Phenomenal food, great service. Plan to spend 3 hours on the 7 course meal.
Thank you for that great night. it was very special and we felt more than very welcome. the service was excellent, of course the food as well! thanks from your German guests!! The fotos are only some impressions.
There is no doubt about it,if you are looking for somewhere extra special to celebrate, with over 25 years holding his Michelin Star, then,Restaurant Martin Wishart down at the shore in Leith should be at the top of your list. Classical French Cuisine ,our lunch today was nothing short of outstanding. Featuring delicious seasonal produce with matching wines we could not have asked for more. The staff were so knowledgeable and its always a pleasure listening to the sommelier describing the wine you are about to have,I can highly recommend that you treat yourself to a visit in the very near future.
One of the best Michelin-star restaurants we’ve tried — and easily the top one out of the three we visited during our 4-night stay in Edinburgh. The food was thoughtfully “crafted” and absolutely delicious. The portions were some of the most generous we’ve ever encountered, leaving us genuinely satisfied by the end of the meal. It’s a rare moment these days when you realise your main course is more than just three bites. The service was impeccable. Interacting with the international staff was a pleasure, to say the least. The time they took to showcase and explain each ingredient was exactly right — never rushed, always engaging. Overall, one of our best culinary experiences, and definitely the number-one spot in Edinburgh for us.
Top notch service! We got their 25th anniversary menu. The first few courses (tartare, ceviche, scallops, foie gras) were simply incredible, no notes. The flavors of the next few dishes, the grouse and monkfish (admittedly not my favorite type of fish), seemed muddled. The desserts were satisfactory but nothing that blew us out of the water.
A gorgeous meal at Martin Wishart. Every dish felt thoughtful, the pacing perfect, and the service quietly attentive. Elegant, intimate, and absolutely worth it.
This has to be one of the best fine dining, tasting experiences we have had, and we are seasoned fine diners. From start to finish, everything was perfect. The head waiter and staff were amazing, they couldn't do enough for you. We had the anniversary tasting menu, and it was superb, not one dish could we find fault with. My daughter even said it was the best meal she ever had. Highly recommend to anyone.
totally stunning, IMO above 1* and certainly some of the dishes were 2* to be honest, superb meal, faultless service a complete joy
Had a table of 8 for lunch on a Friday. Absolutely excellent 3 course lunch menu. Firstly the amouse bouch came as 5bite size portions followed by bread. The scallops was excellent starter dish. The mains of monkish again excellent . The passionfruit creme brulle and the blackberries sorbet with white creme was Also Excellent. Service was excellent. We had a bottle of the Gosset champagne and Sancerre which was a mark up of x3.
I had the 3-course lunch menu. Taste was phenomenal. The dishes were designed in a choreographed way, whichever starter or main you have chosen. Portion was just right for lunch, although I would love to have one more bite (when it was this good). Cocktail selection was wonderful, too. This is the sort of restaurant to come across my mind every time I want to eat out in Edinburgh.
This was my wife and I’s first experience of fine dining at a Michelin restaurant. It was certainly better than “fine”, in fact it was excellent. We were kindly greeted and taken to our seats. All staff were exceptionally professional and attentive. We had the lunch menu and we had many dishes that we hadn’t tasted before. All of which were amazingly presented and had unique flavours. There was only one dish my wife didn’t like but only because it was a bit ‘cheesy’. Thankfully I was there to gobble it up. Overall a great experience and it makes you appreciate the flavours of food, instead of munching meals without even thinking.
WOW WOW WOW It was our 10th Wedding Anniversary so having heard fantastic reviews about this restaurant we decided to book a table and go for the 4 course lunch menu. We were greeted upon arrival and shown to our table and immediately felt at home. The dining room is not pretentious but classical and bright, the service is natural and heartfelt not false like actors acting a pre rehearsed ritual. The food was exceptional cooked to perfection concentrating on the best ingredients cooked classically with fantastic techniques. This restaurant concentrates on simplicity and flavours not overloading dishes with elements that are not required. We had Cheese Soufflé, Pumpkin Risotto, Sea-bass glazed with champagne butter and Confit Duck cleverly paired with Pasta glazed in stock and each bite gave different flavour hits. We ended with classic Apple Tartan again melt in your mouth. Not to mention the free pre starters the bread with a selection of accompaniments and the chocolates at the end this was 8 courses each with 4 soft drinks and we got change out of £200. If you are a foodie and want the real deal then Martin Wishart is the place to go. Its concept is fantastic and it’s accessible to all budgets wanting to try a Michelin Star experience. I have had the pleasure of eating the 9 course tasting menu at Raymond Blancs hotel and the biggest compliment I can give Restaurant Martin Wishart is that it was a different level to that. The best dining experience both myself and my wife have ever had by a country mile so thanks to all the staff for making our wedding anniversary so special. Can’t wait to return ASAP to once again make our pallets dance. David and Victoria Carroll
We went to celebrate an anniversary. We enjoyed the tasting menu for dinner and it was excellent! Stand out aspects were the beetroot horseradish macaron, halibut ceviche, Orkney scallop with caviar. The staff are knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. The decor is elegant and understated. It was a wonderful experience and we will be back. Highly recommended!!!!
