Delicious pastries. Came here Saturday morning and it wasn't too crowded. I ordered the matcha crepe which was pre-made but fresh. It was filled just the right amount of cream and red bean paste. It wasn't too sweet. I also got the lemon custard filled bun and the drink of the month, strawberry white mocha latte. Both were surprisingly good. Recommend trying both!
This is such a cute bakery! They have a lovely selection of sweet and savory treats to snack on, and a classic selection of well prepared drinks. I got myself a matcha latte and Mochi an pan (mochi and red bean bun), and spent some time hanging out in their little seating area in the back. It's a really nice and peaceful vibe, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to have a quick and tasty pit stop while hanging out in the area!
I just want to say thank you to the staff at this place. They were so patient with me. I initially couldn't find the place and they took the time to guide me on the phone and even came out the entrance to look for me. Take appreciated that. I was not sure what cake to get and they showed me a whole selection and described in details to me. My selection was limited due to personal taste preferences and eventually they presented me with an option that was not even on display. Thank you very much for all your assistance!
Literally everything is so good. Love their salads and pastries.
I’m so glad I found this spot! It was super close to my hotel and I loved it so much the first time that I came back again! I really enjoyed everything I had and hope to come back on my next trip and try some more adventurous treats. I got the mango custard pastry and it was incredible! Truly a lovely, cozy little spot.
I have been here many times before and recently rediscovered this place. Very authentic Japanese bakery and nothing is too sweet which is perfect. I had the matcha mochi anpan and it was a damn near perfect breakfast. The crepe is also very good. They are small scale so sometimes I know consistency is an issue. But I wouldn’t give up on this place based on a 1 time experience. I will def be back to try other things!
I'm a matcha fanatic and my matcha experience here was incredible. I ordered the matcha crepe, matcha parfait, and matcha pudding. ALL of them were insanely delicious, my favorite was probably the crepe, but the other 2 options were also incredible. My friend's favorite was the matcha pudding, so it depends on your preferences, but regardless ALL were amazing and VERY reasonably priced! I will definitely be back for more and this will probably become a bad habit haha
Want Asian breads in the area? Feeling like an afternoon snack? This is a perfect place to stop by before heading to many of the local subway stations. There’s a wide selection of breads, pastries, and sandwiches or salads if that’s more your style. The staff are incredibly friendly and are very speedy. For their specialty matcha crepe with red bean cream filling, you can ask the folks at the register to order even if you see the display as empty. They were very kind to make us another 30mins before closing and it was a nice not-too-sweet treat for us! Their bread loafs seem to sell out very quickly (always empty whenever we came past lunch on a weekend or after work on a week day).
A little expensive but very tasty! The options they have here are phenomenal, I had a salmon and cream cheese Sandwich it was delicious! The large drink here are pricy and actually quite small so keep that in mind. I also had the chocolate custard bun and a large chai later. Everything was tasty and I will definitely check it out again!
Fantastic place. Tons of pastry options, most with traditional Japanese flavors. You'd have to come back again and again to try them all, which I recommend. The sriracha tuna roll is good, but I'd recommend the green tea koshi-an, which is a great balance of three classic Japanese flavors - green tea, red bean paste, and sesame.
Popped in for some icecream and I tried their yuzu flavour. It was just a satisfying mixture of sweet, tart and provided a pure refreshing feeling. After devouring that, I bought their matcha cream cone and another matcha pastry which was braided in a flower shape. The food here all looked so intricately made. There is also a bread schedule so I cannot wait to try their breads the next time I visit.
Great for families too. We each found what we wanted. Kids loved their breads and cake as well. Matcha crepe was just what I was missing. I already miss their cake...:(. Eat fresh if you can. Next day, their breads do not taste the same. Their coffee could taste better. Anyway, we liked the atmosphere as well.
Whenever I go to the city I always make sure to stop by this store I studied near by 😭 however found this place by end of senior year I regret so much not finding this place earlier.their cream buns are the best, croissants 🥐 too. most important if you pregnant and craving for something sweet but not to sweet defiantly this bakery is for you! It’s so cozy there. I wish they would open near by where I live down Brooklyn
I'm a big fan of this hidden gem downtown. Very quaint and quiet to just find some really great sweets! I am a matcha fan and they have some of my favorite treats!! Definitely recommend!!
Solid Japanese-style bakery offering a great selection of traditional breads, pastries, and cakes with delectable Japanese flavors. Come here also to grab the discounted items from the previous day. Staff are nice and there is plenty of comfortable seating. The chalkboard art wall adds a nice touch too!
