10/10 to the team at The Auld Shebeen , they go the extra mile to promote the town . Their Christmas market is a “must visit “ in December

I’ve only been here twice but both times were 5/5. Staff are very welcoming, patient and kind. Food is delicious and reasonably priced considering how stuffed you are leaving. Only went in as i’m not local to Athy and thought they might have a dinner menu, very glad I stumbled across it as I’ll be back again.

Went for dinner to celebrate my birthday and we weren't disappointed. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The staff are really friendly and attentive, even putting a candle in my dessert when I mentioned my birthday 🎂 Would definitely recommend 👌 Added bonus was the gorgeous mural across the road

We had a fantastic stay at the Auld Shebeen Bar! The staff were so friendly and welcoming, the room we stayed in was lovely. Great view out onto the canal. The food was amazing!! Kelly was so friendly and couldn't help us enough! Highly recommended 😁

The prices are medium-ranged for the Kildare area, while the ambience is in the upper end—five stars overall. There is actual table service, which is good, you can order food for up to the respective time only, after which the restaurant turns into a bar. The fries were two stars out of five, the soup five of five and the falafel burger five of five; overall ratings of four due for the food. The employees were super kind and helpful, young and cheerful. All though, the owner seemingly, since they were the only ones with no outfit, cleared the tables, has had negative energy. I'll give four dot zero-five of five stars for the service. The tables are cleaned between customers, five of five stars. Summed, a five dot zero-six experience. I would recommend it.

From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, everything about this pub was a great experience. The atmosphere was welcoming, the staff were friendly, and the food… absolutely delicious! Portions were so generous that even the hungriest person would walk out happy. If you’re looking for a place where good vibes meet great food, this is definitely the spot. Highly recommended—just make sure you arrive hungry and with stretchy pants. 🍻😄

We have eaten here both in the evening and at midday. The food has definitely improved from the early days. The menu provides for all tastes from good choice of hearty fresh roast dinners to curries, pizza, and fish and chips.

Great pub the live music and the vibes where good we went down for the battle of the bands and had a great time. The staff are all friendly and pubs very nice. Pool table is cool aswell and the multiple sections provides a nice mix up. I liked the pub upstairs the best

I don't write reviews, but on this occasion can I thank the staff and kitchen team for the service and quality of food we received at a family function yesterday afternoon. It was excellent, from the starter to the dessert , and the entire group were of the same opinion. Well done everyone.

We stayed in the accommodation overnight, Sunday 8th to Monday 9th June 25, arrived to be greeted at the bar by a lovely woman who showed us to our room and explain that breakfast on Mondays is off site due to the bar being closed. We settled in, had a pint and a fish by the canal, then went for dinner on site which was exquisite! Dessert was brilliant too. Settled into the bar with a pint and enjoyed the live music for a while before retiring to the room. I’d give it an 11 if I could.

Stayed in the rooms they have upstairs and they're excellent. The bathroom in the deluxe room was huge with a great bath. The staff were excellent and the fry breakfast was so good. Only issue is the noise from the street and the rock hard pillows. Bring ear plugs and you'll be fine

Ate here for the first time yesterday and I was so impressed. I wanted EVERYTHING on the menu. Settled for wings to start, which were super meaty and succulent. The BBQ sauce was perfect. Had the short rib tacos for mains and TBH when I saw the portion size at first I thought it was a bit small looking but I was fooled, they were super filling and ample for my appetite. So tasty and flavourful, the only snag and why I gave the food a four star was the cheese wasn't Dubliner it was some generic red stuff that just didn't do it for me. No room for dessert, and was delighted they have decaf coffee. The place itself was tastefully decorated for Xmas and the atmosphere was beautiful. The facilities are immaculate and the staff so friendly and helpful. I will be back for sure.

Last night in Ireland...food was hot, fresh and steak a perfect medium rare! Busy, fun pub/restaurant. Give it a try if you're in this area! Service friendly and good!

This was a gem!! Food was truly amazing and one of be best pints of Guinness I’ve had although I haven’t found many bad pints in Ireland. The steak sandwich was actually almost a full sirloin with delicious caramelized onions and pepper sauce on the side. Chips were delicious and crispy 😊. Delicious vegetable soup with what looked like dark Guinness bread on the side. The little town was so very picturesque and I’ve taken many wonderful photos. Lots of local shops with great atmosphere. The pub was also right next to the river locks which added even more atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Although it was very early evening, it was mid week quiet, naturally, a working day to be expected. We just had tea and coffee. The bar man was very friendly, attentive and helpful. There was a beautiful open fire, added to the atmosphere. A few customers having banter at the bar. The toilets were perfect. A pleasant visit, despite being short. Highly recommend this lovely pub.

