Opinions de Japonessa Sushi Cocina - Bellevue Bellevue
I went here by myself and sat at the sushi counter. I got the salmon tartare, the spicy Seattle roll, the side salad, and the sushi deluxe set A. Salmon tartare - not bad. The mango wasn't as ripe as I would hope it to be, and the tomatoes were a bit lost in the sauce. However, the avocado and salmon were perfectly fresh and very good with the sauce. Spicy Seattle roll - the spicy is just spicy mayo put on top of the basic roll. If I had known, I would've ordered it without. The base roll was very good - the tobiko was a well balanced flip to the typical Alaska roll. Salmon was very fresh. The roll also was very large, well worth the price. The sushi deluxe set A - the eel was amazing. It melted in your mouth. That set was worth the eel alone. The other fish were also good and fresh. The salmon was perfect. The side salad was good. It wasn't ice burg lettuce with the carrot ginger dressing on top, which was a pleasant surprise considering how cheap it was. The service was good. Everyone was polite. I really appreciated the sushi chef, his skill was great. My only complaint was that I felt a bit ignored/forgotten by my server. I was happy the sushi chef was able to hand things directly to me, it made it faster. All in all, it was a nice time and good sushi. I would come back if I was ever in Bellevue again.
Omakase is incredible, chefs and staff are super friendly and made me feel at home
My wife and I love going on sushi dates at Japonessa when we can. This is a newer branch compared to the one in Downtown Seattle but the taste is consistent to the other branch. Aside from their great food, the place has a really nice casual but swanky ambiance. You must go to their happy hour and try their skin on skin and Seattle rolls!
My wife and I arrived for an early lunch Saturday, June 3rd. She had seafood sushi and I had sukiyaki beef with veggies and clear noodles in soup. First we had mixed tempura and after we had soufflé cheesecake with blueberry sauce. The food and service were both excellent. My soup was really a comfort food with tasty beef. The broth of her seafood udon was something special, really a culinary creation. YUM! That describes the super-light cheesecake as well, something unique! I am not a huge fan of tempura, but this dish was a learn-to-love experience. The light, crunchy breaded coating was delicious and the mysteries it hid were too, okra, sweet potato, mushroom, shrimp, etc. The servers were cordial, personable and quick. The atmosphere was too noisy for me, music was too loud. At least there was not a roaring crowd as in the downtown location. We were seated in the bar with a big-enough table and plenty of space for comfort and privacy. We were surprised to have such a treat of a luncheon with dessert for only $58.00. Parking in the basement of Lincoln Square was free all day. What a gift! This experience will draw us back from our home in the Admiral District. We habitually go to Southcenter, but this is actually closer and much, much nicer. Thank you, Japonessa. UPDATE 10/28/2023 Another satisfying lunch at Japonessa, with a different dessert this time. We again ordered the tempura veggies, quick to arrive and delicious. The food all seems so healthy! My wife had green tea while I pined for coffee. It's not a staple of Asian dining, LOL. We ordered 4 pieces of maguro sushi, plain rice and plain ahi tuna. My wife had mixed some wasabi into the soy sauce and unfortunately I got too much both times. The saltiness overpowered the tuna and rice tastes. We love that seafood udon! For dessert we enjoyed macadamia chocolate mousse cake. Yummy! The hostess, busser, and our server Tiffanie were attentive and friendly. We arrived before noon and the restaurant was not too crowded. The check came in at about sixty dollars, which seemed just about right for this high quality food, atmosphere and hospitality. We'll go again no doubt!
