Opinions de Hibino Brooklyn
Wonderful, wonderful small neighbourhood Japanese restaurant with interesting daily specials and quality sushi and sashimi dishes. I’ll return for sure!
I love this place, I did not expect for the sushi rolls to be so big with so much fish! Also it is so amazing how they have a large variety of options. The pumpkin croquettes were great. Service and atmosphere is like a diner almost, but with Japanese features.
The miso salmon was perfect, and the server was super friendly! I also recommend their soybean pudding! Really enjoy my time there, excellent vibe, food, and services. Have been to the LIC branch before, and the service was not nice, I feel the LIC one was short of staff, only 2 staffs there and the attitude was…😅😵
Had such a delightful time at this restaurant. The staff is incredibly welcoming, friendly and accommodating. It felt like I was a guest in their home! I got the yellow tail salad, miso salmon, and some of the specials they had for the day. Everything came out hot, fresh, and at such a reasonable price. Even the miso soup was delicious - which I didn’t expect to be so good! For my entree, I got the miso glazed salmon. It was well cooked, fresh, and had a great umami flavor. I also appreciated the good selection of sake they had available. Would definitely visit again, especially if I’m the neighborhood!
Minimalist awesome Japanese spot in Cobble Hill. Fresh awesome fish. What I love about this place is that it feels so family owned, but on top of that the food is just simply delicious. As Another reviewer mentioned mentioned there is no teriyaki drizzle over mediocre sushi rolls here. Usually, I can feel a little sick from bad quality fish and that It’s not the case here. I love that they do daily specials. A lot of Asian cultures embrace little side dishes! It keeps coming back fresh and fun. I love their spicy tuna roll and obanzais (side dishes that chang daily). Don’t get me started w/ the fresh tofu pudding. I wish I would’ve discovered this place sooner. My only feedback is I wished they had lighter dressings. They are a little overly seasoned for me. Otherwise, all the goodness. Love it! Support small businesses.
This hidden gem in Cobble Hill has one of the best sushi in the city. The pieces come very fresh and the rice is properly seasoned. It’s pricier than the typical sushi in a standard Japanese restaurant but you’ll get the premium quality of a high-end sushi place without the high prices. The variety of daily “obanzai” dishes keep me coming back; one day I had fried Salmon balls and another day it was a house-made tofu dish. Easily the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn, if not the city. And thank god the menu doesn’t have the sauce-laden rice-bombs-with-barely-any-seafood monstrosity people call “sushi” nowadays.
This small neighborhood gem has been around for years and I've visited a few times for lunch and dinner. The food is consistently good and high quality, made with fresh ingredients. They've developed such a local following that you can always expect a line of patrons waiting to dine. This time I went with cousins who are near weekly regulars. Their trick is to visit Hibino midweek before the restaurant opens to ensure immediate seating. We waited for about 20 minutes before they opened their doors and were the last group of people to enter before they were completely full. My cousin always gets the Grilled Salmon Collar Bento and raved about it, so the rest of us got the same and promptly cleaned them out of their stock of salmon collars. One of us had to choose a different menu item, so the Beef Short Ribs was selected. We also ordered some tuna and uni sushi to start. Everything we ordered had good flavors and textures, and gave me comfort food vibes. It was like eating Japanese home cooking, but what also stands out is how fresh everything tastes. The high quality ingredients and freshness is apparent in every bite, and I think this is what keeps people coming back for more. I daresay they'll make a regular out of me too.
Everything was awesome. One of my favorites from the menu was the shira-ae. Basically blanched green veggies with a bit of salt and a tofu sauce. The tofu sauce was delicious, and different than any tofu I had ever experience. This dish was very mild and nuanced, and you could really just sink into the flavors. The agedashi tofu was also excellent. “Hibino” as I understand, means “daily.” As in the ingredients are prepared daily, and I will attest that everything tasted fresh. The sushi is also excellent, the yellowtail jalapeño was among my favorites. I imagine this is what a great restaurant in Kyoto tastes like. Our server was great too. She explained the dishes, to us and made some great recommendations. I look forward to going back there.
Really enjoyed my meal here. I would say this is a more modern take on Japanese food. They have the usual that you would expect but a fantastic specials menu where you can tell someone is taking care and effort. I love Japanese food and this was a refreshing place to go out of the normal spicy tuna roll spots.
Delicious, simple and affordable! Try any dish with tofu as it is housemade and absolutely singular in taste and texture alike. The daily obanzi, or homestyle recipes, are always surprisingly minimalist when it comes to ingredients and rich in flavor and textures. I ordered a non traditional coleslaw from this menu on my visit, along with the Hibino Sushi Plate. The sushi was fresh of course, and the chef selected items were relatively outstanding compared to the yellowtail scallion roll I selected for the second half of the dish, which was simply delightful. Last but not least, do not pass up the soymilk custard for dessert!
Fun spot with changing daily specials - their $8 obanzai is the main attraction. We had the pork shiokaji which was incredible, so smoky and just the right amount of fat. Their roasted veg dish and salmon tartare don were also delectable. Their barley tea was also superb with unlimited hot water refills. Their sushi however - somewhat underwhelming - average fish quality but fair price. I would come again for hot dishes
The pricing is pretty reasonable. The space is adorable and conveniently located near the train station. I highly recommend the panko-fried eel, which was absolutely delicious. The salmon skin sushi was also a great choice. However, I wouldn’t recommend the smoked salmon. The menu described it as having spicy mayo and jalapeño, but it didn’t quite live up to that expectation. Overall, it’s a great spot for a casual meal in a nice neighborhood..
It's no wonder why Hibino is always so packed - the sushi is simply outstanding! We had the tuna tataki salad to start, which was flavorful and generous enough for two. We also shared a sushi special, along with two pieces of heavenly toro. The fried eel roll was scrumptious without being greasy or heavy. And to top off the evening, we enjoyed a Cloudy House sake that was not too sweet. All in all, it was a delicious date night experience that reminds one why they fell in love with this restaurant in the first place. Highly recommended!
After visiting multiple times, I’ve noticed an inconsistency with their food. I enjoyed the salmon box pressed sushi which tasted unique because of the natto beans and shiso leaf. However on one visit, they were hard to pick up because the rice would fall apart, while on another visit, the rice to fish ratio was way too high but the rice was perfectly sticky. They have daily specials called “obanzai.” The waiters were friendly. I loved their dessert sake which was a yuzu sake. It tends to be a little warm inside the restaurant. Overall, I love the service but I haven’t found the food impressive.
I finished my meal as a solo dinner on a Saturday night and was taking a few minutes to relax before heading home after paying (including > 20% tip). The server abruptly comes over and says in a rude tone "the next table will be here in 5 minutes" and walks away. There was an empty table beside me (the wait-list rush was over), and this restaurant is walk-ins only so clearly they were just annoywd to have someone who had paid still seated. I appreciate it's a Saturday night and you're trying to turn over tables, but this behavior was uncalled for and absolutely ruined the meal and my experience. I know that had I been there with another person, or had I been drinking, I wouldn't have been treated this way. (Also, there are more subtle, friendly ways to get a customer to leave!) I told them as much when I approached them and all I got was a blank stare and "thank you for your consideration". One of the servers even looked me up and down as I was sharing my frustration. I live I the neighborhood and will absolutely no longer recommend this restaurant to my friends.
