Opinions de Traif Brooklyn
What a gem of a restaurant. Traif is famous for its chef’s tasting menu, but this isn’t the over-the-top kind that’ll set you back several hundred dollars. It’s more Brooklyn casual, fun, and much more affordable, which makes it such a great experience. Not every dish totally hit the mark, but there were more than enough winners to make me want to come back. The standout of the night was a scallop served over a delicious risotto—easily my favorite bite. And if you’re into wine, their pairing is one of the most affordable I’ve seen in NYC, which makes the whole experience even better. All in all, a fun, approachable tasting menu that’s definitely worth trying.
We had a 8:30 reservation last night at Traif, and we couln't recommend this restaurant more. We went for the tasting menu, which was excellent. The endives salad at the beginning was the highlight, followed by the nearly buttery chicken wings in the middle, and succulent pork ribs to finish. However, what really stood out last night was the service. Both gentleman were doing great job, however the bartender/sommelier went above and beyond from the start to make our experience exceptional, and we would like to give him a shout out. As someone who works in a fine dining establishment and has considerable experience of dining at high-end restaurants, I must emphasize that personal service focused on hospitality is a rarity in the industry. We can't wait to visit you again!
Petra and Sergio are amazing!! The food is unbelievable, the salt and pepper shrimp, scallop risotto, key lime pie, and lettuce wedges are insane. The ambience on the patio, and the service are highlights of this restaurant. We are from Seattle and researched a lot of restaurants before we came and we are so glad we chose this one. The highlight of our trip!!
I went here for an event with tasting collective so I can't really comment on service, portion size, or price, but I will say that the food is really tasty. I highly enjoyed everything that was served and think there is something for everyone here. I will definitely be coming back for a non-tasting collective event!
Randomly came across this restaurant on Resy and I am so happy I did and can't believe I never have been here 14 years of living in NY!!! Everything was amazing from drinks, food to dessert 🍨 I cannot wait to return again soon enough!!!! And the price is really good for NY 🥰🥰🥰 My new fave 😍 Came back and still amazing 👏
Really fantastic restaurant. Excellent value, large servings throughout the tasting menu, and the most friendly staff who go above and beyond. Thanks Dylan for taking care of us so well.
Great food and drinks. Great service and bartender (Alex I think who also manages). We Get the tasting menu. We live nearby and ranks as one of best with Llama Inn.
Went a few nights ago with a group of friends I was little hesitant when I heard it's $55 a person for 10 courses. The food, service and atmosphere were excellent. Each course was inspired from another country I really enjoyed the variation of dishes and flavors. My top three were the scallop risotto, pork tenderloin with fries, and the spicy tuna tartare. I had a white whine from Spain it was light and refreshing. Make sure you come with an appetite and a nice group of friends.
Best dining experience in NYC! Outstanding food across the board, we ordered around 8 dishes and loved every one. Highlight was the pork ribs which were cooked and dressed perfectly, crispy on the outside, tender, and with a sweet and sour glaze (I’m drooling thinking about it). I can’t wait to come back and try another 8 dishes!
My boyfriend and I discovered Traif thanks to a viral TikTok showcasing their 10-course chef tasting, and it lived up to every bit of the hype. The $56 per person cost is worth every penny. The ten courses (sometimes more!) are served tapas-style, perfect for sharing among your group. The variety is astounding, presented beautifully on decorative plates that invite you to savor each dish. We left feeling satisfied and genuinely full—a rarity with tasting menus. The staff was exceptional, adding to the overall experience. Our final bill, around $180 for the chef's tasting for two, two cocktails, and a 20 percent service charge for the staff, felt reasonable for what we received. Opting for the chef's selection was a great move; the food was imaginative and delicious. Honestly, the only regret I have is not capturing more photos—each dish was so captivating that I couldn't resist diving right in. Highly recommend Traif for your next night out.
This has been the BEST dinner in NYC I’ve ever had. You NEED to get the chefs selection for $56 per person. The chef picks 8 shareable plates (all menu items are meant to be shared 3-6 will satisfy you) and 2 desserts. We got: scallops, pork ribs, tuna tartare, Brussels sprouts, seared foi gras, gnocchi, steak frites, coulini salad. The scallops were the best!!! Everything was fantastic. The staff is very kind and professional. The food came at a reasonable pace and they gave a free round of drinks for our anniversary. Final bill, with gratuity (it’s already included with the bill) and one glass of white wine (which was Devine) it’s came out to $164 Without a doubt we will be back!!
The food here was outstanding. We were a group of 4 and had just about everything on the menu. Favorites were the gnocchi, salt and pepper shrimp, foie gras, and Japanese red snapper with the bao buns. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the strawberry ribs, maybe I was too full at that time! The ambiance was great where we sat in the back patio. Would highly recommend checking out.
We fell in love with this restaurant so much we ate here two nights in a row. The food, service, and ambiance were excellent, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. The roasted carrots were insanely good as was the burrata with homemade chips and bacon. We were so full we had to take the gnocchi and shrimp dishes home. The next evening we again ordered the roasted carrots, roasted cauliflower, and had to try their key lime pie which did not disappoint! My only regret is that we’ll have to plan another trip to NY in order to eat here again!
