We ate at Whighams at the end of July and had such a great experience. We started with the Shetland blue shell mussels and some artisan sourdough bread. The mussel sauce was so good—perfect for dipping the bread. For mains, my husband had the roasted cauliflower, chickpea, and butternut squash Goan curry, and I went with the linguine. He loved his curry, said it was packed with flavor. My linguine was also really tasty—the tomatoes, chili, and olives worked so well together, and I enjoyed it with a glass of Chamuyo Malbec. We couldn’t resist finishing with the sticky toffee pudding, and it was absolutely fantastic. Warm, soft, a little crunchy, topped with ice cream and caramel sauce—it was amazing. Highly recommend ordering it! We were so hungry and everything was so good that we didn’t even stop to take pictures.
We didn’t eat but a good range of drinks very cosy alcove will go back
Excellent experience! It was our first day visiting and our hotel recommended we try this place for lunch. The service was excellent, and everything we ordered was far above our expectations! We tried the haggis croquettes, calamari, vegetable goan curry, and fish & chips! The toffee pudding was delicious, and we ordered Chantilly cream to go with it. Highly recommend. Atmosphere 12/10
Booked for Pre Rugby hospitality. Excellent experience from initial booking to welcome on the day. Great communication and the food and service on the day was excellent. Very happy guests. Would absolutely recommend
Overall a great wine bar! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My wife and I recently visited Whighams Wine Cellars and had a fantastic experience. The vibe is lovely and relaxed, with a good mix of both young and old patrons, making it feel welcoming for everyone. The Highlights: • Service: The staff made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. They took the time to explain the wine menu and other drink options as soon as we sat down. • The Tasting Experience: We opted for the "Red" and "Staff Pick" tasting menus. All the wines were excellent and very well priced. The accompanying tasting notes were a great touch, providing interesting details about the wines and their regions. • Atmosphere: We enjoyed the relaxed and cosy environment so much that we actually returned the following night for a few more glasses! 🍷 If you are looking for a top-tier wine bar in Edinburgh with a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere, this is definitely the spot. We'll certainly be back! 🥂✨
We just went for drinks so no food rating but would definitely go back to sample the menu another time - we just stopped in for drinks before dinner… and then after dinner the next day as well. The atmosphere is fab and the setting is really cool, you can really see where the old cellars would have been. The staff were friendly, service was fast, and there is a great selections of wines and cocktails - great date night location
For New Year’s Eve 2023, we were a party of seven who had traveled quite some distance to be together: two from Sweden, two from Switzerland, one from Paraguay, and ourselves from the U.S. We were all able to meet in Edinburgh for just 36 hours, and our experience with Whighams made our visit an absolute delight. The restaurant offered a five-course meal with wine pairings. Every dish was delicious, and we enjoyed the wine pairings very much. We were especially appreciative of the fact that they did not have a second seating. It was an act of generosity to have one seating, at a leisurely pace, with the option to stay until midnight (which we very nearly did). We truly appreciated the warm and friendly service, the cozy atmosphere, the amazing food, and the gift of time to ring in the new year with dear friends from far away. Highly recommended!
Extensive drinks list, great service and food was incredible. We had the fish and chips, burger, sticky toffee pudding and lemon curd tartlet and everything was fantastic. Service was attentive and helpful:)
I returned again recently for a wine tasting session. It was really well run, very enjoyable and the nibbles were great. I will definitely be looking out for more wine tastings. ‐------------------------------------------ Good quality food and a nice selection of wines. Lively atmosphere. Friendly staff. Definitely worth trying.
Came here for the Christmas menu and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Me and my grandmother got the prawn cocktails and woww those bowls we sooo clean. The cleanest I've ever seen probably. Shout out to those dishwashers man!
This came as a complete surprise!! It's a bar right??..great people, great wine & beer... fantastic music.and OMG great food too?? That's a score 💯 Be sure to try the cod and the hummus with caramelized onions. and ...sticky toffee pudding is ridiculous!!!! Hats of to the chef and staff🧑🍳.
For a pub the food was fresh and good. Recommend skink. Service was very good. Fries are great. Good selection of beer too. Dog friendly
Fantastic Food Very professional and helpful staff Had lunch here and a great atmosphere too
Really lovely food and service with a smile. Good options for gluten free with clearly labelled. Gluten free oat cakes to die for! Had a starter, main & dessert with excellent wine and an alcohol cafe to end the night with. Also great outdoor smoking facilities with heaters! You don’t get this experience often! Will definitely be returning to this venue for another meal. Highly recommend!
Great food and staff here. Warm and friendly, with live music on many nights of the week too
Great food for a good price, very good wine selection and the kindest service on Edinburgh, specially given by Elsa 😘
Very good kitchen, nice ambiente
Cullen skink ! The best soup I had ever try in my life! The waiters its very kind and funny!
