Stopped here after touring Paisley Park so I had to order the Purple Rain cocktail. It was delicious, potent and great presentation. The French onion soup was very good, I also had the lobster roll. That was perfectly seasoned and was served with the most delicious, in house sea salt Potato chips. It was more than enough food and I had to bring g home the leftovers. My husband had the Margarita flat bread made with all fresh ingredients. He got the lunch special French onion soup and the prime rib French dip. He loved all of it!
I've ate here many times over the past 8 years and this is one of my favorite restaurants. Presently reduced the menu, but Axel's never disappoints in a clean and inviting restaurant that looks nothing like the interior of a casual theme restaurant. Had steaks, prime rib, soup, salads, and sandwiches. My last visit was Sunday dinner and I ordered an appetizer and a burger. The bacon cheeseburger which is on a brioche bun at $16 was excellent and is cheaper than Houlihan's, TGI Friday's, and the money goes to a local business and not to Houston or Dallas. Finally, went and had Thanksgiving lunch and sat at the bar watching football. Bar service was nothing short of amazing and I have to be honest and say that if you're into mixed drinks this is the place to go because you actually get a true pour of alcohol and the price I think was $7 for a Tito's and orange juice? The Thanksgiving meal started with a salad, and the main course consisted of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and last but not least cranberry sauce and a slice of pie.
Axel's was a nice evening out. Quit great service, The popovers are tasty 😋, the Filet minion melts in your mouth. Delicious garlic mash and vegetables. Everything was so good. Can't wait to go back. Our server was great she was attentive and fun.
My boy friend and I dined here after a whirlwind tour of Paisley Park and thrifting at Goodwill in Chan. I must say that as a girl in the south, I had never had Wall eye, so I was excited! We had a wonderful, gracious server who greeted us promptly. I was not familiar with the pop overs, but she and my better half described them to me. They were lovely as described. One serving of them was enough between us. We shared two salads. One house, one caesar, and a side of the bull bites. They were absolutely delightful. They had 2 dipping sauces which were the homemade horse radish and the bernaisse. We thoroughly enjoyed those and would recommend them! Then, of course we ordered the parmessean crusted wall eye and split that. The piece du resistance was definitely the Bailey's cake. We were hoping to have the apple cake with Ice cream and caramel sauce. But what an incredible dessert this was . Top notch for sure! Our server was as well . 5 star 🌟 service, food and atmosphere! I can see why my better half raved about this place for sure! We definitely intend upon returning here. We saw the ad for Mother's Day brunch . I live in SC. If Mom visits here for a special occasion, we will no doubt bring her and Dad here !
Came here for the first time to attend Easter brunch 2019. Great variety of food including prime rib, crab & penne, custom made omelets, cheesy hash browns, delicious breaded walleye, and more. Plus for 10 dollars more you can get unlimited mimosas which sadly I couldn't partake in. I'm coming back next year!
Excellent food, great atmosphere and attentive service. Thanks Michael! Sat in Prince's booth...was amazing!
I really like going out to eat at Axel's in Chanhassen. They have really good appetizers. They also have excellent prime rib. They have a full bar if one was looking to have a beer or drink with their dinner! I have been here multiple times and have never been disappointed. As for dessert they have a tray they'll bring around to show you what they have and you choose then they'd bring that out! I will definitely go back!
Lovely dining experience! The horseradish hash brown and bone-in ribeye were both winners!
Still doing it right after many years in business. Service is speedy and friendly and they have answers when you have questions. They will try to make you whatever you want if what you want isn't on their menu, just ask. The popovers are still complimentary and delicious.
The food was amazing and the staff was even better came with a party of 40 with Wounded Warrior Project they all thanked us for our service after dinner and it was just a great experience
Years of dinners... it's like dinner at an old friends house. Onion rings haven't changed. Ask for Carrie... and have the Baileys cake...Sit in Carrie's section she is a legend
Loved the Prince booth and the service was amazing. But the food was EXTRAORDINARY and that bread was everything!!
We went there to see Prince's booth and ordered desserts. Their slice of carrot cake is gigantic and delicious.
