A great restaurant within the Baltimore Art Museum. Worth dining here without a doubt. Good food, service,. atmosphere at reasonable prices. Unless you live in the surrounding area, parking could be a challenge though. Not difficult but probably means finding parking on the nearby streets ( which are within comfortable walking distance unless you have mobility issues).
I recently photographed a wedding at Gertrude's and it was so much fun! It is apart of the BMA but it is separate from the museum itself. The staff is amazing! Very helpful and very kind. It started to rain during the ceremony and they jumped in to help relocate anything important from getting wet. One thing to keep in mind about this venue is that they are very specific with the time they allow the ceremony to start. And it doesn't change with daylight savings. The photos that I shared are from the ceremony after the sun had set all the way. So as along as you hire a photographer that knows how to navigate the lighting situation you will be golden. OR just decide to book the venue based on the sun set.
Location, atmosphere, seating, service, and the menu! Gertrude's been hiding out at the Baltimore Museum of Art for some time now. I discovered Gertrude's while attending a candlelight concert honoring Lauren Hill at the BMA. The food and drinks were flavorful and delicious. They offer a variety of fine surf and turf items and some house specials on the drink menu. Their not too pricey pricey. The candlelit atmosphere gave it a cozy and classy feel. You can dine inside or outside under the stars while gazing at the beautiful garden fountain. Gertrude's dining experience made our date night truly one remember for years to come.
I have lived in Maryland my whole life and I've never visited Gertrude's before. Gertrude's is a lovely restaurant on the 1st floor of the Baltimore Museum of Art. We only had appetizers and drinks while there. Everything was great, from the food to the drinks to the service. I especially enjoyed my calamari and my second drink which was some kind of sangria. They also provided this type of rosemary bread and cornbread free for the table. I am not much of a cornbread eater but I loved loved the bread. Oh the hush puppies were really good too and they served them with apple butter. Yummy!
When Gertrude's was suggested as a lunch location when we were visiting Baltimore, my first guess was that the restaurant at the BMA would be a nice spot where well-off museum visitors could enjoy a meal with their friends. Yup. It was all that and more. The menu turned out to be the Chesapeake Bay sampler that I was hoping to find - multiple types of crab cakes, zucchini based non-crab cakes, oysters, salmon, classic sandwiches, all kinds of upscale comfort food. The housemade sodas were both refreshing and added to the visual appeal of everything on the table. Service was quick and attentive - undecided diners were offered much more information than the menu provided about the different ways to experience crab cakes, and a dropped fork had a replacement in place before it could be picked up off the floor. Multiple runners made sure everyone at our table received our meals while they were hot. The museum is a must-see for a visit to Baltimore, and general museum admission is free, so you don't really need to be rich to enjoy world class art and the white tablecloth experience at Gertrude's.
I had the pleasure of dining at Gertrude's for the first time this past Saturday as part of my birthday celebrations. My fiancé couldn't have picked a better restaurant for brunch on such a beautiful day with the art garden as the backdrop. From the service to the food all was amazing!
My first dining experience at Gertrude’s after the Candlelight Concerts featuring the Best of Bridgerton on Strings. When you see the white linen tablecloth at a restaurant, you expect a fine dining experience. Gertrude’s didn't disappoint with the menu options, libations, service, and ambiance.
I normally don't like to review a restaurant based on weekend brunch but this one is very good. This is a great location, inside the museum building, so there is a possibility for more than food with friends but coming here just for the food one won't leave disappointed. The staff handled our party of 6 very well even though we staggered in over a 15min period. Cocktails were great - I enjoyed the Cheap Thrills with Zeke's coffee infused vodka. We munched the delicious cornbread and biscuits quickly. Then came the Tilghman Island eggs - eggs Benedict with perfectly fried oysters with perfectly poached eggs, a lyonnaise potato side. Dessert was goat cheese cheesecake, rich and delicious. Loved the meal and would return without hesitation.
Everything about this place was great! They have beautiful decor, great food and great service! We went for the last day of restaurant week so it $55 per person with the prixe fix menu and two drinks. The peach smash had a lil too much ice in it but it was good!
