Impeccable dinner, wide selection of starters, all the plates were amazingly cooked and presented by Erica, our incredible waitress for the evening. Highly recommended for anyone seeking for a true Scottish experience!
Highly recommended!! Went with some friends, one of whom is vegetarian and we all went for the tasting menu. Didn't regret it one bit. We chose the wine pairing with the meal and it works really well. I had the non veg option and everything was so good. My absolute highlight was the venison though. Just so tasty!! The music and playlist brought back some old memories and really made out night. The ladies provided a wonderful service and can I give a shout out to the owner Lorna who was just so wonderful and even changed a couple of things out in terms of meal options. Would absolutely go back there and recommend it to anyone who wishes to enjoy a nice meal in Edinburgh
I cannot say enough great things about this restaurant! My husband and I both ordered the tasting menu, I had the vegetarian and he the meat. Every dish was delicious, even things we were not sure we would like (looking at you haggis). And the waitress was so knowledgeable and sweet, she explained all the dishes to us and talked with us about visiting the area. We loved it and highly recommend going and trying out a bunch of different things.
The food is great, especially the Haggis Parcels, and the steak is really tender. The sauces are a bit on the salty side, but if you don’t use too much, it’s fine. However, the atmosphere is quite noisy. People are talking loudly, and you can easily hear every word from tables two rows away without even trying. It’s not the best spot for a quiet, relaxing meal.
I booked this place for the tasting menu for our anniversary and we had a wonderful experience. Easy dish was wonderful, beautiful presentation and play of tastes and colours with seasonal food. Lorna waited our table and she was excellent in making us feel welcomed and special on our anniversary. We had a complimentary anniversary dessert which was so tasty with a lovely announcement - turned out another couple had who also chosen the place for their anniversary. :) Highly recommend the tasting dish.
Excellent food! This was my favorite stop in Edinburgh and I feel lucky that we got to eat here. The bread was soft and the butter tasty, the tomatoes were the best and the fish I had was buttery soft! The servers were really attentive and polite. Definitely recommend and would come back.
We had the 6 courses set menu taste of Scotland. I would say, the quality is really good and slightly above my expactation. The 6 courses set is strongly recommended. The vension and the haggis parcel was the best. We were quite early, arrived around 12.30. The whole restaurant was pretty empty. The atmosphere was great.
The food was lovely! We had Smoked Salmon Mousse, Ribeye Steak, Spring Green Risotto, and Toffee dessert. I saw a few reviews saying that the food was bland, but to us it was just right :)
This small and cozy bistro is wonderful for a night out. The service was exceptional and the food was delightful. They offer a 5 course menu that includes wine. The wine list is very nice. The restaurant is on the lower level so do not be deterred if when you look in the up door it appears empty, worth the walk downstairs especially if you are seeking Scottish food!
The Cellar Door is a really “Gold Restaurant”! The staff was really kind, precious and professional ever since we entered. We were two of us, with a traditional and tasting menu of six meals, one better than the other. A perfect combination of meat, vegetables and sweet sauces 👍🏻 The service was accurate and we never waited too long and at the same time we talked pleasantly with the manager of our table. The price was perfect and balanced for the quality of the cuisine and of the service. A must try if traveling to Edinburgh! I will definitely come back!
We had the 4 course taster served before 5pm , Veronica served us and did a great job, getting us settled in, going through the options , confirming the order and then serving it up. Drinks were brought by another server. Really enjoyed the variety of dishes and flavours, some never tried before. The restaurant is down stairs so don’t be put off if the bar is empty, it will be busy down there.
Nice small restaurant, staff were perfect, just attentive enough without hanging about. Good was good quality. Portion size was perfect, sides and starters good. Varied selection of drinks. Very nice experience, would definitely go back.
Impeccable dining experience! The service was top notch, and we were even given a complimentary glass of Prosecco for a reservation mishap. Service was very efficient and friendly. They offer plenty of vegetarian options. The food was absolutely delicious!!
Fantastic experience. The food was excellent, the special cocktails were delicious, and the service was second-to-none. Great atmosphere.
Tried the tasting menu. One of the best food experiences for me. Everything was so delicious and the service was lovely too.
5-star service. Great location, lovely place. Foods were great in size and taste. Nothing fails. Get the mussels for starters and sticky toffee for desserts, you can't possibly regret it.
Was very excited for the 6 course tasting menu and loved that there were drinks paired with it! Will happily come here again and I recommend it to friends too!