Beautiful place, we got a starter and that was fire!!! Service was so good, quick. Real candle at table. Low lighting
Always a good time and good food at Axel's... And always enjoy hanging out in Prince's booth... O(+>
We had such nice servers and one of them was shadowing 🥹 they were both super sweet and kept checking back and even refilling sodas :D I had the spicy chicken penne, it was SO good. I've had their burgers too, all their food is super good. I've never had a bad experience.
My sister and I came here for dinner tonight. It got pretty busy shortly after we sat down and the bartender was awesome throughout our whole experience. Between taking care of the bar guests, making and pouring drinks for the dining room, and maintaining the bar area, she was hustling like crazy but still super friendly and was having conversations with everyone. A really nice experience overall!
Enjoy the supper club feel. Great place to have classic supper and food. There are great classic drinks from the mid west old days and a good beer selection. Staff knows how to work a table and area with the right amount of attention to customer and perfect attention to detail.
A foursome went to Axels before a performance at the Chanhassen. We made the waitress aware of our timeline, and she was very attentive. The food was excellent! The other couple had French dips and they said they were the best they'd had, and they were huge. We were all happy with our choices. Excellent food, superb service.
My mother and I’s go to lunch spot. Currently transitioning to Moe’s Charhouse and they did take some favorites off the menu, but everything was still great last time we went. I haven’t tried anything I don’t like here yet. The Caesar salad is crazy good, idk what the do to the dressing and croutons but do please carry on.
Ate dinner on a Friday night after visiting Hackamore Brewing Company for several beers. The restaurant was not busy at 6:00 this day. This location was previously an Axel’s restaurant but had been sold. We each ordered a Brandy Manhattan which was good and reasonably priced. I ordered a Walleye sandwich with chips which was very good. My partner had a Prime Rib with Au Gratin Potatoes. His meal was great and well enjoyed. Service was friendly and efficient. I would definitely return in the future. This is a great alternative for dinner if attending the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre for a show that does not include dinner in the ticket price.
We hosted a small wedding rehearsal dinner in Axel's private room, and it was phenomenal. The food and service were incredible. Everyone enjoyed their meals and were especially delighted by the popovers. It was fun that the kids could color on the paper covering the table. We really appreciated that we were able to reserve the private dining room without an added fee or food/beverage minimum. Wonderful experience all around!
Update: After having a disappointing first experience at Axel’s I decided to give it another try. This time I tried dinner. Again, the host was extremely friendly and welcoming. The server, Ashley J was very busy bit still took great care of our table. She was friendly, funny, and polite. The food was so much better this time around. Not sure I’ll be back for happy hour but the steak here is definitely worth the stop. I was excited to try Axel’s happy hour but unfortunately it was not a great experience. Walking in, it felt very clicky with the few customers that were present. We sat up at the bar and we were the only people bellied up except for one other customer. The bartender was carrying on a conversation with this customer until the customer finally had to motion to him to greet us. Another employee then greeted us and asked how we were doing, prompting the bartender to turn his head to greet us )he was standing 4 feet from is). His following interactions were very transactional and short. We had to ask for a happy hour menu and then sat in silence until our happy hour appetizers arrived, which took an incredible amount of time considering the place was empty. The deviled eggs had a very odd taste and consistency. The whites were very chewy and rubbery- indicating they were old. The filling was sour and I found a chunk of something white in one of the eggs- it was a hard ball that resembled cheese but it was only in one out of many. Potato skins tasted old and were bone-dry as the cheese topping had every ounce of moisture broiled out of it. The steakhouse sliders were the shining star. The host was great. She was welcoming and friendly. Beyond her, it was like being at a bar in a dystopian future. I overheard that new owners were taking over so I’ll return to give it another shot.
Had a good meal here last night. Not too busy on a Tuesday but our drinks took a while. I love the swing music jazz they play, makes me think of the Rat pack or something. My spicy chicken penne pasta was great, very creamy. The appetizers (walleye fingers, bull balls or something, and fried shrimp) were very bar like. My Caesar salad was good too. Once I finally got it my martini was excellent!