Gertrude's is consistent and ALWAYS FANTASTIC. Their service is great, dishes are ALWAYS tasty and my go to for business meetings. Fresh flowers at each table are always a nice touch💐🌹🌸
I dined at Gertrude’s during restaurant week and I could not have chosen a better time to go. I made a reservation, showed up 15 minutes early without my entire party and was seated immediately. While waiting on 2 guests the waiter served cocktails to those who were seated and the drinks were very good. I selected the wine pairing option on the prix fixe menu. Each dish and wine were excellent. Everyone at our table loved their meals and my dessert was so delicious I had to take extra time to savor it. I will be returning to try brunch soon.
Maybe the best meal I've had all year! Happened to be restaurant week. Starter salad was huge and the blueberries great. The rockfish imperial is about as "Baltimore" as you can get! Amazing. The upside-down warm peach cake took it over the top! Try this meal regardless of restaurant week or not. Maddy the waitress also excellent.
We had our reception at Gertrude's last weekend and it was perfect!! I highly recommend if you're looking for a venue to host an event! We were able to get beautiful photos down in the BMA gardens and had the cocktail hour in the sculpture garden and on the terrace. We did food stations so we got to select 3 different entrees along with 2 sides, and they were ALL DELICIOUS!!! The guests raved about the food! They could get whatever they wanted and go back for seconds and thirds. We had Angus beef with mushroom risotto and mosaic vegetables, fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans, and vegetable lasagna with a kale & sweet potato curry and greek salad. Guests were able to eat dinner either indoors or out on the terrace, and then we danced the night away on the terrace, where there was plenty of space! It was great because if anyone wanted to sit and chat in a quieter environment, they could just go back inside and sit by the bar or at one of the tables. The drinks were also very tasty! The servers were super attentive and Richard was wonderful and took great care of me and my husband throughout the night! Emily was fantastic! She coordinated everything and communicated with me throughout the planning process and during the event. Emily is super responsive, personable, and patient. She made everything so easy and answered all my questions in the months leading up to the reception. We couldn't have asked for a better coordinator or venue! The guests kept commenting on how beautiful it was and how much fun they had. We're so grateful that we found Gertrude's and that they were available on our date! Thank you to everyone for making our day so special!!
I hadn't been here for a while. Went here faith family for brunch. Spectacular. Great service. Great food. Plenty of baltimore favorites. I recommend sitting outside. Good view of the sculpture garden. Like a nice urban oasis. Always a good spot if your younger and need a place to take your parents. Everything was fresh. Tons of local dishes. And local themed dishes. Good mix of innovation and classic with the food. If your from out of town a great spot. Connected to the Baltimore Museum of Art and plenty of parking.
Bomb baby! This spot has been knocking our socks off for years. I haven’t been in ages and recently had the opportunity to go to lunch with my mother. The Tangy Asian Noodles are BOMB AF and the mussels soooo delicious. Loved the crunch and creaminess of the vegan crab cakes. The cauliflower bits were good too.
Stopped in for dinner after touring the Baltimore Museum of Art, and by my dumb luck it was Baltimore Restaurant Week! The catfish paddies, Rockfish Imperial, and candy bar mousse were all excellent, as were the wine pairings I paid extra for. Lovely location, lovely food, definite recommend.
I've always loved Getrude's. If you have a chance to go, you must try the shrimp 🍤 and grits. It's yummy and flavourful. Besides the good food, the scenery is great. Plus, it's next to the BMA, so you can go look at art after a nice meal.
Gertrude's has an excellent menu. The food is very fresh and high quality. Just outside of the restaurant is the BMA's sculpture garden and nice, contemporary fountain. Great atmosphere. It's a great location for banquets and weddings. The staff is very friendly and professional.
Best turkey burger EVER. Juicy, tasty, perfectly cooked. Good fries too. Nice ambiance. A bit loud for chatting with friends and server. Hot tea could be better quality. Already thinking about my next visit. My only picture is the outdoor area.
Gertrude's, the cafe at the Baltimore Museum of Art, is a very nice venue. My wife had a duck breast and avocado omelette which she enjoyed. I had what turned out to be a crab imperial pizza, also very tasty. We both had a cold tomato basil soup, excellent. The service was very good. The Baltimore Museum of Art is an excellent place to visit.