We’ve never been here so it was a first for the both of us. There were so many options that we did the chefs selection and it’s worth every penny! I enjoy the pictures, but I wanted to dive right into each dish because they were just amazing. The cocktails were very nice and refreshing. The service was great they explained each dish with detail. Will come back!
Amazing 12-course tasting menu for only $55/person! I'm hard-pressed to find decent tasting menus at that price point in LA or anywhere else in the country for that matter. We went on a Monday night when it was less busy so we felt like we were well taken care of. I wish I could describe everything we ate but hopefully the photos do a better job of that. Definitely now one of my favorite NYC spots.
My niece and I just had dinner this past Thursday. Dinner was delishes! We both the tasting menu, minus the foie gras, and the wine pairing. I enjoyed both the food and the service. Our waitress was amazing, actually the whole staff was warm and friendly. Look forward to coming back soon.
Fantastic lowkey spot in Brooklyn. We did the Chef’s special, $55/per person and you get about 10 small courses so that you can try several different menu items. Salad, appetizers, beef, chicken and seafood were amongst them along with dessert. Decent cocktail and wine selection too. Great service. We arrived about 30 minutes early for our reservation but they still accommodated us. Proof of vaccination required.
Tucked into a less popular corner of Williamsburg, Traif's story is that it's owned by a Jewish couple who wanted create both kosher and un-kosher foods. We opted for the $56/pp tasting menu that came in sharing portions, and were not disappointed. There were no duds; every dish was interesting and different. And served in an unpretentious Brooklyn-esque setting. My favorites were the scallop risotto, romanesco salad and eggplant canape. 1. dayboat scallops, english pea & mint risotto, lemon-pistachio brown butter 2. little gem lettuce wedges, passion fruit, miso, cashew crunch, nori, sesame, purple shiso 3. spicy bigeye tuna tartare, tempura japanese eggplant, kecap manis 4. roasted romanesco, cherry tomatoes, peanuts, crispy rice, chile-coconut vin. 5. toasted parisienne gnocchi, carrot-cardamon puree, aged goat's gouda 6. strawberry-cinnamon glazed berkshire pork ribs, mint, ginger, chilies 7. roasted duck breast, rhubarb & castelvetrano olive caponata, raspberry, red wine, dukkah 8. braised heritage lamb shank, fava bean hummus, muhamarra, pita 9. mom's key lime pie, graham crust, pineapple, ginger, five spice 10. bacon doughnuts: ricotta 'zeppoles,' dulce de leche, coffee cream
My best dinning experience in New York! It was our anniversary and the staff were really nice. Not to mention the food itself, out of expectation, we had the tasting menu and came up 11 courses, from entree to main to dessert, my favorite was scallops and foie gras, others are delicious as well, I think all their foods worth to try:) would come again if I come to NY next time.
Tasting menu review : found this place watching videos online & its Banging. Make a reservation. $60 tasting menu? Yeah. This place is a flavor factory. Ate at the bar. If you’re tall, get a table. Yard seating is great too. Got the wine pairing, would recommend but not memorable… like the rest of the food. Thanks Traif
Do the chef’s selection at $55 per person. Very affordable for a tasting menu especially in the area. Restaurants in a convenient location in Williamsburg. We had 8 small plates + 2 desserts. Optional $40 wine pairing featuring 3-4 half glasses plus a dessert wine. The dishes were delicious and varied. Great service as well! 20% tip was included in the bill for all table sizes, which I hadn’t seen before.
I LOVE this place. I’ve been using it as a celebratory restaurant for fun stuff in life. New jobs, friends in town or just a random visit to a really good restaurant. The restaurant has great service, perfect sharing portions and amazing drinks. I almost always opt for a bottle of wine when I visit and found that 6-7 plates of food with a hungry partner will have you perfectly satisfied when dessert lands. Pictured is the rude little pig, truffle rigatoni (a must have), lettuce wedges, burrata, salt/pepper shrimp, spicy tuna tartare, strawberry cinnamon glazed ribs (a must have), ricotta bacon doughnuts (a must have) and key lime pie. Now don’t think because I didn’t include “must have” that the dishes aren’t any good. Everything tasted amazing but these dishes are what the restaurant have been “known” over the years of me frequenting the menu and observing subtle yet delicious changes as the seasons shift. Reservations are through Resy and are recommended. This place gets loud and packed by 8pm on a Friday night. My next visit will be to their sister restaurant, Xixa, as I also heard good things. If you’re in the area, reserve a table at Traif.
Saved this gem for our last night in the city. Amazing tasting menu featuring unexpected and superb flavor combinations. Great, personal and friendly service. Picked some of our own small plates and went with staff recommendations for the others and every plate was fantastic. Now I know why this is one of my son's favorite spots. Best meal we had in New York.
This restaurant was recommended by a friend today and he raved about it. We were overwhelmed by the quality of the food, service, and the cacophony of flavors we experienced tonight. Un freaking believable. I highly recommend!
