I love this restaurant! From the moment you walk in the door, it is all beauty. The staff is so welcoming and attentive. I had the best fried chicken of my life and the mashed potatoes, creamed corn, turnip greens and biscuits were unbelievable. And the gravy!!! The fried chicken is boneless, but has the flavor of chicken on the bone. They have fun cocktails and a great wine list. If you are looking for perfect comfort food, this is it. Highly recommend. Be sure to make a reservation.
The food was outstanding and Lia was such a kind spirit and very knowledgeable of the menu and helpful as well! We ordered the pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, the fried chicken entree and the bouillabaisse entree. Everything we ordered was perfect and flavorful with a nice presentation. Don’t skip dessert either! This is definitely my favorite dining experience in Charleston!
Southern restaurant with delicious food. The fried green tomato appetizer had a super crisp outside, the tomato itself still had a bite to it and the chutney relish was tangy and delicious. Deviled eggs also very good, hard to go wrong with a deviled egg but this one was very good. The bread service is homemade bread and was warm and crispy, yumm. For mains we had the special fried catfish another hit. Batter was crunchy and the fish was tender and perfectly cooked. , red rice was great and green beans were crisp and brought some freshness to an otherwise heavy dish. The bacon was unnecessary for me as I liked the freshness of the beans and didn’t need that addition. The other main we tried was the blackened catfish. A very different preparation than the special, lightly battered and a little thicker cut. Fish was perfectly cooked and went well with the accompaniments. Every bite we had was great. There were so many other items on the menu we wanted to try we will definitely be back. They have two seating areas, the main area in the front with the bar and a second dining room in the back. Unfortunately we were seated in the back dining room which is banquet hallish. If you can, try to sit in the front room, it has charm and windows and is much more inviting.
Came here for the first time on Valentine’s day and had the absolute best experience! Seth was our waiter and he was so kind! He was also very knowledgeable about the menu and gave fantastic recommendations! We got the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and my boyfriend and I both agreed it was the best thing we have ever ordered from any restaurant ever! Everything about this place was 10/10. Highly recommend if you get the chance to eat here!!! Thank you again, Seth, for making our experience here remarkable!
This restaurant was highly recommended by our friends as a must-try spot. Since we were leaving today, we decided to come for lunch. We had been eating Southern food for the past few days, and everything had been quite salty, so we were a little worried before tasting the dishes here. From the appetizers, everything was already impressive. The egg roll, especially, had a unique mix of spicy sauce and peach that worked surprisingly well. Both the entrée I ordered and the one my friend chose were excellent, with rich, fresh flavors. Even the crème brûlée we had for dessert was absolutely perfect. I think I’ll come back to try their dinner menu next time if I get the chance.
All the food was fantastic! The fried green tomatoes were perfectly crispy and savory. The fried chicken and pimento cheese sandwich was tasty and comes with your choice of side. The scallops were cooked perfectly and came with a huge serving of rich, bacon-cream sauce. Service was great and the food came out so fast
Good food, the star was the low country bouillaise which had a great variety of seafood and a lovely broth. The parmesan crusted fish was too basic, I should have ordered something more adventurous but it was "highly recommended".
We had dinner the first night here in Charleston. It was a little cold outside, so we had a bowl of blue crab bisque to warm us up. It worked, mmm. I had flounder for my main meal and my husband had shellfish gumbo. We both enjoyed our meal. We absolutely love fresh seafood!
Loved the food here. I had the grilled flounder, my fiance had the shrimp and grits. Food was very tasty. Service was impeccable. Atmosphere was too busy and noisy. Got there when it opened for lunch.
Our best dinner in Charleston, hands down. Prices were quite reasonable compared to the competition and the portion sizes were large enough to fill up even the hungriest customers. Service was excellent. Table was available right at the time reservation was for. Volume inside was good for conversation.