Went out for a day date in the city and wanted to start with brunch before going to the Baltimore Museum Of Art. Our service was very friendly and the mimosas OK, give me a second were on point. I wished I had taken pictures of our food as it was delicious.
Gertrude’s Chesapeake Kitchen is warm, welcoming, and full of flavor! The menu celebrates local ingredients with a modern twist — think fresh seafood, hearty dishes, and creative cocktails. Cozy, charming atmosphere with friendly staff makes it perfect for brunch, lunch, or a relaxed dinner.
Wonderful time at this spot last night. The cream of crab was delicious as it’s always been, the catfish fingers and cauliflower were great apps and of course great crab cake! Superior hospitality in a beautiful setting! Super Chef JOHN SHIELDS even came to our table to say hello!
Fine dining at a museum. What more could you ask for? The wait staff is very nice and the food is even better. They will customize any meal to your desire. The eggs Benedict and crab cakes are what you should go for if you’re hungry. Worth it!
Attended an event catered by Gertrude's. Loved the food and service! An eclectic mix of cuisines.. Gave 4 stars not because of taste but the food was really sinful😋
I’m giving this 5 stars for Eva having excellent customer service while I’m stressing out about anything you can think of for Valentine’s Day she helped me figure it out and times and information about the menu … appreciate her fr give her a raise ~ Lay
Went to a concert at BMA Myerhoff Auditorium and didn't want to be to far from the concert venue.I went online and checked out Gertrude's menu.My wife and I are not adventurous when it comes to food, the Gertrude's menu scared me but,we went anyway. The service was great our waitress Katia was pleasant and over came me calling her a wrong name. The food was great.
Beautiful restaurant located in an art museum. Did not have a reservation on a Sunday around noon, but we were able to eat at the bar. They offered a wonderful brunch selection, but I would recommend the special crab cake. It was delicious! Highly recommend. And the art museum was wonderful.
I went today for my birthday dinner and it was really nice. I love how they offer reservations online. The ambiance was something special. Seating can be a little crowded at times especially during the colder months. Food was delicious, I ate it so fast I didn't get a chance to take a picture lol. Drinks were good and strong; they are not stingy with alcohol. Items can be a little pricey but it's average compared to other restaurants . The staff is very friendly, patient, quick and accurate taking orders and I love how they don't rush you out the door. I would absolutely come back again. This place is a real gem. ❤️
Gertrude's is a Baltimore classic and staple. There is something for everyone on the menu. While Rockfish imperial is my favorite (possibly restaurant meal in Baltimore), other seafood dishes, low-key sandwiches, special events (follow their Instagram), and brunch are all superbly well done. Also, the restaurant is located within the BMA, which makes for a unique and exceptional dining experience. During the summer, you can even eat adjacent to the sculpture garden. If you are in North Baltimore, you absolutely should give Gertrude's a try and risk becoming a repeat customer.
Gertrude’s atmosphere is truly a gem from its stunning outdoor seating and sculpture garden and proximity to the museum. I had lunch at the bar and only had oysters and a few cocktails.
I had a really lovely lunch here with my good friend. We were having a small, belated celebration for his birthday and enjoyed our meal and the museum! I wanted something light and ordered the powerhouse sandwich. It was pretty good: the vegetables were fresh and crisp. The hummus on it was kind of plain but added a good texture. Fruit salad was like every other fruit salad (not a bad thing)! The Nutella crepe was HUGE! It was as long as my forearm and PACKED with almost pure chocolatey spread. The staff was kind enough to, without prompting, put a small, edible sign that said "Happy Birthday" in a fancy script onto the crepe! They said the signs are normally used if someone orders a cake or a sundae, but this was special :) The restaurant itself is gorgeous! We ate inside, but the outdoor patio/dining space, and the dining by the sculpture garden, is incredible. I highly recommend booking a reservation in advance or else you may have to wait and hope... Most people were in casual clothes, but there were groups in nicer attire like they just came from church or were celebrating a small family gathering. Overall I enjoyed my time here and would recommend Gertrude's for a nice brunch celebration, but maybe not for a staple eatery that I'll keep on regular rotation.