I’ve heard a lot about this bakery and after trying it, I immediately became a regular customer. This bakery is a matcha lover’s heaven. A lot of places in nyc skimp on how much matcha powder they put in their products, but this place has matcha croissants, crepes, puddings, & more dense with flavor and matcha powder- for a reasonable price too. I love the value of this bakery and haven’t seen such a deal in Manhattan yet, it’s a total gem! I highly recommend the matcha croissant & crepe. Can’t wait to try more things soon.
I have been looking for melon pan in NYC ever since I got back from Japan in July. The melon pan here rivals the best I had there (and is miles better than the one stand on Dotonbori in Osaka, IYKYK). The other pastries and milk bread are exceptional as well!
I came here to taste their matcha red bean roll, but was a little bit disappointed by that. However, I am giving this place five stars because other dessert, mocha roll and sandwiches here were really delicious. I strongly recommend their California sandwich. Also, they had beautiful chalk art! (Picture)
Stopped by after shopping at Korin later in the day so most of the items were already sold out. The staff at Takahachi Bakery are very welcoming and helpful. I especially enjoyed the curry bread, matcha parfait, and big gift pack of miso almond cookies. Would recommend to others and will be visiting again to try more items.
it’s rare to find somewhere where you’re allowed to sit for a few hours and do work, and this place was nice enough to not mind! there’s also a little window where you can kind of see the bakers at work. the only downside i can mention is that the tables can be a little dirty and wobbly, but it’s not a huge problem to me! their pastries taste amazing and are pretty affordable, as well as their drinks! loved this place and will def be back!
I go to this place for lunch everyday. So many options yet so cheap. Burgers, sandwiches, salads, savory and sweet pastries, desserts and cakes all delicious. There are small portion salad, perfect for small appetite people. Please be open forever, otherwise I don't know how to survive my work days. Somen salad is my favorite but only available in summer.
Bought the shrimp sandwich for lunch yesterday and Oh My! Was it fabulous! I have tried nearly all of their savory side for breakfast and lunch. If you get a chance try their "egg and cheese" sandwich for breakfast. The egg is sunny side up and when you get to it it bursts all over the place and is just a gooey heaven. Also try the Garlic spaghetti dish and the Kaki (fried oyster) sub. The staff are very professional, friendly, hard working, and kind. Beautiful bakery!
Very nice bakery without the manhattan rush but fast Japanese precision; the buns with cream cheese and coconut were amazing! Sweet, spongy bread as the protagonist with a little cream cheese filled and on top and coconut flakes for a delicate coconut flavor. Definitely will return soon!
Takahachi Bakery is a truly charming spot, perfect for anyone craving authentic and classic Japanese baked goods. I went specifically for the melon pan, and it did not disappoint, it was perfectly sweet and soft, just how I remember it! They also have other classics like cream pan, and it's clear everything is made with so much care. The best part is the cozy indoor seating, where you get a lovely view right into the kitchen to see all the magic happening. Takahachi Bakery is an amazing place to pop into for a sweet treat and a warm, inviting atmosphere. I'll definitely be stopping by again to try everything else!
Absolutely delicious Japanese pastries in a cute atmosphere. I tried the matcha custard danish, which has a lovely, strong matcha flavor, just like I would get in Japan. The yuzu shiro danish was delicious as well with a bright yuzu citrus flavor. I also notice that they also have many savory items and full sized cakes. If you are looking for something different from the usual coffee house or bakery, try this place.
This is a hidden jewel in the city of New York. A comfortable and quiet place, all the pastries are home made and super tasty. Best part? Not pricey at all, and the servers are super nice. The bathroom is spotless also and you can have some free fresh water at the counter. The playlist was very cool too and not loud at all.
I love this Bakery! I only consider the prices expensive but they are worth it 🥺 I arrived very early and was able to get some fresh sandwiches, unfortunately not all the products were in stock yet as they were probably still being baked/prepared. I wish to go again and try more cakes and salads 🤩♥️
I love Takahashi in Tribeca. The prepared food is always fresh and yummy, the pastries are fabulous, their cakes are great too. The service is always fast and easy, and their prices are so affordable for Tribeca, so I'm grateful to have them nearby my office.
I love this place :’) I always come for their Japanese buns - so many savory and sweet options! Great spot to pick up lunch for the day in FiDi - Beef curry yaki ($3.5): 9/10, the filling is flavorful, and the bread is really soft - Matcha red bean crepe ($6.5): 9/10, really creamy and light. Could tell the matcha was good quality. Not too sweet. Wish there was more red bean
I’m not a sweets person (which may mean my standards are lower) but I really liked everything I got - the sweet potato bread, melon pan, miso cookie, and orange chocolate bread(?) were all perfectly sweet with great flavor and texture. Everything was reasonably priced as well, coming out to <$13 total. It was my first time and the interior was much more spacious than I imagined, with ample seating in the back (came around 1:15pm). Will be back to try more items!! Definitely want to try some of the savory pastries and also non-bakery foods.