Traif is more than meets the eye from the curb side. Tastefully decorated outdoor space with lights and grapevine gives this place additional charm. Now about food: (we chose chefs choice) ~11 dishes to try which were arriving to the table right off the flame. Check out the photos, they not only looked good and nicely plated, but were also delicious and all were able to split to 4 people. Signature drinks were nicely made, without a smell of alcohol but at 3rd sip they catch up with you. Attentive Traif team were taking care of the smaller sized table where our empty dishes didn't stand on the table long and new dish was served. Overall we had a nice and pleasant experience. Enjoy!
This is a review of the even by Tasting Collective that we attended. It was a 10-Course Globally Inspired Feast. Ever since I joined Tasting Collective, the name Traif kept coming up as everyone’s favorite restaurant event. And this is a diners club of food lovers, I had to go and try it out! The interior is simple and industrial, chilled, and with very cool, modern, abstract art decor throughout. I liked the mix of straight and curved lines, minimal but yet distinctive colors, simple furniture and warm, soft light inviting customers in. They had a very lovely patio in the back. I really liked it here, it had more natural light coming in before the Sun went down, and then lit up with festive string lights. They had good amount of greenery around it that made the space even more relaxing. We started off with a couple of drinks. We chose Yuzu Kosho and Drink Like its Spring. They were both very tasty, high quality and strong. For food, we got to try Crispy Sweetbreads, Cured Fluke Sashimi, Dry-Aged Venison, Roasted Berkshire Pork Belly, Roasted Rainbow Carrots, Salt & Pepper Hamachi Collar Wraps, Seared Scallops & Risotto, Smoked Lamb Puttanesca Cavatelli, Toasted Pistachio Budino, and Warm Sugar Maple Pie. All these dishes, one word: Amazing!!! I now know the reason why this is the most popular spot among the Tasting Collective members. My taste buds were having the time of their lives the entire night! I would love to go back again for more of their amazing dishes! Read my full review of the restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl
One of my favorite restaurants in NYC! I’ve been here for probably 8 or 9 times already and I am still craving for it! Brought many friends there and none of them were disappointed. Amazing techniques and great quality. I can’t name another that’s remotely comparable to Traif with the same price you pay. I would say the food is even better than some Michelin restaurants.
$58 tasting menu that doesn’t have a single miss? Yeah, you can’t beat that! Every dish was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The scallops were the best my group and I ever had. The blueberry pork ribs? Ton die for.
Had the chef's tasting menu dinner with two friends. It was consensus 5 ⭐ for the food afaict. One of the friends, who typically won't visit the same restaurant twice, indicated it was so good they would consider returning. They also added onto their list the sister's restaurant of Traif. My favorite was probably the scallop risotto, closely followed by the caprese salad.
Left this for our last night of a food-centric trip to NYC. The tasting menu and corresponding wine tasting are a steal and the flavors are well thought out and incredible. It was a quiet Monday night so atmosphere was very pleasant and cozy and service was excellent. Every single item in the 10 courses was a hit; the standouts for me were the tuna tartare, blueberry ribs, prawn and porcini risotto and the spatzle. Still dreaming of the ricotta donuts at the end! Will definitely be back when visiting again!
This has to be one of the best places I’ve tried in a New York minute. First of all, love it when the waiter walks over and first thing he says is that the plates are designed for sharing (like tapas) so there are no official courses. Everything we put in our mouths was mind blowing. The blueberry-cinnamon pork ribs were next level. And the watermelon shishito peppers were phenomenal. The thing that surprised us the most was the lettuce wedges. Seemingly so simple but epically good. This place plays with flavor bursts in your mouth - sweet and salty, sweet and spicy, salty and spicy. Super interesting meal, great atmosphere, and open kitchen concept so you watch the chefs prepare your food in real time. The cocktails were also a great balance of sweet and spicy. The chili Thai basil drink was definitely my jam! Suffice it to say we will definitely be back as I need to try everything else on the menu!
What a fabulous experience. Excellent service from the minute we walked in. We (4 of us) had the chefs selection which is incredibly priced for the amount of delicious food you get. I only took a handful of pics of SO many dishes that just kept coming. Wine pairing was excellent as well. We will definitely be back!
Had a wonderful experience here! They offer a very reasonably priced prefix menu option, which I highly recommend. You can also specially ask for certain items to be included if you see something you really want to try. Our waiter was very personable and attentive. The food was non-stop delicious. There wasn’t a dish we didn’t enjoy. Good portions and great flavors. I’ll be posting a bunch of photos of what we go with descriptions so if you want to be inspired, check those out!
We haven’t been here for few years since Covid. Had a family dinner of 6 people. We all ordered tasting menu. Food came fast. Very good presentation. Each food was beautiful and delicious. Loved the duck. It was so tender and melting in mouse. 2 hours later still have that delicious aftertastes. At the end we had 2 types of desserts; key lime pie and doughnuts. Key lime pie was my favorite. I never liked key lime pie, but this one I would have everyday. Had a very nice tasting menu experience. This is what I call “Modern America Food”.
Offering a dedicated none kosher tasting menu at the lovely decorated backyard area that feels like an oasis in the urban environment. The eleven courses are served shared, but portioned based on the number of attendees. Feels like most are none kosher with the addition of bacon or pork. Really enjoyed scallops on risotto, roasted cauliflower and donuts. The fried red snapper was the weakest dish, filet and batter very bland, unseasoned.