Fantastic guest service and appropriate meal portions. I highly recommend the Tasting Menu with matching wines. It was the perfect experience from start to finish! Will be back soon.
Slightly odd dining room layout but liked the small number of covers. Service excellent and very attentive. I've come to the conclusion that any high end dining experience doesn't just live or die on the food it's the combination of the tasting menu and the sommelier. Both were very good here with the highlight (sorry martin) being the impeccable sommelier. Knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to walk us through every conceivable option when the pairing wasn't considered. Overall a great experience and would definitely return. Only thing missing was the soufflé!
What an absolute excellent experience. This was my first Michelin star restaurant & it was even better than I imagined. Paul & his staff were right on point. My favorites were the seaweed butter, Orkney scallop, passion fruit dessert & coffee with petit fours.
Always a wonderful experience here in Leith. Truly outstanding and consistently brilliant cooking shown on wonderful, whimsical plates that taste better than they look... An exceptional team back of house which are professional, personal yet unobtrusive. Some absolutely delicious wines today, possibly next level stuff but at a more than reasonable price point. Good wine like this is often fraught with danger to order when you're not in the know. Struggle to find fault here after being a sporadic regular for almost a decade. If you haven't been you're missing out. If you have, then you already agree with me and have no need for this review. Get along as the new menu starts tonight! A perfect reason to return for lunch tomorrow.
Very enjoyable tasting menu experience. Wonderful service with great staff, friendly and attentive. Food was exquisite, excellent starters, thought the scallop dish was fabulous but deserving of a whole scallop! Overall great variety and interesting flavours, textures and ideas
Amazing artwork—the team here are wizards. Everyone and everything are top notch professionally provided, from the welcome at the door, throughout the meal, and during our farewells. We ordered the lunch menu, and ordered a couple extra dishes from the tasting menu. For me, the highlight was the sea bream ceviche, which was delicately and delightfully prepared. We’ll definitely go back next time we’re in Edinburgh.
It was amazing experience! The food is absolutely delicious and presented in a unique way. Service is beyond excellent. Enturage is very elegant.Highly recommend this restaurant.
Writing this review after dining at Martin Wishart ten months ago. Absolutely amazing food and service. My friend and I discovered this gem a day before and we both enjoyed every course. Definitely recommend it!
A gorgeous menu with tasting option and market option. We had the market option which was delicious. We accompanied the meal with a glass of red and the cheese course with a glass of tawney port. The only thing to bring down the total scores was the plastic table decorations, they may last longer than real plants but they just don't cut the mustard in today's environmental conditions.
We had the set lunch menu which is limited to 2 choices per course with cheese as an add on, bread is served, an amuse bouchée and sweets to finish. We had all the menu, so that we could try everything and is was excellent and served as well as you would expect in such a place. It has 16 tables and only 3 were empty when we went on a summer Thursday so book. Edinburgh beer company beers if you ask.
Very fine restaurant in Leith with superfriendly staff, elegant setting and most importantly, amazing food! You can choose between a set 6-course or 8-course tasting menu or a 4-course a la carte menu. A vegeterian 6-course set menu is also available. Don’t worry is there are dishes on the set menu which is not your favorite, you can swap these with choices from the other menu or a la carte. I do like this kind of flexibility. The portions are not that big, but you will feel full after all the courses. And there are little canapes before starting the menu and little sweet bits after you finished the courses. This all comes with matching wine selection and recommendations. Highly recommended, perfect for special occassions or just as a treat!
Always fantastic. Eat anything on the menu. Even if it's something that doesn't appeal; it will taste fabulous. Waiting staff very attentive without being obtrusive. A little bit of theatre yes but the food is the best in Edinburgh.
The tasting menu was amazing! Every single dish was delicious and interesting. This is Michelin starred fine dining so expect small dishes with amuse bouches between course. Each dish is described before being presented. It’s silver service, and there’s a sommelier too with an extensive wine list. I don’t like the decor too much, kind of like a hotel bar area, but it’s really not important as the atmosphere, service and food are first class. They made a fuss for my birthday too as a surprise treat. Can’t wait to go back!