I come here at least once a week for their quality and well priced baked goods and coffee. Today, they outdid themselves by preparing a perfect mango and passion fruit cheesecake for my husband’s birthday, completely last minute. Cake flavor + appearance were perfect, and service was friendly and professional, as usual.
I’ve been meaning to try this bakery for a while now and finally got to try today with my husband. The breads were delicious, soft and chewy and fillings were not too sweet. We tried the hot chocolate with oat milk as well and it was smooth and not too sweet which was just perfect! Service was very friendly and efficient. Loved the small sitting area towards the back side of bakery where you can enjoy some leisure time while enjoying delicious bread and your drink
If you lack any self control, then avoid this place. I found out the hard way when I curiously poked my head inside this bakery as people were coming in and out. Ended up buying a matcha red bean bun and a soft fluffy cheesecake. Both were excellent and very well priced. I shall walk around this bakery in future to avoid temptation. Well done to the bakers for the delicious treats!!!
Cozy little bakery. Had variety of pastries and drink options. Sadly located under the infamous New York City scaffoldings. The staffs were helpful and there were good number of seatings available in the back. Restroom available nearby the seating area. Hot food were also available which is great for quick bite followed by savory pastries afterwards. The drinks were average but the pastries were delicious. You can also see through the window in the back to see them making the bread. Overall it's a cozy bakery with pleasant experience. Recommend visiting if you are near the WTC memorial/Oculus.
I had a matcha latte that was remarkably perfect. I tried many pastries. Their an pan dough is the stuff pastry dreams are made of. Chewy and sweet inside with a touch of mouthwatering, fragrant pastry tang and an outside that is smooth and perfectly browned. My favorite was the kurumi white bean paste bun with the added walnuts for a rich, deep flavor. Second favorite was the cream pan. Unpopular opinion - I was underwhelmed by the paste in the red bean an pan. The dough is phenomenal, but the paste lacked flavor compared to other red bean paste items I have had. If I had this visit to do over, I would skip that one and the melon pan, which didn’t do much for me. I wish I would have tried the souffle cheesecake, the matcha crepe, and the sugar raisin pastry. There are so many choices here. It’s a top quality bakery. If you’re curious, just go. Don’t miss it.
I've been to Takahachi a few times in the years I've lived here and it's never disappointed. I love their unique variety of pastry offerings as well as their wrapped, ready-made crepes with fruit or red beans and rich cream, and their hoji tea is delicious! The atmosphere is very relaxed and easy to talk or do work in, and has plenty of seating in the back, which makes it perfect to catch up with friends. It's also easy to grab something on the go, since almost all if their offerings are pre-packaged in easy takeout containers or cellophane bags. The cream-based pastries and sweets are definitely a bit richer than I expected at first, but still delicious!
My daughter and I are matcha lovers and only bake with high-quality Japanese matcha. So when we ordered the Matcha Mousse Cake, I was a little concerned about the quality of the matcha used—but it completely exceeded our expectations. We’re thrilled with how good it was! From now on, Takahachi is our go-to spot for matcha cake in Manhattan!
A must try Japanese place If you're looking to experience the charm of a Japanese bakery. Located on Murray street, this bakery offers an impressive selection of Japanese-inspired pastries that are both unique and delicious. I had the Coconut Cream Bun, and it was absolutely delightful. The bun was soft and fluffy, filled with a light and creamy coconut filling that had just the right amount of sweetness. Every bite was rich, yet not overwhelming—perfect for anyone who enjoys tropical flavors. What truly sets Takahachi apart is the wide variety of pastries they offer. From savory options like curry buns to sweet treats like matcha-flavored pastries, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for something traditional or looking to try something new, the options are great. The ambiance adds to the experience—it's cozy, warm, and inviting, making it an ideal spot to enjoy your pastry with a coffee or tea while unwinding. The relaxing atmosphere makes it a great place to stop by, whether you're grabbing something on the go or looking to enjoy a quiet moment. Entrance faces southwest and is wheel chair accessible. Clean restrooms. I recommend this gem and with so many pastries to choose from I will definitely return to try.
pretty cheap, great atmosphere Lots of options besides just bread Tried lots of items. AVOID: Gouda cheese, Gouda ham, Curry Cheese Beef (6.5/10) They skimp on cheese and ham— it’s mostly bread (the bread is good though) Other ratings: Egg salad: pretty average 8/10 Kaki Fry: Kind of dry 7/10 Melon Pan: too sweet 7/10 Beef frank: too much sausage, too less bread, but the bread is yummy 8/10 An Pan: 6/10 too sweet Haven’t found anything particularly good yet but my sister loves everything she’s gotten here
Delicious pastries that are not too sweet and a pleasant place to enjoy them. They also have espresso drinks, matcha lattes, and Japanese style breads and savory items. My only gripe is how often they are sold out of my favorite things when I go (cotton cheesecake is my favorite, and rarely available late in the day).