Incredible pallet of flavors! We went with chefs choice at $55 per person and was a great way to try most of the menu. Scallops and the best salad were top but truffle cacio Pepe was phenomenal. Great service excellent atmosphere did get a little noisy later into the evening so if you are looking for a quiet place this might not be the spot.
Every dish was well executed and made with quality ingredients. Portions were great and presentation was perfect. I especially loved the fried japanese snapper fillet: 10/10. Highly recommend doing the tasting menu and trying the seasonal cocktails. Service was great & overall lovely experience !!
Many have already said that 10 courses for $55 is really good and I can only agree 👍 The food is no frills, simply delicious modern American cuisine! Each course was a small taste of their menu in perfect portions. Each one delicious and definitely worth the price. The house cocktails were also delicious and well prepared. Service was attentive and in general swift. As constructively criticism I can mention that the speed of the kitchen was uneven; we weren't yet finished with the previous course when the next one was already coming to the table. I think this is simply because the kitchen is small and they have to make multiple tables at once and also they really want you out in 2h. Also, sitting next to the kitchen will leave a greasy smell to your clothes.
I’ve been here three times now and every single time the food is fantastic! Came yesterday and did the chefs tasting and the wine pairing. We were blown away by every dish and the value for what you get is unheard of in NYC. I also loved the wine pairing how every wine was explained in detail- a great touch. ONLY downside has nothing to do with food or service. It’s an open kitchen so gets quite smokey inside. Wish the ventilation was a bit better. Still cannot wait to come back again soon!
When my friend told me about this place, I couldn't believe: 11 courses for $55? For NYC, it's affordable. Fortunately, it's true and it's worth it. You should definitely come here for the "chef's selection" to get the 11 tapa-style courses for only $55. It's perfect for sharing and you can even get a wine pairing for $40 per person. The food is delicious, every single dish is perfect. The gnocchi was amazing... There is a great mix and match including meat, seafood, pasta and vegetables. The desserts are incredible. It's like a fancy dinner without breaking the bank.
We had an amazing experience at Traif last night. We had the tasting menu and the food was simply awesome. The service was excellent and the price reasonable for the experience (we would paid a lot more in a restaurantin Manhattan) ! We will definitely come back.
Picked the chef selection of 8 course meals and two desserts. We had the red pearl drink and the hey hey mai tai. Both drinks were really great. The food was very tasteful and very well presented. The price for the chef selection is very reasonable -$56 per person. we enjoyed the atmosphere and the waiter was super nice and kind. Before they give you a dish they explain what’s in it. Overall, my partner and I enjoyed our experience here at Traif. We really recommend it. If you like a surprise then the chef selection is the way to go.
The culinary skill that went into cultivating such flavorful dishes is impeccable. But what most impressive for me is that they managed to bring out the food while it’s hot. So often I dine out and the food is pretty and all but cold once it gets to the table. I definitely will be dining at Traif again. Excellent service and amazing food.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Another Mic Drop meal! 🥰😋 So much better than many much harder to get into restaurants in New York City. Don't waste your time, eat at Traif! UPDATE: Back here for the first time since the pandemic still ABSOLUTELY SOLID. Brought the family for a birthday celebration and they loved it. Standouts were EVERYTHING but I've been dreaming about the rigatoni with truffles. We did get takeout from here during the pandemic and it was the best food we had that I didn't have to cook. So nice to be able to eat in again ----------------- I've been eating at Traif for many years and have never had a bad meal. I love the creativity and range of the menu. Sometimes we'll order half the things on the menu because we are being especially gluttonous. I prefer small plates so this restaurant really works for me. This time we were seated outside or almost outside so it was a little bit cold in the marquee that they put over their backyard. Best dish was the roasted cauliflower with puffed rice! Other favorite dishes on this evening were the strawberry ribs, which we always get, the snapper with the deep fried bao buns and the duck. The wine was really good.
Absolutely loved our experience of dining at Traif! This was one of our highlights of the trip! The restaurant is a hidden gem in Williamsburg ! The owner Heather was extremely welcoming and she secured us a table without hassle when she knew we have traveled from the Uk and really wanted to eat here after hearing a lot of good recommendations , was quite accommodating! Amazing 10 course chef tasting menu (8 plus 2 desserts) for £56 per person! Special mention to Elizabeth who was our server , she was quite friendly and made sure we are comfortable and having a great time! Loved their backyard setting, with all the lights and plants makes it feel a bit homely , enjoyed each and every dish in this lovely setting! When we are back in NY will definitely visit again! With drinks our total bill including service charge was £200 and it was worth it!
Oh my goodness! Small plates that pack a punch! We each got the Chef's Tasting Menu which was 8-10 dishes plus dessert - $60ish pp? Each plate was made for 4 since there was 4 of us and they usually came out 2 at a time. By the time dessert came we were stuffed so come hungry. Literally every dish was perfection. I love to cook and when I find a restaurant where dishes come out and I don't know how to reverse engineer to make it at home I have found heaven! Thinking about the combination of flavors that they put together makes my mouth water all over again.