Good food and wine list. We visited on a Sunday and there was excellent live jazz!
Great place to have a lunch or a dinner. Lots of beers, great wine list, nice food. In rush hours the service can be a little slow.
A favourite haunt for almost 4 decades! Another visit yesterday to celebrate a birthday, food fabulous and staff as fantastic as ever !
Great atmosphere. Great food. Mariana was a 10/10.
Found this lovely place by accident, what a happy accident! My wife and I absolutely loved it. Food was wonderful, wine flights were tremendous, and service was amazing. We had our own little “cave” to sit in all to ourselves; very romantic. Also enjoyed live jazz on a Sunday night. Could not recommend more! Wish we had one of these in our neighborhood.
Recommended to me be the concierge at the Caledonian and did not disappoint. The Cullen skink soup, which I had never heard of, was just delicious. Smoky, rich, and perfect. The chips/fries were perfect! And the sticky toffee pudding with honeycomb on top was just amazing. Prices are also very reasonable.
Delicious food, good and friendly service and nice atmosphere.
Great cosy little cellar with bookable cubbies for about 10
The food has always been excelent. The wine list is exceptional and the beer menu for a wine bar is first class. Truly is a hidden gem of Edinburgh.
First time here with my friend and it was a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. A great choice of wines which we struggled to choose from. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable and friendly, we'll definitely be back.
Total class from top to bottom. They went out of their way for us this evening to top off an already incredible night. Their sticky toffee pudding is insanely good. A must stop if you're in Edinburgh!
I have only been here once to hear some jazz a few years ago. Very lively place, can get a bit noisy but great atmosphere. Good place to eat. The bar is one side and the dining is on the other, lots of little arches to sit under. There are two entrances on different sides of the street. I met up with a good friend I hadn't seen for a while, so it was a good meeting spot. There is outside seating. Staff were very friendly, attentive and welcoming. They have a fab cocktail selection, wines beers and spirits as well as a good menu, we loved our visit especially being able to catch with a good friend.
Great atmosphere, wide seating area and plenty wines choices we had a white dry bottle and it was delicious, we didn’t have any food but the dishes looked pretty tasty and well presented! They also have a outdoor seating area, very central location on the edge of Charlotte square. I didn’t take any pictures this time but I would definitely go again. There are also bar seats so solo wine drinkers will not feel left out 😊 Perfect for a posh wine date or an elegant work dinner!
Whighams Wine Cellars was a solid first-night dining experience in Edinburgh. Service was friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in — they made us feel right at home. The vibe is relaxed and a little hidden, tucked a few steps below street level, giving it a cozy, slightly dim atmosphere that works well. The fish and chips were very good, though portion size could be a touch bigger. The Cullen skink was also good — rich and flavorful. Prices were fair, and the location was convenient for us. Overall, a comfortable spot with good food, great service, and a laid-back local feel. Saluti
Long time since visiting Whigams. Still the same, not much has changed. Perhaps go again next year. Very old school. Good place for visitors perhaps to find an establishment that stays the same and does not try to be trendy. 10/10 for that.
A big pub with a restaurant we enjoyed our food and drink here. Seafood features a lot in the menu as does lots of Scottish produce. Went for the seafood platter for two and it is indeed a feast, we had fries and bread too to keep it company. Innes & Gunn original time wash it down. Didn’t stop there, had sticky toffee pudding and ice cream and Anster Cheddar and Highland Blue cheeses.
A pleasant lunch. Downstairs location which creates a very pleasant atmosphere. Spacious and good size and spaced tables. Staff were friendly. The menu is surprisingly small, no set lunch, but the food we had was excellent. Glass of house wine was also very decent. Coffee was excellent. Feels more like a wine bar than a restaurant in some ways which is fair enough. We enjoyed the lunch and would certainly return. Price was about standard for restaurants in the area.
A nice and lively bar right in the heart of Edinburgh city centre, just steps from Princes Street! Descending from street level, you’ll find yourself in this unusual yet elegant bar, with neat little subterranean niches to one side, and the main bar opening up to the right. The niches are great for a more private drink, with padded semicircular seating and table in the centre. Anyone over about 5ft 6in tall we want to be aware that the entry is low, so mind your head on! A nice selection of beers and other beverages are on offer, along with a nice food menu to sate your hunger.
Great burger, with the possibility to add bacon and cheeses. The perfect setup for the perfect burger!
Lovely setting in a grand old building. The service was very attentive and nice. Food was pretty good. The Goan fish curry was well executed (good spice) and was nice with a bottle of Macon Chardonnay. Really enjoyable evening and would return. Reasonably priced as well.
It is a really good place for a nice meet-up, large or small. Good vibes and nice cozy booths that keep your group gathered and offer little to no interruptions. A definite recommendation for locals and visitors.
Christmas menu disappointing especially dry turkey. We should have sent it back. Most tables empty despite us being contacted to pre-order.
