Opinions de Guglhupf Durham
This is one of my favorite places in Durham. I meet up with friends here monthly for breakfast. We always get fancy coffee drinks and sometimes oatmeal/chia or a croissant with scrambled eggs. The staff are lovely. The vibe is incredible whether you sit indoors our outside. If you’re outside in the cooler months, they have blankets and propane heat warmers. Parking can be a bit tricky. I recommend taking the street spots or those on the other side of the restaurant (near dumpsters). The bakery is also delicious to visit.
Guglhupf Restaurant & Bakery in Durham, NC is an absolute standout. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm, inviting, and thoughtfully designed—comfortable, stylish, and perfect for slowing down and enjoying the moment. The service is exceptional. The staff is friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being overbearing. You feel taken care of from start to finish, which makes the experience that much better. The food and drinks are outstanding. Their fresh matcha is top-tier—smooth, vibrant, and perfectly balanced. The pastries are incredible: baked fresh, beautifully crafted, and full of flavor. Every bite reflects real quality and attention to detail. Guglhupf nails it on every level—service, atmosphere, and execution. A true 10/10 overall experience and easily one of the best spots in Durham. Highly recommend.
Came here a bit before noon and beat the real Friday crowd. Staff was friendly, food was great and we sat inside and while being a little smoky it was nice. Delivery of our food to the table was pretty fast too.
Great place with great food. Very interesting how this restaurant is arranged. For me that is more like a cafe style. You can order food at the window with a cash register or from girls nearby with a device and pay for your order right there. Your order will be brought to you by a waiter and just like in a cafe, you choose the place where you want to sit. I like it very much! We didn't have to wait long for our food and coffee, even though the restaurant looked crowded. I really love croissants and I have to say that almond croissant was surprisingly exactly what a croissant should be - soft inside and crispy outside. The coffee was also very tasty. Kippered Salmon was amazing! I will definitely come back to this place for dinner.
This was a great brunch spot. We ordered the fall omelette and avocado smash Benedict for food and a pumpkin pie latte and iced matcha for drinks. All items were fresh and appetizing. Lines seemed long but they were moving and the servers were also quick with bringing the food. Id suggest securing a table while waiting in line.
Wow is an understatement, outstanding bakery, and food great menu. We enjoyed it so much. We are returning for breakfast before we fly out on Sunday morning. It was so good. I had to tell my cousin’s wife who is German about it so they can visit when they are up in this area. This is definitely on a go to list now every time we come up to visit our granddaughter at Duke.
Came here for the first time on a date. The decor, food, and staff were wonderful. The bakery attached was an amazing experience as well. We purchased a fruit tart and some cookies from the bakery afterwards.
The location was beautiful, the staff was nice, and the food was great. My wife’s food took a long time to come out, the ticket got lost or something. But the manager came out and apologized and took her food off the bill. We didn’t even complain, so that was a big show of integrity on his part. Really impressed and would love to come back sometime.
What a beautiful spot! Delicious food, very cool vibe overall, friendly staff. We had sandwiches, baked goods, and coffee. Highly recommend all around!
Every dish was generous in portion, high quality, and also, rather fairly priced for what I would call a pretty bougie setting. Lots of parking and service is quick. Outdoor seating is very nice and scenic, but there’s limited indoor options. The hot chocolate is very good and doesn’t just taste like Swiss miss!
Had an amazing date night at Guglhuph!! My wife and I throughly enjoyed it, and the atmosphere was incredible. The German food is great. Everything here is top notch, I can’t wait to come back!
I absolutely loved this place! It definitely gives that German/European vibe with the way you order cafeteria style! The food was amazing and I got their Turmeric Latte which didn’t disappoint! This is the top of my brunch places to go now!
Guglhupf is a gem! Even on a busy Friday morning, we found parking and got a table without a wait. The bakery selection is incredible — so many tempting options. I especially loved the peach blueberry scone — absolutely delicious. The main menu has something for everyone, and the outdoor seating was perfect on a hot day. Great food, great atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Sunday morning breakfast. Counter service. This restaurant does it well. What appeared to be a long wait really wasn't long at all! My son and i both had the pancakes. Delicious!
