Went it right at 8am at opening, we were the first to get on the main pyramids. I recommend doing 7 then 2 then 1, then the rest. From 7 we saw lots of howler monkeys, closer to 1 we saw lots of spider monkeys in many occasions. You also hear howler monkeys often which is incredible! Lots of birds and unbeatable views.

Deep im the jungle but for me it was worth it. There are only a few people you have a lot of space and you can climb on the top of every pyramid.

It should be the biggest Maya site we visited during our road trip on Yucatán Peninsula, but this didn’t give us most shocking. The reason is most part of the pyramid are still buried underground and you won’t able to see it. I hope someday, these pyramid can be excavated, like Uxmal or Chichén Itza. I will still give 5 star, because I respectful to ancient civilizations. Also one thing interesting, every pyramids are allowed to climb. But you should be very very be careful.

Nice paths through the jungle, also suitable for persons that have an issue with uneven surfaces. Although you'll have to be able to walk longer distances! They provide a lot of information right next to the structures and exposits and as of 12/2025 they let you enter the different buildings and climb up the pyramides which is extremely nice and gives you a great view above the tree tops :) We've spend 3 hours there to explore by ourselves without a guide.

This place is massive. Try to get here early as possible. Bring water and snacks. The road was amazingly great with zero bumps and pot holes. Wildlife around. We didn’t get a guide but could be nicer if we have hired one at the gate,

Calakmul Ruins is an extraordinary and unforgettable place that feels like a true hidden treasure deep in the Mexican jungle. Visiting Calakmul is a unique experience because it is far less crowded than many other ancient Mayan sites, allowing you to fully appreciate its history and natural surroundings. As you make your way through the dense forest, the sounds of wildlife and the sense of isolation make the journey feel like an adventure. The ruins themselves are incredibly impressive, with massive pyramids rising above the jungle canopy. Climbing Structure II, one of the tallest Mayan pyramids ever built, is a highlight. From the top, the view stretches endlessly across the rainforest, making it easy to imagine how powerful and important Calakmul once was. The detailed stone carvings, plazas, and temples reflect the sophistication of the ancient Mayan civilization and give visitors a deep sense of connection to the past. Overall, Calakmul Ruins is an amazing destination for anyone interested in history, culture, or nature. The peaceful atmosphere, rich archaeological significance, and breathtaking views make it a truly memorable experience and one that feels both inspiring and humbling.

First of all it is worth every KM you drive and step you take. Just an incredible archaeological site. You can climb up the structures and get an amazing view over the jungle. You even get to see some apes. There weren't a lot of people, but in the next few years this will probably change due to the Mayan Train. The road is asphalted, there is no more road work. But still it takes about 1 1/2 hours for the 60km.

Due to el tren Maya, the road to Calakmul is a breeze to drive on now. Unfortunately that also means more tourists. That being said, visiting the ruins of Calakmul is definitely still an adventure, as the nearest town of Xpujil is 2+ hours away. Once there, the sites facilities have been completely renovated, with a new parking lot, toilets, ticket office and a very nice small museum including some great sites. The walkways are easily accessible and the structures are the most impressive I've ever seen. Add wild monkeys, toucans and even a wild tapir to complete the experience! The only downside is the walkways and maps are pretty difficult to wrap your head around, so getting lost is pretty easy, though highly recommended if you have the time :-)

Drive there is easy now - a new road had been built, but it is still long. 60km through the jungle there and back 30km/h, at times 40-60 km/h. On 27th km there is a 1200m loop through the jungle, I recommend you take it, but walk slowly, quietly and be receptive. You may see a lot of animals that way. We got the full experience with a snake rattling at us - maybe not entirely preferable for many. The site itself is epic and the main climb is totally worth it. You'll get well above the jungle. Monkeys in the trees are a plenty. If you're hot, tired, you may skip the Muralia part, nothing there really. Bring some water, it's about 2hrs on the site.

Not the easiest place to reach but the visit is definitely worth it! We left at 3am from Campeche and after a 6 hrs drive we reached this archeological site in the middle of the jungle where you can climb on the pyramids and enjoy a beautiful view of the area. I also suggest you to get a guide and go for a walk in the jungle where you might find monkeys and crocodiles

The site is absolutely amazing. Well worth the 2 h drive. The road has been refurbished so it’s a very smooth drive there with free parking right out the front. We arrived at 6 am and the park was already open. Signage inside the park could be a little better and there are no toilets in the park at this point (currently being built). It’s a lot of construction around the entrance area but the main site is untouched by this and a fantastic wander with monkeys and all kinds of animals around. Definitely recommend climbing the main pyramids, the sight is breath taking. Take lots to drink as amazingly the site is free of tourist shops and vendors at this point! also they only take cash. Safe travels!

