But hold on, porque aquí, we don’t do basic. Enter shugu: the rice ball that’s part nacho, part onigiri, and 100% puro Chihuahua swagger, served in a Chinese takeout box because why not? The spot itself is cozy—like, “grab a table if you’re quick, but don’t get too comfortable” cozy. With a couple of tables squeezed into the small space, it’s clear this place was made for the grab-and-go crowd. Every few minutes, the Uber Eats chime goes off, like a tiny dinner bell for the modern age, reminding you that this rice ball revolution is heading out the door as fast as it’s made. I saddled up with the Texas Shugu—because duh, when in doubt, go for chicken. And let me tell you, this bad boy hit harder than a West Texas windstorm. Juicy chicken? Check. Spicy sriracha-style sauce? Check. Pickled jalapeños? DOUBLE check. And guess what? You get two sauces free with every order, because Chihuahua’s got that generous abuela energy. The table looked like a shugu fiesta. There was a seafood one I didn’t get to wrestle down (but word was it tasted like a Gulf Coast summer), and the beefy Shugu Toreada (aka “The Bullfighter”), which came out swinging but got KO’d by the caramelized onions—too sweet for my Texas tastebuds.