A Caesar salad and the whiskey sirloin. The flavoring was great but my steak was bad but my partners was amazing!
Normally, I'd give it a 5 star rating all across the board. They have the best Friday Fish Fry- 2 breaded shrimp and 2-3 breaded fresh fish with green beans and either French fries or a horse-radish mashed potato patty. I asked to make the fish crispy, but it came back soggy! The rest was great. Knowing this restaurant hardly ever screws up, I called the Manager to let the Chef know so no one else is disappointed and doesn't go back. He immediately wanted to make it right by either redoing my order, or refunding the price. It was take-out and I paid cash, so he kindly told me I could come back the next Friday and get a free Friday Fish Fry. Things can happen in the restaurant business. What makes a great dining place is not just the place, but someone who knows the value of Customer Service. I would recommend this place without hesitation...oh, and you get a free Popover with honey butter as well.
Janet was the best! She took the time to explain the menu. Her approach was very warm and inviting. The food was good and my entire party enjoyed their food. I had a cocktail called Purple Rain, and it was very good; if you are a rum drinker, you will love this drink, The best surprise was I got to see the booth that one and only Prince would sit at when he visited this establishment. The only thing I wished they had some vegetarian options on the menu. However, please do not let that stop you from dining at thos fine establishment.
The go to spot for me and my wife for all birthdays and anniversaries! Always a fantastic experience. The only reason I gave this 4 stars was the quality of meat on our last visit. It was cooked perfectly and the staff was amazing but the steak was no better than a frozen box steak. Hopefully just a bad batch of meat and not the new normal.
Janet, our waitress was excellent. Had walleye fingers, pop-overs, wedge salad and cream of chicken soup. Great food, except the soup was WAY too salty. New owners put big screen tv's in the dining room of a classic supper club. Great way to take the atmosphere from what was 5 star down to 3 star. TV's in the bar area is acceptable, but do not belong in the dining room.
Atmosphere was great, for a pricey restaurant the food was not great, especially the au gratin potatoes which came in cubes instead of layers. The service was a bit slow even though they were not that busy. When I say slow we were there for over one and a half hours. When we got there we sat there a while before they took our order or brought water to our table. I was very disappointed because I had heard great things about this place. Maybe I just caught a bad night to be there? Who knows… I’m not sure if I’ll give this place another try.
The salad was delicious, the Bleu cheese dressing was Awesome. I ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. The chicken was good but the Alfredo sauce was missing the cream, the garlic and the Parmigiano. I basically has a lightly seasoned butter sauce; I even had my wife try it to get her opinion. Her pasta dinner also was bland. It's possible that Axel's may Excell as a Steak and Seafood house but pasta is definitely Not their strongest meal choice.
Went there for a company function. They placed all of us in a spacious area. Drinks were well made. Food was well prepared. Staff was friendly and helpful. The burger option was a little overcooked and dry. The chicken parm needed a little favor. The chicken was tender and juicy. The walleye fish sandwich was tasty but could have been a little larger portion. Desserts were a mile high and very tasty. Would go again when in town.
Feels like a old fashion supper club. felt a bit lonely when we arrived but someone eventually greeted us. I was expecting more of a fine dining exp. I heard this place was awesome, just feels like it might be slipping a bit. Good fir a biz meeting maybe not a special occasion.
The best part was the service by our server, Marisa. She was polite and very friendly. Mixed reviews from our table on the food. Not a lot of choices and most are expensive. Some of our food tasted better then others, we liked the spicy penne, though it really wasn't spicy. The Axel burger was underwhelming. And the decor was dated. We went on a Saturday evening and it wasn't that busy. I would probably actually give it 3.5 stars if I could.
I want it to be great every-time but something always falls short. Neither the food or drink just doesn’t hit at a 5 ⭐️ but there’s good room for improvement and the popovers are fabulous.
This was an overall disappointing experience. The fish was great, but the sides and apps seemed lackluster. Our server was also not super friendly, but everyone has a bad day and frankly I'm amazed most servers keep it together. All our meals were supposed to come with salads and we never got them and we had to ask to get a price reduction as a result. The mashed potatoes I had were room temp at best. The portions are great for the price, just not a great experience this time out.