Tonight's dinner was @magnoliaschs in the French Quarter of Charleston! I decided to go out and splurge a little. 😂 It is a Lowcountry upscale kitchen. Drink: Grand Fashioned Elijah Craig bourbon, Grand Marnier, orange peel, Angostura bitters, Luxurious cherry App: Down South Egg Roll collard greens, chicken, tasso ham, red pepper purée, spicy mustard, peach chutney Entree: Bourbon BBQ Glazed Pork Chop mac & cheese, collard greens, jalapeño cornbread, honey butter This place was pretty amazing! The drink was exactly what I was looking for. Good flavor and straight to the point. The egg roll tasted so good. You could taste all the individual components in it. The sauces were really complimentary to it. It's really crispy! The pork chop was hands down the best I have ever had. Seasoned perfectly, juicy, and cooked to the perfect medium well. The sauce was nice and sticky. The collards had the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy. The cornbread was nice as well. I have no complaints whatsoever. When the waitress came over to ask me how I thought the egg roll was, I dropped it by accident and made a mess. 😂 The atmosphere was amazing. It had a country, old time, and upscale feel. White tablecloths. I REALLY wish I liked seafood.
Went here on my Birthday weekend and it was great! Prompt service, fresh seafood, and a pleasing ambiance! I had the Blue Crab Bisque and the Lowcountry Bouillabaisse. Both were exceptional and the Firefly Arnold Palmer was delicious. It is a little pricey but I would definitely recommend this to anyone going here that wants a romantic or upscale dining experience. I did make reservations so I'm not sure what walk-in availability is like.
My wife and I drove to Charleston to see family and Magnolias was on our list of restaurants to try. I'm glad we did, the food alone was worth the trip. My wife had the buttermilk fried chicken and i had the bourbon BBQ pork chop. The service great and I have ZERO complaints about our experience.
If you want amazing Southern cuisine this is the place to go! From delicious fried chicken to rich shrimp and sausage in gravy over grits the meals are fabulous! Lovely atmosphere, great service, and scrumptious food are to be had here. Make sure to try the sweet tea and the pecan pie for dessert.
My friend and I HAD to visit Magnolias on our recent trip to Charleston. The food was decadent and true southern cuisine. We ordered the fried green tomato appetizer, buffalo chicken salad and low country bouillabaisse. She also opted for the dessert special. All the food was served with generous portions, had excellent flavor and left us both in a food coma. Service was excellent, and we were pleased with the friendliness of the staff. Must try in Charleston💗
Amazing food! The Bourbon BBQ Pork Chop is amazing. I don’t even like Collard Greens, but I liked these. Service was amazing, and we got seated right away! The Crème Brulee was amazinggggg.
Magnolias was great. I sat at the bar and was helped by Brian. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken. It was perfect after a long day of driving up from Florida. Very tasty. The restaurant itself has a great ambiance. The staff was all friendly. Worth a stop in if you’re in the area.
Superb atmosphere. Michelin quality service... combined with proud and deeply southern inspired cooking ... make this one of the, if not, THE best restaurant in Charleston. Do not miss this restaurant! It is absolutely worth your time and money!
Magnolias never disappoints. We were immediately seated near the front window at a cozy table for two. Our server was pleasant and professional, recommending a sandwich that my wife loved. She had the Fried Green Tomato BLT, and I had the Original Simmons. Two delicious sandwiches! The total cost for the two meals, wine, beer, & tip was less than $75.
The food was very good. Our waitress was very attentive. I have an allergy that I have only ever mentioned while ordering drinks due to it usually being a part of various mixtures. After ordering, I noticed that my food was brought out separately, and my allergy mentioned there as well. Never thought of it as being a part of a recipe. I was very thankful for the hospitality and their attention to detail.
Loved everything about our experience at Magnolias! The food was exploding with flavor. I got the vegetarian dinner. I absolutely loved the flavor in this dish. The 2 fried green tomatoes on top had a delicious pimento cheese between them. We also had pecan pie for dessert and being from the south this was by far the best pecan pie I’ve EVER had it is a must try!!
Food was delicious here! Our waiter suggested the bouillabaisse and pecan pie, which were one of the best we’ve had! The scallops and crab cakes were prepared perfectly and tasted really good. Make a reservation and eat here!
Came here after dinner elsewhere because I just had to have the down south egg rolls and wasn’t sure when else on our short trip I would be able to get over there. They are delicious! Also tried a newer chocolate mousse dessert and it was one of my favorite desserts I had in Charleston.
