Opinions de Habanero Mexican Cafe Austin
Muy delicioso. Sooo good. Try the Picadillo Plate. Good breakfast too.
If you’re ready for some delicious Mexican food, find your way to Habanero Cafe. This cute little restaurant serves all of your favorite dishes and a few of their own creations. The enchiladas are my go to dish, but you’ll be happy with whatever you choose. It’s one of the few places that has salsa with a little kick. Everyone who works here is super nice. Remember your cash since they don’t accept cards.
Love this place! Humble service, besides the wait (it is worth it), I had my food in less than 10 minutes from when I ordered it. I ordered the Wednesday special Chicken Fajita Ranchera and lived every bite. The chicken was flavorful, tender, and perfect amount of heat to accommodate the flavor. Will be back to try other menu items.
Welcoming and chaotic! The staff are so sweet and never seem phased by the crowds. Absolutely delicious
So far, this is the best Mexican food I've had in Austin. Everything is on point from the salsa to the sides to the mains. The charro beans are fire, the salsa is a fresh with a little kick and the guac is on point. I had the Steak Ranchero this time and it was near perfect. Portions were good size. The steak was cooked just right. Definitely a must try!
So many good things about this place that I don’t know where to start. Everything is absolutely perfect. The Tex Mex is incredible. The chips and salsa are superb, and the meals are phenomenal. Eating here takes me back to some of my favorite spots growing up. You will love that you came here.
Such a quaint and humble place, with food bigger than life. Such nice people who serve and prepare the food. There is so much good food here. But a nice Torta or Gordita to die for will not disappoint. Seriously delicious. Let us thank God above for Habanero Cafe and hope for their continued success, as it is well deserved.
This place is amazing. One of the rare local spots where you can get a great, filling meal in a homey atmosphere for a reasonable price. Delicious food, feels like everyone’s favorite small town Mexican place.
Been coming here for 26 years and love it! Food is amazing and authentic, most of the same wait staff over the years, and they treat you like family. Very tasty and great prices. My favorite in Austin!
One of the BEST Tex-Mex style breakfast spots in Austin, Texas ! My parents come from Mexico and have super high expectations for their Mexican food and they completely loved it ! They especially loved the Ranchero sauce because it was super spicy. Our waitress was also super nice and attentive. The place is small but super cozy! We will definitely be coming back :))
Tex-Mex imported from Oregon? No freakin way. But yes, it’s true. Great migas, carne guisada and hot sauce to pour all over your tacos. Don’t forget the queso - just don’t do it. Hopefully they’ll return to Portland someday - they’ll win the lottery with their menu. If you are in south Austin wondering where the HEB went, come here for breakfast or lunch and ask google where to get your dinner groceries- this is where you get your leftovers so you don’t need to worry about dinner tonight. Enjoy
Shhhhhhhh! Don’t tell anyone else about this place. Diners Drive Ins and Dives take notice. This place is a gem for Mexican food lovers. Prices are reasonable and the food is all made from scratch. The salsa is heavy with tomatoes and it’s hot! The tacos have to be the best around and other menu items will be sure to please too. If you dine in, expect to wait most of the time. It’s well worth it. Cash only so don’t go in expecting to put your plastic to work.
If a place being crowded is any measure of its quality, Habanero cafe is top of the heap. We have a dog and they dont have outside seating so we had to get takeout We got a few tacos like barbacoa, al pastor and egg-chorizo breakfast taco and all them were really flavorful. Also got chicken fajita rancheros quesadilla and gorditas. The quesadilla was amazing, gorditas were okish. We are definitely going back.