My sister was really craving sushi on her visit home from college, so we made a reservation at Japonessa. It was super easy to reserve a table, and when we got to the restaurant, we were seated instantly. The restaurant had cute holiday decor, but I was really put off by how gross the bathrooms were. When I told my parents, they were shocked because of how nice the restaurant was and when my mom went to the bathroom she was absolutely disgusted when she came back. At least the food was good. We ordered the shrimp gyoza to start and practically inhaled it. It was so savoury and we were so hungry. My parents loved the sauce that came with it. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and my mom loved the umami flavour. For our drinks, I recommended A Fire in the Sun to my dad, and he was obsessed with the spice of the jalapeno tequila. He usually orders a margarita, but this was a drink intriguing enough for him to step outside his comfort zone, and he loved it. I got the Butterfly Effect for myself and I loved the floral flavour of the empress gin and the aroma of fresh lavender. My sister tried out the non-alcoholic Be Gone Evil Spirits and my family had an appropriate laugh at the name. I couldn't try her drink because it had mango in it, but it smelled delicious and was the most enchanting tropical colour. She said it was delicious and my dad agreed. It looked good enough that I was jealous. We picked out The Union, the Super Bad Boy and the Spicy Seattle rolls to share. I loved The Union; I just wasn't a huge fan of the tuna on top, the slimy texture is a total no-go for my palette. That also ruled out the Spicy Seattle for me, but my sister loved both rolls! Salmon is her absolute favourite. The Super Bad Boy was also delicious once I took out the avocado. My dad isn't a sushi lover so he ordered the Chicken Teriyaki with a side of white rice. I stole a little from him and the chicken was tender and flavourful. I loved the sweet sauce and the way it paired perfectly with the fluffy white rice. Sometimes the chicken was a little difficult to bite into, but overall it was delicious and I loved it. Our server Jeremis was super friendly and welcoming. He brought us lychee ice cream to celebrate my birthday early and it was absolutely incredible. We wouldn't have ordered ice cream if he hadn't brought it to us, but my mom was in love with the sweet, refreshing flavour. We really appreciated Jeremis for getting us to try something new, we'll definitely order the ice cream next time we visit. Along with that I ordered the Hazlenut Brownie Bar, and my sister ordered the Strawberry Mochi Cake. I loved the wafer texture of the Brownie Bar and the rich chocolatey cake. It was definitely a very heavy, dense dessert though and close to the end of it, I thought I was going to explode. My sister's cake was pretty good, I loved the strawberry cream and the mochi dough, I just wasn't a huge fan of the coconut shavings on top. We'll definitely have to come back soon, the sushi and the drinks were delicious.
Came here for lunch on a friend’s recommendation and it did not disappoint! The sushi was fresh and the service was top notch. We got seated in the bar area and it’s apparently happy hour all day until 5:30pm which is awesome! I got the crispy rolls and California rolls which were both made fresh and fast. My friend got the calamari which was nice and crispy and came on a bed of salad. The price is amazing for how much food you get for a restaurant in Bellevue. Free parking is also validated for 2hrs in the Lincoln Square south garages. Located on the 1st floor right across from Nordstrom Rack.
Wow. That's all I can say. Everything we ordered here was amazing. The rockstar and the union sushi rolls were great. The wings were good but not the best. The short ribs were exquisite. The food arrived shortly after ordering. The service was great. The place wasn't as formal as I expected. You could probably get away with a casual outfit. Will definitely be coming back.
What a fun Sushi fusion spot in the Bellevue mall. The specialty rolls are seriously spicy and delicious! And the a la carte sashimi - while pricey - is at least generously portioned and so very fresh. Good service. Good hot sake. Buzzy date spot.
You really have two options here: spend big or spend smart. The smartest way to enjoy this place is either by getting the chef's choice Omakase or ordering from the happy hour menu. Regular rolls are around $20+ each, which is excessive for just eight pieces. Sushi rolls in the U.S. often cater to those who don’t eat raw sashimi and are usually overpriced. Instead, try the Omakase—it’s beautifully presented, high quality, and you get nearly 50 pieces. If that’s too much, grab a seat at the bar where happy hour pricing is available all day. You can get solid rolls for under $10+ during happy hour. My personal favorites are the Omakase and the spicy tuna roll or sushi set A from the happy hour menu. Cleanliness: Pass Service: Pass Vibe: Pass Taste & Flavor: Pass Revisit intention: Yes
We love the sushi here and how they have a unique take on Japanese concept with hints of latin flavors on sushi. We usually come for happy hour for best prices on sushi rolls and drinks. Favorite rolls are Super Bad Boy, Seattle Crunch, The Legend, Mexican Ninja, Sweet Seduction, Seattle Roll and Shrimp Tempura. Overall great sushi and friendly staff, they have good flavors.
Great happy hour sushi place at Lincoln Square. Prices are affordable, and happy hour menu portions were very reasonable. Their food was amazing, staff were attentive and very courteous, and we had a great time. If anything, please order their calamari. It was great, huge portion and very tasty!
