The food was good. The menu is not the longest, and if you're picky, there may not be many items to choose from. Otherwise I enjoyed the place very much. It was by reservation only on Valentines Day.
We had a delightful girls' night out at Hawthorne and Wood. Service was great, and our server made wonderful recommendations. Drinks and food were yummy. I definitely recommend the cinnamon cocktail. We ordered the gnocchi, scallops, and flounder as main dishes. All were delicious. Scallops were perfectly cooked. The gnocchi dish was a highlight. Gnocchi was also cooked perfectly, and the vegetables brought the gnocchi and sauce together so well. For dessert, we had bread pudding and quince and a chocolate semifreddo. Both desserts were not too sweet and a good finish to the meal.
Everytime I come to Hawthorne & Wood the experience is great. Cozy ambiance. The food 10/10, well seasoned and cooked. I've sat at the bar multiple times, at a table and been served in the private room with a group. Great service everytime! This time I sat at the bar and ordered from the winter tasting menu with the wine paring. I highly recommend. Each dish was served as described and tasted great. Nice parings too! My only issue was the steak been served a bit too rare for my liking. But I told my server and the cooked it a bit more and it was perfect.
My son brought me to Hawthorne & Wood for dinner, and it definitely lived up to everything I’ve heard. I’ve been wanting to try this spot for a long time, and I finally had my chance this week. I ordered the seared New Bedford scallops and my son had the sautéed flounder. We shared the gem salad and the roasted honeynut squash—every dish was outstanding. The ambience is warm and inviting, the service was attentive, and the wine selection was excellent. A beautiful dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommend.
Well, back to my original 5 star review for this place. I was originally perturbed by the a cancellation fee issue I had, but decided to return anyway after nearly 2 years of skipping the chef's primary location, and I'm glad we returned. I can honestly say I've never had a lamb loin as juicy and flavorful than as H&W prepared for this evening, as was their tenderloin. Having rabbit as a unique dish is also a lost art. Service was on point and I'm happy to say we're back to being regulars again.
Had the best time at Hawthorne and Wood on NYE!! TLDR: We feel like we discovered our new favorite restaurant on Wednesday. To start off, our server (I cannot remember his name for the life of me but he had cool tattoos on his arms) was friendly, knowledgeable and just made sure drinks were always full and that the food was great. Never once felt forgotten about and he was great with recommendations/suggestions. For our first courses we ordered the Caviar which was one of the stars of the whole meal, it came with these seasoned crumpets and a hollandaise that meshed so well together we would’ve licked the bowl if we could’ve. We also got the focaccia bread which was PERFECT my only complaint for the full meal was that I didn’t love the orange in the orange rosemary butter but we opted out of adding butter to the bread and instead dipping it in the preserved lemon sauce from the New Orleans Barbecue Shrimp and let me tell you that was something from another world-addicting and delicious. Per the website, the chef has experience cooking in New Orleans and you can really tell with the insane flavors coming through in each bite. We followed this with the hamachi tiradito that was spectacular (almost like a ceviche, but the fish cooks in the aguachile) you have to make sure you get a bite of everything to see how those flavors come together. But one of the best parts of the meal was the pork shoulder appetizer that came with the polenta- this truly was to die for, we spoke about it so much the people next to us ordered the same and loved it. For the entree we chose to split the scallops and we almost wished we had ordered a full entree of it for ourselves instead because of how perfect the bacon jam and collards worked with the yam puree and allowed the scallops to shine (plus they were perfectly cooked). At this point of the meal we were stuffed and amazed but we knew we had to finish with a dessert and the sticky toffee pudding did not let us down one bit. One of the best desserts I have had in around here. It’s rare to have a restaurant blow your mind with every aspect of a meal and they really hit it out of the ballpark. This was a better meal than we have had at BIN54, ACME, Crawford Brothers, etc.. Just incredible food and we will definitely be back. 11/10. Serious compliments to the chef for the food and to all of the wait staff and front of house who made sure the holiday and quick pace of NYE didn’t affect their hospitality and kindness.