Me and my partner went over the weekend! It’s a beautiful place with a book shop in front. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was fantastic! I can’t wait to go back in warmer weather to sit outside, but if you don’t mind the cold they have heaters and complimentary blankets if you like sitting outside.
Really cool spot. Food is great, and they have a good drink menu, too. Service is so-so (they took a half hour to bring the special, and the way to order is a little clunky). The restaurant itself is amazing, and very cool. The food is the most important thing, and it delivered. Mostly German fare, but also some fusion options and things that are adjacent, like doner. The bakery items are excellent, and there's lots of variety. Will definitely be back if I'm in the area.
Excellent food and the atmosphere was perfect! New Years Day special and Sparkler beverage were both festively delicious! Husband said best coffee he's ever had!
I've been here once before, but didn't review because I was in crutches. This time around, I was able to enjoy it more. I got the bratwurst, which came on a very tasty pretzel bun with fries. I also had an Americano. My wife had the smoked salmon plate with a machta tea. We enjoyed our meal. Service was quick and the guy taking orders was friendly and helpful. Arrived about 11:30 am, so the line was not too long. This place gets really busy, so arrive early. We sat outside, which is also dog friendly. They have heaters out there, but the weather was excellent today. Parking is kind of a nightmare here, not from lack of spaces, but because some people don't know how to traverse a parking lot. We also bought from the bakery. The cream puff was better than most I've had. The cream is a little thicker, so it doesn't smooth and melt too fast.
A family of 4. Two adults and two 6 year olds. Food was amazing! Environment even on the inside was busy but nice. Very family friendly staff consistently checks in.
The food is wonderful and has never disappointed. We have eaten there many times since January 2025. The atmosphere is amazing as well. Service is good but food and atmosphere are the best!
I actually really enjoyed my time here! Although you have to line up to order your food, the line does move relatively quickly and the staff is super nice. You would hope for a really good day so that you can sit outside. I think that's better than sitting inside, but there is inside seating as well. Also, if there are multiple people in your party, you can take turns and go get snacks from the bakery to eat while you're waiting in line to order your food. I would definitely recommend brunch. * parking was surprisingly not a total nightmare. It's almost like as you're coming someone is leaving so they're legit was always a spot and they have a parking lot in the back. I couldn't tell you how to get there, but there is one.
Food looks delicious and Instagram-able. We ate outside as it was shaded and had outdoor heating. Everything we ordered tasted good. I would have I liked if my pork schnitzel mushroom gravy better seasoned. Bakery next door is a plus.
The food was so delicious!! The portion size was large, so I had to take half of it home. I don't drink dark beer, but I did try some and loved it. Really cool place. Everyone was so friendly! I'm definitely going back!!
There’s something charming about Guglhupf. It pulls you in with the scent of sugar and warmth, like a childhood memory you can’t quite place. The bakery is where the magic lives. The danishes? Absolute chef’s kiss, flaky, rich, just the right amount of sweet. If you go for nothing else, go for those. The restaurant side, though, feels like it’s always in a bit of a hurry. The food is good, don’t get me wrong, but it lands on the table with the energy of a rushed conversation. You eat it, you like it, but part of you wonders what it could’ve been if someone had taken a breath before plating it. The line does move fast, though, credit where credit’s due. Now, the London Fog. I’ve ordered it more than once, because I want it to be perfect. But every time, the vanilla’s missing. It’s like a ghost ingredient, on the menu, promised, but never showing up. After the second time, I stopped expecting it and started treating it like a recurring glitch in the system. And let’s talk about the air inside. Cozy, yes. But sit too long and you leave with the smell of burnt air in your clothes and hair. Like something’s always over-roasting behind the scenes. Still, there’s a quiet rhythm here. A good place to sit and chat, sip something warm, and watch the day shuffle by. Just… keep your expectations where they belong, in the bakery case.
