Great quality fish. Chefs are really Japanese so I have good hope in this place and wasn’t disappointed. They also have daily recommended for fresh fish from Tokyo Fish Market. Space a little cramp like they open only half-section of restaurant but overall I enjoyed this place and will definitely recommend. Picture is Assorted Tempura
I've tried out a few sushi places around here and this one is the best by a margin.
Fantastic food, solid price, will be going back soon
Sashimi and sushi craving satisfied 🤩
Perfect when you want really great sushi, but don't want to give up a right lung just to have a taste. My husband's go-to spot; he's never disappointed and finds everything consistently awesome.
Great local sushi place. They fly fish in directly from Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan (previously from Tsukiji), and post whatever is fresh and delicious to the Specials board each day. The sushi chefs take extra care with the special fish to create interesting and inventive sushi. The owner, Robert, is a warm and welcoming host.
The Japanese food was fresh and very yummy. The salmon sushimi was the best I've ever had at a Japanese restaurant. Fresh sweet and firm. The Is mix tempura was Krispy, hot I'm very fresh.
Unfailing courteous and delicious. Their sushi, especially tuna is delicious and well prepared. My favorite is the Negi Toro tuna roll. I make a point to order from here at least once a month.
This is my favorite sushi place. The fish is great, especially the daily fresh specials (from Japan). The service is friendly and non-intrusive. Prices are very reasonable for the quality.
Every neighborhood would be lucky to have a local sushi restaurant as good as this. The menu is a bit heavy on novelty rolls, but the quality is high, and there is a rotating offering of fresh seasonal options for nigiri. There are also entree options, inclyding solid ramen, but the best option in my mind is a mixture of simple and complex rolls, some seasonal nigiri, and a frosted mug of Sapporo.
Absolutely the best Katsu I've had in years! So delicious! The workers were actually Japanese and it tasted very authentic.
Fantastic sushi in one of Rockridge's hidden gems. Not many people know that Mitama gets fresh sushi from the Tsukiji Fish Market in Japan. Absolutely fresh fish and amazing lunch specials. I can't help but love the Rainbow Roll and the Amberjack fresh sashimi pieces. Plus, if you like sake, Mitama definitely has a wide selection that I'm sure you'll enjoy.
Best Japanese food in the East Bay, in my opinion. Everything on the menu is delicious, and the husband-and-wife team that owns and operates Mitama works very hard to maintain the highest standard of quality. Our experience eating here is consistently superb.
My favorite local sushi place! Everyone is always so kind. The service is great! You can’t go wrong on the menu. I love getting the Omikase
Soooo good! Everything was fresh and delicious. I was so bummed that uzen closed but now I have my new spot!
Super good food. Great costumer service and it has a very cute vibe.
Outstanding, authentic Japanese food and friendly staff in a charming, cozy setting.
This place overall great. The sushi was super fresh and everything tasted great. You can tell it’s the real deal. The place was such a good vibe too. Not too bright, homey and cute. And of course the service was perfect. They were friendly and attentive, not pushy. They kept our waters filled and gave great suggestions about the fresh catch of the day. Oh and the chilled and unfiltered sake was amazing! Totally hit the spot on a hot Berkeley day!
I live nearby and hit up Mitama any time I'm craving sushi or a comforting bowl of udon. The food is consistently great, the staff is friendly, and the vibe inside is that of a snug but cozy and inviting sushi bar. Highly recommend.
Decent sized sushi, friendly staff, and seating was almost immediate.
The sushi here is really first rate. Ask what’s best - everything is always good but they’ll tell you what’s just come in from Tokyo or what’s most wonderful, and their specials are nothing like what you’ve bought in a box from a regular sushi place. For a splurge, get the omakase dinner - it’s the chef’s choice sushi special plate, really. Una-jyu was also spectacular. writing this, I want it all over again!
One of the best sushi restaurants in the Bay Area. Fish is very fresh, tasty and high quality. Ramen is excellent, but the weather has gotten a bit warm for this. Unaju remains one of my favorites. Even the tempura is quite good. Service was excellent, but I can see how they could get caught short during busy hours. I recommend without reservation (no pun intended)
I am a bit biased here (I know the owner), but I do recommend this place on its own merits. Their miso-katsu pork and their sushi/sashimi are awesome. They have variety as well, to please every palate. My two picky kids ate their fill, much more than usual, which is a big win for me! And I really appreciate that their miso soup is not an after-thought; it's tasty with tofu and seaweed inside, but not overly salty.
I had the ramen a few weeks ago, and it was pretty good, but I had it again tonight and it was just spot-on. Egg cooked perfectly, nice broth. Definitely my go-to spot now.
I'm so happy I found this place! The fish is So So fresh. I tried the salmon bento box (amazing tempura - coming from someone who don't enjoy fried food) and the noodle & rice combo (salmon teriyaki and sweet tofu with udon) the soup was a delight, it was flavourful and delicate just like I imagine the food in Japan to be.
Favorite neighborhood sushi. Lovely people who run it, excellent Sake and Sake Salmon! 😊
This place has great sushi and very kind staff. My favorite item is their salad dressing, which is randomly unique. It's not creamy but a Japanese style vinaigrette. I also love their Katsu. Park on the rooftop of Safeway nextdoor. Definitely try the tuna sashimi and the beef short ribs. Currently they are doing take out and it's very reliable. No outdoor dining.
It may look like an average neighborhood sushi restaurant, but they actually serve well made and generous portions of very high quality fish. One of the better sushi options in the area!
Probably one of the best sushi places I have ever visited in the Bay. I'm taking out a star because the wait was way TOO long. We ordered 2 miso soups, 2 rolls, and some nigiris. It took more than 40 minutes to arrive, and everything came at different times, which is disappointing if you want to enjoy the dishes together. I will come back, but definitely not on weekends.