If you’re looking for some authentic Mexican food that’s affordable, this is the restaurant for you! The best Mexican food I’ve had from all the Mexican restaurants I’ve tried. This was almost as good as my mom’s food. The waitresses were all very sweet and helpful. I had the al pastor torta, and the meat was delicious! Definitely the best Al Pastor I’ve had at a restaurant (not joking). It wasn’t oily and the pieces were big. My boyfriend had el patron and it was very good. The beef fajita was soooo flavorful. His mom had the ground beef tostadas and she really liked it. His grandfather had the chicken enchiladas and also really enjoyed his food. Like I mentioned earlier, the prices are very affordable and aren’t crazy expensive like most places. The inside of the restaurant was very small and a little warm but that wasn’t a problem. The restaurant felt really homey and welcoming. I will definitely stop by the next time I’m in town! I will say that the lemonade was really sweet. Another thing, we were told to wait outside even though there were enough chairs for us to sit inside. A few more people came in and they were allowed to sit inside, so I don’t understand what that was about. That was the only negative part.
Both my husband and I loved this place. Thank you to the waitress, she was wonderful. It was fairly busy so I was suggesting early lunch or maybe later.
Excellent migas and chorizo migas. Served with good salsa, refried beans, and the oiliest fries you have ever experienced. If this doesn’t cure your hangover, nothing will. I wish I could comment on more of their menu, but we only get breakfast here. No-frills, fast service. This place is worth *gasp* crossing Lady Bird Lake to experience.
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Austin. We moved to Oregon a few years ago, but make it a point to come here at LEAST once when we visit. The salsa is the perfect balance of heat & flavor. Every dish is absolutely delicious. The Chile relleno is the best I’ve ever had. The staff is always friendly & wonderful. You will never want for a refill on your drink!
The price is right at Habanero! The food is so tasty and the staff makes you feel like family when you’re dining with them. My girlfriend and I had two lunch specials and some Mexican Cokes for about 28 bucks! Good luck beating that price here in Austin Highly recommend the Steak Ranchero !!
This place is INCREDIBLE!!! So glad we found this restaurant. The staff is amazing — super friendly and kind. The servers were obviously hardworking but happy to help you. The food - omg - delicious. I had enchiladas verdes corn charro beans and my husband had the beef fajitas. I can’t express enough how delicious the food was. Salsa and guacamole also outstanding. We will for sure be back! Heads up - cash only.
Visiting Austin from Dallas for the weekend and wanted some good Mexican food. This place did not disappoint! Probably the best Mexican food I’ve had in a while! I eat a low carb diet so this was my “cheat” day and I couldn’t have chosen a better place. Had to wait about 20 minutes on a Sunday around noon but it was worth the wait! Had the supreme enchiladas and they were amazing! Husband had the beef fajitas and they were great! Trust me when I say this…. Don’t skip this place when in Austin!
We loved our breakfast here, coffee was good and authentic Mexican food, spicy salsa like it should, we are definitely coming back
Absolutely love this place! Food is very authentic. It is family run. The service is always very friendly and the food is very fresh! Highly recommend 👌
Habanero Cafe is always so good!! It’s one of our go to restaurants because the food is delicious and the service is great! The Habanero Burrito is one of their specialties and it’s the best fried burrito I’ve had. Their salsa is also my favorite salsa. It tastes very fresh with some heat. I’ve also had other menu items and it’s all good! Breakfast tacos, flautas, and enchiladas! If you love TexMex, you’ve gotta try Habanero Cafe!
A coworker (who is a regular here) took me to this place about a week ago and i absolutely loved it. We ordered beef fajita nachos and 2 beef fajita gordita plates and they were the most tender and tasty fajitas that I've ever had at a restaurant. The service was also super friendly and i will absolutely come back. (Update: i grew up on Mexican food so i generally don't pick that type of food when I go out cause it's usually disappointing but this place is really good, their salsa and homemade chips are addicitive) photo update from 1.21.20
A work colleague and I went here looking for some authentic food. We did have to wait a few mins for a table to free up, but it was worth every minute. The food was very tasty and the pricing is more than reasonable. The staff was very friendly and took good care of us. You can also tell they work well together, as everything went quick and smooth. From what I could tell, a lot of other customers were happy as well and many seemed to be regulars. If you can't find a parking spot, there is a parking lot next to the park 50m behind the cafe. I'll return here if I ever get back to Austin!