Absolutely exquisite cooking. Four distinctive appetisers including a beautiful veloute. The halibut and mango ceviche was divine. Scallop with a lightly curried sauce was gorgeous. Concentrated flavours in the partridge raviolo. Faultless service. Excellent wine list.
Great service, great food, lovely view, lovely for a date... you might not like the tast of everything but there was totally favourites. Mine was the lobster and the other dish with the mango and passion fruit. I had the 8 corse meal.
Great food. Excellent service. I recommend tasting menu with wine matching. Well worth the money. Classic interior design bright and warm.
Excellent service and welcoming staff here. Best fine dining experience I have ever had.
A lovely experience. My second visit after a 9 year gap. Faultless service and attentive staff. Food delicious. Would recommend.
Simply stunning. I can't say more. Staff very friendly and know what they are serving too. Great restaurant.
We had the four course lunch menu on a weekday. Excellent food, on par with the Michelin star rating. Attentive service, not too formal, exactly the right tone. Good wines and a very informative young sommelier. Not cheap, but what do you expect at this level.
My wife and i visited for lunch on Sat 28th to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. I knew the standard would be good but you guys blew us away. The food is obviously first class, but your staff are absolutely brilliant. Friendly, knowledgeable and super attentive. Thank you all for making our visit so memorable.
Fantastic attention to detail in both food and service, this is a great place for fine dining - there is a relaxed formality that's gives a sense of occasion without being stuffy.
Divine tastes, exquisitely presented by very kind and thoughtful staff. This restaurant is a culinary experience well worth having. I languished in the tasting menu.
From the moment we stepped through the door, we well looked after. The team were attentive, intuitive and not overbearing. We enjoyed the celebration tasting menu, which was varied, beautifully presented and most importantly truly delicious. An afternoon that we'll never forget for all the right reasons. Thank you.
Fine dining but not much else. As the first in the restaurant, it was nice having the place to myself in the corner for the first several minutes enjoying the quiet. Quickly the entire room filled up with reservations and the normal chatter of a restaurant filled the air. Ordering the tasting menu I expected to be given a rundown of ingredients and locations with each dish but sadly was not. A simple repeat of the ingredients in each dish as it was set down and that was it. The dishes were delicious, make no mistake. I left satisfied but not full, the tasting menu included dessert and a cheese plate was added in as well. Two glasses of wine to pair with the dishes. The staff were quick about and courteous, clearing plates, placing new cutlery, filling water glasses and cleaning wine glasses. Again, I did expect more description and sourcing of the dishes. Seated at noon I left by 2:30, a solid lunch. Overall it was a nice experience but left me wanting more. Sadly didn't have the same impact as a similar restaurant down the street did upon first visit.
Good overall but expected better from the Scottish culinary legend. Starters were best from this tasting menu. Service could have been more attentive. Bit disappointed coming back after 2 years, the food and experience used to be a lot better.
Ate lunch here recently, had been looking forward to it for a long time, been 15 years since last here. The tasting menu was generally strong, with the scallop and the ravioli dishes standing out. However the Wagu was disappointing, I think the focus should remain on Scottish seasonal produce and not try to attract with more exotic, but expensive ingredients which necessitate tiny portions. The mouth feel was absent, and with the piece being so thin the cooking was imprecise. Also the veal presentation was challenging.. tartare is never the prettiest dish, but this was reminiscent of a Sheba television commercial..tasted fine though! The wine selection was very well judged, in particular the NZ pinot noir was a perfect match for the ravioli.