I think this place USED to be great. They serve popovers before/with the meal. Normally popovers are delicious when served hot, these were not. The Rissoto tasted as if it had been reheated. My wife's summer salad berries were 2-3 days over ripe. The waitress was pretty friendly however. Maybe she lingered a little to long as we were having private conversations. In the end, the checks were confused and my sister was charged for one of my chardonnays. I had to ask for the server to perhaps comp something for the errors, which they did end up doing.
The restaurant has a private booth for Prince and was supposedly one of his personal favorites. We asked if we could sit in his private booth and they obliged with no problem, that was really cool! Service the entire time was good. The food left a lot to be desired. We ordered a salad for an appetizer and they served the salad and the food at the same time. Food was not really hot. The Ciopppino was supposed to have fish, clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, and crab. There was no fish, crab, or clams. When I asked she said the no longer give pieces they cook it in the broth... French onion soup had untoasted very soggy bread. The beet salad was good. Drinks were horrible. I would go in take pics of the booth and leave...
We have been eating at Axel’s for years. It has always been a family favorite. We have now been here three times since they were purchased by the new owners and we all agreed we were done. The food is greasy and bland. Even the French Onion soup was greasy! The meals arrived cold, dry and overcooked. And the famous popovers? They now charge you for them and they were rubbery and tough. Sad to see this.
The food is terrible. My burger was burnt with no seasoning, which was accompanied by a heaping pile of salty carmelized onions. The fries were medicore, and the pop always seemed to be flat. My friend had the shrimp that was overcooked and beyond crunchy. Bull bites were chewy and under seasoned. Very disappointing. The atmosphere is fun, and the service was decent. But they REALLY need to fix their menu.
We started out being seated in a more open area, and asked if we could sit in a half booth/ chair section. The hostess said no because that wasn't anyone's section. However, after 15 minutes, she sat another group there. The food was very average. One of my friends ordered pasta and was supposed to get a popover. When halfway through our meal, we asked the server if we could get one, and she said "well, technically you should get one". Then we told her to bring it, which ended up doing so. She did give us all one, when we asked her for plates she said she would bring them, but never did. We asked another server, who didn't bring anything either. I finally went to another table and got them myself. When I did, a hostess was coming to sit someone at the table, and gave me a look. The pasta was not good, as my friend asked how it was prepared, and the server stated, just how it sounds... My friend ordered it and was not tasty. The whole experience was not good or enjoyable with the uninterested staff, to the bland, tasteless food. No need to return.
Dined on a Tuesday night. The GOOD… Not overly busy. Our server was great! PLoved the atmosphere / music. and the raspberry martini. The BAD. I ordered sirloin medium rare, it came well done (no pink). But it was tender. My asparagus was cold and tough. My husbands sirloin was tough and overcooked. Now for the REALLY BAD. The women’s bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Reminded me of a side of the road gas station where the restroom is out back and they give you a key. It was VERY dirty (toilets, sink, floors) Rust around the sink, toilet and fixtures. Toilets and Countertop were so stained they looked like it hadn’t been replaced in 20 years. I was horrified. It was awful.
I was extremely disappointed with our experience at Axel's Restaurant in Chanhassen. We came here for a birthday celebration. For high end supper club prices, I expected excellent service and food. The service was mediocre at best and I believe this was due to understaffing. Our server seemed to be rushed and stressed out from a previous group and was standoffish and cold to us. She warmed once she observed we were a friendly group, but it took a lot of effort on our part. The food was okay at best and troubling at worst. We ordered an appetizer of mussels to share and I was appalled that half of the mussels were either closed or had broken shells (the ones pictured all had closed shells). Anyone who knows anything about cooking shellfish knows this is unacceptable (if not unsafe) and these never should have been brought to the table. If they did not have good mussels they should have taken them off the menu. The main courses were okay, but not worth the $400 bill. The prime rib was a bit bland and was of the quality and flavor I would expect from a greasy spoon diner. The horseradish potatoes dish was unimpressive. The only high point was the complimentary cupcake desert, but unfortunately did not really begin to make up for the mussel appetizer, quality of main courses, level of service given the exorbitant prices. In summary, I do not recommend Axel's and do not plan to ever return to any Axel's in the future.
