Opinions de The Sur House Restaurant Big Sur
The Sur House offers an extraordinary dining experience with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The food is fresh, locally sourced, and expertly prepared — their seafood dishes are a standout. The ambiance is refined yet relaxed, and the service is impeccable. Perfect for a special night out in Big Sur.
New manager in food area. They are getting bean counter cheap... Not a good thing for the price. Bring back happy hour with the drinnk with the bubble. That as an utterly foolish move to remove. Put the pool table back in the check in place. Up nearthe kitchen is not wise fir enabling folks getting together. Keep the Stone Post and Flower vibe. This aint New York. Honor Big Sur. Still very nice. The people are fabulous but handcuffed by new management dumb rules on what they can no longer provide freely.
Delicious food (except for the lack of salt). Dinner is a tasting menu only and you can order even if not staying at the resort. Service at the bar counter was spectacular.
In the summer season, the seatings are on the outdoor patio facing the Pacific Ocean. On a sunny day, the views are stunning. Even on a cloudy day, the view of the mountains is majestic. It's located facing South so sunset isn't in your eyes either. The staff are incredible and the 22% gratuity is included with the room, so that's convenient. However, the food is unremarkable. It's decent, but eating here three meals a day for more than a day will get unbearable. In contrast, the Valley Kitchen at the nearby Carmel Valley Ranch does a better job at highlighting local ingredients with a wider variety of selection.
Simply amazing. We stayed at the Alila property and dined here every day, 3 meals a day. The staff is hands down one of the kindest and most sincere groups I’ve encountered. They truly make you feel so welcomed and go above and beyond. Alfredo— you are a treasure! As are the many others we got to know every day. The location is to die for. Absolutely gorgeous 360 views. Wonderful ambiance, gentle breezes and stunning sunsets. Lastly, the food the incredible. We did not have a bad meal on any occasion. The cuisine is creative and very delicious. The are extremely accommodating with any dietary restrictions. We cannot say enough good things about this establishment!
Rating is for the vibe and service. Unfortunately, didn’t get to eat here but stopped in for a quick glass of wine ahead of my dinner reservation at a nearby spot. A beautiful, cozy, lux-decor feel restaurant and bar, with a fireplace. Delicious truffle cashews served with your drink at the bar. Dinner was a pre-fixe only (no a la carte) but would have loved to try something otherwise.
Breakfast here was pricey for sure. Not something we normally care about but the food was a little cold almost as if it were pre-made or it was cooked and waiting to be delivered. The eggs and sausage were dry. Service was friendly but very slow to greet after sitting (with a reservation). The service assistant was on point with coffee and water top off. The morning view was obstructed by the June gloom(not the restaurants fault) so we came back for a cocktail 🍸 in the late afternoon. The view was just wow. The bar service was far vetter and our cocktails were delicious. Would 100% go back for an evening drink and view under the stars!
We’d recently eaten brunch, but went out for afternoon cocktails. Had guacamole and chips to snack on (they were great), but overall, amazing drinks, amazing service, the view is something better than amazing; I’ve not yet found a word for it. The Marine Layer, is a refreshing drink, with a show. Please get one. Please. I’m so excited for you.
Chilling and letting me surprise on top of Big Sur! We got an amazing view, weather, food, ingredients, playlist music, design and recognizable service, well behave pets allowed, destination approved! Wow. This place is something. You come here for the view. Just outstanding. Kitchen is also very good, much better than any place around. Definitely worth it. Service might be better but c’mon after view and kitchen that is not a breaker. I wonder why Michelin skip this place. Really at par with some famous restaurants.
¡¡¡ WOW !!! I mean a big WOW. The Sur House is situated on the side of a mountain overlooking the ocean. The food was superb. Delicious combinations of flavorful ingredients, perfectly prepared, and beautiful presentation. The place is california elegant, which means to me that the accommodations are beautifully designed, architecturally appealing, classy, but you can come as you are. I can't wait to go back! The photo shows the view from my table.
Highly recommend. I have never seen such hard working, professional and friendly staff. I was impressed by how every single person greeted us with smile and courtesy. The heater was more than enough and the staff brought us blankets. Food was excellent too, and yes you pay for the view of course. We had a great time!