The Fried Green Tomatoes app is practically an entree in itself... white cheddar & caramelized onion grits, country ham, tomato chutney, tomato butter MY OH MY these are the best FGT that I have ever had! You must try them, so much flavor! For my main course the Parmesan Crusted Market Catch was flounder with creek shrimp & jasmine rice pirloo, warm asparagus, sweet corn & tomato salad, citrus beurre blanc and boy was it spectacular! The Spicy Shrimp & Sausage with tasso gravy, creamy white grits was just as amazing.
The food was fantastic. I started with the crab bisque which was excellent and my wife had the watermelon salad (a special) which she said was the best salad she has ever had in her life. I ordered the shrimp and grits which actually had too much black pepper for MY taste but my wife tasted it and loved it. My wife ordered the seafood bouillabaisse which was very very good packed with flavor and tons of different fish and other seafood. We finished with the Red Velvet bread pudding which was topped with a raspberry cheesecake ice cream....this dessert was OUT OF THIS WORLD good. Other than the food, the atmosphere was very nice, and our waitress was wonderful. I will definitely look to come back.
Magnolias in Charleston is a must-visit! The fried chicken was perfectly crispy, Brussels sprouts flavorful, and the watermelon salad so refreshing. They also have great craft cocktails! It was an awesome classy Southern dining experience.
Went for dinner here a month ago. The food was excellent! I had fried green onions over grits for a starter. It was my first time having this and it blew me away. I had to go back and eat this exact meal two days later. We also had the blackened catfish, an egg roll and salmon that melted in my mouth because it was medium rare. You can’t go wrong with whatever you pick. Excellent service and atmosphere.
The food was amazing. Our waiter Slade was knowledgeable, attentive, and funny. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, while still being very upscale. We were not rushed and felt like we could take our time and really relax and enjoy the whole experience. The shrimp and grits were delicious. The pecan pie was amazing and so was the chocolate mousse. Can’t wait till the next time we come back to Charleston.
Not usually one to write reviews, but felt the need to as this was such a lovely experience! Visiting from out of town, we were so happy to be able to snag a last minute lunch reservation. For an upscale restaurant, the vibe is relaxed, friendly, and unpretentious. Our server, Erin, was so kind and attentive from the start and had wonderful recommendations. We had the Fried Green Tomatoes to start, which were out of this world - definitely a more modern, elevated take on the dish. I had the Vegetarian plate & my boyfriend got the Parmesan Crusted Fresh Catch. We were both very happy - the dishes are well seasoned without being overly seasoned and really lean into the natural flavors of the fresh ingredients. Overall, you can really feel how much the staff cares about providing their guests with a good experience. Bonus that they were very reassuring about being able to accommodate food allergies. We are already looking forward to our next Charleston visit so we can return to Magnolias!
One of the high end restaurants in Charleston, tablecloth and all but with some leeway in terms of dress code. No sleeveless nor beach attire but other than that they're not extremely strict. Service is professional and the servers are familiar with the ins and outs. The food is definitely quality. It's Southern inspired, or should I say, Modern Southern. Creative little twists of the classics without losing the soul. The fried chicken was properly done with a very good mildly sweet + tangy collard greens sans the unpleasant smell. Shrimp and grits were definitely proper with a nice BBQ flavor. The Bouillabaisse has a good of seafood and sausages, without the fishy smell and paired with nice corn base. Halibut was mild but the sauce more than makes up for it For appetizers, I would suggest the scallops and fried green tomatoes. The prices are fair considering the place, location, abd serving size. Definitely recommended. No dedicated parking just like most restaurants here, you'll have to find your own
Went with my husband for dinner here while visiting Charleston from Richmond VA! This was a 10/10 meal, possibly best meal of my entire life. So good that I bought the cookbook too! Shout out to our phenomenal waiter Coty who was knowledgeable, fun, and super personable! (Have a good Florida trip Coty!)
This night was one of the best. Magnolias is a true statement of a southern restaurant with the elegance to set it apart from the others. The dishes were all spectacular and full of flavor. There's a reason this restaurant is packed full from open to close. Lovely night with great food!