My partner and I went for dinner and drinks on a Friday night. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with the highest standard of customer service. All Covid regulations in place social distancing etc. Food was to a very high standard, the Italian Burger was amazing. Table service could not be faulted very pleasant and friendly. Staff really look after customers, after our meal we were asked if we wanted a table in the bar to enjoy our drinks. Bar was set up with the same standard and customer service maintained. Very well organised with staff making sure all customers were happy with everything. Looking forward to our next visit would highly recommend The Auld Shebeen for an all round service 10 out of 10.

Very nice bar & restaurant, the strawberry daiquiri was one of the best I've had! Good setup for outdoor dining. The service was great, the waitresses were very friendly and pleasant to deal with. Food was delicious, the only thing I will say is that the kids pepperoni pizza is too spicy for children. We had to take the topping off as the kids found it too hot but I would still recommend a visit!

Fantastic spot for something to eat. It's really good Pub Grub at very reasonable prices. Nothing like coming off the river after a long day with the belly falling out of ya with the starvation and then sitting down to an extremely tasty dinner with proper man size portions. Proper good sized meal that would kill any hunger you'd have on ya and leave the belly happy out and content. Easy to tell the chef or owner knows what it's like to do a fair days work and build up the appetite. The feeding here would fill any man. In short, great food, well priced and in good sized portions like your mother would feed ya. All round 5 star eating. 👍👍

Stayed here for 4 nights and couldn’t have picked a better place. The staff are amazing and go above and beyond to ensure you’re happy and comfortable! The room we had was spacious, comfortable and clean. It was very cold whilst we were staying and the heating kept the room a perfect temperature, good water pressure and temperature too. There’s a selection of fruit, snacks and cereals for before cooked breakfast starts and the cooked breakfasts are AMAZING. A generous portion, quick service and hot food. The staff ensure you are satisfied and offer drinks throughout, you will always have a drink on the table. On the TV in the room, you have a selection of YouTube, Netflix, etc. We overall had an amazing experience and will definitely be staying here everytime we visit family in Athy.

We had dinner here recently and really enjoyed it. The staff were excellent, their menu has a great variety and the food was perfect. We booked online and were seated straight away when we arrived, the place was busy but the staff looked after everyone very well. We will definitely be going back again soon.

We stayed here recently whilst attending our friends wedding at The Abbey. We really enjoyed our stay. Great location, Staff were lovely and friendly, room and communal area was beautiful. There was even a gorgeous rooftop bar. Full Irish breakfast was plentiful and delicious. We will not hesitate to stay here again.

Fantastic B&B to stay in. The room was a good size and immaculate, as was the bathroom. The welcome was very friendly, and the owner even dropped us up to a wedding venue in the town. Breakfast was really good, and I can only highly recommend this establishment if you're staying in Athy

Food is good. Kids menu is good. Good value for money. Staff is very friendly however The service lets down a little bit as waiting staff often forgets requests or are slow to react, it has happened more than once. Not a show stopper but 3 star on the service is only because there is room for improvement. Atmosphere is good as well. All in all recommended!

Went for a nice family meal where we'd booked a table. We all got nice food with very little complaints, I got salad to start that was very fresh, & then fish & chips. The fish was a bit soggy and chips under cooked but others had steak which was very nice, chicken noodles were ok but mixed grille was good. Limited selection of dessert but good price all round

Had bite to eat here today the Gastro Pub when one goes in is excellent lovely and bright and the lay out is well placed. The Staff are very attentive and keep coming back to ask is everything ok and very well presented. The only gripe would be the chips that came with the meal they were stringy frozen chips ,its an afull pity home made chips were not served also the stringy frozen chips were burnt. Hence the 4 stars.

Friendly and helpful staff. Room super clean and decorated with so many details. Restaurants food was delicious. Breakfast is self service cereal, croissants bread for toast tea/ coffee. A little bit of noise until midnight due to traffic and restaurant bar, but it doesn’t bother me at all. I booked here to visit Carlow, it is so easy to take the train 🚂. Price is worthy. Very thankful!!!!

Fabulous bar with a very welcoming atmosphere. The evening we ate here there was a christening party on so the place was very busy but we were seated quickly. The waiting staff were very busy so took a while to get their attention but overall it was a great experience. Staff were very accommodating to my dietary needs.