During our stay at the Alila Ventana Big Sur, we were treated to a culinary journey at the Sur House that left us utterly impressed. The all-inclusive meals provided a delightful assortment of options, with lunch and dinner being the highlights of our dining experience. For lunch, we savored an array of delectable dishes, including the flavorful fish tacos, zesty chicken tortilla soup, mouthwatering mango habanero wings, a satisfying chicken sandwich, and a succulent churrasco. Each dish was a testament to the chef's expertise and attention to flavor and quality. As for dinner, we were treated to a feast for the senses. The perfectly prepared rack of lamb, the delightful pasta, and the succulent steak left us thoroughly satisfied. Every bite was a testament to the culinary mastery on display at the Sur House. The attentive and friendly customer service further enhanced our dining experience, and the incredible view of Big Sur's natural beauty added an extra layer of magic to our meals. In conclusion, the Sur House at Alila Ventana Big Sur is a culinary gem that offers a perfect marriage of exceptional cuisine and awe-inspiring vistas. Whether you're a guest at the resort or a visitor to the area, dining at the Sur House promises an unforgettable experience. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire team at the Sur House for a dining experience that far exceeded our expectations. We eagerly anticipate our next visit to indulge in more of the mouthwatering offerings and to bask in the mesmerizing views. Five stars without a doubt!
I was looking for a place with an incredible view that also allowed my fur baby. The Sur House was perfect! We were seated outside upon arrival and got to take in breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding areas from the top! The servers were extremely professional and courteous. As soon as we were seated, they brought over a water blow for my pup. We did make reservations in advance. When we initially arrived, it wasn't as crowded, but it did get busy shortly after. Plenty of onsite parking and delicious drinks as well.
Food overall was very good, especially brunch was very yummy. I just didn’t give it 5 stars because the fish for dinner was a bit dry and the filet mignon for dinner was burned on the outside, ordered it to be cooked Medium.
Visited Ventana in 2021, then again in 2025. The first time we went, the food was not impressive. It was included with the price of admission, so that was at least worth something. It seems like they've leveled up their game in the past 4 years. This is actually a restaurant that I would visit and pay good money for. The food is still included in the room rate, but it doesn't feel like an afterthought anymore.
I had a wonderful lunch at The Sur House even after waiting 20 minutes for a table. The atmosphere is lovely—sun-soaked, cozy, and roomy. Although some didn’t like the food (Gulf Shrimp roll was a miss), my cioppino was perfectly seasoned, hearty, and full of fresh seafood. I sopped up every last drop of the soup with the bread, and even more using a side of fries! Quince cheesecake was a bright finish to a beautiful meal. We sat out on the Terrance that had breathtaking view of Big Sur. Would love to return to the restaurant and stay at the hotel next time.
Wonderful food and great service! When we were here, Sur House was the place that served all the meals, including lunches. Breakfast: lox and bagels, chia seed, Ventana breakfast are good Lunch: guac and chips, grilled chicken sandwich, churrasco 👍 Dinner: we enjoyed Santa Barbara prawns, day boat scallops, duck breast, garganelli pasta
Ate dinner here twice during a stay at Ventana. Upscale experience with incredible views and attentive service. Didn’t have a single course of a meal that was bad either night. Spanish octopus and steak were cooked to perfection. Would like to recognize Juan for his amazing service and for making our experience memorable. I didn’t get the other staff’s names, but they were great as well.
Amazing location and classy/cozy ambiance. Staff was incredibly friendly and quick to serve. We ordered a seasoned old fashioned and a mango cart beer to start, both delicious. For food we ordered the cheeseburger and fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was fried just right and the burger was super juicy with plenty of pickles. The view alone is worth going for a visit. The restraunt is perched several hundred feet up from the coast (not on a cliff if you're afraid if heights) and has an expansive view of the surrounding coastline. The restaurant interior is primarily wood with cozy seating and a nearby fireplace. A wonderful place to enjoy a lazy afternoon.
This is our first time in a all inclusive resort in the stars, and let me tell you this is a good or better than Mexico resorts, the food was just amazing the service is top notch, from the minute we got in the property is nothing but the best service I had in a hotel. The views are amazing love California
What a wonderful experience! From the greeting we received from Sophia, the personal time and attention from each of the supporting staff, the unique creations from the kitchen, and the exceptional service we received from Juan, all of it contributed to one of the best culinary experiences we have ever had.
Delicious prix fixe meal overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Service was excellent for dinner and we did make a reservation. We tried lunch as well on a Sunday but less enthused since most of the menu items that we were interested in were sold out. Then again it was 1 hour from closing time for lunch after a busy weekend. Pictures shown are from dinner. Simplifying menu...homemade bread and pickled veggies, tomato burrata, crab and pasta, foie gras and waffle, duck and figs, steak, bourbon caramel chocolate mousse, plum cake.
We had the whole menu during our 5 night stay. Service was always excellent. Highlights for food were all the salads, olive oil cake, soups, waffles, yogurt bowl, risotto.
The view during the day was absolutely stunning. We went back for lunch the next day. We ate dinner and had the braised short rib, cavatelli, New York strip, and Pork Loin. It was the best central coast wine menu ever seen. You should pick a St. Lucia Pinot though. Dinner was cooked to perfection and all around the 4 course meal was to die for.
