My fav coffee shop in the area. Great food and unique seasonal drinks, stuff I haven’t seen anywhere else in the city. Today I tried their iced taro latte, turmeric milk, egg sandwich, and açaí bowl. Loved them all! Even though the place was almost full, we got our food in a reasonable amount of time.

Great neighborhood grassroots cafe with lovely staff and delicious coffee. Started and staffed by folks in the neighborhood, which is always a relief when cafes such as these are usually harbingers of impending yuppiedoms. Coffee, espresso drinks and pastries (especially the croissants, damn) are always fantastic.

Actually the best quesadilla I’ve ever had in my life. It amazes me how they made quesadilla with pesto and kept the Mexican influence with a delicious fresh pico de Gallo and tomatillo sauce that was to die for. I would absolutely recommend this place for a casual drink and filling vegetarian dinner. The vibe is so nice and great for a chill date. The caramel matcha iced latte was *kiss*

I absolutely love Tikal! The food, the people and the atmosphere is incredible. Even when all I get is coffee, it’s always a good vibe. It’s pet friendly too, so I often go in with my dog.

I really wanted to try the taro latte but I was nervous so I said less sugar but I wish I would’ve gone regular because it wasn’t too sweet at all. It was delicious. I added an espresso shot and I’ll be excited to come back for another! (It was $10 so it’ll be treat as that is very expensive for coffee)

I love this place. They have the best cold brew and croissants in the neighborhood. Everything on their menu that I’ve had, has been delicious. They’re owned by an indigenous woman of color. They’re dog friendly too which is a major plus for me and my son who happens to be a dog.

5 stars because I really want this place to succeed and had an incredible egg sandwich on a fresh croissant with avocado and a great coffee, but I got to mention at least, I went in on a Saturday morning last week, they didn't have any coffee ready, and no pastries out. It was like 9:30am. I grabbed a muffin and it was so dry and bland, it should not have been served. Also, I don't like the music selection, it's too loud and not laidback enough. All things considered, I want this new business to succeed and get better!

The food is tasty but I will say it depends on who you get, the GENTLEMAN that works there CONSTANTLY forgets items in take out and online orders and is very nonchalant about it does not care about customers. It is upsetting when you are a paying customer and I can tell this is a small business that are dedicated to good quality and this man treats people like a bother it must be in the absence of the owner of course.

My favorite coffee in the neighborhood! :) I do wish there was a bit more seating/maybe quieter chiller music so I was inclined to stay and work there but there are other places nearby that I can go for that- they just don’t make coffee like Tikal <\3 also, I agree with others that the food is sub-par. I'm not a vegetarian but I like their food and I live right around the corner. I've been there a few times but this was my first time eating there. We both ordered BLTs which weren't on the menu. I guess the "bacon" was tofu. There was cheese on the sandwich, probably mozzarella. The bread was delicious and it had red onions, a slice of tomato and arugula (again, I'm guessing). Overall, we were happy. I found the sandwich a little bland but the bread made up for that. The time before that, I ordered eggs on toast and got scrambled eggs and 4 triangles of toast in a cardboard box. I didn't understand but it tasted good. The staff is always friendly.

Food is delicious HOWEVER when thee owner is not present the rest of the staff PREPARE THE FOOD LOW QUALITY AND in a thrown about manner, food will be tossed, bag will have food smearing, instructions won't be followed and to top it off they will be smug about it and not care even yell on the phone. Owner needs to higher people who understand customer service.

They lost my ticket, it ended up taking 30 minutes to get my food, which didn’t come out with everything advertised on the menu. I asked about it and they gave me one of missing items but not the other. There are better places to eat nearby.

[They should consider a quick and easy buttermilk recipe to improve their pancakes (just add lemon to the recipe to react with the baking soda and make the pancakes fluffy)]. Additionally, the food took a very long time to arrive. It's a shame because the spot is adorable, but they really need to improve the food quality. I will go back again but maybe just for coffee. This is an up-and-coming neighborhood so I am rooting for shops that open up in our neighborhood. I hoping they train their chef on how to make tasty eggs and pancakes.

The food is great-- but the reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of the portion control. I've gone to this restaurant and have always been satisfied. This recent order-- I'm surprised by how little portion I received. I've shared a photo on the hearty breakfast bowl takeout order I received. Where are my potatoes? This for $13? Still hungry unfortunately.

