The Magnum Bar & Restaurant

We had an amazing experience at the Magnum restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious, and the portions were incredibly generous. The Magnum dish never disappoints, and I'm always impressed by the fresh and amazing quality of the food. It's evident that the chefs truly love what they do, and it reflects in every bite. Highly recommend this place for a delightful dining experience!

This was a wonderfull eating experience as the Magnum excelled with the food , the service , atmosphere and general ambience which were excellent. We had the corner table and were immediately struck by the professional and freindly service from all staff , the dining room is cosy and intimate and was full for the entire time we were there but the staff werent hurried and we recieved the food with plenty of time between courses so didnt feel rushed . The star of the show though is the food which was truly wonderfull , I had the cullen skink to start , the wagyu burger and then the sticky toffee pudding to finish , we then retired to the well stocked bar for a few cocktails and a blether with the locals and staff , an excellent place for a great meal away from the touristy masses , highly recommended.

This was probably the best meal we had in Edinburgh! It is off the beaten path from the tourist focused areas which we loved! High quality food. Great service.

My partner and I spent 4 evenings in Edinburgh last week and dined at The Magnum twice despite attempting to try a new place each day. We just had to come back because no other place could live up to the quality, atmosphere, cosiness and sincerity of The Magnum. Amazing staff and a wonderful clientele of mostly locals - a testament to the effort and passion put into this little corner of the city. The dish “Aubergine Involtini” was a strike of culinary genius and the little puff pastries served as an appetizer were a great surprise. Both evenings we arrived without a reservation and were seated at the bar since the restaurant was fully booked - this was truly a strike of luck as we would sit alongside kind local regulars who really made us feel at home. We are so grateful for the wholesome evenings and hope to come back in the future. Fun Fact: As soon as we landed back in Denmark, we ordered 3 of the whiskeys we tried at The Magnum: Auchentoshan (both Three Wood and American Oak) and the Talisker Port Ruighe. The bottles should arrive by mail today.

We had our lunch a month ago in Magnum which is located at a relatively secluded part of New Town. It was our first time to have venison, and it was better that what we anticipated - the meat was done quite juicy and tender, though less flavourful than the other main we ordered, the slow braised beef daube. I loved the haggis beeps and tatties as well, tasty and not overwhelming strong in flavour. And they offer good dessert too. Every dishes we had was nicely presented, and really friendly service.

This is hands down the best restaurant we've been to in Edinburgh. The food was well prepared and delicate, the meat was cooked to perfection, the Cullen Skink was the most flavorful I ever had and the staff was lovely. Would definitely recommend!

Hands down best meal I’ve had in a longggg time. This place looks like a pub, but is run like a top tier restaurant. Everyone is hustling and bustling to provide the best service to you. The first evening, we had the venison, market catch, veggie soup, sticky toffee pudding, mango sorbet and chocolate marquis. It was absolutely sensational. We ended up loving it so much we came back the next evening for dinner and tried new dishes. The second evening we had the soup again, Korean fried chicken sliders, bacon cheeseburger, the steak with garlic butter, and the beef cheeks. We also had the panna cotta- holy moly best thing ever. Do yourself a favor and dine at this establishment at least once- make reservations as it does get busy in the evenings. There is not one thing I would change about this place- truly a phenomenal meal (both times!) and wonderful staff! Thank you to Lewis and Olivia for providing us with hands on experience and truly the best service we’ve had!

Service was the best it could be. We were a group of tourists without a reservation wanting to try the cullen skink, but they had no place. They managed to accommodate us very kindly and offered us some snacks. We then tasted some whiskey and they recommended us according to our petitions and offered us a small sip to confirm. Everything, food and drinks, was really good but the best was the service we had. Would absolutely come back.

This is definitely a restaurant worthy of being in the top discussions for edinburgh. This was quite possibly the best food we have had in our visit to Scotland. The service was prompt and knowledgeable about what the head chef had to showcase. The restaurant is away from the busiest sections but worth the walk away from the chaos. The duck breast was amongst the best duck dish I have ever had. The skin perfectly crisp, the meat perfectly cooked, and the flavour combinations were exquisite. My wife had the monk fish, it was also cooked spectacularly. The seasonings and the entree was also a standout. I would put this up with many Michelin starred establishments we have tried in terms of the dishes themselves.

What a great find! Definitely 5 stars. The monkfish was so delicious … every mouthful felt like a treat. There was a delay with my dessert - they came to apologise before I even realised and made a great gesture as an apology. Service was simply top. My apologies for forgetting to tip. A great experience. Might have to come again to try the haggis bonbons …

Even though we arrived a little late compared to Scottish standards (it was 11pm) the barmaid welcomed us with a smile and served us with kindness, without rushing us and making us feel at ease! Excellent choice between Gin and Whisky!

Lovely staff in this bar and restaurant, they really look after you, but with a relaxed manner. Genuine and friendly, the staff make you feel like you are with friends. The food was really high quality in both taste and presentation, the flavours were superb. They also have some interesting beers with nice guest beers too. Definitely going back next time I visit.