Located on the property of the Alila Ventana Big Sur at the top of the hill, the Sur House has the most unbelievable views that we have ever seen at any restaurant. It was foggy at Big Sur today, and the views of Pacific Ocean while while we were having lunch were still memorizing! The food and service were outstanding as well. This is an adults only property, but kids can visit during lunch service. In any event, the Sur House is a bucket list restaurant experience, a must try if you're in striking distance of it!
Lovely visit for dinner at The Sur House. We were not staying there, just came to celebrate our anniversary. First, Richard was the perfect server. Very friendly and welcoming with great suggestions. Attentive, but not over-bearing. Ocean view for sunset was amazing! Though fog covered the ocean we were above it and sunset still stunning! We had the eggplant carpaccio- a lot of arugula stuffed in a thin slice of eggplant rolled. And the scallops, I think three thin slices in a creamy sauce. The scallops were delicate and delicious. The eggplant seemed almost like a salad with the amount of greens, tasty, but I love eggplant and wanted more of that flavor to dominate which it did not. I got the bistecca (steak) and hubs got the duck leg. Both tender and flavorful. We were satiated, but not stuffed. We requested to have our dessert by the fire, and Richard suggested we partake in the complimentary s'mores by the fireplace. Highly recommend. Of note quite a few dogs, not a nuisance, but if you have one, apparently welcome.
It's a little bit off of Highway 1 and you won't get there just by chance. Went there due to a personal recommendation. It's one of the nicest, most beautiful places I've ever been for lunch. The view on the ocean is spectacular, the food is really good and the staff is very nice. Was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me!
We came here for New Year’s Eve dinner since not many choices around here. The service is very good. We got here earlier due to rain, and chilled by the bar first. They have mocktail too. Dinner is 3 course meal. It was really good. However for some reason, our waiter might forget our order so our second meal came very slow, and he apologized for it and gave us free drinks. That was very sweet of him. Love the service and would def come back again, there was also nice patio as well. Will come back for sunny day ! Also the SPA is amazing here too.
Not only is dinner fabulous but our server Ramiro made our experience even more memorable. He made great recommendations and was very attentive. Just incredible service all around. We went back for breakfast the next morning, breakfast options were delicious but service not as great as dinners. Nevertheless, we will be back!🫠
We had an awesome experience at Sur House, it was good we had a reservation because it was packed! Gorgeous sunny day, fortunately most tables are shaded. Our server Angel was fantastic, we were celebrating my fiancé’s 30th and they really did it big. We were blown away by the quality of special service and truly appreciated it. Fish tacos were delicious, along with the side salad. Our cocktails were perfect, unique and familiar all at the same time, well balanced. They brought a big birthday dessert platter that was amazing! Such a highlight to the end of the meal. I can’t wait to come back and bring our families, what a gem of a place!
Sur House is now our go to stop on Christmas Day and we look forward to it every year. It never disappoints. The service is friendly and fast, the views are drop dead gorgeous, and the food is amazing. Alila is a beautiful hotel as well so the atmosphere is bar none. We got the orange cinnamon roll (a special), a few different breakfast plates, and drinks, and we loved all of them. Truly our favorite Christmas tradition.
the view is very good and food was delicious. they have a fireplace that not only smells great but also people can make smore there. the mussel soup is so good and that’s from someone who doesn’t eat seafood. the service is very good! the drink with a bubble on top tastes like soap water to us. they took the drink back with no questions asked and gave us a fat old fashioned instead. if you stay at the resort, the food is included but the alcohol isnt. there’s a trail that brings you from and back to the resort, but i think you can also call a golf cart to take you too.
This place was wonderful in every way. Given the location and exceptional service, worth every penny. Every detail was perfect. Waters and coffee stayed filled. Kind attentive waitress. The food was superb. I got the vegan just egg frittata and my husband had the falafel Benedict. We both got blood orange mimosas. Everything was delicious!
I had a wonderful meal here Sunday morning! The food was amazing, the cocktail was great and the view was stunning. Due to the heat they have been having problems with bees so I was unable to sit outside, however I asked for a table by the window and got it! My server, was very slow, but the kid who was running the food was great! All in all a fantastic experience to start my day!