Japonessa is a Mexican and Japanese infusion restaurant, with their main start being sushi. This one is located in Bellevue in the mall, pretty easy to get to if you know your way around. It gets busy here very often, so I'd recommend having a reservation, especially for a larger party. Their menu is quite large, with many options for sushi but also some other sides and mains as well. The service here is always great, rolls are made quickly and there's always staff walking around. Prices are good for Bellevue, especially with the size of the rolls. Overall, it's a great dinner spot for date nights or just hang outs. It's also family friendly, kids allowed.
One of the better sushi spots in town with actual delicious rolls AND sashimi. I’m a roll girl, the super bad boy here is one of my all time favorites. The food is consistent and they’re always adding new rolls to the menu. The omakase here is also high quality without breaking the bank. If you like traditional omakase, I highly recommend sitting at the chefs counter. Chef David is fantastic. Our server Suki is also wonderful! She is super attentive and warm! We’ve had her twice now! It’s not often in Washington state that you have a server who actually makes conversation with you vs just serve you.
Good date spot especially after a movie on the 3rd floor. This place is located ground floor, busy but not crazy on Friday night at 9pm. Bluefin sampler is super good deal, 6 large slices of bluefin, akami/chutoro/otoro. Server and sushi chef were really accommodating to cut the sashimi in half for us because the slices were THICK, like 1" cube of otoro is a huge fatty mouthful. Pair with a bulbasor roll, garlic damage, miso soups and a touched salmon roll. Super tasty. Bulbasor roll was the favorite, great recomme nation by our server/bartender Suki!
Tasty sushi. Reasonable prices. Foods quality is great. Services were amazing. Clean facilities located inside Nordstrom shopping center.
There is no other place to get sushi. Just wow… the tasty quality of the fish, unbeatable happy hour prices, and the timely professional service. The music is perfect, not too loud, and the right energy level. I got the calamari, which was very generously portioned served on a bed of a crunchy palate cleansing salad. I also got the sashimi set which did not disappoint. Highly recommend for dates, business meetings, and anytime you want to impress your dining companions.
This is my favorite sushi restaurant. I'm really happy with the wide variety of options they have. I've visited this place multiple times, and everything I've ordered so far has been delicious
Here's my honest review: ✨Location✨ Tucked away near the mall ✨Price✨ Happy hour prices are absolutely amazing ✨Ambiance✨ It gives an elegant omakase vibe ✨Drinks✨ We loved all the Happy Hour drinks ✨Recommendation✨ I would totally recommend going before 530 on a weekday so you can capture the happy hour costs while it's fairly empty. The salmon karage tacos were absolutely amazing. I also adored the Super Bad Boy and the Mexican Ninja. But we didn't like the Wicked Sensatio. It was bland despite the jalopeno lime sauce. ✨Customer Service✨ The waitress was super attentive and came back frequently to check in
Definitely order the matador roll - it’s like surf and turf and delicious! Spicy ninja roll was also awesome. The Brie bites paired so well with the raspberry sauce. And the pork belly tacos were flavorful!
Japonessa never misses! The dragon rolls were torched just right — crispy edges, tender eel, sweet glaze, total flavor bomb. That spicy baked roll? Melt-in-your-mouth goodness with creamy, bold sauce. And the sashimi platter was insane — thick, fresh cuts of salmon, tuna, and scallop that tasted like they came straight off the boat. This is my go-to when I’m craving sushi that feels fancy but comforting. 10/10 would order again.
I was craving Sushi 🍣 from sometime now. It finally ended with my friend giving a treat for his new car. Absolutely loved this spot - just so good. I haven't tasted anything like the ultimate dragon. Don't get discouraged by seeing Eel - it's absolutely a blast. Other sushi rolls we tried was Emperor's roll, Spicy Seattle and Green Decadence. Emperor's roll to me was an eclectic collection of different combinations of shrimp, crab meet, avocado etc. The atmosphere feels definitely upscale and the service is super quick. The cuisines are presentable and you are NOT leaving from here disappointed.