Hawthorne & wood was such a fun and fascinating experience. I hope to experience the quality and service here that I do at all the restaurants I visit. Truly an unforgettable experience. My boyfriend and I made the trip for my Mom’s 55th birthday and were delighted with the atmosphere. While we had no reservations and they were a little bit too busy for a table, we were invited to sit at the bar (which was quite a treat for us chatty folk!). My boyfriend and mom had the burger, which from their words was incredible. I, however, was curious about their tasting menu. For $70, I received a five course meal consisting of numerous seasonal and fascinating dishes. I would like to add that the lamb tartare blew me away! I was so fascinated with the spices and combinations of the ingredients that I would have never expected to work so excellently together! I have never had a restaurant nor a dish pick my brain in such a manner. The bartender who mainly worked in front of where we sat provided interesting input and answered all of our questions. We were also provided with a fascinating explanation on their cereal for dinner cocktail and how it is made! (High recommend asking, so interesting!) I had additionally mentioned to the bartender that it was my mom’s birthday, and we were so graciously gifted an additional chocolate truffle dessert, which, while small, was incredibly rich and delicious. Such a beautiful visit with incredible food, new flavors, and kind staff! Thank you Hawthorne & wood!
We had a wonderful dining experience here for our anniversary. The atmosphere was cozy and upscale, with a nice bar and comfortable booth and table seating areas. Food and drinks were delicious. No Surprises was a refreshing cocktail. We ordered the scallops and zucchini sticky cakes which were flavorful and cooked perfectly. We had a complimentary dessert for our anniversary which was a sweet touch. Can’t wait to come back!
I came here for my birthday yesterday. Note: I don't think they do anything for birthdays because it was not acknowledged from our reservation lol. Otherwise... Food was so delicious. The scallops were soooo good, the best scallops my girlfriend and I have ever had. We both also really enjoyed the chilled corn soup. I recommend the focaccia with smoked trout and little pickles too, that was great. The steak was also very delicious and perfectly cooked, wall-to-wall medium rare to rare. With the tasting menu we basically got to try a lot of different things. Service was excellent. Eric's [our server] excitement about Hawthorne got us even more excited about the dinner. He made some really awesome recommendations with cocktails (La Vida Loca? was our favorite). We also tried Airport Rules and Laotian luchador? Those were pretty fun to drink too and yummy. We will definitely come back in the future. yum yum.

This was our first time coming here and everything was impeccable. The food was absolutely amazing, and so was our server. She did an amazing job, i can’t recall her name, but she’s a kind red-headed lady. She went above and beyond for us last night, and even made our anniversary a little more special. 10/10 will be returning
Food and service are both five out of five, but the atmosphere could use a little work, though perhaps that’s just because we were there on the early end. Our server was great and had strong recommendations, and the food was delicious. We had been before, but had to leave due to an emergency, which we did put in the comments and I would have expected them to address it, but they did not. Either way, the food was great and you’re probably over ordered as portions are solid.
Not from the area but here about 1x a month and seek this place out every time I’m in town, sometimes twice in a week. Now let’s get to the food — I don’t think this place misses, but I do have some favorites. The little gem salad is a staple. The soup - changes but is always fire. As well as the white fish with coconut curry sauce. If you aren’t sure what to get, ask for recommendations from the staff. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks guys!
My sister and I had a fabulous dinner with exceptional food and service. Our server, Heather was a joy and made our tasting experience even better. I would highly recommend the ambiance, service and most importantly the food, which was beautifully presented with exquisite flavors. Highly recommend this place.
Super delicious dinner with wine pairing. Truffle Aranchini, Poached Shrimp, lettuce and Treviso salad and the chocolate & pistachio dessert were my highlights. I really liked the vermouth they paired with the dessert at the end. The restaurant itself is lowlight and ambient. No loud music in the back. It was great for conversation. The servers were super nice and knowledgeable. Like very friendly! That said, we were in a private room and it was a bit rushed on the clearing of the plates, etc. I am not picky, but I know some people are. Or another small thing, water replenishment could have been more frequent. Menu is great. I was really happy with the food. Especially the things they do to the vegetables, woohoo!! The broccoli and mushrooms were a huge hit for me. I thought the pork was too fatty for my liking, but it was tasty and it was nice with the Pinot noir. Halibut was really good and apparently it’s a long time menu item. God I was IMPRESSED with the salad. It had so much depth and dimension. A vegetarian could eat happily here. They switch up the menus and items often. Something to look forward to!