Definitely recommend this place! In the city center its is easy to get there although if you're physically impaired it might be a bit more challenging, depending on where is your table. The environment is nice: the music, lightning/illumination, decoration by itself, with comfortable chair and table (it's terrible having bad chairs for dining). The decoration is simple/clean without many details but/and in an elegant style. The service was warm, welcoming and friendly. It was considerably fast. We haven't waited much for our food, but it was their first day back to activities after lockdown. The food was good, presentation and taste for both: main course and dessert. The main course was venison, which was tasty and tender ( it doesn't come with side chips you have to order it separately). The dessert was sticky toffee pudding (a classic it's always a classic). It was really fluffy what made the toffee and the ice cream work really well. The cost/benefit is for sure worth it, and as I said before: I definitely recommend it!!
Booked this restaurant on a whim and ended up doing the six course tasting menu as I couldn't decide on all the fabulous food. Every course was full of flavour and perfectly balanced. The venison was the highlight for me, and is possibly one of the best plates of food I've had the pleasure to eat. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the vibe was very cosy on a cold Scottish evening. Loved it, will be back next time I visit Edinburgh.
Absolutely amazing! The food deserves a Michelin star. Staff very lovely, they explained every course to us and were very very friendly. The strawberry pavlova’s taste is from heaven. A must try when in Edinburgh. Definitely we’ll be back!
The food is delicious, and the staff are all extremely friendly. There are vegetarian and gluten free options, and a reservation can easily be made online. Definitely recommend!!
Everything was amazing! We dropped in early, about 6 pm, and we were promptly seated and had our orders taken. The wait staff was extremely friendly and the food was delicious! I would definitely recommend this place. My only criticism is that there is one corner that is fairly dark, but if you're not seated there you'll be fine.
Very nice authentic Scottish restaurant. The service was perfect and the waitress was so sweet with our little baby. Even the owner stopped by our table for a wee chat. Everyone was very welcoming and the food was incredibly good!
Excellent options and reasonable price. Best fish and ships I had in Scotland and I sure recommend the haggis spring rolls and the cheesecake. Friendly staff and good music on the background.
We had the Taste of Scotland 6 course menu. The food was excellent with reasonable prices but still very high quality and creative dishes. The service was quick and staff were very nice. I mentioned that it was my wife's birthday and they made it extra special. Thanks for a very memorable birthday dinner.
We had a really good meal here! The food is quite well-priced for Edinburgh, and it's a nice and cosy restaurant. The staff are very friendly. The beer menu is larger than I'd expect. There's only really one vegetarian option but the burger was very good.
Really excellent little place! We came for an early dinner with an 8-year-old. Food was great for grown-ups and kiddo. Special shout-out to the haggis parcel (which is parceled in a sort of crispy wonton shell - really nice.)
Had really tasty vegetarian lunch there, can recommend the 3 course menu during lunch time. It was pleasantly empty on a Wednesday afternoon, so really quick service. The staff was lovely as well!
Lovely restaurant, relaxed fairly informal atmosphere with attentive and good humoured staff. We had the 6 course taster menu and couldn't fault it.
Great Scottish food. My favourite place to eat in the whole world and I'm well travelled. The menu changes but the standard never changes. So so so good and great price for its standard. Will continue to visit when I visit Edinburgh
Fantastic meal this evening. I had the taster menu which was utterly delicious. The taster menu is accompanied by a drinks menu and I can thoroughly recommend their choice of wines. What is more (and since I now have a dog!), it was dog friendly. A really lovely evening. The much larger restaurant is downstairs, so the picture is only of the smaller couple of tables in the upstairs area.
I had dinner in this restaurant in 2016. Last Saturday I visited it again while another journey to Edinburgh. Food is still amazing, very good, very tasty. Erika from the Service was funny and very helpfull and adorable with her charming Italian kindness. Thanks for a great Dinnerexperience.
We were bought a 6 taster meal for my birthday Inc the wine pairing. Really enjoyed the food and wine, each course was excellent, highly recommended.
An excellent restaurant offering a small selection of traditional Scottish dishes with a refined twist. The tasting menu is excellent. The decision not to offer whisky is unusual, but this is more than compensated for by the excellent locally produced gin and rum. The service deserves a special mention, particularly Luciano, who was friendly and impeccable. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience Scottish hospitality and delicious, well-balanced dishes.
Wonderful experience. The food is amazing (though slightly small portion sizes) with inventive drink and dish design. The ambiance was neat, being in a basement but with natural lighting. Our server Lucy was great at fielding our questions and making recommendations we really liked and was generally excellent.
Absolutely fabulous tasting menu with wine pairing. Could not fault either the quality of ingredients or service. Highly recommended.