Japonessa Sushi Cocina is a great place. I’ve visited many times with my family, and I always enjoy it. The staff is friendly, the location is convenient, the prices are fair, and the food is always fresh and delicious. The menu has a wide variety of options, which makes it easy to find something for everyone. I’m always happy with my experience there.
delicious fresh sushi, went during happy hour both prices and our tummies were so happy!!
Came 15 minutes before last seating at 8pm on Christmas eve. The host was not welcoming, gives a little bit of attitude even though I was just asking "Are you still open?" Because I understand it's Christmas eve, but if you don't want customers just say so. Since we were hungry, we decided to come in anyway trying to forget his attitude. Luckily, our waitress was friendly and nice! Food came out quicker than we thought, which was great cos like I said we were hungry! We ordered tuna tataki, fried calamari, street fighter 2 roll, seafood udon, and sukiyaki beef. All were wonderfully seasoned! Both udon and sukiyaki broth were soothing, perfect for cold winter night. Calamari was served a lot more than I thought but it was awesome! Tuna tataki and street fighter roll were great! All in all, great experience with the food and service from the waitress. She made sure that we placed our last order before they closed off the kitchen. Also ordered a squirt but it did not taste like squirt at all, luckily they were able to get 7up that tasted like 7up. It was nice to see that the staff were taking pictures together and having fun even though they had to work on Christmas Eve. We appreciate you! We recommend coming here if you're looking for japanese food in Bellevue area. It wasn't cheap, but worth the price! Thank you friendly waitress!
I have been coming to this place for a long time and it is amazing. Always fast service, polite and friendly staff who go above and beyond. I also want to add that I have been trying to find a Lion King baked roll for a while, Japonessa does not bake rolls, but you can add things. I finally got one, it was delicious. Thank you so much! :)
We had a really good experience in this japonessa , I ordered the seattle crunch and shrimp tempura and noodles. All of them were freshly made and top quality. We also went to japonessa in downtown and the waitress in downtown was very rude. But the staff here were really friendly and welcoming and they tended to our needs on time. I cant wait to come back to this place to try more sushi and have a nice time. Keep it up
After walking around the town center I decided to stop here for a small bite and a cocktail. The frequent flyer was their version of a paper plane. Quite tasty and will definitely be ordering again. The Toro sampler was quite enjoyable. The salmon Toro was surprisingly my favorite typically tuna is my go to. This was extra buttery and incredibly tender. I sat at the bar and service was fantastic. Great recommendations, and easy going. Place wasn't too crowded, hopefully it gets busier. Would like to try some of their rolls and other fusion items. They were doing a ton of to go orders! The accompanying items on the sushi plate were quite tasty. Especially the seaweed salad.
Overall, I would give this place a 4.75-star rating. We had a great time celebrating my nephew's 19th birthday here. The host was incredibly welcoming and friendly. The restaurant is spacious and cozy, with a nice vibe in the bar area. The service at the front and bar was excellent and friendly. Although the service in the dining room was a bit slow, the food was delicious, I especially enjoyed the scallops dish. The bartender's drinks were skillfully made and delightful. They offer validated parking, but note that hot sauce costs an additional $0.50, and there's a $15 cake cutting fee if you bring your own cake. Overall, it is a highly recommended experience with just a few minor points to consider.
Food delivery and service is fast and efficient. The rolls and sashimi were delicious. Sashimi came in good size cuts of fish (generous portions). Rolls were great and had a combination of flavors and textures. Restaurant is comfortable and welcoming place to have sushi with friends and family.... Recommended
I’ve been to Japonessa a few times now and it never disappoints. The sushi is always fresh and beautifully presented, and they have such a fun mix of traditional rolls with a Latin twist that you don’t really find anywhere else. The service was fast and friendly even though the restaurant was busy, and our server checked in just the right amount without being overbearing. I especially recommend the Super Bad Boy Roll and the jalapeño yellowtail sashimi—both were amazing. The cocktails are also really good (the spicy margarita was a favorite). The vibe inside is lively but still comfortable enough to sit and enjoy a long meal. Prices are fair for the quality, and portions are generous. Definitely one of the best sushi spots in Bellevue. Can’t wait to come back!
I’ve had consistently wonderful experiences here and Leo at the reception is a standout. When I pick up to-go orders he is always kind and makes the process so smooth. They also pack their to go food in non plastic boxes which I appreciate.