Sur House at Alila Ventana Big Sur delivered one of the most unforgettable dining experiences we’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this place is something special. The setting alone is worth the visit-perched high above the Big Sur coastline, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding forest. It’s the kind of location that makes you pause and just take it all in. We dined there multiple times during our stay, and each meal felt like an event. In the morning, breakfast was served overlooking the cliffs as the fog and marine layer rolled in gently from the sea. It was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely breathtaking. By the evening, the sunset transformed the entire landscape into a warm, glowing canvas of colors. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while enjoying an incredible meal was truly unforgettable. The food was phenomenal. The campanelle pasta was a highlight-perfectly al dente, with a rich, savory sauce that brought everything together beautifully. The rib eye was one of the best steaks I’ve had anywhere-juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Every bite was memorable. Even the bread and small bites leading up to the main course were thoughtfully prepared and delicious. The pizzas were probably the weakest part of the menu, but even then they were still very good-just outshined by everything else. Service was top notch. Every member of the team was warm, welcoming, and attentive without ever being overbearing. They anticipated what we needed before we even asked, and made us feel completely at home. The overall atmosphere was relaxed and elegant, with just the right amount of refinement. Sur House isn’t just a restaurant-it’s an experience. It captures the essence of Big Sur: natural beauty, thoughtful hospitality, and extraordinary food. Whether you’re staying at Alila Ventana or simply passing through the coast, this place is absolutely worth a visit. One of our favorite meals in California, and a place we can’t wait to return to.
Went here from alila, it was one of the most incredible meals from recent memory. The best salad I’ve had, then some crazy egg dish with popcorn that also blew my mind. Both entrees were executed perfectly, and dessert and service were all stellar.
What not to love about this restaurant? AMAZING views, Awesome staff, Delicious foods and GREAT service. I have nothing, BUT positive reviews for this resort, restaurant and staff. All the staff has done a beautiful job to accommodate and to provide the best quality and world-class experience to all guests. I definitely will return again. Many thanks to the bartenders, chefs and servers for being flexible and patient to provide us with great dishes / drinks / services. We greatly appreciate your artistic ability, dedication and hardwork to please your customers!!
My three days staying at Alila Ventana Big Sur have been one of the best three days of my life, and the Sur House is a big reason why. We came here every single day for our complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner as hotel guests. I believe that breakfast and lunch are for hotel guests only but Sur House is open for non-hotel guests for dinner time. Even if you are not staying at Alila, the Sur House is still worth the trek if you’re in Big Sur. The dining here is world class and I was told that the chef is actually from the Michelin restaurant nearby. Every single thing we ate was extraordinarily delicious, and believe me, we tried the whole menu during our stay! Below are some of my favorite selections from the menu for each meal. BREAKFAST — Bagel & Lox (colorful and IG worthy) — Egg Omelet (with fresh eggs from the onsite farm) LUNCH — Habanero wings (perfectly spiced) — Fish & Chips (fantastic fry, not too oily) — Churrasco (this steak is actually my favorite dish of our whole stay) — Market Fish (ours was a beautifully cooked salmon) — Coconut sorbet (DO NOT SKIP THIS!) DINNER — The Hen Egg (sounds simple but has big flavor) — Spanish Octopus (soooo tender) — Squid Ink Spaghetti (but honestly all the pastas are amazing) — Steak, Salmon or Halibut (are the best because for me the poultry options were a bit dry) All the desserts are great and we’ve tried them all, but I just cannot stop thinking about the coconut sorbet. It lives in my mind rent free. Not only was the food excellent, the service was equally as amazing. Our server for most nights was Leo - he is fantastic. He always remembered our names and what we ordered and made sure to wish me a happy birthday. We really felt taken care of and seen. On nice days and nights, Sur House is located in a patio area of Alila Ventana and overlooks the huge blue ocean and Big Sur cliffs. It’s a really stunning sight especially at sunset. On days with very foggy or rainy weather, the party is moved indoors for a more romantic, cozy, wood surroundings dining vibe. I will be dreaming about Alila Ventana and the Sur House for a long time!
What a beautiful restaurant! We ate here three times total for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For dinner, it took quite awhile to get our main entree. Without us complaining or even bringing it up, our waiter proactively checked on us and offered us a free drink for the delay. The other two meals were great. The location is perfect, snd the views are stunning.
We were guests a few nights at the hotel and I was very impressed with everything I tried. The menu was very creative & they had some fantastic options for breakfast, lunch & dinner. There wasn't a meal that I didn't enjoy. I think my overall favorite was the chicken hash for breakfast, beautifully spicy & delicious. Service was top notch as well. Felt like a 5 star experience. Highly recommend this place regardless of whether you are staying at the resort. (I've attached a million pics of the various breakfast, lunch & dinners).