Lovely staff ,helpful is an understatement they went out of their way to ensure we were well looked after. Our room was spotless the bed clean and comfortable great shower plenty of hot water. It's on a main road so some noise from traffic, there are shutters which we didn't use and they may have reduced the traffic noise, will try it on our next stay. Breakfast is self service cereal, croissants bread for toast tea & coffee. Good value we will be back.

Popped in for quick dinner. Have heard mixed reviews. Had to come home and cook after what I had so….! Had a buffalo chicken burger. Chicken thigh in some sort of southern coating, small bun and frightened with some dressings. Small bowl of chips. I actually asked waitress if I had mistakenly ordered a kids burger! Fish and chips other half had was ok apparently. Will try again at some point as would like to have somewhere fairly local to go but it’s far too expensive for what’s on offer or at least what is presented. Fairly poor. Staff absolutely lovely though. Wouldn’t encourage us back for food at least.

N
Nirvana Barbarossa

Very expensive, almost €17 for a bowl of chicken wings on it's own. As well as the expensive cost they weren't great, chicken was not juicy or succulent, was of a hard texture, like it was cooked from frozen or else overcooked.

I booked a table for me and My friends who were a group of young adults with no children.. We had wanted to go out to enjoy the atmosphere of the pub but instead we were brought up to what I can only describe it as the "kids corner" it was a smaller room upstairs and it was full of screaming children. We were the only people put up stairs that had no children with us. I asked to be seated downstairs but they wouldnt even try to accommodate us. We were very disappointed. Two stars are, 1 for food and 1 for drinks as they were amazing.

Unfortunately the food quality has gone down big time in this place, such a shame as we absolutely loved it here but the menu lacks choice and variety, I’ve gotten the same thing every time as I just didn’t fancy anything else from the menu, the price doesn’t reflect the food gone very overpriced, felt really ill after, cramps, pain in stomach etc. hubby was the same he had the hyland burger I had the chicken burger. Such a pity as staff and owners lovely, service great etc. but for pub grub very expensive.

Tried to stay at the B&B after a wedding - room was literally shaking due to noise from the nightclub. Luckily we had the car and hadn’t drank but driving back to Dublin late at night is hardly an ideal situation especially after being charged €140 for a room that we spent 5 minutes in. I have been chasing management for three weeks to respond to my complaint but they have continually ignored me. The staff were lovely in person and said they would look into a partial refund for us so I’m quite disappointed to not even get a response.

This review is for the b&b above the pub. I have no opinion on the pub itself. In a word, AVOID. We were at a wedding in a local venue, came back at 2am only to find the key we were given wouldn't open the door to the b&b. Another guest arrived shortly after to find theirs wouldn't open either. Only for the fact that a local cab driver helped us by going to the guards (police) to wake up the owner to come help us we'd have had to sleep in our car. There's no one here overnight and no emergency number provided so if anything goes wrong, you're on your own. The owner finally let us in at 3am and it turns out someone had locked the door in such a way that it couldn't be opened from the outside. The next morning I asked to speak to the owner or a manager, the owner was nowhere to be found. A manager was called in on her day off to come talk to me and agreed that we should not have to pay full price (we prepaid the day before), went to phone the owner but then gave us his phone number to call him to sort it out. After calling several times and being repeatedly fobbed off we assume they don't care and won't be doing anything for us to compensate us for such a bad experience, very poor customer service. Stay elsewhere would be my advice. Oh also the breakfast is only continental and the apple juice is the fridge was full of mold, clearly no one checks the dates, disgusting.

R
Robbie

First of all the service was brilliant I can’t fault that however Ordered a curry and to say is was sub standard would be an understatement. I don’t know what they use for the sauce itself but you know it’s cheap. It’s not that hard to make a curry. The chicken was grilled and looked to just thrown into the curry as an afterthought I’ve never had or heard of grilled chicken in a curry. The rice was just bland, the only edible item was the chips. Very poor for a place that has a good reputation.

J
John Keane

I got the pizza with ham and pineapple the pizza was nice but I was given pineapple that was out of date and didn’t realise until half way done that I had realised I said it to the waitress and she also said it was soar and she brought the remaining pizza into the kitchen and then came out saying that the oven does that to the pineapple I just agreed and in my head said I’m never going back they charged me full price for the pizza and put me into a bad mood for the night