The best tasting menu deal I’ve seen, probably ever. All the dishes were solid as well, I had such a fun time here! $56 for a 10 course meal (8 savory, 2 sweet), $14 for all cocktails. With the automatically added gratuity (20%), the meal and one drink comes out to be about $90pp. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how tasty all of the dishes were, and how a lot of the flavor/ingredient combos were new for me (e.g. cinnamon strawberry ribs, eggplant with tuna tartare). It’s not crazy upscale like you’d expect a place with a 10 course menu to be, but that’s what’s so great about this place. It’s just good food, and a great variety of it. The favorites from our table were the scallops with pea risotto, the strawberry cinnamon ribs, the fried fish bao, and the key lime pie. I’m already excited to come back. Mentioned this earlier, but note that 20% gratuity is automatically added to the check.
I was hesitant to get the tasting menu at first because I wasn’t too hungry, but I’m so glad I did! Every dish was exciting and different. I’m glad I got to try so many dishes I would’ve have ordered a la carte. The tasting menu (8 dishes with 2 desserts) is the most affordable one if seen in New York. Will definitely be back - even to sit at the bar and get a few small bites. Two chefs and a bartender. So simple yet so great
This is a restaurant we return to often, and it never misses. The chef’s talent is undeniable—every dish is beautifully executed. The menu is refined yet approachable, and the attention to detail shows in every bite. Service is exceptional: warm, knowledgeable, and perfectly paced. Nothing feels rushed or overlooked. The consistency across visits is what truly sets this place apart. I truly believe that this restaurant is operating at a Michelin-star level. It’s special, memorable, and absolutely deserving of that recognition.
Holy… this place is insane. Hands down, one of the best meals I’ve had in the city. My boyfriend and I chose the chef selection. Every plate of food felt like a luxury. The portions are small, but delicious, flavorful, and surprisingly filling. On top of that, the order and timing of when the food hits the table is incredibly timed. Whoever planned out the timing and order in which things hit the table, knows how to read a room. This place is an absolute treat and experience and we will definitely be returning.
This is probably my favorite restaurant in the entire US, all thanks to changing menu and their chef's selection offering (highly recommend to get this). I was never disappointed by a single item here, everything is unique and delicious. They treat you like you are in Michelin star restaurant, without charging their prices. Things I am always looking to are their tuna tartar, braised short ribs and dessert donuts! If you are ever in the area, stop by and you will love it!
Be forewarned, this is a little difficult to find at night! The name of the place on the door is all that you can see -- no sign hanging outside. But, once you do get inside, what a great place to celebrate a birthday! the family gathered to celebrate my son-in-laws birthday last week, and we had the Chef's Tasting menu. A few things truly stood out: first and foremost was the staff. A couple people in our group had various allergies or food preferences (gluten, no meat, etc) and the kitchen staff and chef bent over backwards practically to accommodate our needs. Our servings, which were served family-style, were (and I can't remember the order!) a salad with grilled shrimp, foie gras, duck, tuna tartare on a deep fried eggplant 'chip', Parisian gnocchi, and a fish and bao bun dish. The fish was by far my fave, but the tuna tartare was a very close second! Again, the staff were phenomenal in their serving, clearing, and replacing plates an cutlery. The environment was wonderful, and we had a wonderful time!
To Dylen James and the Traif Team, Warm greetings from the couple visiting from Florida! We just wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dylen for the amazing recommendations—we made it a point to visit every place you suggested, and each one was absolutely spot on. Our experience at Traif was nothing short of phenomenal. From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable, and the food… wow. Truly top-tier. Hats off to the chef and the entire team—you all delivered a 6-star experience (yes, we’re going beyond 5!). We’ll definitely be back soon, and next time, we just might call ahead to see if Dylen is working 😊 With appreciation, Your Florida Fans
Wow, what an unforgettable dining experience! At first glance, this restaurant looks so unassuming from the outside, but once you step in, the open kitchen design immediately grabs your attention. We ordered eight dishes plus two desserts, and honestly, every single one had its own highlight. The presentation was meticulous, and the flavors spoke for themselves—refined, balanced, and absolutely delicious. The first standout was the shrimp served over pasta—grilled over fire, infused with that irresistible smoky “wok hei” flavor. Hands down the best shrimp I’ve ever had, no exaggeration. Next came the cauliflower—simple and comforting, a nice balance before the heavier dishes. Then the pork liver… my goodness. Zero gaminess, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and surprisingly similar to foie gras—maybe even better! Paired with fruit, it was just genius. The pork dish that followed was also paired with fruit, creating a beautiful sweet-savory contrast. The ribs leaned toward a sweet profile as well, perfectly glazed and fall-off-the-bone tender. To finish, the donut with bacon was such a unique twist—slightly sweet, slightly savory, and definitely memorable. And here’s the kicker: all of this for just $58 per person. The value is insane for the quality and creativity you get. Truly a hidden gem—I left full, happy, and impressed beyond words. Highly recommended!