Ate here for dinner 3 times while staying for 3 nights at the resort. Overall it was a fantastic experience every time. Attentive waiters, delicious food, good portion sizes and variety. Some of the highlights over the 3 days include for appetizers: King Salmon and Grilled Prawns are a must-get option. Extremely flavorful, delicate, light and delicious. For entrees: Beef Ribeye, Sable fish, King Salmon (normally not offered but was in place of Sable Fish one night due to availability). Chose to get the beef with a side salad (Harvest of Lettuce) rather than the suggested sides. All the proteins were cooked to absolute perfection every single time. Harvest of lettuce salad was shockingly good and a great pairing with the steak. You cannot go wrong with any of the dessert options, every single one was fantastic. We had the same friendly server all 3 nights. The quality of the food being served here is much higher than the in-suite dining options for the same menu items.
Didn't expect a free in-house restaurant to be so good, to be honest. Had a total of 8 or 9 meals at this place and was satisfied with almost every dish that I ate. My favorite was the U10 scallop and the minute I bit into it, I knew this would likely be one of my favorite foods of 2024. As a matter of fact, I ordered it 3 times during my stay lol. Also enjoyed fresh and well-seasoned salmon, iron steak and crab cake. The view also adds significantly to the taste. Reservation is recommended but actually not required for resort guests. The short trail from the resort to the restaurant is pretty scenic and fun to walk.

My wife and decided to dine at Ventana’s Sur House while visiting Big Sur. We started with a cocktail at the bar - drinks were good, bar staff friendly, and environment fun and enjoyable. For $110 each, we received a three course prixe fix meal. I also opted for the $85 wine pairing while my wife decided on a single glass, a Napa Valley Plumpjack Merlot. My wife selected the baby greens salad while i selected the tuna crudo for our first course. She enjoyed the salad and I thought the tuna crudo was delicious. We decided on a white crisp Sauvignon Blanc which was perfect. My wife selected the scallops on a bed of risotto with a side of brussel sprouts. I selected the 10 oz beef filet ordered med rare that came with scalloped potatoes and a side of puréed garlic potatoes. I ordered a Napa Valley Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon to pair. We always share our food. I thought the scallops were perfection - the best thing I tasted all evening. The risotto was so-so as were the brussel sprouts. My filet mignon was disappointing. It tasted like it was previously frozen and although perhaps technically med rare it was too cooked for me. The puréed potatoes were so-so but the scalloped potatoes were amazing. For dessert I had a caramel Apple cheesecake which was very good paired with an exquisite Yquem Sauternes. My wife ordered the “tiramishroom”. This was an artistic take on tiramisu in the form of a mushroom. It was indeed beautiful but not all that tasty. We had Richard as our waiter who was excellent! Can’t say enough good about him - he helped make our evening more enjoyable. The setting and views are exceptional. Would we go back? No. Are we glad we went? Yes. Do I recommend? If you don’t mind spending +$400 on a meal I’d say go for it.
Waiter got our orders wrong. Bees all over our faces. He didn't really check up on us even though it wasn't busy yet. We couldn't enjoy our meal. Hope your experience is better than ours. We will not try again.
We enjoyed a sunny yet chilly day having lunch at this beautiful restaurant. The service was excellent. Our servers made us feel welcomed. The views are amazing. The setting is romantic yet laidback. They would definitely get a five star if the food menu and taste was equally good. Unfortunately the tacos had no flavor and the burger was dry despite ordering medium.
All meals were included during our stay at Alila Ventana, and many dishes were both flavorful and creative. I particularly loved the hen egg appetizer and the sablefish main course at dinner. For lunch, we enjoyed the guacamole and chips, habanero chicken wings, fish and chips, and coconut ice cream. The service was fantastic, and the patio offered a stunning view that made the experience even more memorable!
We were here as part of our stay at the Alila Ventana resort. Overall, the food was a bit of a mixed bag. We stayed for two nights and had three lunches. The breakfast was good, the lunch excellent, and the dinner was honestly a bit disappointing. Everything we had during lunch was really well prepared, we tried essentially the whole menu. For the dinner, it seemed like they tried too hard to be fancy. Ingredient quality was just okay, too many flavors, preparation was subpar. I'd recommend focusing on simplifying it and just going for excellent quality and taste. The free drink during social hour was fun, but unless you really love lavender, you might consider asking them to omit that flavoring. Made the drink much more enjoyable for me at least! The view from the patio is, of course, amazing. The servers and staff were all wonderful.
Outdoors at Sur House is always a lovely atmosphere and the service tends to be pretty good. On past visits the food was much better. When I visited in late November 2025 for a three night stay with three dinners, dinner prep had really gone off a cliff. I feel like there isn’t the same skill or oversight as experienced on past visits. The ricotta pasta dish was a complete inedible salt bomb, the halibut fish of the day was the size of a brick and tasted like one, the artichoke heart appetizer was overcooked, tough, and barely edible. The breakfasts were simple and well executed with some nice choices. Lunch was also generally good although I would steer away from the new Mexican themed menu at the pool. It fell pretty flat and bland for me.