Probably the best ruins you can visit. Climbing on top of the big pyramids is just spectacular and a once in a lifetime experience. It’s a long way to get there, but the road is new and so worth it. A big plus is also that there are nearly no tourists compared to other more popular sites.

This place is magical. I absolutely loved this place, our tour guide Lis was amazing and super friendly. We enjoyed driving through the jungle and making quick stops to admire the many different animals we got to see. Once we reached the ruins we were amazed by the breathtaking views and the enormous size of the site. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to see all of it but it was an experience I will never forget. Please be aware of how dangerous the road is. We saw a car crash into a tree. You do not wanna crash with a tree in the middle of a jungle. Please be careful. The other down side was how loud European tourist are. They took away the peacefulness and charm of this place. Pleaseee be respectful of other tourist and the people who take care of this place.

Unforgettable incredible experience!! You feel you are alone in the jungle with these magnificent ruins. You are still allowed to go up and feel above an endless jungle, you see wildlife and only a few other people.it is so worth it! Go early morning, before small tourist groups and while it is cooler to climb up and down. it is CLOSED on Mondays currently and the entry at km 0 is 5am, km 20 5.30am and the ruins at 6am. You have to leave before 1pm. THE ROAD: Yes you have to get there which is something in itself. We decided to enter the road to the reserve as soon as it opened at 5am and it was great, we met multiple birds on our way in. It is bumpy and on the way out they had started some work so it was even more adventurous but if you have an SUV or better you will be fine. Just don't go with a bike or a motorbike.

Truly incredible experience, the journey being part of it. Absolutely unique combination of jungle terrain, wildlife and breathtaking ruins (which you can climb and look over the canopy from). If you have the slightest sense of adventure you absolutely should come here. Yes, there are many potholes along the way, but they honestly aren't that bad. Sadly I think all this will change due to the Tren Maya project. The drive is cumbersome. Constant stopping to let trucks turn or pass by. They are building a train station and hotel near the ruins (so much for being a protected biosphere). I understand the economics behind it but it will inevitably destroy the wildlife. I don't think it'll ever reach the visitor numbers of Chichen Itza, but I imagine it'll only be a matter of months until you can no longer climb the ruins and explore the site with only 20 people around. Most up to date info on opening hours and pricing seems to be here: https://lugares.inah.gob.mx/en/zonas-arqueologicas/zonas/1661-calakmul.html

A great jungle adventure. I was prepared for a really bumpy road and it was rough but not bad. Seen lots of wild turkeys, so colourful. Lots of shade to walk around, mosquitoes were not bad as long as you wear bug spay(Off deep woods). Our guide Roberto was incredible very knowledgeable and great English and Spanish. He knew the history and the flora and fauna. The buildings were very impressive and you could climb 3 of them for spectacular views of the surrounding jungle and buildings. This is a bucket list item you must see. Spider monkey 🐒 and howler monkeys 🐒 everywhere.

Amazing. It truly is an incredible place. It takes you from 2-5 hours walk all around it. The entrance fee is 230mxn total but you have to pay 60 at the first entrance, then 90, and finally 80. Bring sunscreen, water, walking shoes, and umbrella or hat. There are 4 of the tallest pyramids, but you can only climb on 3 of them (in theory). You can get lost very easily, it would be a good idea to download the map before hand. You'll definitely enjoy the time here.

Here's what you need to know before visiting Calakmul (2025): -Total entry cost: 305 MXN (biosphere, obligatory) + 100 MXN (site ticket) = 405 pesos per person -Free shaded parking -No food or drinks sold inside – bring your own -Toilets only at the entrance How to get there: From Highway 186, follow the well-marked turn for Calakmul. After the checkpoint (where you pay 305 MXN), the road continues through the jungle. It’s paved/cemented but has curves and some potholes. Easy to drive. The checkpoint is also your last stop for gas, snacks, and water – stock up! We stayed in Xpujil, 2 hours from the site – perfect base. Coming from Campeche takes 5–7 hours, so staying nearby is a good idea. The site is deep in the jungle, peaceful and magical. Easy walking trails in the forest, but steep climbs on the pyramids – 100% worth it for the view! Tours are available (transport + guide + tickets for ~2400 MXN), but we went independently with a rental car and it was super manageable. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something authentic and less touristy. Totally worth the effort if you have time!

We were surprised by the fee right at the beginning of the road after leaving the main road. As foreigners, we had to pay 305 pesos per person plus 90 pesos. This is addition to the 100 pesos per person entrance fee, which is paid at the park entrance. Only cash! The road is relatively well-maintained, but the walk is long. Restrooms are only available at the entrance. The first pyramid is 800 meters away. There were brief directions, but only one map of the entire complex. Unfortunately, the information was very limited in English. Unfortunately, we didn't see any of the animals, except for a peacock turkey. At the entrance, it says that you're not allowed to climb pyramids, but it wasn't a problem with the two largest ones. It took us three hours to see everything.