Great place Delicious food. Weird ordering/serving system but it works. Had fantastic German beers.
Highly recommend Guglhupf for your special events! Chris will ensure every detail is taken care of and will make it stress free and beautiful for your guests. He communicates very well through the preparations and makes suggestions to finalize the plans. Our rehearsal dinner was amazing! Special thanks to our two wonderful servers who handled our large group seamlessly. Also thank you to Chef Dave and the kitchen staff for the absolutely delicious food, which came out quickly for each course, and for handling the allergies/dietary restrictions so smoothly. Everyone loved the food! We look forward to returning again.
I am visiting from Texas, and I stopped by to get some bread. There was a fundraiser event for the recent floods, so the ambience was really nice lots of music and people outside. I only went to the bakery and bought a couple of pieces of bread. Everything looked amazing and the bread I bought was really good.
Really nice brunch spot with a great atmosphere and vibe. Tons of outdoor seating for large groups and smaller tables inside. An amazing bakery attached with great coffee as well. Loved the pork schnitzel! Breakfast items also looked delicious. This is a perfect place for an informal get together or hangout with family members or friends. Ordering is done at a counter and food is brought to you, but there is not table service. Dog friendly. It’s the type of place you want to go have a beer and some schnitzel at after mowing the grass.
This place is a hidden gem. It’s so hidden you can’t even see it, it’s like an oasis. I have become addicted to coming here every Sunday. I have tried just about everything on their menu. My favorites are definitely the fried buttermilk chicken sandwich, and the smashed avocado eggs Benedict. My #1 favorite dish is their triple stack pancakes. It is the BEST pancakes I’ve ever had in my entire life. And trust me - I have tried many many pancakes , even in other states. The coffee is amazing , and so are the pastries. The only downside is that you can’t make reservations on the weekends which kind of sucks. Other than that TRY IT you will not be dissapointed.
After fasting for a PET scan at UNC..and an appt that took longer than expected, this was the perfect atmosphere and delishiousness😁😋 I needed! Quick, delightful staff served a Summer salad with Mahi that was perfection! Thank you for always feeding my soul! 💙🩷💚just B
Really good schnitzel and pasta. The best beer selection if you're like me and favorite style beer is a German lager. Chris has gone above and beyond to ensure the food and drink is perfect. I highly recommend their nice bakery, restaurant, or cold beer.
Great place to enjoy a good meal with family or friends. It can be quite crowded during lunch time. Need to order your food at the counter and they will bring it over to your table. Service is friendly. The food is delicious. The bakery has an amazing selection of bread, cakes and pastries. There is outdoor and indoor seating.
I thought it's worth the hype. Food did take a long time to come, so don't come hangry 🫣😅 I got the kippered salmon which was delicious. Interested in trying the arugula salad next time. Friend got lamb doner which was good too. We got some macarons from inside the bakery which were great too. Skip the coffee, I didn't really enjoy it.
This restaurant has absolutely amazing atmosphere. A perfect place to come study or do work on a weekday. We did go on a weekday and the greenery was beautiful and the restaurant was nice and quiet. The line gets really long on the weekends. They have the a inside bakery as well which you can grab things to go quickly. Their pastries are delicious. I can't wait to go back and try all their different vegetarian options
Unique atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. Place order at window and find a seat to be served. Excellent food and German beer. Will be back with friends. We live in Charlotte, but nice for a day trip
Amazing customer service and response from the Bakery team! I emailed about a last minute custom cake order for my dad’s birthday and they were prompt and extremely accommodating ensuring I could get the cake that I wanted. Also, very kind on the phone and through email, saved his birthday weekend for sure!
This entire restaurant is literally perfection. From their coffees, pastries and food, anything you order at ANY TIME is chefs kiss. The staff works the hardest and did I mention that anything you order is delectable. Will say their egg Benedict and cafe au last is 20/10 stars.. but you can't go wrong with anything you order. Dont take it from me and this amazing review but go see for yourself and visit this place.. because it is a gem and as much as I want to gatekeep it, it deserves to be shared with the world. We love Guglhupf ! 🧡 already dreaming of coming back, SOON!