Delicious. After a nice museum tour, this is a perfect place to have lunch. Today’s gorgeous weather was perfect to sit outside. A glass of rosé with spinach salad is a good start. The Salmon and crab cake are super yummy. Peach upside down cake is a perfect way to close. We will return to Gertrude’s. Kiss, Olan
Gertrude's is an ideal restaurant for a special occasion dating experience! The ambiance in yhe restaurant is top notch. Very sophisticated. I My date and I tried the Oyster Po' Boy w/ fries, Rock Fish w/ asparagus, fudge sundae, GOAT cheesecake, and some sangria. It was all very tasty and fresh. The pricing was relatively steep, but, was considerably lower than other area restaurants. The service here was very good, as well. Would certainly recommend Gertrude's for a special occasion meal.
Mixed, but mostly good. The ambiance is very nice and classy. A jazz combo played in the background, which was a nice touch. The watermelon gazpacho pictured below was amazing, with almond slices to make it crunchy, minty taste, and a hint of spice. Oysters on the half shell quite good. The ravioli was excellent and almost as pretty as the soup. My crab cake was good--typical Maryland, nice, fresh lump crab, but the tartar sauce was typical and the French fries were a little hard. The slaw was tasty and a little spicy. The coffee was excellent. The wine by the glass was subpar, however, for this upscale of a restaurant. And the service was okay, but only that. I don't understand why restaurants so often don't refill your water glass. And she didn't tell us any specials. I felt we were a little rushed for the price. Not a cheap place. Overall, a fairly good experience.
The food was the best part. The staff seemed more focused on each other than the guests. It didn’t feel like high quality service and I thought a place like this would offer that. I sat at the bar near the kitchen; it was very loud and I was privy to some conversation I’d rather not hear. The bartenders were friendly and seemed to be the more experienced staff. The food made up for all of it. Everything tasted delicious.
We made a reservation on line and our table was ready when we got there. The food was amazing but the service was not. I watched many of the servers and all were lacking in table service. Our waiter forgot my soda, they didn’t give us bread, we sat there for about 15 minutes before we were able to order and they even had runners. It wasn’t a large establishment so I am assuming it was quality of their servers.
I really wanted to give Gertrude's a higher review. It is a nice clean sit-down restaurant, there is just nothing special or extra about it. Gertrude's is very conservative, from the coffee to food and the dining room. The food was nice, but it lacked any type of flavor or seasoning, which is good if you don't like a lot of seasoning or extra flavoring. It's definitely convenient being in the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Perfectly fine place to grab a bite whether you’re at the museum for a visit or wish to make a special event if it as a stand-alone restaurant. The martini I had was marvelous but the rest of the food was unmemorable. A crab cake that was good but surrounded by two tasteless sides: potato pieces that were far too large and some greens. The views of the sculpture garden when sitting outside are very lovely but you won’t walk away talking about the food: for better or worse.
It was my moms birthday and a friend recommended this place for brunch. It in the right wing of the Baltimore museum of Art. There is a tent attached to the main permanent building where we were seated. The tent looks a bit worn out and not the cleanest. The service was nice, the waitress was attentive and friendly, however, I asked a salad as a side instead of roasted potatoes but I was brought roasted potatoes. I asked for French toast as a dessert and a birthday “cake” for my mom. The French toast was brought at the same time as the main course. The food was not what we expected. It was more like a diner food, not a fine restaurant. Portions huge and almost cold, mom liked grilled chicken, my crab omelet was ok, stuffed French toast was the worst I’ve ever tried. The stuffing was too liquid and the toast was overcooked and was swimming in some liquid which was like a watery syrup. We will definitely not be back and I wouldn’t recommend this place.
Food was okey… maybe 3.5 starts but they forgot to add shrimp to the $28 sea food salad…. Female Manager ignored me and my friend at the hostess station and started talking to the hostess like we weren’t there. Or she thinks she is a teacher character that everyone has to listen to her…? Sad, when employees think the restaurant is about them…
Had a brunch reservation at noon and everything in theory should have been great. Unfortunately, we had poor service that limited our ability to fully enjoy the experience. We had to order drinks multiple times and never received some of them. The wrong order was brought out and we then had to wait 20 mins for the correct plate, and the grits meal was unappetizing. Our server came to our table maybe 4 times over the whole meal. I spoke to the management who apologized and took 50 percent off the meal but the whole experience ruined what should have been a fun girls brunch at a beautiful location. We will never return and caution others to experience the museum and grounds but dine elsewhere.