The best place for Mexican food in Austin. It’s so authentic. The staff and owners are always so nice and friendly. My go-to’s are basic breakfast tacos and sides. I can always count on the quality. Every time I try a new plate though it never fails to be delicious and well portioned. The pricing is reasonable. I’ll never stop coming as long as they’re open.
We've been coming here for years now and love everything about Habanero's. I can't vouch for everything on the menu, but that's because I always order the machacado breakfast plate. The salsa is made in house and zesty without burning your tongue. Even the coffee is delicious. But what makes Habanero's so special is the staff there. It feels like home and we always leave satisfied and happy!
Every few years I'll have lunch here and every time I'm wondering why I don't eat here more often. This is the only non-chain Tex Mex place on the south side that's both down to earth and fresh. I can taste the quality of their ingredients especially their veggies. The flavors are flavoring and service always fast and kind.
Stopped by Habanero Cafe for brunch and it was a delight — their Habanero Burrito with fajita meat, beans, cheese (deep-fried) was indulgent and perfectly crispy, and the Supremas Enchiladas (chicken with homemade red sauce and white cheese) hit the spot. Their Chips & Salsa and Chile Con Queso also made for a great start. The café has a warm, no-frills local vibe, and the staff were friendly and efficient even as the place filled up. It feels like a spot Austinites lean on for solid, flavorful Mexican food without pretense.
I stumbled upon Habernaro Cafe in Austin, and it's a hidden gem! This place serves up authentic Mexican cuisine at ridiculously affordable prices. The moment you step inside, you're transported to a vibrant Mexican town, complete with colorful decor and lively vibes. The food is the real star of the show - flavorful, fresh. From tender tacos to savory enchiladas, every dish is a taste sensation. And the best part isp You won't break the bank! Most meals are under $10, making it an unbeatable value. The service is top-notch, with friendly staff who greet you with a smile. They're happy to recommend their favorite dishes or accommodate special requests. Habernaro Cafe is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Mexican cuisine without the hefty price tag. Come for the delicious food, stay for the warm atmosphere ¡Buen provecho!
I’ve enjoyed here Beef enchilada plate with salsa verde Catfish Ranchero which was well prepared and excellent Chicken and Beef fajitas Beef fajita plate ranchera Picadillo plate with charro beans and rice Chuletas ranchera Excellent catfish ranchera ! I prefer the charro beans over refried tho would prefer them barracho style.
***NOT cash only*** We happened to stumble upon this lovely little gem of a restaurant while we were on our way home. We had just left another restaurant where the service was horrible so we had decided to just go home. I’m SO glad we gave Habeneros a try! It felt like home & it tasted like home cooking! I told my fiancé that this was the true meaning of Mí Casa es Su Casa. The waitresses were outstanding, down to earth, welcoming & all around fantastic! The food from the chips & salsa to the chile relleno, rice & beans….ALL of it was delicious!! We will definitely travel there again!
Any time I fly back into Austin from a long trip the Habanero Cafe is my first stop on the way home. The food is 100% absolutely worth the wait. Don’t be a jerk to the kind staff!
Family owned restaurant with great food and fast service Their enchiladas are delicious and so are the migas Tortillas are hot and delicious Their salsa? So good! And the chips are crispy without being greasy There’s usually some wait at peak times but it’s definitely worth it Also, they now take credit cards
In town from Houston and a co worker recommended this place. There was a little bit of a wait (10 minutes) for 2 of us at lunch time, but it is usually a good sign when a place is busy. This place did not disappoint. The salsa was the best salsa I’ve ever had. Perfect amount of flavor and spice. The food was the best Mexican food I’ve ever had and I eat Mexican food at least once a week. Service was excellent. I’d give this place 10 stars if I could.