This is a great traditional Scottish restaurant with really homely service. The food was excellent but the service really made the evening special. The two waitresses looking after us were warm and attentive and offered some great advice in relation to whisky
Most places were booked for dinner but luckily this restaurant still had reservations for a Saturday night at 8PM for 2. When you get there, inside there are stairs that go down. It looks like it's empty at first but when you turn into the main room, it's filled with people. The haggis was expensive for 1 little pastry but delicious. The venicin, rib eye steak with pepper sauce, and toffee pudding were all delicious. They have a tasting menu option as well. Service was attentive and they have a good whiskey selection. A little pricey for whisky compared to others but enjoyable nonetheless. All that and 3 whisky's came to 127BGP including the 10% tip.
We tried the 6 course rastning menu and it was so good. The haggis was stunning. The staff were so friendly and described every dish carefully. Only - is that its very noisy so dont expert a romantic dinner.
Not the best food in town but it was alright. On Mother's Day, they had 2 courses for £19.95, 3 for £24.95. Service was probably slightly under par for the service charges in the bill. The waitress mixed up our orders (only a table of 3), and the food came out rather slow - there were only 3 other tables of 2 each that evening. Atmosphere was pretty decent though.
Nice place with very friendly staff. The food was good, but it would of been nice to have some Scottish seafood, as it was the Scottish tasting menu.
Tasty food, large portion size. We went for lunch, and we walked away feeling like we ate dinner haha. I recommend sitting in the main section of the restaurant. They initially put us in a dim corner round the back away from the main room next to a large noisy table. There were a few empty tables for two persons in the main section so I asked to move and they were accomodating. Our waitress was friendly and made sure we were fine throughout the meal.
Food is really good, but on the expensive side. It's scottish food but with a modern twist
If you're looking for a restaurant that perfectly reinvents a condensed version of Scottish cuisine, this is the place to come ! The tasting menu "Taste of Scotland" is great. The food is refined and excellent. The setting and service are good but have more of a pub-like atmosphere, which doesn’t quite match the sophistication of the cuisine. And also, it's a bit strange to have Italian waitresses in a Scottish restaurant, but they're cool.
Hard review to write. Pros: friendly service, good location, kind of them to seat us when they were basically fully booked, generous glass of wine (flavoursome too) Cons: the ‘taste of Scotland’ tasting menu was really quite stingy. All the courses were essentially canapés except the main - nicely garnished but the pork was far too fatty. Kind of left feeling hungry, especially as there was about a 20 min wait between some of the courses. I think their ala carte menu would have been more generous.
The food was mediocre and satisfactory, but the price didn’t match up. To start, it took 28 minutes for us to order our meals which was a bit annoying, trying so hard to get the waitress’ attention. The starters were really small. The haggis bonbon starter was £7 for 3 pieces, but the side is £5 for 3 pieces - very confusing? The starters were all quite small too, half a bite per person and it was done. The mains my parents ordered (salmon) were such small portions that they were still hungry and had to order fries, which arrived so long after we ordered that we were ready for the bill at that point. I ordered the vegan risotto and it was incredibly bland. It had 0 flavour - not even salt! It just felt like a quick weeknight meal I would throw together at home, not an expensive restaurant meal. Finally when it came time to get the bill, it was again like chasing down a waitress who was hiding from us! It took so long to finally get someone attention so we could lay and leave. Overall, disappointed.
Got an itison deal for £24 for 2 courses plus a glass of fizz for 2 people. They have a limited menu just for that deal. The tomatoes in the starter salad were sweet and the chicken terrine was lovely albeit the accompanied toast was burnt (well didn’t bother to complain). Fish and chips were ok. Overall didn’t feel like it was a good deal as there are so many nice restaurants with set lunch offers close by. But the waitresses were attentive. Oh as its name suggests the main floor is in the cellar with no lift though they do have a few tables on ground floor, but not sure if the toilets are, so people who have trouble walking the stairs - beware.
The restaurant was quite empty compared to packed restaurants around the area, and that should have been a sign. Two stars because the food was very disappointing, the burger was very dry, fries were very greasy and definitely reheated, and the steak was of poor quality and not cooked to our request, side of vegetables covered in butter. Shame due to the spot, nice atmosphere and decent service (although didn't take seriously that we were disappointed with the food). Definitely not worth the price.
Still hungry. The butternut squash gnocchi had only 3 gnocchi. I ate it in 4 bites. The trout was actually salmon. The venison was as hard as a hockey puck. Haggis starter and tomato soup starter were good. The meal took 45mins to come out and was more expensive than it was worth. The staff was nice though.
Nice spot, shame about the food Popped in without a booking, hoping for the best. The setting was pleasant, and the staff were decent enough. Sadly, the food was dreadful—tasted like something knocked up in a student kitchen after closing time. Honestly, would’ve been better off with a supermarket sandwich. Wouldn’t recommend.