Went for the lunch, rather than tasting menu so was pleasantly surprised to find that the amuse bouche (and bread) actually came with 6 or 7 different simple, but tasty, flavours for an immediate sense of variety to start. Somewhat more of a traditional vibe with lots of marble, very formal waiters (it took a few attempts to confirm that one amuse bouche was basically just a hash brown, rather than whatever convoluted name it was introduced as), mirrors and an ever so slightly colder feeling atmosphere. But the decor is still fresh and, importantly, comfy. Great service from the waiters who never let our water run dry, and were always on hand. However somewhat disappointing that after specifically asking for the return of the drinks menu once, it went missing again. Compounded by the inability to make a White Russian which I asked for, partially hoping one could be made and partially having had my drinks menu whisked away, so I had to guess! Perhaps the lack of White Russian was not such a bad thing, as when we got hot drinks after dessert, they were served with milk that was close enough to it's use by date that it curdled into lumps floating in the coffee! Having said that, a swift apology and replacements followed quickly, and I suppose it's not necessarily reasonably to expect everywhere to have a well stocked bar that can cater to White Russian cocktails, milk that is fresh and the hazelnut flavour I requested for the hot chocolate (it was still good, without) Food was faultless, with terrifically simple flavours (gespatcho, tappenade, tomato salsa, crusty bread etc.) to start and more complicated flavours for main (pork jowl) and to finish (chocolate opera cake)
I really enjoyed the food here. I had the tasting menu and thought was well executed overall. Reason for four stars 1) halibut ceviche - I love the combination but the passion fruit gel overpowers the flavored which tips the balance 2) ravioli - nice and rich sauce, Al dente pasta but they couldn’t tell me what’s inside the ravioli 3) red cabbage with the deer is a bit too rich. Couldn’t finish it 4) while I love the dessert, the flavour combi works especially when you have a bite of everything. But the delicious maple pecan granola takes a lot of effort and pardon my etiquette while cutting into it And did I mention I love the kombu butter with the sour dough bread
The Learn then Lunch was a great experience. The day started at the Cook School with a great demonstration of 3 seasonal dishes. It was then a short walk to the Restaurant. The food was first class the only draw back was when we tried to enhance the wine package that came with the Learn then Lunch deal to matched wines with each of the 5 courses. We had to ask about this numerous times before eventually getting to speak to the Sommelier who sorted us out. The only other niggle was that there were no clean towels in the toilet. Having said that, it's a great restaurant, I will be back and I would recommend.
I have to admit, the overall experience had a bit of a rough start. After trying to cancel our reservation given that we were likely going to be late, we learned about the cancellation policy requiring 48h notice otherwise a £90(!!) per person cancellation charge would apply. We decided to make it and this was overall the right choice! - The food : overall, food is delicious. The amuses bouches are fun and delicious. The autumn menu we all selected was copious but manageable. Highlight for me was the scallop, cooked to perfection. Why not 5* ? The salt level... All the food was nicely seasoned but the overall level of salt was too high for our collective taste (6 adults). - the service : was great overall with excellent attention to details. We felt a little rushed at start which is understandable as we arrived at 8pm. 4* mostly due to the unbelievable cancellation policy. - atmosphere: beautiful plating, nice decor and the right quiet & upscale. Missing one star comes from the overall quietness on a Thursday night as apart our table, only 2 other tables were actually occupied.
3.5. A good experience - alright for a special occasion, but I expected better (in certain areas) for a restaurant that’s supposed to be one of the topmost in Scotland. Food is classic French, done by a Scottish chef and restaurant has been around for several decades. Restaurant is small-ish, simple decor; some tables are awkwardly arranged so asked to be moved. Service was cordial but lacking. I’d expect the waitstaff to give more background on the restaurant, provenance of the food, details on what we were eating - such details were not supplied. This changes the dining experience. Frustratingly, cups, cutlery and plates lingered on the table long after serving their purposes. Nobody was bussing. Things were cluttered. Restaurant arranged desserts in a delightfully ornate arrangement for a birthday … but they initially forgot about said birthday, and had to confiscate what we were eating before re-presenting. All in all, great food and a fun experience, but not super deserving of $600 for 3.
The food was the star. From canapés to desert, everything was well prepared with great flavours and presentation. The food service staff were great. If you love wine, this may not be your restaurant. The food menu was GBP185 per person and the prestige wine paring was GBP200 per person. Two of our four pours of Rhone white wine had so significant tartrate crystals, from a bottom of bottle pour, that the wine was unappealing. One wine came out with a different glass shape for one guest. The 2016 Chateau Talbot was another bottom of the bottle pour with significant sediment in the glass. The Somellier gave significant resistance to correcting the wine issues. I would recommend this restaurant for the food but not if you would like to have wine with your dinner.
Not for us I’m afraid. Only taster menus and a limited normal menu, for the price we was expecting outstanding flavours and larger dishes. The taster menus are £110 per person. The service was very good, but we ended up not completing our food as it was not very nice to be honest, and leaving. The wine we ordered was £50 per bottle, yet on checking online a bottle of the same wine was £8.50! We ended up getting a takeaway!
Slightly intimidating high end French restaurant with big reputation. Felt a bit overly self-confident and did not fully live up to it. Main course of venison not special. Very pricey and not quite worth it.
I have to say that the food was good with few dishes worthing the price but in average... Overpriced. The ambient is not what you expect from a Michelin star restaurant, furniture looks from IKEA... Actually it reminds me to Stansted Lounge. Also, the timing between dishes a bit long... We chose the Tasting menu and spent around 3h in the restaurant. In general, it does not worth spending 135£/p (drinks not included) and would not recommend to come.
I had eight courses here. But the best thing is the ice cream. Disappointed. If this restaurant come to London, it will definitely close within a month. SAVE £110 AND BUY A TICKET TO LONDON.