Traveling out of state for work, I wanted food like I had growing up. After some research, this seemed like it would be the right place and it was. The Chile Colorado was fantastic and the roasted salsa is just simply not done enough. I even ordered horchata because...well, why not? They were packed and the team obviously trusts each other. I would easily go back!
I have been going to this place for several years. No doubt the best Beef Fajitas in town. Everything else is great too, I have not had a bad meal there ever. It is a small busy place, so I usually get it to go, but does have a good feel to it inside if you prefer to dine in.
My favorite restaurant in Austin. I eat here at least once a week. Love to go on Tuesday so I can get the enchilada special and my partner can get the steak ranchero special. The chips and salsa are so good. Salsa is delicious and spicy. But what really keeps us coming back is the staff. You feel so taken care of by every single person there. Feels so homey, cozy and familial.
Great place Wait was relatively short about 5/7 min for joining on week day at noon Staff very pleasant and friendly. Food was delicious!!! Home made traditional food I would completely recommend. The salsa with the chips is a bit spicy on the tongue which feels good. Daily lunch menu special has great option and prices are very decent!!
Absolutely delicious. My husband and I came for lunch on at 1:00 ish on Friday and there was around a 15 minute wait. We both order the picadillo lunch special and our plates were generously heaped with food (not pictured, three corn tortillas). Unbelievable value for the price, will absolutely return.
The service was amazing, under a 10 minute wait even though it was very busy and we were expecting a 20+ min wait. Staff is very kind and quick. Food was so delicious 😋 we got the migas plate and the chori-migas plate. We tried both the corn and flour tortillas and they were all right. Looking at all the other dishes in the restaurant made me want to order everything. Atmosphere has low volume music due to the restaurant bustle which is good, its a cozy atmosphere. I'd be a regular if I lived closer.
Best authentic Mexican food we’ve tried in Austin so far since moving here three months ago. I’m so happy we ran into this place on a Friday because their chicken mole Friday special was THE BEST THING EVER. Most tender chicken thigh you’ll ever have. Their chips and salsa dip was also amazing along with the staff’s hospitality. VISIT NOW!
INCREDIBLE!! We are visiting from the east coast and needed somewhere to stop before we leave, I came across this place just looking for food on Google and saw all the other great reviews and figured we should stop here. Thank goodness we did!! It was packed with locals and working men, and we knew that was a good sign. We were seated within 10 minutes, drinks and chips with the best tasting spicy salsa I’ve had our whole trip, and the food came out in less than 10-15mins. Everything was DELICIOUS!!! We recommended it to our friends that live here, and WILL be back on our next visit. Thank you for an amazing experience!
Wow!! Really enjoyed our meal at Habanero Cafe! The service was excellent and the food was amazing. I really loved the salsa - Fresh and had just the right kick. I got the Huevos con Chorizo, Super delicious and a great choice. We also got the hievos rancheros, Migas plate, and the cheese enchiladas and everyone liked them as well. I definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in town, I will be back next time i’m in Austin!
From the bars on the windows to the 26 year old building, this spot is everything ‘old Austin…’ it’s a small joint that stays busy, so you might have to wait, but it’s worth it. Classic Tex-Mex plates that taste great, they even changed the channel on the tv for me (big soccer fan).. Awesome service as well. We definitely plan to come back and try lunch/dinner. Great place!
Habanero Cafe in Austin is a true gem for authentic Mexican food! The flavors are spot-on, and everything we tried was delicious. The chicken fajitas and enchiladas were absolutely amazing, and their salsa is the best I’ve had—fresh and full of flavor. The service was quick, even with a wait, which is totally worth it for the quality of food. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic Mexican dining experience. Can’t wait to come back!
True authentic Mexican food at its finest. The service was exceptional and the food was amazing! The daily special was enchiladas with green sauce which was so full of flavor. The house salsa had depth of flavor and a nice spicy kick at the end. If I lived here I would be back often.