Beautiful venue inside out. All staff are well trained and professional. Our waiter, Chuck, was fantastic. Very confident in his recommendations which made us very comfortable with our choices. It 100% helped that the food was fantastic. We started with the fried tomatoes which for some odd reason was out of this world good. Then we got the recommended fried chicken which lived up to the hype. Juicy and not dry along with great flavored accompanied sides. Our fish dish was also very good. Lastly, that pecan pie was super yummy!
Enjoyed an incredible brunch on a rainy afternoon! Riley took great care of us, and everything was cooked and prepared just perfectly. The halibut fresh catch is a must try!
We were placed at a great quiet table with Alicia serving us. She was super attentive, offered insight into the menu choices and had an excellent meal. A dear lady seated near us had an allergy and we witnessed Alicia go above and beyond to make sure she had safe food and a good experience. Recommend highly.
We didn't get a chance to try this place the last time we were in town, but we made sure it was on our list this time. It did not disappoint! Leah, our server, was so knowledgeable about the menu and offered suggestions. She had such a charming personality! The food was absolutely delicious!! From the appetizers, the main courses and the deserts were out of this world! Magnolias will be added to our list to visit again! The pecan pie was a favorite! The fried mac and cheese was addictive! The chocolate mousse was my favorite - light and decadent! If you've never been here, try it out it! I promise you will want to return!
This restaurant was definitely very good, but I had higher expectations considering the reviews and the type of restaurant it’s portrayed to be. The best things were our appetizers. First, the bread was crispy and hot, and the butter was well seasoned and definitely tasted homemade. Our favorite was the fried macaroni and cheese! The bacon jam was delicious, the peppers gave it a nice spiciness, and the combination of ingredients worked so well. The fried green tomatoes were also a hit and were nice and crispy with good flavor. The other foods were just fine. The shrimp and sausage with grits was good, but SO heavy, and the sauce was oily. Probably one of my least favorite shrimp and grits dishes I’ve had. The flounder was perfectly cooked but it and and the vegetables were very unseasoned. Another reason for the 4 stars is the service, which was average at best. Our server was fine, but everything was very slow. We waited a while for even the appetizers to come out, had minimal check ins, and then had noticeable wait times when asking for the bill, paying, etc. It didn’t seem like they had low staff, so I’m not sure why this was. There were a couple of other extremely minor things we noticed (no pen or original receipt included when we received our card back, no one thanking us on our way out) that really don’t make or break an experience but considering the quality of restaurant, were a little off.
Our server is why not 5 stars. She talked fast with an accent and was in a hurry the Entire Time. I had told my husband that I wanted to try the grits on the app before making my decision on the entree. The server wanted our app and entree order together so I decided on the Lowcounty Bouilabaisse because it was a safe move for I wasn't sure I liked grits. Well the Fried Green Tomatoes were so delicious, creamy with a pop of cheddar cheese and the carmelized onions then paired with the chutney.... oh my!! Sad I didn't get to try an entree with grits. My husband had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Breast mashed potatoes, collard greens, creamed corn..... he loved every bite. I would return but request different server and NOT be seated right by the staff that just stood along a wall waiting for tables to empty. It was awkward for conversing when people standing near you and staring around the room. Put these people near hostess to take direction and not be near tables.
Classy restaurant for dine in with some Southern options. We enjoyed the food very much. The corn served on the side of fried chicken was the most delicious thing on the table for me. lol. It’s weird, but the side dish impressed me the most. Service was ok. We were seated without a reservation- thank you! We felt the waitress expected a smaller tip given we look South Asian, thus we felt treated a little differently compared to our neighboring tables! I hope I was wrong about how it felt though. (She still got a good tip from me. I have been in the service industry long enough- I know how it goes!) Interior is beautiful!! Classy, dim light, fairly nice and well decorated. Makes for a good date night spot or family get together restaurant. Good experience, overall. Thank you!
The food was good. The service was good. The drinks were good. The atmospherewasgood. I was hoping for great. The place is worth checking out, however, I would definitely consider other options in Charleston. Especially, if you are going to spend the kind of money that you will spend here. I would not return.
Fried green tomatoes appetizer is excellent as is the fried oyster po-boy. The server was awesome. We were able to get in without a reservation but by the time we left they weren’t taking walk ins. We sat in the back room which had a hotel banquet vibe.