We ate here over our two night stay at Alila Ventana Big Sur. Every meal was very good with unique combinations of delicious food. The view was a bit disappointing as it rained the whole time so we didn't really get to see much other than gray clouds. Our big complaint was that even though the meals and gratuity are included with the stay, they try pressuring you into a bigger tip by leaving a bill for $0 at the end.
Sur House is gorgeous. It was easy to get reservations. The views are A+++. There are fire pits outside but if it’s cold, it’s cold. There’s a nice bar and fireplace inside. The servers are helpful and attentive. The menu has a nice spread of options but it’s all pretty Big Sur expensive. The food was good, not amazing.
Perfect views on a beautiful end of winter morning. Great atmosphere. Wait staff are very accommodating. Need to book and be prepared for a little wait. Food, good however my avo on toast a little bit over seasoned too much lemon and salt for an Aussie palette. Definitely worth the stop for breakfast on a road trip south.
Tough to rate this but scored down due to $$$ compared to portions. First off, the property is beautiful and we ate here at guests at the hotel which is marvelous ! My only complaint is for $110 per person (if ordering not as part of the inclusive resort booking) the dishes are not up to par/ not perfect. The egg appetizer was a strange consistency. The beet salad I enjoyed but wish there was more blood orange to balance out the beets. The steak was lovely and service was impeccable. Drinks were average (not as balanced as my palate would have liked) but beautiful presentation. Desserts were delicious and a perfect portion (I hate large dessert dishes) The atmosphere and scenery is definitely unbeatable especially during sunset ! All in all worth a visit for a one of a kind view for Big Sur lovers ! But the food did not match or exceed our expectations.

The music they play loudly is an affront to what should be a beautiful dining experience with stunning views of the Big Sur coastline. No one should be subjected to Lumineers covers of the Cure while staying at a five star resort that focuses on nature. The music is a definite choice and it ruined every meal. Who wants to watch the fog roll over the coast while listening to Ironic by Alanis Morissette? The food can be very good to OK. Some of the people operating the espresso machine at breakfast are clearly not that well trained.
The pasta for the ragu was mushy. The sauce tasted like underseasoned tomatoe paste. I think there were canned red peppers that had been soaked in some vinegar. Whatever it was, there is way too much. I had a poached eggs appetizer with prosciutto and possibly polenta. That was pretty good and worth ordering Passion fruit dessert is pretty bad. Service was very good. From a value perspective, its less hit and more miss.
Perched on a hillside overlooking the pacific (if clouds clear) and the hills, the location makes the whole visit worthwhile. But under current ownership I was disappointed with the food. There was a sign saying there's an organic garden on the property but my salad greens looked like the standard spring mix we buy at Costco. Sandwich with "fennel slaw" had very minimal fennel and an ordinary white bun. Falafel was hard and very salty. Garlic potatoes were on point. Also, the piped in music was overly loud considering the location is about absorbing nature.
THIS IS A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND OPTION I had a dinner at the Sur House. Atmosphere 5/5 One of the best pacific panoramic view in the Big Sur. Service (servers) 5/5 We forgot to ask the name of the server. However, he is a tall guy with gray hair. He is ver gentle and friendly. He made a great conversation with us which made us feel really amazing. The food and drinks that he recommended are all phenomenal. Foods (4/5) Respect your elder - well balanced cocktailed with amazing garnished. Taste like Negroni & old fashioned. A method of a cloak - A rich floral cocktail which represents all the flowers in Alila Ventana Big Sur. Hen Egg - This is the must (period) Steak - a bit overcooked but the quality is great. We deducted score from this one. Duck - 10/10. That is. Manager 0/5 We had a reservation at 8 pm and we arrived on time. We were asked to wait at the couch. Then, It was past 8 pm. we noticed there was another couple checking in after us. That couple was waiting at the couch too. Then, that couple was seated. I was wondering why. So, I asked the host at the check in counter. The answer I got is "They booked at different time slots". Here is what I have been thinking. 1. How does Sur House prioritize late guests over on time guests? 2. Or they just forget to seat us and try to find a good excuse? Nevermind, I do not want to ruin the night. So, we got seated a few seconds later. We got the second row seats. And we notice that there is another table leaving where we would like to move there. The manager came to talk to us and apologize about the check in process. We accepted it. Then, we asked to move to that table. The manager said that the table will be taken care of by another server who is already overloaded. Food and services will be delayed. Me: So, you would not seat anyone there, wouldn't you? The manager: No, we will not seat anyone for a while. Me: Can we move there to enjoy the view and take photos while waiting for food? The manager: If you sit there, we will need to sanitize all again. Oh my goodness, this is blowing my mind. I do not want to deal with this person anymore. I do not want to ruin the atmosphere and the night. How long will it take to sanitize? You don't even seat anyone. This makes me feel like being *RACISM* of being an Asian. I really do not want to feel this way since this is a very high end restaurant where many international travellers visit. This is really unfortunate. She made me feel that way. Furthermore!!! Next 10-15 minutes, that table got seated and they even received all the food and services and left the table before us. I really beg Alila Ventana Big Sur and The Sur House to take the action seriously. This should not occur again to any other guest or anyone. I hope my message reaches the management and they will arrange a proper training to their staff, especially managers level who handles the customer issues. I still love and would like to revisit Alila. Hopefully these will get solved.