Great options for vegans! Look for the "vg" next to the menu options. This is one of my go-to spots for a relaxing outdoor brunch, even when it's a little chilly, or takeout dinner. Their spicy fried tofu sandwich is my favorite! They even offer vegan cupcakes (and sometimes cookies) in the bakery. It's the perfect place if you're looking to eat outdoors in a relaxing, European-style setting. The staff are friendly and helpful. Heads up, the wait can be long during peak hours so get there early if you can.
Very popular breakfast choice we got there before they’re opened and I was already a line. There is no table service for ordering food. You must stand in a line and order your food and it’s hard to get a refill of coffee. I found the food to be quite tasty and yummy with a slight German influence at least on the breakfast menu many of the seats are outside. There’s a small inside area. The outside has a lovely garden with cool weird statues. There’s a separate line for the bakery so you might wanna get in that line 1st get a snack while you wait over a half hour to put in your order.
Such a fun brunch spot! The atmosphere is amazing. It is very crowded, but there’s lots of heaters so even sitting outside we were warm.
We came here for breakfast — just like the hundreds of other people standing in line that morning. Right away, I’ll say this: you’ve got to come early. Expect to wait at least 30 minutes, sometimes more. We waited about 40 minutes before getting in. Honestly, they could make the line process a bit smoother. While we were waiting, I noticed a bunch of empty tables, but the line was still barely moving. It also wasn’t super clear at the end where exactly you’re supposed to go — like whether to walk up to the counter or wait to be seated. It would really help if they had more printed menus outside, so people could decide what they want ahead of time instead of taking forever at the counter. Best move? Check out the menu online before you go. Now, about the food. We ordered a strawberry cheese danish, which was really good. For our daughter, we got pancakes. My wife had the lamb gyro (or something similar), and I ordered a tuna sandwich on sourdough. Though technically, it was more like a tuna spread than a sandwich — but it was delicious. Not super filling, but really tasty. My wife liked her gyro too, though she said it was a bit awkward to eat — maybe they could plate it differently. Our daughter loved her pancakes and the cherry cheese danish — both were excellent. So for food, we’d give it 5/5. Atmosphere-wise, it’s a fun spot — lively and busy, especially in the morning. I’d love to come back during Oktoberfest to really feel the vibe. Definitely another 5/5 for atmosphere. Now for service — that part I wasn’t thrilled about. You have to get your own water, utensils, and napkins, though they do bring the coffee to your table. I just don’t really get why they ask for 18–25% tips at the counter when you’re basically doing half the work yourself. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it did feel a bit off. Still, it didn’t ruin the experience — just something they could improve on.
I came here for brunch and lunch on 2 separate occasions. The food was great but 4 stars for the drinks. The first Bloody Mary was great! But the second time I had, it was just on the average side- weak. Also, parking can be challenging during the weekends.
I recently visited "Guglhupf restaurant" located at durham, and I was very pleased with my experience. The cafe has a warm and inviting atmosphere, and they serve delicious coffee and pastries. I ordered the omelet with shakshuka sauce, latte and a croissant, which were excellent. The friendly service was great, and the prices were reasonable. Overall, I would highly recommend this cafe because of its quality food, excellent service, and comfortable atmosphere
From regensburg and the pretzel was a bit weird and tasted frozen. They put pickles in the potato salad and should have been cucumbers. The schnitzel was good. Mushroom gravy was ok. Will definitely go again. Oh and they didnt know what spezi was lol
Great lively and vibrant atmosphere. Food was great. Coffee I got was like warm and it was almost at room temperature pretty soon. They could do a better job at seating as well. I like their idea of choose where you sit but I still prefer a traditional setting. Other than that it’s a great place. Would visit again.