The food is not really worth the prices (bland, simple, cheapo diner quality, small portions.) We also always forget there’s no AC in the interiors which makes dining in during the summer uncomfortable. There aren’t many brunch options in our area, but after our last visit I don’t think we’ll be trying this location out anymore. edit re: owner response — Paying standard business expenses unfortunately does not automatically make a company’s product excellent (I also own a business in NYC and know this is a difficult truth) Your aggressive response towards negative reviews does not do much to encourage your customers’ return and is a disservice to the hardworking staff that work for you :)

I got avocado toast and it tasted like the one you get at Dunkin Donuts. It was on thin bread I could’ve bought at the grocery store. And the avocados were mashed and flavorless. Even though the atmosphere is seemingly inviting, the service is extremely slow. We sat for more than an hour and still no food or an acknowledgment of our extensive wait. I also ordered a flavored tea because my go to—Chai—was out of stock. The tea looked and tasted like water with food coloring. For a start up business, this not a good look.

My sister and I were really excited to try this spot, but we were sadly disappointed. They have a sign asking for patience as they make food to order, but we were not the only ones who waited 30 min for a coffee (the drinks were delicious, but not worth the wait) on a not very busy early Sunday morning. After waiting an hour for our food (avocado toast and açai bowl) we finally asked them to change it to a to-go order. The food was fine, but again, not worth the enormous wait or the price (pretty soggy and underwhelming). If you're looking to spend a while at a cafe with a drink, this might make sense. Otherwise, I can't say I recommend the place. Definitely not somewhere to stop in for a quick coffee, as we also saw people waiting a long time for their to go drink orders. It would also have been nice to have been updated on our order or to say least have the long wait acknowledged.

Overpriced. $8 for a barely 8 oz orange juice.

So, it really makes me sad to give this place a low rating, because the staff was great and the food was genuinely tasty, however, I went here twice and both times their food gave me absolutely horrific runs and stomach pain. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but then it happened again the second time. I’m not sure if the kitchen is unsanitary or what, but I don’t think I’ll eat here a third time.

The drinks are pretty good and so are the baked goods but it’s pretty pricey in there. The açaí bowl is pretty disgusting, it had no taste whatsoever and it was a very small portion for the price. I also tried their quesadilla for $15 and that was extremely underwhelming as well. Likely won’t be returning.

I returned to pay for a glass of orange juice that was ordered verbally, off the original bill from a previous visit. (You order at the counter and pay for your order in full, prior to eating or sitting down). We ordered the OJ verbally after waiting 15+ minutes with no food or coffee arriving at the table. The employee tried to accuse my partner and I of ordering 2 rounds of coffee, only paying for 1, and then tried to backtrack when their effort of pulling up camera footage “proof” proved they were wrong. Their cold brew was also spoiled.

I live really close by & I came on here to say do NOT get food from here. The potatoes we got tasted like they were rotten/old. The avocado toast was soggy, and the eggs “Benedict” was hard to get through. We quickly threw it away as we feared food poisoning. Just get your drinks from here don’t get food! I usually don’t make reviews… but this was bad :( Edit: I called to let them know not to serve any more of that batch of potatoes/eggs because they tasted rotten/ could get someone sick, and the person on the phone would not believe that it was her location, even though I had just walked in and ordered to-go 10 minutes prior. I live ONE block down and made sure I called the correct location on detaur st. Because of this terrible experience I won’t be coming again! Edit: I’m not sure what the size of your cafe has to do with the quality of your produce. Also I would consider your teams response to bad reviews. Very defensive, passive aggressive. Last week I went to buy two large lattes and two almond croissants, I really like this cafeteria, the coffee is delicious and the food as well, but I have never had an unpleasant moment with any employee of this cafeteria, she gave me the small glass and said that if I wanted a large latte I had to ask for an extra large latte, and they had never done this to me in this cafeteria, they had always served me well and they always gave me exactly what I asked for, apart from everything the coffee was poorly made and when I opened it it was too greasy, even though it was regular milk my latte seemed like it had little yellow fat balls in it, what a shame because something like that had never happened to me 🙁

This place charges premium prices for bargain-bin service. The cashiers always look lost, like they’re solving a math equation instead of taking an order. Multitasking? Doesn’t exist. Remembering what you asked for? Good luck. It took 10 minutes to get a simple black coffee—were they harvesting the beans in the back? For what they charge, you’d think they’d at least know what’s going on. Save your money and go somewhere that serves coffee and competence.

I came to this cafe to do work on a Saturday. I got my coffee and sat at a table. I was told about 15 minutes later that I would need to move my seat because I was planning on doing work and had not ordered food. I have never been micro managed at a cafe before. I would have preferred if there was a sign that said, "No laptops" before purchasing so that I could go elsewhere. I also want to note that after I moved, no one was sitting at the table I was originally sitting at and instead they put "reserved" placements. Even though this cafe is two blocks away from home, I will not be returning. Also, after reading the owners responses to the reviews, there is a true lack of accountability at this cafe and its clear that they're prioritizing profit over customer satisfaction. After paying nearly $4 for a drip coffee, I would hope that you would care about various customers expressing issues with the shop however, I am seeing a defensive owner that will not take accountability for their lack of management.