I just love Hawthorne & Wood. We've been here about 4 times now and every time we are just so satisfied. The environment is wonderful and the food is just beyond our expectations every time. Their cocktails are fantastic. And if you don't know what to order the staff is incredibly knowledgeable on what spirits they have behind the bar and what goes into their cocktails. I just don't have a single negative critique, they are just doing everything above standard. They should be proud of how great they are!
Went to Hawthorne & Wood for my anniversary. The restaurant itself is very clean and beautiful. It definitely fits the casual fine dining vibe. Our server was very enthusiastic and provided good service. The food was slightly disappointing for the price that we paid. Although it was good, the portions were very small and it's not like I was blown away by the taste. We got the Lamb Belly, Scallops, and Foie Gras.
My daughter and her husband had been here and were not impressed but I wanted to give it a shot because of the positive reviews. I was similarly disappointed. The service was outstanding and the presentation was great but the flavors just didn't impress me. Had the porkchop with Brussel sprouts. First, it was really hard to trim the fat off the porkchop because it was just too dark in there. Had to keep turning my phone on to see what I was cutting at. And the sauce was kind of a disappointing barbecue sauce - too sweet and not enough kick. Maybe it wasn't trying to be a barbecue sauce but then what was it supposed to be? Although I'm not a brussel sprouts fan I figured maybe they would have a creative way of preparing them. Not really. They were basically just grilled with no detectable flavor I could come up with other than bitter. Bottom line is that I've had more creative takes on these dishes elsewhere.
Nice place. First visit and we had a large group of 10. Service was first rate despite the large group. We sat inside and atmosphere was about what you would expect from a finer restaurant. Noise level was low enough to handle multiple conversations without shouting. Appetizers were very good and the specialty salad was exceptional. My main course of the halibut was average as the fish was over cooked and dry but the accompaniments moderated that disappointment. Multiple desserts circulated the group and they were all very good
30 minute wait for our reserved table wasn’t met with the level of care you’d expect from a $100+ per head dining experience in Chapel Hill on a Thursday. But maybe that’s just what run of the mill service costs these days. Staff seemed very rushed and overall on the back foot about communication and creating an ambience worthy of the food they were trying to put out. A few complimentary bar snacks were appreciated once we finally got to our table (but please don’t call the bread you’re making focaccia), however the vibe remained off. I guess to make up for their botched turn time, we were now the ones pushed to rush. As an example generally about how our time felt, I had a large last drink of my cocktail swiftly taken off the table unprompted. I wasn’t really in the mood or ever expecting myself to call the waiter out to hand it back. The dishes were hit or miss. The beets were placed on a bed of an aioli akin to coleslaw dressing, the flounder dry instead of delicate, atop a “jasmine” rice (no fragrance or taste whatsoever) in a coconut milk base that lacked depth. It was really a dish held together by green onions and some decent quality garnishes. The strip was very well prepared and plated, and I will give them that the quality of ingredients is a notch higher than other new American spots in the area, even in the dishes that just didn’t hit home. It just wasn’t particularly inspired and did not make up for the overall experience.
We loved the atmosphere The Bartender super friendly and made us a yummy cocktail. At dinner we had an awesome Waiter. Unfortunately the pork chop was dry and way over smoked. The Scallop dish was over salted. Our salad was absolutely delish! We appreciated the waiter splitting our salads on individual plates. We will try again, just felt like they were having an “Off” day.
From hostess attention to service, drinks and meal, Hawthorn and Wood excelled! Chaira, our server, was exceptional and knew every detail of the drinks and menu. Had the No Surprise cocktail and loved it. The Flounder entree was delicious and our dessert was so darn good. I wish we were in town another night to do it all over again.