I had a lovely brunch the other day with my friends from my internship. This place is both a bakery and a restaurant, both of which are simultaneously exclusive and not. a paradox of sorts. let me set the layout for you. once you get past the gantlet that is parking, you, your party, what have you, will either quickly find somewhere to sit or immediately join the line to order at their window. After deciding on the latter or not, you’ll eventually sit and wait on your requested items. however, there is no need to simply stay seated as now you explore the aforementioned bakery. it’s quaint and smells lovely. they really have some amazing stuff here. I ultimately decided on a buttermilk chicken sandwich with fries and a vietnamese iced coffee. I saw the sandwich plated and immediately settled on it. i’ve also been hooked on the flavors of vietnamese iced coffee. it’s like chai’s nonchalant older cousin who sneaks you your first cigarette. anyways. the actual servers do not come around much as they just come to drop off stuff and promptly pick up after you are gone. in fact you pay at the window before it even arrives. a bold model indeed. here’s why it’s four starts: i can’t leave four and half due to googles limited algorithm. this place is truly a 4.5 star experience! it’s near perfect. an expansive menu that rotates depending on the time. it is hands down one of the best spots for brunch in all of the triangle. here’s the catch though. they only do ketchup. that’s right, just mayo, mustard, and ketchup. maybe hot sauce. i didn’t ask. i only hope they do. hugely disappointed with this lack of dipping sauce. no ranch, no bbq, no honey mustard or anything in house. i believe i heard something about an aioli; so, fancy mayo is your other option. also parking is miserable. idk who to blame here so i’ll yell my grievances into my pillow. BIG SHOUTOUT though to the staff who gave us a free cookie (we had seemingly ordered one but possibly was misplaced/not on our ticket due to the large size of our party’s numerous order) so they told us to not worry about it. wish i caught their name but thank you nonetheless. they have lots of great things going on here. indoor outdoor seating good wifi a great menu and a freaking bakery. tough to find the same experience at any brunch place, as much as i despised getting here, i loved every second i stayed. prost!
Food was hot and well seasoned. Schnitzel and steak frite. Both were worthy or repeat orders. Fries were just fries, I expected better fries but they weren't bad at all. Recommendations were excellent when questioning staff on items and drinks. Hot chocolate was crazy good, dark chocolate heavy but sweet and creamy. Deserts were also great, lemon tart and almond cookie were torch! It was a windy off and on rain day and at least a large portion of the outdoor seating is roofless FYI. The decor is that of a what I imagine a Hansel and Gretel world would look like. The upstairs can get smokey from the open kitchen but it's a beautiful place with good food.
I ordered the bratwurst dinner from thier daily special, what i got was like a johnsonville sausage from the grocery store. Everything else was great, service was friendly. It looks like a good place to take a date. Just moved here from Milwaukee & the brats up there are way better
Just average. You need to stand in line to order food then find your own seat, hoping something is open. Fortunately, we went on a Wednesday morning so not busy. Coffee good. Chocolate croissant laughable. It had the tiniest bit of chocolate and croissant, while light and fluffy was quite bland which set the stage for the croissant egg sandwiches we had coming yet and were also bland. The fresh pineapple that came with it was turning brown so beyond fresh. My wife’s pork belly sandwich was actually pretty decent. Still holding out hope, we got a few things from bakery on way out. Cream puffs, peppermint brownie were good. Chocolate chip cookie ok. Double chocolate raspberry cookie dry and tasted off. Atmosphere kind of cool with the old wood construction and outdoor seating. I was just in town for Duke game and this was one of the better rated breakfast joints. If ever back in town, will try Elmo’s which was similarly rated.
I ordered brunch, an omelette with fruit and bread. I’m really disappointed in the food. My omelette had a massive shell in it, my fruit was very low quality and over half inedible rind despite being pre-cut, and the bread was stale and bland. I really don’t get how this food was delivered so poorly. Not sure the appeal of this restaurant if they can’t even serve fresh bread… I will be avoiding going forward.