Food is unbelievable. Changing Menu gives it a reason to keep coming back. Service has to be outstanding. Petra is a rockstar. She gave the best dining experience and the best drinks! We met Alex on a separate night. Genuinely a kind soul. We came back looking for him. Personally, I love the design. Abstract and minimalist. The tone is dark but I think the joyful atmosphere and the worker’s attire, they wear what they want, adds the color that’s not present in the decor. If there is an award for being the Best Restaurant in NYC, Traif deserves it
Tonight I had the pleasure of spending my birthday with the team…comfortable, and satisfied. Perfectly paired ingredients that play from taste to texture, well timed course arrival. Truly enjoyable food experience( my fave in the city ) And, thank you Justin, Beyond the obvious quality of Thoughtful ownership, which is represented that goes past “owning” anything/body, the sense of leadership gives “a Lion doesn’t have to tell you they’re a Lion” Please note I also love how over 18 yrs This business is a family business, from his mom’s keylime pie to his partnership with Heather, who has a restaurant down the block, (‘Xixa’ same quality differently focused) Also…Get the ribs.. 😜
I found this from the Michelin guide, and it lives up to the recommendation. Beautiful food, amazing combinations of flavors Elevated but super approachable You cannot been an 8 course plus 2 dessert chefs tasting menu for $58. Unreal value. We loved it The duck, the scallop risotto, the tuna tartar, and the gnocchi were our favorites. Make the trip! We will come back!
Had such a great time at Traif for dinner - very fast service, attentive servers, amazing food, delicious drinks. Didn’t take any pictures of the food or drinks unfortunately but we all enjoyed everything we ordered. Very reasonably priced too for nyc. Our server Petra was awesome!! Will be coming back.
I have been so looking forward to my birthday dinner this year with my closest friends and we chose Traif. This was Oct. 26th Saturday so this was the pre-Halloween weekend so the area was relatively busy. We went for the 5pm slot so that it would be calmer and it was. We were given a nice table at the further back, near the door that leads to the garden. We knew we would all go for the Chef's Tasting menu because of how incredible the deal sounded and it was. It felt a bit hurried in terms of pace to be honest but quality of food is great. Our favorites were the scallop risotto, and glazed ribs. The bacon doughnuts were small but yum. Appreciate that they brought a small dessert for me in a cup with a little candle. Not sure if that counted for what was supposed to be the key lime pie each but we didn't get that so unsure if they forgot, since the other dessert showed as a separate line item on the receipt. Some of my friends were really looking forward to trying it. Everything was all wrapped up by 6:15 so we were just enjoying our 2nd round of drinks. Went to the restroom and I come back to our table being empty to my surprise. My friends told me that they were abruptly asked to already leave for the next seating, this was approaching 6:30. Needless to say, it wasn't really the best way to end a first impression. One of my friends said she actually had to say something diplomatically. Gentle reminder that it's an overall experience, from food to ambiance to service, so hoping the next experience is better if we ever get back as it's an hour drive for us. P.S For those planning to drive, there's no parking spot nearby, you'd have to make sure you bake in plenty of time to find parking in the nearby blocks.
Visited for the first time and completely loved this restaurant. Service was good but my hesitation to place the 5th star really was more about timing and the intuitive check back. Our main server was polite and did his best but they were busy. I'm sure had we been there with just a bit fewer covers that he and his runners would have impressed just as the food did. We did the Chefs taste option and it was delicious and I recommend they option just to be able to sample so much more of the menu. The chef has created a fantastic journey across their menu and it is was delicious.
We did the prix fixe. It was nice being surprised by the chef's choice. Would absolutely do again. The only thing the pork was over cooked for our taste, It could have needed less time on the grill. We ordered a bottle of red wine and it pair well with every dish. Desserts were perfect, not overly sweet. I look forward to coming again and seeing what else they have to offer.
Where can you get this 10 course tasting menu for $56? Traif in Brooklyn offers a wonderful chefs choice tasting menu and have a unique fusion menu with incredible dishes. What we had: 1. Seared scallops 2. Red endives, passion fruit, cashews 3. Seared fois gras, rainbow potato, fried egg crispy prosciutto 4. Spicy tuna tartare over tempura eggplants 5. Toasted gnocchi with butternut squash puree and ricotta 6. Pork steak frites 7. Salt and pepper shrimp. Sweet and spicy 8. Chicken wings with Mexican style salsa matca and picked vidalia onions 9. Japanese snapper, bao bun with ginger scallion chimichurri (Mexican style) 10. Bacon ricotta donut w toffee pudding on bottom 11. Moms key lime pie with Ginger mouse The menu was exciting and each dish was unique and filling. They even threw in an extra dessert for us. They also have a sister restaurant called Xixa which is around the block and also features a tasting menu! My favorite dish was the seared scallops, which were cooked to perfection and came with a mouthwatering risotto. If tasting menus aren’t your thing, you can also order a la carte! There is too much selection of dishes. We took the chef selection. In general food is good. Service is great. Atmosphere is nice. Most food are a little bit to the sweet side. Like the pineapple shrimp. Pork ribs. Scallops risotto is a little too soft. Personally I like something less sweet. Overall it is a good bargain for the price to have so much food to try.