The hot noodle is really good. What makes it good is the broth. They make the broth with bonito flakes, mackerel, and kelp daily. So it is really tasty. Thanks he rolls are alright. They have a new chef making them so it was taking a very long time to make (45 min). I’ll come back for the hot noodle.
Omakase was decent and ramen soup was tasty. Could have better ramen noodles but overall good experience. That ramen pepper is epic. Kaki fry definitely a good crunch and suffiently sized oysters.
Great service, lunch specials and sushi
The food is delicious. Not a super fancy atmosphere, but it doesn't need to be for you to enjoy their food. The menu is not expansive in items, but definitely adequate with Japanese restaurant staples. I think they are sometimes slightly understaffed, because there are often times several empty tables and still people waiting at the door to get seated while waiters clear tables instead of seating the customers first. So! Go here for a low key and delicious Japanese meal! Things to get (I always do): both the tempura and unagi udons, kaki fry (FRIED OYSTERS!!!), unajyu, agedashi tofu. The chirashi is pretty decent, too. Not big on rolls as my personal preference is sushi or sashimi, but the rolls I've tried were pretty good, too.
We really liked sushi and sashimi here. Super fresh. Miso soup and beer served here were great too!
Food was good, but service was slow. They gave us some complementary edamame (without us saying anything) when they realized we had been waiting. But they forgot my beer, so it was a mixed bag.
Mitama's food is pretty good, but the price and the service make it hard to recommend over the numerous other great Japanese options around Berkeley. It's a little higher-end than, say, Manpuku just down the road, so expect less college students and a slightly older crowd.
Food is very good but the restaurant isn't pretty inside, doesn't create an atmosphere, the tables are very close to each other. Small place.
Love to sit at the sushi bar. Super fresh fish. Decent selection of rolls. Lots of options for non fish eaters as well.
There was a long wait to get in but we dont mind waiting for good quality food. We got two sushi rolls, an appetizer and a bowl of miso soup. The soup was okay, not great and frankly overpriced at $4 per bowl. The rolls were excellent, though a bit small. Not overly saucy which we appreciated. The waiter, young guy, kept forgetting things. I had to stand up and walk over to the sushi chef to ask for water and later for some teriyaki sauce. Our appetizer came after we had already finished all our rolls which was disappointing. We got the chicken karrage which was okay but again not great. It was under seasoned hence the need for teriyaki sauce.
This location is great for people watching - there are tons of windows, and during the day you can get some warm sunlight as well. I've met friends here for both lunch and dinner, and I usually order the vegetarian bento box. The food is good, portion size works well for me, and their prices are great as well.
Food is 5 Stars. Kitchen was late in serving one of our side dishes, it came out when we were paying the check. We thought they had forgotten it, I guess we thought they would have told us it would be so late. Overall they are wonderful. Just keep track of your order.
The food is delicious and the staff are friendly. Ramen and nigiri are both quite good - and full of flavor. Get a reservation if you're more than two people. They can suddenly get very busy!
I will try this place again but was not in love for my first visit It took quite a long time to get acknowledged, then seated, then order, then receive food (this was longest), then pay. I'm okay with a reasonable wait but this was a bit grueling. The negi hama and saba rolls were fine, but not good.
The food was good, but service was lacking. We had a party of 3 with reservations. We were seated immediately (it was half full on Monday), but it took 60 minutes to get our sushi, and they forgot my ramen. Maybe just an off day, but it was disappointing.
A customer driven restaurant. The bathroom is romantically fine. The street reflects a hygienic problem. The staff murmurs to themselves. Food taste not fresh enough. Across the street the pruner was making money. A new pruner attended the summer festival.
Upon my first visit to this establishment, I ordered the Miso ramen and Salmon toro. While the Sake toro was satisfactory, the ramen did not meet my expectations, and I would rate it a 2 out of 5. Overall, I found nothing particularly special about this place.
Went here the other day after trying it once and really liking it. But the second time I ordered pork bento bowl and a container of miso soup, Which costed me about 30 dollars. I was pretty upset with the price but went home and looked at the food. The miso container was particularly open and spilled in my backpack and the pork bento box was bland and the meat was very pink. I called and asked for a full refund. When I went back into the restaurant I asked for the refund and they looked at me like Just committed a crime. I’m pretty disappointed with this place.
Almost $80 for terrible service and mediocre inauthentic Japanese food. Three of us were there for weekend dinner. The place was practically empty, maybe due to cold rainy weather. The service was so slow. Ordered two tonkatsu entrees, a mid-priced roll and standard California roll. After almost 30min, I had to ask what was taking so long. They said it just finish and brought it. It came lukewarm. Tonkatsu is fried pork. How can something be lukewarm when it just finish frying. The seaweed wrapping on our rolls were also somewhat chewy, which meant it sat long enough for moisture to take affect. No one came to check on us. We had to ask for tea cups to be refilled every time. When it came time to pay, I even had to ask for my card back to sign.
Unfortunately I got very sick after ordering Chirashi here last night. I eat sushi all the time and can’t remember a time I got food poisoning from it but it definitely happened last night after eating here. I’ve wondered if sometimes chefs try to “use up” old fish for chirashi that people don’t order often. One piece was off in texture and taste but I ate it anyways. I’m very disappointed because I live down the street and love sushi, but I won’t be back and don’t recommend going here due to quality control.
We had to wait for 45 minutes to get sushi. The restaurant was doing a lot of takeaway orders and prioritised that over dine-in customers (that's the excuse given). Extremely disappointed that a quick bite turned into such a long frustrating evening.
