was not impressed at all. It had the right elements and the right colors but there is practically no flavor to it at all. I think it was rushed and didn't have much time to simmer. It was a little disappointing! I'm still giving it five stars for the fill up Factor alone. I'll update when I try the oxtail.
King Barka offers a variety of meats over a bed of rice and peas for just $6. At this location, the line does move pretty slow but the food is well worth the wait. Do note that the 145th Street location doesn't charge tax, has larger portions, and comes with a drink but I prefer the food at this location.
The line is worth the wait, the jerk chicken is super juicy and delicious. The rasta pasta is a fail through. Very overcooked and unpleasant. The lack of mac and cheese is disappointing because that would be a perfect side. Also I asked for cabbage but they never put it in the plate.
Everyone HAS TO come eat here. I've never had Jamaican food and we were super hungry one night and decided to stop in. We got curry lamb with rice and cabbage and it was literally one of the best things I've ever had. It was so good that we came back the next night and tried their jerk chicken. Another winner! The service is quick and nice and their prices are beyond reasonable for the portion that you get. I want to come here every single day. Don't even think about it, just go!!!
Good local spot if you want to get something quick. Food was very good and a great size portion. We ordered two small jerk chicken and it was more than enough. The texture and taste of the chicken was good just wished the skin wasn’t so soggy. Overall it was a great experience and well back for more! Thank you.
I came across this restaurant on IG. I decided to give it a try and visited in early October 2024. I didn’t realize I’ve always passed by this restaurant and would see the line out the door. I figured the wait must be worth it and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the small stew chicken $6 which came with rice and peas and cabbage (with peas and carrots) and a side of baked macaroni and cheese. Although I ordered a small I thought it was a huge serving. The food was actually really good. Since it’s a Caribbean restaurant, I was nervous the stew chicken might have been spicy. But no complaints here I was able to enjoy it. It didn’t come with a free beverage as it advertises on IG. The restaurant accepts cash or card.
I’ve been coming here for a while, but this isn’t the first time the jerk chicken has been disappointing. Lately it’s been burnt, hard, and overly salty nothing like how it used to be. It’s frustrating because I used to enjoy it, but the quality has clearly gone downhill. The prices might still be decent and the service is usually fine, but that doesn’t make up for consistently bad food. I won’t be coming back anymore.
Before you order from this place, ask yourself if the worst service in the city is a worthy trade off for food. the food is great. The service is genuinely horrible. You can end up waiting on line for an hour when there are only 3 people ahead of you. How is that even possible? I have never seen restaurant staff work more inefficiently than here. I would say that 50% of the time I've ordered from this place they end up canceling the order, and other times the wait is 90 minutes. It's maybe the worst-run business in the neighborhood.
First time actually ordering something from this place and the food was horrible which was oxtails which was 21 dallors and not even worth it at all. A few hours after eating that waist my stomach started to hurt and I hope they do better and it was nothing but fat on the bones.
The service was good, especially for a Jamaican restaurant, and the value was great for what you get. But the food was so salty it burned my tongue. Maybe it was a mistake, but either way I’m not a fan. I could be picky cause I’m Jamaican, but it just didn’t have the flavor or freshness.
Very underwhelming spot, was looking forward to seeing what the hype was about.. one being the prices but sadly pirces seem like it went up. Oxtail - Medium Size was $19+tax!! And it did not taste flavorful at all, very fatty pieces with a ton of gravy like other reviews mention. Jerk chicken seasoning was great. All the other sides were okay, nothing to rave about. Mac and cheese was cold, lady only put it out to warm up once we ordered so guess a lot of ppl weren’t going for it. THEY DO TAKE CREDIT CARDS. Bit of a wait with line and they are veryyy slow at register so prepare. Would not recommend, better off with a chop cheese from the deli..
I don't normally place a negative review but when warranted I will. An order was placed using GrubHub for a buy 1 get 1 free meal. when meal arrived at house only 1 meal was rec'd. My daughter immediately called the restaurant and let them know about the mishap, but then I took the call. A Mr. King Barka (this was the name he gave when I asked for his name) answered quickly and seemed to be helpful but wouldn't take down my name or any information about the order. We were told to call him the next day and he would relay the message to staff in restaurant and everything would be easily corrected. Needless to say we got the almighty run around. 1st he never answered the phone when we called about 5 times. Then I sent my daughter to the restaurant to see if he'd left a note with them as he'd expected us to return to pickup the food. These women then played in my daughter's face saying that she did not order from that location when the receipt clearly showed that address. They wouldn't allow her to talk as I was on the phone listening. They kept saying it's not this location, it's the one on 145 street. I didn't even know there was another location. Also when we did speak to King Barka the previous night, he said it was at that location on 135th street because he asked me how far away I was so that we could pick it up that same night. We weren't able to do so, hence the arrangements for the next day. Customer service is not the PRETENSE of solving a problem. It's actually meeting a customer half way and doing what's necessary to right the wrong( as they're the one's who left out the 2nd order). Disappointed with the deception and treatment at this disgraceful location!
I usually go to King Barka early in the morning before work at least once every 2 weeks for myself and a couple of teachers for our lunch. Today, I went and waited. I said a good morning very loudly. I saw a woman walking in the back, and she started doing dishes. I then after a few minutes knocked on the barrier. No response. I was not acknowledged, and I ended up getting a few burgers and fries from the corner spot. Side note: The burgers were delicious!! Sad that I want to support a Black owned business and can't be served. The food at Barka is delicious and usually the workers are friendly and delightful. This was my first negative experience, so I will try again in a few weeks. Hopefully, I will be serviced next time. If not, burgers or the salmon over rice at the corner spot.
I ordered from here last week for the first time and received the wrong items. I asked for curry chicken I was given jerk chicken. I asked for white rice, they gave me rice and peas. I just made an order for delivery today, and ordered fried chicken, and recieved chicken that looked like it was made yesterday and it's stewed. The chicken is not even chewable. I told myself the first time that was the last time I would spend my money with this restaurant. And gave you guys a chance again. Totally not happy with this service. Never again. Curry chicken was good tho
Ordered via Seamless; couldn’t find a way to leave a review on the Seamless app. The Mac and cheese was completely tasteless. All the cheese was on top and the cheese still didn’t have any flavor. The curry chicken had no curry. Some parts seemed undercooked. I will not be ordering from here again; it was a waste of money.