A South Austin icon that has been here for decades. Come here for the breakfast tacos & breakfast plates. They have great red sauce. Excellent service. The folks that run it are locals. My only complaint is that I wish it was a bigger place. It gets packed... quickly.
The price is really reasonable and the food is good. Not crazy good but definitely good and definitely in line with the price. I'm originally from the Rio Grande Valley and this place immediately felt familiar. They just need a drive through for breakfast tacos on the go and I would eat there everyday.
Habanero Mexican Café is an absolute gem! The restaurant has an authentic taste and vibe that makes you feel right at home. I tried the Chori-migas, and it was delicious—full of flavor and cooked perfectly. I also sampled the red enchiladas as a side dish, and they did not disappoint. The prices are very budget-friendly, especially for the quality of food you get. This spot is definitely going on my list of must-visit places. I’ll absolutely be coming back again whenever I’m in Austin!
Small, homey cottage turned friendly neighborhood Mexican restaurant. The staff are so very friendly and attentive, the dishes are straightforward, simple, and yummy! You get a complimentary chips and salsa while you wait and there's 1 or 2 well-priced daily lunch specials from which to choose. Great value for the money and a solid standby for a quick, tasty meal delivered with fantastic service!

Delicious true Tex Mex food, steak with eggs and beans. Friendly staff and very attentive. Didn't have to ask for more coffee during our meal. Clean restaurant \nIs a small place but worth the wait.
My daughter and I decided to indulge in an authentic Mexican meal, and I can confidently say that the food did not disappoint. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the service. Once we received our meals, not a single server, including our own, checked in on us. We sat in a small cafeteria-style restaurant where there were at least three staff members circulating, yet they seemed more attentive to other tables, where the customers were Hispanic or white. My daughter and I were the only African Americans there, which made the disparity even more noticeable. Eventually, I had to raise my voice just to get someone’s attention. When I finally did, the waitress claimed that I "scared her." Really? How else was I supposed to get assistance? It felt as though no one would have come to help us at all otherwise. This experience overshadowed what should have been a delightful meal, and it's why I rated the restaurant the way I did.
Very crowded and chaotic I was told it had the best menudo not the case it was very fatty and some pieces were rubbery which indicates it needed more cooking time waitresses are overwhelmed not attentive left half my food and drink to hurry and get out of there
This is a Mexican food establishment. I came for lunch on an extremely busy Monday. They only have an all indoor seating that happens to be quite cluttered and crammed. I can see how some review comments stated that the servers spoke somewhat abruptly. Not necessarily bothersome to me, it’s evident that they’re a very well established restaurant that technically do not need this new customer. As for the food, large portions looked appealing. My enchiladas, I did not like that they were stuffed with slices of grilled chicken. The beef dish? The meat was somewhat nervy. The charro beans and refried beans and rice did have a great flavor. Hence their popularity. So as for the lunch dishes, it’ll be a hit or miss.
Somewhat fun spot, and the waiters were nice, but the food is average. For a Wednesday special, the enchiladas were surprisingly under-seasoned and not wet enough. Nor was there anything noteworthy regarding the beans and rice. Lady who took payment at the counter was quite obviously putting on a fake smile, and kept rushing the interaction. This place wasn’t bad, but there are more spots worth your money

I always order the same thing via delivery app, but not every time is the same quality. I had built a routine of calling after placing my order to make sure they came correct. I didn’t this time, hoping all would be right. It wasn’t. The food wasn’t fresh (i can tell from the oil) and sauces were missing. When i called, i thought i mistakenly called someone’s house the way they answered. They said they were the manager. I’m done. I’ve eaten here for the last time. Eat there, or call and confirm freshness.