This place is good but seems to try too hard. The food is all very tasty, albeit a little over the top in regards to the decorations, especially the sushi rolls. Prices are a little steep, with a roll averaging $20~. The rolls ARE good sized though. Pro-tip: drop in during happy hour. Service was decent: my personal experience was kinda ehhh. Upon arriving it seemed the front desk girl was more interested in small talk with some lady than to check in the line of people at the entrance.
On my first night in Seattle, i tried this place’s late night happy hour (9pm to close) i had a chirashi bowl and a yuzus margarita. The fish was extremely fresh which is critical to a dish like this. I did think the pieces themselves were a bit bulky. The dish was well executed i would order it again. The drinks were tasty but a bit on the not strong side. The service was friendly and my food came quickly. What more could you ask for !!
Sushi Cocina offers a fun fusion vibe with a creative menu that mixes traditional sushi with bold, modern flavors. The rolls were fresh and well put together, though a few felt slightly over-sauced. The ambiance is lively and works well for a casual night out. Service was attentive, but timing could be a bit inconsistent when the place gets busy. Overall, it’s a good choice if you’re looking to try something a little different without expecting a high-end sushi experience.
They were very accommodating of our big group size, though we didn’t have a prior reservation. We liked the ambiance and service. Server was patient, friendly and professional. Took their time to walk us through the menu and was helpful with processing the multiple cards we presented. Work dinners 🤷🏾♂️
Japonessa Sushi Cocina offers a lively and contemporary dining experience, blending traditional Japanese sushi with a creative Latin fusion twist. The restaurant boasts an extensive menu featuring both specialty and traditional rolls, with each dish showcasing fresh, high-quality fish that's delightful in flavor and presentation. Whether you're in the mood for classic nigiri or adventurous fusion rolls, there's something to satisfy every sushi lover's palate. The service is friendly and attentive, ensuring that guests feel welcomed and well taken care of. However, due to its popularity, Japonessa can often be crowded and loud, making it a great choice for group get-togethers with friends or family, but not the best spot for a quiet meal. The vibrant atmosphere, complete with a full bar, adds to the energy of the place, making it an ideal venue for a fun night out. In addition to the sushi, the restaurant’s cooked Japanese fare offers a variety of flavorful options, complementing the sushi menu perfectly. Overall, Japonessa Sushi Cocina is a must-visit for those seeking a dynamic dining experience with a fusion of flavors. With its fresh fish, inventive rolls, and great service, it’s a perfect spot for casual gatherings and enjoying creative sushi in a stylish setting.
Good sushi, decent happy hour. Staff looked tired and l little stressed out. Maybe is not in general but at least on our visit the server looked like she wanted to do her job as quick a possible and be done with it. She was kind though. Super casual and laidback ambience.
TLDR = 4-star experience and food for 5-star prices It's a good restaurant. They have good food, drinks, service, ambience, location. We ordered multiple rolls of sushi, veggie tempura, and drinks (mostly lychee martini). We ordered some vegeterian / vegan rolls as well and they were delicious. Overall a good dining experience. We didn't find anything out-of-the-world or stellar though. Everything was reasonably good. The prices, however, exceeded the service and food. We were a group of 6 people sharing the food family style, and paid a total price of 65$ per person. And it's not like we ate or drank a lot. Expected better service and food at this price point.
Large portions/not the freshest fish: we ordered the calamari appetizer, galbi ribs, and the chirashi bowl. The calamari portion size was large, but it was drenched in a really sweet sauce that was a bit overpowering. The ribs were okay (a bit chewy). I was disappointed in the chirashi bowl. The sashimi was definitely not fresh. There was something in there that was super fishy and I couldn’t finish the bowl. If you go, I recommend you try the non seafood dishes.