This place is overpriced. They only carry one size. $7.89 after tax for a medium cold brew. I asked for light ice, the server said “this is light ice”, I asked nicely for less ice and she brings back a drink that tasted like all cream and milk. Definitely my last visit.

I have been coming to Tikal Cafe for years, and will not be back after today. Today is my birthday, and I went to the cafe this morning just to quickly have their matcha waffles that I ordered and liked once before as dine-in. No drink and no fuss whatsoever- I wasn't planning anything special to celebrate, and just wanted to sit for a minute and eat before getting to work. Two minutes after I order my food, their front door that is ENTIRELY made of glass unlatches in the server/baristas hands. I immediately ran over to make sure she wasn't hurt and tried to stabilize the door until some help arrived, so that their front door wouldn't crash and shatter on the ground. This isn't a big deal to me, I am always happy to help. I helped lean the door against a heavy keg outside so that the server could make a call and do whatever else she needed to do. I waited outside for help to arrive in case the glass door started to slip, and did have to jump up to catch the door multiple times because of the wind outside pushing the door forward, and eventually just stood holding the door until the owner could get there. The owner arrived and said he had it, no thank you or anything, but it's stressful so that was okay and I understood. Over 30 minutes after I ordered (first order of the day, only one after mine), I still did not receive my food. By the time the person who ordered several minutes after me was given their food first, I gave up on my birthday breakfast, and asked to have my waffles packed to go when they were ready, so I could get to my work on time. I cannot express how disappointed I was to open my to-go box and see that they (the owner) only gave me the smallest amount humanly possible of both the whipped cream and strawberry cream after I personally saved them hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars saving their door without as much of a thank you. The waffles also tasted off, but I still would have come back the very next day if someone would have just communicated the long wait so I would know, asked if I wanted a refund, OR not have taken my order in the first place if there was no one to make it when I ordered it. I will not be back.

I came to this cafe to do work on a Saturday. I got my coffee and sat at a table. I was told about 15 minutes later that I would need to move my seat because I was planning on doing work and had not ordered food. I have never been micro managed at a cafe before. I would have preferred if there was a sign that said, "No laptops" before purchasing so that I could go elsewhere. I also want to note that after I moved, no one was sitting at the table I was originally sitting at and instead they put "reserved" placements. Even though this cafe is two blocks away from home, I will not be returning. Also, after reading the owners responses to the reviews, there is a true lack of accountability at this cafe and its clear that they're prioritizing profit over customer satisfaction. After paying nearly $4 for a drip coffee, I would hope that you would care about various customers expressing issues with the shop however, I am seeing a defensive owner that will not take accountability for their lack of management.

Fall from Venus

I have been coming to Tikal Cafe for years, and will not be back after today. Today is my birthday, and I went to the cafe this morning just to quickly have their matcha waffles that I ordered and liked once before as dine-in. No drink and no fuss whatsoever- I wasn't planning anything special to celebrate, and just wanted to sit for a minute and eat before getting to work. Two minutes after I order my food, their front door that is ENTIRELY made of glass unlatches in the server/baristas hands. I immediately ran over to make sure she wasn't hurt and tried to stabilize the door until some help arrived, so that their front door wouldn't crash and shatter on the ground. This isn't a big deal to me, I am always happy to help. I helped lean the door against a heavy keg outside so that the server could make a call and do whatever else she needed to do. I waited outside for help to arrive in case the glass door started to slip, and did have to jump up to catch the door multiple times because of the wind outside pushing the door forward, and eventually just stood holding the door until the owner could get there. The owner arrived and said he had it, no thank you or anything, but it's stressful so that was okay and I understood. Over 30 minutes after I ordered (first order of the day, only one after mine), I still did not receive my food. By the time the person who ordered several minutes after me was given their food first, I gave up on my birthday breakfast, and asked to have my waffles packed to go when they were ready, so I could get to my work on time. I cannot express how disappointed I was to open my to-go box and see that they (the owner) only gave me the smallest amount humanly possible of both the whipped cream and strawberry cream after I personally saved them hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars saving their door without as much of a thank you. The waffles also tasted off, but I still would have come back the very next day if someone would have just communicated the long wait so I would know, asked if I wanted a refund, OR not have taken my order in the first place if there was no one to make it when I ordered it. I will not be back.

This place is overpriced. They only carry one size. $7.89 after tax for a medium cold brew. I asked for light ice, the server said “this is light ice”, I asked nicely for less ice and she brings back a drink that tasted like all cream and milk. Definitely my last visit.