I loved the matcha crepe - the red bean complimented the matcha really well. I also loved the interior - you can see the pastry chefs working and it gave a homey feeling. The mochi an pan and matcha parfait weren’t that great but I would definitely come back for the matcha crepe and their other pastries! [food insta: @strwbrrryboba for more food :)]
Takahashi Bakery is a nice, quiet bakery to enjoy japanese breads. Come on the weekends for their weekend mix where you get to try 5 mini versions of their breads: an pan, croissant, chocolate croissant, melon pan and sausage bread! I particularly like the tuna tomato bread because of the bread's chewy texture and the not-fishy tuna! Their California sandwich is good too!
Ordered the strawberry cake (2nd popular cake next to Matcha cake). Cream tasted very fresh and mildly sweet which was perfect but the sponge was a bit dry. They weren’t so generous with strawberries between the spongy sheets which was disappointing. I’d probably go back for their matcha flavored pasties/drinks, but elsewhere for strawberry shortcakes.
This place stands out, not many Japanese bakeries in NYC. I ordered a matcha cream pan, yuzu butter cookies, and a cappuccino. As much as I wanted to like it, I thought everything I ordered was good but not great. Still worth visiting from time to time if you're in the Japanese baked mood :)
I used to like this place better due to quality and the selection of baked goods. This was first time visiting after the Covid and I feel like their quality went down a little bit. Honestly I was never again OC there service anyway and that is still the same. This area doesn’t have many Asian pastry options so good for quick lunch of breakfast option.
Reliable bakery for quick eats (sandwiches and salads), and buns and such. I got their fried shrimp sandwich last time, it was good but no pic. This time I got a pork cutlet. The fries looked sad but the seasoning actually made it good, its still soggy but it complimented the sanndwich well. The pork cutlet was actually very good, and the crunchy cabbage shreds are 10/10, with the super light mayo. I’m usually not a fan of mayo but this is different. Its so very airy and I’m a fan.
A cozy little bakery with a great selection of pastries, breads, and sandwiches. They have interesting takes on croissants and traditional French breads but with some flavoring or other twist that hearkens to Japanese taste. It's a reliable place to grab a bite for a snack or something heavier.
A decently priced Japanese bakery a couple blocks away from the Oculus. They have a wide range of lunchable items + all kinds of sweets/savory baked goods. Although all of them look good, it’s either a big hit or miss so I recommend trying out different things. The mini lemon muffin & tuna avocado sandwich were good. What impressed me was they sell sandwich breads in 3 types of thickness to choose from🍞
I stopped by to pick up a pastry this morning on my way to Brooklyn Bridge. They had a nice selection of bread, although it was less traditionally Japanese and more Americanized than I’d expected. I chose the custard coronet ($2.85), which had rich cream (a bit too thick and heavy for me) that came out as I was eating it, but it was good. The staff seemed friendly and I’ll keep this spot in mind for when I’m in the area again.
It is a great bakery to grab light meals, bread and pastries with sweets. Drinks are outstanding. They are usually busy at noon on weekdays, thus they might not be patient with questions. Still, would like to visit and try more items! ☕️🥛✨Cappuccino was amazing. Super creamy and rich with gentle and flavorful taste. I like the coffee beans they choose. 🍵🥛💚Matcha latte was great too. Same, thick and creamy. They have great machine that makes nice foamed milk. 🫘❤️Red bean bread was a classic. The bread was soft and moist and the red bean paste was smooth and mild. Orange chocolate cake was ok. The chocolate was too sweet and made the whole cake too sweet. Shrimp sandwich tasted good. But since it was premade, you kinda expected that the fried shrimp inside wouldn’t be crispy.
Disappointing. The items don’t seem that fresh despite having come right when they opened. The cake and brioche we got were both dry. Also, bits of orange zest or marmalade in a matcha cake is an acquired taste...shouldn’t be in there without warning. The ham and cheese croissant had one small slice of ham and a very small amount of cheese. Lacked flavor or distinction. This place makes Japanese bakeries look bad.