Went there last night with my husband order this didn’t eat it tell later that day as I was having back problems this is so hard to bite into and my husband got sick from his in very disappointed as I was looking forward to it
Awful burger and fries, barely got any fries, burger was overdone and dry. Dissappinting, not worth the price. Not going here again.
We arrive and get seated on a Wednesday night at Axel’s in Chanhassen. -20 minutes goes by before our waiter comes to take our drink orders. -Another 20+ minutes go by before he comes back with our drinks and takes our food orders. He got one drink order wrong; she ordered a white wine and he brought her a red. -OVER AN HOUR goes by and we have to ask where our food is. Apparently a reservation of 40 came in right before us, and overwhelmed the kitchen. We weren’t made aware of this, and they obviously didn’t staff accordingly knowing this huge group was coming in. -We get our food finally. It was nothing to right home about; 2 of 8 orders were incorrect but we didn’t mention anything because it would just take another hour to fix. -One friend nicely asked for her bill (we’d been there for 2.5 hours at this point) and our waiter goes and I quote: “it can’t be like that. I have high anxiety and if it’s going to be that way it just gets worse.” And walks away. 🤯 -20+ minutes later he passes our checks out and 4/8 of them are wrong. We were not given any discount or free appetizer for having to wait over an hour for our food and the service provided was terrible. I will never be going back and recommend you don’t either.
Will not be dining here again… Got the walleye and it was very bland and soggy. Food in general was sub par at best. The atmosphere is unnerving. This restaurant does not know what it wants to be; it has pub vibes on one side, and an almost “fine dining vibe” on another. It’s giving unsettling supper club. All of the staff seemed miserable. Our server was quite snappy at us, despite us being one of her only tables of the few souls in the building. THERE IS BLACK MOLD IN THE BATHROOM. Overall takeaways: This restaurant seems like the type who would spit in your meal. But, if you are daring enough to waste money here, know that you’ll at least enjoy the popovers.
The service and the food were terrible. I basically paid $120 for a popover (which I had to ask for) and a drink. The risotto was absolutely gross. I took three bites and had to leave the rest on the plate. The waiter didn’t enter our appetizer or my wine and we had to ask twice to have it delivered. I’m pretty sure everything we ordered was microwaved. I was not impressed or satisfied with anything brought to our table.
We’d visit this place fairly regularly, and so we checked it out after a hiatus and learning about the management/brand switchover. Things changed. Popovers were hard and stale; the Caesar salad was overdressed, and didn’t think to ask for it on the side since it’d historically been balanced; and their ‘risotto’ was overcooked to the point of looking like minute rice, plus was over salted. I was also sad to learn their happy hour food, i.e., the once-loved deviled eggs and others, were only offered during happy hours. In regard to service: the longtime bartender was swamped and struggled to keep up while someone (new manager?) looked on for a half hour before dabbling in to help out, if only temporarily. I truly hope this place will learn and improve, but I won’t return until that point, nor will recommend it after seeing the downfall and lack of staff support from the team.
This restaurant is a reopening of the old Axl's, and some of the new menus even have the old name in the text. We knew Axl's from when our kids were small twenty years ago, so we were curious. I had a Korean bowl with chicken, which was absolutely awful. I write this having recently coming back from L.A.'s Koreatown with those flavors in my mouth. My bowl was a bunch of sauteed vegetables like carrots and broccoli. The chicken slices were generic. But, aside from the whole dish floating in a sea of some oversalted, Hoisin or other sauce, I failed to find anything of interest. Without the chicken add on, I can't imagine anyone being able to eat the vegetables alone. My wife had a walleye sandwich. There seemed to be nothing memorable about it all. The service was good, the atmosphere didn't add to the dining experience, as it was a largely empty hall on an early Friday night. I