The food was ok. Our expectations were higher for this restaurant. We ordered multiple dishes and the best was the raw fish. I guess when you have been to Japan it spoils it:)
My husband and I had our first date here, so this place has always been special to us. We make a point to come back for anniversaries and occasional date nights. Unfortunately, during a late-night visit this evening, we experienced particularly poor service from Suki. Based on other recent reviews, this does not appear to be an isolated incident. We were made to feel as though our order wasn’t worth the effort due to its small size and the perceived “complexity” of our drink request. I ordered an NA spirit with soda and instead received an entirely different drink. Any interaction after the initial order was placed was met with a dismissive and unprofessional demeanor. This experience was disappointing, especially given our long-standing affection for this place. We hope management takes this feedback seriously, as service like this can easily overshadow what was once a meaningful and enjoyable spot for us. For the record, we still left a healthy 30% tip because how you treat people matters, regardless.
Sashimi and sushi platter was good. Beautiful presentation and quality fish. Service was very strange. Not one hello and zero eye contact from either of the two servers we interacted with. The only thing they both made eye contact with was their handheld POS system. It was all just laughably awkward.
Solid sushi spot with a mexican vibe. This would be more of a regular happy hour destination, but if you're looking for more of a high end sushi experience maybe somewhere else will fit the bill. Clean restrooms. Staff is quick to attend to you with no attitude. Good for the price. An average experience and that's just fine 🤙
Friendly staff. Food was ok. The fish had a mushy texture and broke apart easily, and the rice was also leaning towards the mushy side. I didn’t enjoy the sunomono; had an off smell, cucumber wasn't crisp, and was served warm.
You get chain quality food here. It's not terrible but it's definitely not authentic or particularly fresh. Our sashimi was a bit deteriorated, possibly from defrosting incorrectly. My udon soup had way too much MSG. The ginger chicken was very greasy. On the positive, the service was friendly and fast.
I discovered a fly inside the glass containing the soy sauce. The glass arrived already covered, so the insect had to be inside before serving. When I informed the server, they brushed it off saying it “comes from outside.” I didn’t argue, but the dismissive response and the cleanliness concern were disappointing. I’ve enjoyed the Seattle branch before, but this Bellevue location makes me hesitate to return.
Ordered through Grubhub. Driver sat at the restaurant for 40+ minutes - but that is forgivable. What is not forgivable is my wife choking on a huge piece of plastic paper that was wrapped inside her avocado roll. Won't be ordering from this place ever again.
Truly not sure why this place has good reviews. Ordered 3 sushi rolls, they were all okay but none that I would say were good or worth the price. Not fresh whatsoever. Had 2 flights— the sushi wines were terrible and so were the white wines. Only stomached 1 glass. On top of that, the bar/kitchen staff were extremely loud the entire time laughing and banging kitchenware to the point I couldn’t enjoy a conversation with my partner. The staff kept eyeing our table throughout our whole meal waiting for us to leave so they could clear our dishes and go home. Really awful experience for a night out & could never recommend. I appreciated that the manager refunded one of the wine flights but I will not be returning.
Entitled waiter and bad service ruined our date night. My wife and I been loyal customers of the Seattle location for more than a decade, but our experience at the Bellevue location was unacceptable. From the start, we waited an excessive amount of time just to be acknowledged. After ordering, our table was consistently neglected, no check-ins, empty drinks and water, and I had to repeatedly flag down other staff members (not our assigned waiter) just to get refills and place an additional order. Our food took an unusually long time, and we watched several tables seated after us receive their meals, eat, and leave before we were served. When the food finally arrived, it was disappointing. The hot food came out lukewarm to cold, which strongly suggested it had been sitting for some time. Combined with the long delay, this significantly impacted the quality of the meal. The payment interaction was also inappropriate. The waiter hovered while I entered my card and tip, which was uncomfortable. Despite the poor service, I still left a $10 tip. The waiter reacted unprofessionally by rolling his eyes, grabbing the card reader, and walking away mid-sentence. Because of this behavior, we asked the manager to refund the tip. The waiter later walked by smirking, which only reinforced the lack of professionalism. This experience points to clear service and accountability issues that need to be addressed. We’re sharing this so management is aware and future guests aren’t treated the same way.
Food was great , atmosphere is good too . Went two days in a row , first server was amazing . Second server not at all , apparently suki will catch a huge attitude if she feel’s as your tip isn’t enough . We also had a tip charged included for ordering it to go without any notice . While we were sitting down still . We could have just ordered it to dine in and box it ourselves if they were going to add a tip without notice . Unfortunate because the place is really nice but can’t say the same for the server.