Just ok. If you’re hungry and you need something quick, and it’s convenient, this is an ok place. If you’re looking for good pastries and/or ambience, don’t waste your calories money or time Could it also be that at 9:30 Saturday morning, it was too early for all their best offerings to be out on display? I dunno… My fave was their cheese danish, but I the cheese filling just mostly cream cheese. Matcha AnPan would’ve been better if any of the matcha were incorporated into the dough…it was just a green mess on top
It’s ok place to have a cup of coffee, and have some bakery. But I don’t see anything that really connects to Japan cultures, beside some green tea stuff( which is everywhere in nyc). So definitely don’t recommend if you come to the neighborhood just for this. And as a bakery store, they should clean the rust/mold in their bathroom, that’s really making me nervous.(pictures shows below)
I feel like they gave up. The pictures of their food items was not available. I went around 3 PM, could be that they sold out. Not sure why quality and food options were bad. Just like mustard nothing special below average.
I visited Takahachi Bakery, and unfortunately, my experience left me feeling quite underwhelmed. I had high hopes for this establishment, known for its Japanese baked goods, but my visit didn’t quite meet my expectations. I decided to stop by toward the end of the day, which may have contributed to my impression, as the selection was notably limited. I found myself wishing for more variety, as the offerings seemed sparse and less enticing than I anticipated. Additionally, the cleanliness of the space was a concern; there were a few areas that felt a bit dirty, which detracted from the overall experience. On a positive note, I ordered the cherry tea, which was delicious and refreshing. It had a lovely flavor that brightened my mood amidst my other disappointments. However, the matcha parfait I tried was a letdown. It was dry and lacked the richness I expected, making it difficult to enjoy. In fact, I only managed to eat half of it before deciding to toss the rest away—a rare occurrence for me when it comes to desserts. Overall, my visit to Takahachi Bakery did not live up to the reputation it has garnered. While the cherry tea was a highlight, the limited selection, cleanliness issues, and the disappointing matcha parfait left much to be desired. I hope to give it another chance in the future, perhaps earlier in the day when the selection is fresher and more abundant. For now, I can’t say I would recommend it based on this experience.
I can understand why so many people rave about the quality of the pastries and bread. I guess there isn't much competition in the Tribeca/FiDi districts, so that's why. Unfortunately, if you're someone who has traveled extensively in the US and internationally, you'd know that the food is a-ok. So, I have no idea why the service is that sloppy. I ordered five bread items, a sandwich and a large salad, plus three small (they are REALLY TINY) slices of cakes. As I was in a rush, I didn't check to see how they put my items in the bag. Upon reaching home, about 10 min's walk away, I noticed that everything was just haphazardly thrown into the bag, with everything topsy turvy and two of the cake slices were upside down. I was quite sure I didn't do any somersaults on my way home. Well, for lack of competition, if I don't want to get on the subway, I'll probably come back, but please, your food is nothing to make you compromise on service to this extent. So, Takahachi, please, try harder.
Pros: great prices, friendly service I really wanted to love this place. I've been missing the parfaits in Japan, and was excited to try their matcha parfait; but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. It was pretty one-note as far as textures go, and I don't know if this was intentional; but there was a minty flavor that was a bit strange. The miso almond cookie was better than the parfait, and the shrimp sando wasn't close to be as good as what we had in Japan; but at the price ($6.50), it was pretty decent. I'd come here again if I was in the neighborhood; but would not go out of my way to revisit.
Really disappointing Matcha latte - I was really excited to try the matcha here after I just returned from Japan and have been trying to find a new go to spot in NYC. I was shocked that they didn’t hand whisk the matcha. The latte was clumpy and tasted like nothing and the color was off. Would go back to try the desserts and baked goods, but would never get another drink there.
Maybe I came on a bad day but we came Sunday morning and thought it would be a great place to try out based on the reviews. We bought a variety of items from the shrimp sando to the buns to the bulk pack of buns. The coffee was average. The buns were really dry, like drink a cup of water with each bite dry. The shrimp sando was soggy. I think the buns were not fresh and we were there early so the were selling the previous day’s batch. I really wanted to like it as I am in the area frequently.
I was excited to have their cake for my daughter's birthday party. They looked very pretty on the picture. I called them a week before the party and asked if they'd deliver a birthday cake. They said yes. So I ordered a cake for the party which was supposed to start at noon on Sunday. I asked them to deliver at 5pm on Saturday. They said no problem. However, they never showed up. We had to order a new cake from a different store on Sunday morning. Then they charged me the full amount for the cake insisting that I was supposed to pick up and I did not. Dishonest service. I do not recommend this bakery.