We arrived and were seated in the dining room at the table directly across from the stairs. We were provided with menus and given 10 minutes to peruse. We were given tap water and ordered a bottle of the Malbec. The food was a Very good standard and the complimentary small bites between the courses a very nice touch. I had wanted to eat here for a while and I wasn’t disappointed.

Incredible service, kitchen is open a bit later than others and closes at 9:30. If you’re cutting it close, call ahead and let them know you’re coming. They said they can wait a few minutes. Super nice people and the food is excellent. The Cullen Skink was delicious!

Fabulous eatery with some outstanding dishes on offer, quiet location but still convenient location. Super friendly staff as well. Our group had a fantastic evening!

Six people in our party. Service was great, food ranged from bread and olives to seafood and beef and salad. Everyone enjoyed their meal. To finish it off was the strawberries, cream and pistachio cake. Found this gem from reading Rick Stevs guide book. Definitely worth eating there.

Amazing food! Took my 12 year old too! Service and food just wonderful. Salmon superb and my son said his chicken was great. Had an affogato to top it off. And my son had the homemade trio of ice cream. Perfect!!!

We had Christmas dinner at The Magnum last Saturday and I have to say that food was absolutely delicious 🤤❤️ We had few small plates and turkey dinner. I can highly recommend this place! Also great service by Sara. Thank you for a lovely night!

Oh my goodness, this lunch was delicious. We ordered various small plates: open ravioli, ham and potato croquettes, bang bang cauliflower, calamari, duck bao, and rocket salad. Delicious. All perfect sizes for two people to share. Service was excellent and everything down to the background music was perfect. Love, love, love The Magnum.

Genuinely exquisite experience. Served by delightful, warm staff, and the place had an "understated buzz" - a mixture of visitors like ourselves and fond regulars. The food is outstanding. Thoughtfully curated, every dish complex and complimenting, and 3 courses will leave you absolutely satisfied. We'll be "regulars" too from now on!

I tried their Cullen Skink, and it is the best soup I have ever tried. Ever! Consider me a big fan. Very, very friendly and polite staff. Background music in low volume. I will certainly visit again if I get a chance.

Wonderful spot! Fantastic, friendly service, plus really tasty food. We enjoyed the fish and chips (lager battered haddock or cod?) and venison strip loin. Both dishes were perfectly cooked.

Was in Edinburgh this week and was recommended this charming restaurant by The Hoxton, where I was staying. Although slightly off the beaten path, it’s an absolute gem that deserves far more attention. The service, food, and overall atmosphere were truly outstanding—warm, welcoming, and full of character. A big thank you to Olivia, who took the time to guide us through the delicious menu and impressive selection of local beers and whiskies. Her knowledge and friendliness made the experience even more special. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Edinburgh!

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of dining at The Magnum on a trip to Edinburgh. It was terrific! Kinga was our server and Vincent's steady hand over the details made all the difference! The food was fantastic, from the gazpacho shots to the amuse bouche was a welcomed and delicious surprise! The mains were equally delectable! This is quiet neighborhood place with a warm atmosphere and impeccable service!

Visiting Edinburgh and stumbled across The Magnum. Absolutely spectacular food. Scallops on first visit and went back the next day for Cullen Skink. The best culinary experience. A lovely spacious and gentle atmosphere with great service. Highly recommended.

It was a delightful and delicious experience on a rainy Edinburgh day. It was a random decision to enter the restaurant and Gosia welcomed us and her service, suggestions were all amazing. We would love to thank you to chef whoever you are, you made our day 😍

My wife and I went here just before Christmas for her birthday. The place is great. We were advised when we arrived that they were very busy and there will be a delay in getting our food, no problem we weren't in a rush so all good. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. We had a cocktail and a whisky to start the evening, brilliant. They brought some tasty nibble then the starter, excellent. Then a pallette cleansers again great. Then I had the venison for my main, I must admit I was a little disappointed while the venison was cooked perfectly it was a little tasteless I've had venison many times before and this was a little lacking. Food wise, that is the only complaint. The wine, we ordered the malbec and at £41 a bottle not really up to it sadly. The wine is quite expensive here. Other than those niggles a good place to visit.

Food is very well arranged and presentation is great. But I find the taste to be bland, especially when it was so good looking. My wife liked the taste, though. Service is generally very good. It was the only place that would accommodate us on the Easter Friday evening.

Very nice restaurant, located in a very charming corner, the food was delicious, we tried the Haggis and the Chicken Supreme, both weee very delicious, full of flavors and very beautiful presented. There is a nice pub/restaurant atmosphere, with lots going on. The staff is friendly and attentive.

A great evening with friends. Top class food and wine with efficient service. The only fault is that the place was so cold that it spoilt an other wise great evening hence the 4 star.

It was too busy for their own good. We went in for dinner, and waited quite a while for our food. The burger was extremely greasy for my taste. I couldn’t even bite the burger without the patty sliding all over the place! We then spent 45 minutes painstakingly waiting for desert, which was unacceptable for just some ice cream. Only reason it got 3 stars instead of 2 was because the food, when you could eat it, was quite good. However, would still not recommend for anyone.