A very pretty place, overlooking the Pacific Ocean - it‘s an elevated location secluded by forest. The tables at the front are limited :) so, be patient or come a bit later. I did not enjoy any food but it looked very well prepared, with the utmost diligence. Where is your coffee gone, though? I enjoyed two coffees; the taste of the coffee itself is very accommodating. What I did not enjoy was the amount of coffee you actually receive. I mentioned it to one of the waiters and she kind of understood what I meant before I said it … In detail, my two orders: 1. Cappucino: there was about 1/5 of the cup filled with coffee, the rest was the egg foam; yeah, I really like egg foam BUT I also like to have some coffee with it, please 2. Latte: strange enough, there was egg foam on it again, although less … hmm, a Latte with egg foam? Anyway, the amount of coffee was slightly better (1/3 of the cup) but still way on the low end of what you usually get in other high end places. Could you please serve some decent coffee if you already charge 8 USD per coffee? I think its not too much to ask …
Sur house is best if you would like great service paired with amazing ambiance and views. Food wise they are average for the price point. Very limited vegetarian options and the ones that exist are passable. Our server and waitress were great and very transparent about the large tip that's prefixed and added to the bill.

Pros: We were welcomed in with beautiful views on an open patio overlooking the pacific ocean. We enjoyed the sunset and took a few great photos. The service was expedient with our waitress arriving to take drink orders. Our table was bussed efficiently. Cons: The food was, at best, mediocre - especially, when compared to other nearby restaurants offering similar meals at less than half the price. This was true amongst our 4 varied appetizers, main courses, and desserts. We received no offers for a second drink and sat with empty glasses of assorted cocktails and wine for the second half of our evening. Despite this, a mandatory 22% gratuity was charged without clear disclosure and without opportunity to review the service provided - seems more like a house tax to me. To top it off, a cat wandered around us the entire evening without attention from the staff. It seemed ininterested in socializing and eventually demonstrated its true intentions by stealing a piece of chicken off the plate of a neighboring guest. I can't blame the cat - it's behaving as nature intended. In the larger picture of a $170/ person lackluster meal, however, it was icing absent from a relatively dry cake.
Food was okay and the staffs were nice. But it’s not the most hygienic restaurant I’ve been to.. considering it markets itself as high end. There were flies everywhere… some on my dishes (we were sitting indoor). After I told the staff about it they didn’t take any action but was giving the “yea we know and we kinda need to live with it” type of vibe.
My husband and I booked The Sur House for our first wedding anniversary dinner, hoping for a special, memorable experience. While our server was kind and the view was undeniably beautiful, that's unfortunately where the positives ended. Several guests around us were celebrating occasions and were acknowledged with a small dessert or kind gesture. Despite mentioning our anniversary when we booked and again during dinner, we received no recognition at all. I also spent the entire evening freezing — other guests were offered blankets, but I had to get up and request one from the hostess stand myself. I have a few dietary restrictions, and after a thoughtful conversation with our server — who assured me they could adapt anything — I requested a pasta dish with scallops, mushrooms (which I was especially excited for), and a wine sauce with no cheese. Instead, I received scallops drowning in marinara sauce, topped with sour cherry tomatoes, peas, and brussels sprouts. It was not only unappetizing but nothing like what we had discussed. Our server, who had been kind earlier in the evening, seemed to disengage by this point and didn’t acknowledge that the dish bore no resemblance to what we had talked through. It felt like he chose not to notice, which only added to the frustration. Dessert was another letdown. I ordered the vegan custard, only to be served a barely-there layer of custard over a chalky, unidentifiable puff. It was neither enjoyable nor thoughtfully prepared. The halibut — while plated beautifully — was shockingly bland. Overall, the food was tasteless, the service lacked cohesion, and the effort to accommodate dietary needs felt lazy and dismissive. Visiting from out of state, we put a lot of time, thought, and money into planning this trip. We could have celebrated anywhere in the world and chose The Sur House — only to walk away feeling utterly disappointed and emotionally deflated. I left wanting to cry. As patrons, we don’t get a “do-over.” We don’t have the luxury of giving you a second chance to “get it right next time.” For many of us, there is no next time — especially when it comes to once-in-a-lifetime moments. And yet, we were left to suffer through a lackluster, overpriced meal that was utterly disconnected from our expectations and the reputation this place promotes.