While visiting this week we decided we needed a little southern cooking in our lives. We didn’t have a reservation when we popped in. While there were plenty of tables open (they could’ve been waiting on reservations) we were only offered seating at the bar. Many of the tables remained open while we were there. Reese, our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. Service was slow. The fried green tomatoes were amazing! So crispy and flavorful. My friend raved about the fried chicken sandwich. While leaving, the hostess offered someone walking in off the street (without a reservation) a table or the bar. I found that curious.
It's a very nice restaurant, fancy building and fancy furniture. The service is great, very kind, very alert. The food, don't miss understand me, is good, it tastes very good, but for me, too expensive for what is served.
Drinks & Bites – Dirty martini was a 10/10. Bread came out warm and fluffy with a spreadable chive butter that was heavenly. House-made potato chips weren’t my favorite but seemed to be a crowd pleaser. Deviled eggs were excellent. The down south egg roll was a bit dry and the jam dipping sauce overpowered it. Salmon Caesar salad was fresh and flavorful, while the fried mac and cheese was just okay—three small cubes that didn’t quite deliver. Vibe – Not a party spot, but a refined dining experience. We came dressed in theme for a bachelorette party and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming, making us feel right at home.
A lovely old restaurant, The Magnolias has a good reputation and with good reason. Staff were professional and knowledgeable and their food served. Quality was good and this establishment should be on your radar.
Went to Magnolias for lunch. We got the Traditional Deviled Eggs for appetizer. They were just that. If you like a deviled egg, you will like these. No notes. I had the Magnolias Classic Vegetarian plate. The presentation was beautiful and all of the veggies were very fresh. It wasn’t super flavorful, but still good and very filling. Definitely a solid choice for vegetarians. My sister got the Original Simmons chicken sandwich. Her feedback is “it was a good chicken sandwich.” My mom got the blackened salmon off of the specials menu. She loved the tomato sauce and the presentation of the plate. She wished that there were more of the sides, but felt the salmon itself was a nice portion. The service was fantastic. The waiters were really attentive. I accidentally spilled an entire glass of water in a main walkway. The servers were very nice and quick to help with the mess. They even placed another table cloth on our table, so we wouldn’t have to eat on a wet surface. All in all, the food was good, and the service was great.
We had the crab cake as a starter and it was delicious and the best we had ever eaten! Should have gotten it as our meal! The steak was underwhelming and I wish I would have tried something else, it really lacked flavor (no salt) and had no crust, from an establishment as nice as this you would expect prime beef seasoned to perfection but it was disappointing to say the least. The service and atmosphere was 10/10! I would recommend this place but to try something besides the NY strip.
The service was wonderful and I loved the parsley and cream cheese butter for the bread, but my Parmesan crusted flounder could have used more seasoning. The rice and veggies were very good - I love the lobster broth they cooked it in - very flavorful, but the actual Parmesan breading was a bit bland.
For our 1st dinner ever in Charleston we really enjoyed this highly recommended restaurant. A delicious pimiento cheese appetizer which was ever better the next day (breakfast!), a crisp & tasty salad. Fantastic fried Mac & cheese. Very nicely down Brussels sprouts and an excellent Wahoo. Doc’s been on me so I’m enjoying a lot more fish dishes these days and this one was excellent. It was a very unbusy evening and I think one server was handling everybody when we were there, but he did fine and was quite personable. The host staff was also good and very friendly. We try to keep five star reviews for the very best experiences we’ve ever had and this one was close to that. We’ll be back!
3 of us had our first meal at Magnolias. We started with fried chicken livers and brussel sprouts, both of which were good. The ceasar salad and house salad were fine. My husband had the catch of the day, Grouper, with sweet pea risotto and he said it was wonderful. I had heard good things about the fried chicken, so that is what I ordered. My collards and corn were good, the mashed potatoes and gravy tasted like instant and, although the chicken breading was good, the chicken itself was very dry. My son loves shrimp and grits, so that is what he ordered. He said the grits and sausage were good, but the shrimp tasted like popcorn size frozen. The gravy did not taste homemade and there was so much gravy over the grits the dish looked like soup. The ladies at the reception desk were all very friendly and accomodating with regard to seating preference. Our waiter, Gabe, was friendly and terrific as were the other wait staff who delivered and peppered our food.