We were so excited to try this place and ended up super disappointed. It was cool that it was in the art museum and the service was great. Drinks were fine. Atmosphere wasn’t great, felt like a nursing home cafeteria with ambient lighting. The food was so mediocre. No flavor, no seasoning. Felt like nursing home dinner, at least that was consistent with the atmosphere. The salmon alla bella dish was a weird omelette thing, and the steak was dry.
I had a really bad crabcake at Gertrudes on Friday. It was the Gerties crabcake and it had a seasoning in it that did not belong in a crabcake. It was disappointing because the crabcake I had there before was pretty good. This one was awful 😖
Wanted to try a new spot with friends and were happy to give Gertrude’s ago. Our server was lovely, attentive, and friendly. But unfortunately the food wasn’t memorable. It was wildly expensive, dry, not a ton of flavor, snd outdated. It felt like there is a chef back there who has been sitting on their laurels for several years and are unwilling to give this cute spot a well deserved face lift. Why is there an egg on a piece of salmon? Is there a reason there was no sauce with the dry pork tenderloin which was hacked up with a dull knife and thrown on a plate? The saving grace were the collards and cream of crab soup, everything else we could have done without. And maybe make the plates a little more… pretty? Give Gertrude’s a lifeline! She deserves it.
a minute ago New This was my first time here on a friday night. Inside we found a restaurant that had a bar attached and we waited 25 minutes to order a drink at the carry out side of the bar to have for the violin show. I attempted to order my drink and the lady bar tender with a very nasty attitude said we are to busy to make that drink order something. else. She passed me the menu that had wine on it which i dont drink. I can see contents of the drink I wanted right in front of me on the liquor shelf which was only 2 parts... it was my first time here and im try to paint it as she was stressed and having a bad day but it ruined my experience
Overpriced and a waste of money. Avoid the Rockfish Imperial, it tastes like cafeteria food. I could get better catfish bites from Hip Hop Fish and Chicken. Their signature crab cakes have an absurd amount of shell bits. The best part were the cocktails so I could drink to forget the atrocious meal. Go if you have a gift card and can eat for free I guess.
We chose this restaurant to celebrate after our wedding and were extremely disappointed. When making the reservation, I specified how important this dinner was to us and our family. We sat unattended for over 15 minutes, and I (the bride) eventually had to walk to the host stand myself so she could find our waiter, which took several more minutes. I want to note the restaurant was nearly empty; regardless, there is no excuse for this carelessness and apathy. The service never improved. The waiter was inattentive, dismissive, lacked knowledge of the menu, and the food was underwhelming; for the price point and reputation, this was completely unacceptable. I want to note that the manager took our complaint seriously, which was appreciated. That being said, the overall experience fell far short of basic hospitality, and this is coming from someone who worked front of house for almost a decade. If this is how a wedding celebration is handled, I cannot imagine the experience for regular guests. We will not be returning.
Pretty disappointed with the food and service. We had hoped for a good experience and was looking forward to trying the food. Our waiter took awhile to come to us and after ordering, he mentioned that the food was put in late, and when the food came out it was cold. Our chicken was still pink and food was cold. The manager was nice and offered to make the experience better, we decided it was not worth the time since they had closed the kitchen and understand it’ll be more of an inconvenience for the staffs, overall food was not worth the hype
We wanted to try something different in Baltimore and chose this restaurant given how long it has been around. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from start to finish. Parking was inconvenient and far from the restaurant. The menu felt dated and uncreative, and the food itself was underwhelming and lacked flavor. Nothing we ordered stood out in a positive way. Service didn’t help the situation. Our waiter appeared disengaged and uninterested, as if he would rather be anywhere else. To make matters worse, after about an hour we were approached by the hostess and told we needed to leave because they needed the table. While I understand the need to turn tables, we were not lingering or staying an unreasonable amount of time, and the way it was handled felt abrupt and unwelcoming. Baltimore has a handful of solid lunch options, but this is not one of them. We won’t be returning and cannot recommend it.