I am truly sadden by the changes made to the menu with the new chef. For five years, my best friend and I visited Sur House every three to four months. He flies in from Chicago. I come in from San Diego. This restaurant used to be a highlight of our trip. We will not be back after the last visit. The new chef has completely changed the menu and the prices are utterly outrageous now. They've tried to make it fancy and are failing miserably and price gouging customers in the process. They charged almost $40 for a grain bowl with chicken on it. Completely absurd. I ordered a falafel benedict that was over $30 and it arrived with two burned falafels. The eggs were at least cooked decently but the falafels were inedible. Although the setting is beautiful it is not enough to justify bad food, mediocre service and price gouging customers. As mentioned, we won't be back.
Just got out of having a Valentine’s Dinner Pre Fixed Menu, and I am waiting to get a meal at In and Out, because we were so underwhelmed with the portion sizes that left us so hungry. It was like a Michelin Star dinner where they only serve you 2 small items instead of 8. The drive there was stunning during sunset, the staff was friendly and super attentive. They accommodate us after arriving a bit late. Nice ambiance, but the food, although good and elegant was not enough. They charged a 22% surcharge for Valentine’s Day meal, which made for an extremely expensive dinner for the food. I have no issues paying for a luxurious meal and experience, as long as I can walk away satisfied. I suggest you make the drive during sunset and pack a picnic dinner to have from your car!
We were told that it wasn't open to the general public right when we arrived. There was no sign anywhere that would hint at that. We had waited for it to open at 5 pm and were starving. I hope no one ever has this degrading experience.
I came here for my birthday, and I should've stayed at Post Ranch Inn where we were staying for the weekend. The service at this restaurant is so, so, so believably slow. I'm shocked. Our reservation was at 5:45pm, and from the start we knew we made a mistake. We had to wait to get seated despite many open tables, and server seemed like someone from another part of the hotel who got roped in to cover for our original server who went missing. When we asked for recommendations, he read off the menu for us. We flagged a waiter to order and our cold chicken and squid ink pasta came an hour later. When our entree came, the server asked if we wanted hot sauce. He never came and we finished our cold entrees. We never got asked if we wanted more drinks despite multiple servers walking around seeing our empty drink glasses. When our server came back asking if we wanted desserts, he obviously forgot about the hot sauce. The only employees who were good were the ones filling our water. Skip and just go to Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn. The service is so slow here that I am writing my review as we wait for the check. Nothing for birthday.
I hope this review helps future guests be mindful of menu items without posted prices. My husband and I visited for lunch on Christmas Day and ordered the short rib sandwich, Moroccan shakshouka, and the holiday special cinnamon rolls. The food was enjoyable overall, and the staff was attentive and friendly. The only disappointment was the cinnamon rolls, which did not have a listed price on the menu. We assumed they would be around $16~$26, but it was $50 charge for three small cinnamon rolls. We don’t think it was a reasonable price because it was far more than a single entree!
For a resort that averages $3000 a night, you can get better food and service at your local Chick-Fil-A. We chose this restaurant for my birthday lunch, but please do yourself a favor and go ANYWHERE else. To start, the menu is extremely limited and the lunch options are awful. Perhaps dinner is better but I will only comment on what we experienced. We had the unfortunate pleasure of being assigned Jessica R. as our server and she definitely hates her job. I ordered the Marine Layer cocktail which was an awful start to an awful experience. The drink was extremely sweet and settled into a cloudy mess of pulp after just 2 minutes (pictured). I only had 1-2 sips of the drink and Jessica never came back for me to address the issue. When our food came, the Braised Short Rib Sandwich was served COLD and again, Jessica was no where to be found. We were hoping to order dessert since it was my actual birthday that day, but Jessica said the kitchen was closed. It was mentioned on the reservation and again to her in person that it was my birthday. She should have let us know that we needed to place dessert orders earlier before the kitchen closed. Jessica dropped off the bill before we asked for it, and then she disappeared AGAIN. We had to physically walk up to her sitting at the bar (on her phone) to get our check closed out. Jessica clearly was not interested in providing any sort of customer service and she does not deserve to be working at a resort of this caliber. There is no excuse for poorly executed cocktails, food served cold, and borderline rude customer service. Please do better.