We had a wonderful time dining at Traif. Our waiter was incredibly kind and told us the story behind the restaurant once we were seated. Funnily enough, the owner himself is Jewish, but apparently he has a weakness for pork and shellfish so he named his restaurant Traif which is Yiddish for un kosher. We love the subtle touch of irony here, haha! A lot of the items on the menu did indeed include pork and shellfish and everything was DELICIOUS! All of the ingredients used for their creative cocktails are made in house. They even had a bacon fat salt rim on one of the cocktails which was incredible. There were two standout dishes that I liked the most: the tuna tartare with tempura eggplant and the braised short rib sliders. The quality of the tuna was very fresh and the braised short rib sliders just melted in your mouth. The softness of the bun was such a pleasant surprise too. Thank you for a wonderful evening, and I can’t wait to try your other Mexican restaurant next door!
Traif has been on my list for a while, and I finally made it for their chef’s tasting menu — 10 courses paired with natural wines for a total of $105 (before tax + tip). $58 for the food , $47 for the wine pairing. It was well worth it. The experience was thoughtful from start to finish. Every dish had its own unique flair — from the textures to the flavor pairings. The scallops with porcini risotto and pecan brown butter were buttery and rich without being too heavy. The tuna tartare with tempura eggplant stood out — savory, crispy, and full of umami. Even the fried snapper with bao buns and kimchi was an unexpected twist that just worked. The chicken and mushroom tinga lettuce wraps had bright citrus notes that balanced the richness perfectly. The pork ribs with strawberries were a Wild combo, but somehow it hit. Every dish felt creative but still rooted in comfort. For dessert : bacon donuts (zeppoles) and the key lime pie with five-spice were the kind of bites you slow down for. Sweet, nostalgic, a little playful. The staff here was on point. Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely into the food and wine they’re serving. The wine pairings (5 total) were all natural wines — we started with white, moved to skin-contact orange, rosé, red, and finished with a dessert wine. Each one made sense with the course, and none felt forced. My only minor critique: A couple of dishes leaned on the sweeter side — depending on your palate, that might not be for everyone. But nothing felt out of balance or overdone. Overall, Traif is an incredible deal for a multi-course tasting with wine in NYC. The vibes are cozy, the food is thoughtful, and it’s clear the kitchen cares about the details. It’s the kind of spot you go to when you want to treat yourself without breaking the bank. Highly recommend doing the tasting menu. And already planning on going back!
I visited Traif on a very busy Saturday evening shift so your service experience might be very different if you visit on a quiet weekday. We tried the set menu, the pricing is amazing, $58/p for an eight course meal (that’s about $80/p after tax and 20% tip before drinks of course). Some of the dishes were good including the scallop risotto, but others felt like too many different flavors. Ex. The gnocchi with coconut, mushrooms, spices, etc. Also some of the dishes were lukewarm or cold. Ex. The pork. And the presentation was not there. (I might be asking too much for a $58 meal). My biggest issue was with the speed. We felt like we were being rushed as they have to go through 8 courses in less than 2hrs and turn tables. Some courses came before we were done with the previous one. The service level felt more like a diner. In some ways it was like an America tapas place without the relaxed atmosphere. It will help the restaurant to reduce the number of courses to four or five (still charge the same price) so the quality of dishes can improve, severs are not rushing and costumers can slowdown and savor the chef’s vision.
We got there early for our reservation which we don’t expect to be seated but we were hardly even acknowledged, only told to go back outside but that she took our name (we come to find it was the manager). When it came time for our reservation someone came out and said he never even knew we were there. By the time we were seated and had the first contact with a server we were already 30 mins past our reservation time. We definitely can look past those things because we understand how busy it can get… however…We had a gift certificate that our friends purchased for us and when we gave it to the server the manager came out and interrogated us on how we got this saying she would never have printed it this way. We felt embarrassed and unwelcome. I was searching through my text messages to find more proof that we were not fraudulent. But we definitely wanted to leave by that point. There was one server who did an excellent job and was such a remedy for how unprofessional the manager was but because of this experience I would never go back or recommend it to anyone unless that manager is no longer there. Otherwise, There is a lot of food included in the chef’s selection and my favorite was the caprese with lime and peaches and least favorite was the rigatoni. The tuna eggplant tempura was really good, the pork belly wraps were good, the polenta scallops were just okay - I think the polenta just didn’t taste as fresh and the scallops took that on. the fois gras was creative to me because it tasted just like a bacon egg and cheese…The shrimp and ribs were good, and the duck was good, but the deserts were again just okay, kinda tasted like melted ben & jerrys. And the donuts were good but way too heavy and fried after all that food. But overall I would rate the food much higher than the service. 5 stars for the server that helped us !!