I’ve never felt so rushed at a restaurant. We had already finished eating and were just sitting for a moment when a staff member came over and told us we needed to leave because other people were waiting. The way they said it was unbelievably rude and unprofessional. There was no courtesy, no “thank you for dining with us,” just an abrupt push out the door. A restaurant should never make guests feel unwelcome or like they’re an inconvenience. We paid for our meal, we were respectful, and we were treated with zero courtesy in return. If this is how they handle their customers, I won’t be coming back — and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who expects basic respect.
I don’t really understand the hype. The food was just okay overall. The prices were fair, but there wasn’t anything particularly memorable or extraordinary about the dishes. It definitely felt more like Tex-Mex than traditional Mexican food. It wasn’t bad by any means, but it’s not somewhere I’d go out of my way to return to.
2nd time coming here and still don't like it. I always give a place a 2nd chance. And NOPE, I'm never coming back. The waitresses are loud and come off a bit rude and rushed. One spilled tea when refilling the cup and just said oops, laughed and walked away. The menu says fresh lemonade but based on color and taste, I doubt its fully fresh. Both my husband and I didn't even eat our food. I got a picadillo gordita and I couldn't eat it. Meat had no flavor and it was greasy. The gordita was so hard I had to use a steak knife to cut it. My husband got menudo & that was 2 thumbs down. Bottom line it was a waste of money. Disappointing.
Really tight place, dirty outside needs maintenance... Grease ventilation leaking grease bad!!! Looks.like they don't pay attention to detail.. If it looks bad outside then the kitchen must be worse!°°
This place came highly recommended and I was looking forward to coming and trying.i was very disappointed when I opened my taco. I ordered a bacon, potato and egg taco on flour tortilla and I got a French fry taco with very dry eggs and a fake (store bought) tortilla. I was expecting authentic meaning homemade flour tortillas and at least potatoes not French fries. It's hard to find authentic here in Austin who makes real homemade flour tortillas and when I was going thru the reviews and the pictures my friend shared I was very excited but this morning when I went out of my way to come way south to try this spot, I was disappointed and feel like I waisted my money. I don't even want to open my other taco. After reading the article on the wall and the story of the restaurant, my idea of how my experience was going to be was exciting, I was hopeful that I may have found a place that was dedicated to their thoughts of authenticity, this was a disappointment. I feel you must do better by the founders and rethink how the food is preped.
I used to come eat here with my family but do to the limited hours of operation and a far commute we stopped coming. Today I decided to call in an order and I was left on hold for over 10 minutes, so I hung up. I continued to drive to the restaurant and order in since I was already going to have to wait so I asked for a table even if it’s outside, I was told there were about to close at 2pm, which online is states 3pm. I was denied dine in service and ordered 3 tacos of steak fajita Togo. I witnessed 3 other customers walk in and greeted and asked if they are dining in. The first couple walked right in to a table. From what it seemed the “white” customers are treated way differently. I can’t believe the type of racism I experienced from other Latin women just because I was not “white”. I have not got to the depressing tacos I received. I ate 1 and gave the other one to my dog and she did not eat it but smelled it and step away. The texture of the meat was so dry and disgusting and had a weird rancid smell. The tortilla tasted so generic and rubbery. This is definitely not the place we once used to enjoy. If you are looking for good customer service you better be “white” and leaving a tip! The staff here have definitely taken service to a whole other level of disrespect. To the cashier that made the rude remark “oh you want pico” pico consist of onion, cilantro, tomatoes, jalapeños, lime and a hint of garlic salt. I asked for 3 ingredients. I am including the pictures to show that the meat is clearly not fajita cut but some other type of protein. I hope that the owner makes adjustments to their staff and inspect their food processing better. Completely dissatisfied and disappointed. This was a gem back then. This contributes to the New and ruined Austin, Texas I grew up in.
My first time and last time. Very disappointed drove for nothing for a kids size soup for 16.00 . Not worth the time or $. stop being tight with the soup please and learn to brake bread like Jesus did. And learn to give chips and salsa to your customers with take out orders. 👎