This was an interesting experience in a small restaurant at the foot of the Williamsburg bridge! I will start by sharing my thoughts on the plates I ordered. I started with the Shishito peppers dish which was delicious. A combination of shishito peppers and watermelon was a perfect balance of sweet and savory! 9 out of 10. Following that was the scallops served over risotto : highly disappointing. It came recommended by the server and although I rarely discredit a server based on their taste these scallops were extremely salty and a tad over cooked (taste as if the scallops were reheated). Risotto was ok but the focal point of the dish was the scallops 2/10. Lastly the tuna tartare over tempura eggplant was pretty good. Another great balance of sweet and savory as the chef drizzled a sweet tamarind syrup over the 4 bite size pieces. 8/10. All in all the food was solid, but for the scallops to be the most expensive dish we ordered, that made for a disappointing experience. I should have known better to not order scallops at a place that’s not a known Seafood place. I would rate my experience a 6 out of 10. Service was friendly, attentive and efficient. I’m not sure if this would be a place I would return to but maybe I need to sleep on it and see how I fell in a few weeks. Sorry no pictures of the tuna tartare but all the food was plated nicely.
Great service and vibes. Food however was mediocre. It’s a very affordable pre fixe for a reason… you get 8 entrees and 2 desserts. Each “entree” is a small plate (tapa style) shared between your group… as opposed to each person getting their own small plate despite paying their own $59pp. Loved the rib and scallop. Great panna cotta and doughnut. Most entrees missed. The pasta tasted like out of a box, including the sauce. The fried shrimp was something I could’ve gotten from Panda Express. Most dishes were overly sauced - couldn’t even taste the tartare!
Food was fantastic. Had the tasting and the plates the chef selected were excellent. Really enjoyed the Gnocchi and the ribs were incredible. Service on the other hand left much to be desired. While they were very nice, service was inattentive, scattered and confusing. As a “shared plates” approach we had to ask multiple times for our plates to be changed to not mix flavors around. Arrived 15 mins early and still had to wait an extra 30 mins to be seated which wasn’t great. Front of house seemed extremely disorganized. Overall, I’d still recommend as the food saves the experience but not sure I’d be back.
I’m mainly taking off points because you guys charged a %20 more for the service and we were only two people, which I heard NY charges that for a party of six? It was an extra $30 that we payed and I think that was just too much in total, I would’ve preferred to choose how much I wanted to pay. We had the chef’s menu for like $56-ish each? The food was mostly very good, especially the tuna tartare was amazing but in general, nothing too remarkable. Ribs with blueberries was tasty, scallop with the rice(i don’t remember if it was a porridge or risotto or what) was okay. Foie gras had lost itself with the egg unfortunately. Deserts were also meh for my taste buds. Cocktails were not good imo. But thanks for the amazing server!
9 dishes plus 2 dessert for chef’s choice menu, $55 for each person. Each course is in one plate. Honestly I person don’t like it. Most of the dishes have heavy oil and heavy salt. The chef is trying to do some interesting food by mixing cold and hot food, fruits and meat. Some are fine and some are not acceptable. To eat watermelon with scallion is a disaster… 20% mandatory tips, the reason is that they just reopened from COVID. Well I wish I had a choice.
I was excited to try Traif after having an amazing meal at its sister restaurant, Xixa. However, the food at Traif was overwhelmingly salty, oily, and overly spiced. The fusion of flavors felt mismatched and didn’t work for me. It’s rare for me to walk away from a restaurant thinking the food was bad, but this was one of those times.
The first time I came here less than a year ago with my bf, I had a wonderful experience doing the chef selection menu. However, this time when i came back with my family of 5, it was the opposite. First few dishes that came out, was all served on one plate and was barely enough to feed all of us. I have photos from the last time, and it definitely was not 5 portions. What took me out, was that the foie gras came with one egg???? For 5 of us? I had to speak up at that moment. The staff apologized and did send out an extra dish and dessert. But what if i didn’t speak up? Better off serving one plate a person than family style. Sorry, but i wont be coming back anymore
Don’t waste your time or money on this so-called fusion fast food. The tasting menu with one drink and service fee came to about $100, and the moment the fried chicken and frozen burger hit the table my brain actually shrank a little. I didn’t even touch the burger and fries, the staff enthusiastically packed them for me, so I had one more bag that I can put just on the floor with my own bag. Every dish had to be shared between two people, even the dessert! There’s no real kitchen, everything’s cooked behind the bar, and the whole meal felt like sitting in a smoke cloud. One of the most frustrating dining experiences I’ve had in New York. I would spend my money on Panda Express if I could choose again. The person recommended this restaurant on RedNote, death row for you and your uber driver!!!!
I am so shocked by this restaurant's ethics. I made a reservation for New Year's Eve, it was a unique menu at $150 per person - without any further details. During the reservation process, I was asked to specify if I had any dietary restrictions. I then mentioned that I am pregnant. Following this, the restaurant sent me an email asking me to review the menu and see whether I am comfortable skipping certain courses—but they will not be able to offer substitutions. When I read the menu, I saw that I couldn't eat nearly 50% of the dishes. That was becoming a really expensive $150 dinner! Given the situation, I exceptionally requested a cancellation. Traif accepted, but they actually kept $70 cancellation fee, and now they're refusing to refund me. They offered to convert it into a gift card, but I live in France, and I explicitly stated that I wouldn't be able to use it. Now they've been ghosting me for the past 10 days. It seems this restaurant only cares about money. Traif, next time, don't ask about dietary restrictions if you can't do anything about it. And I'm actually sorry for you you'd rather keep $70 than refund a pregnant woman who can't eat your $150 meal.
