Real delicious authentic Chinese food with menu for authentic Chinese and American Chinese dishes. Four of us ordered fish dishes which is more than what we needed and that had generous portions but all dishes were so delicious that we ate everything lol. We got 酸汤肥牛 a sauerkraut beef dish, 干锅包菜, stir fried cabbage, 干锅豆腐, stir fried tofu with potatoes, 小炒肉, green peppers with pork, and 三杯鸡 a chicken dish. My personal fav is stir fried cabbage and the tofu. They were so well seasoned with fresh ingredients. Chicken was a little too savory. But after all really friendly service, they even gave 杏仁酥 and fortune cookies as dessert for free. Def a 5/5!!
Tried the assorted clay pot for the first time and it was amazing! Everything tasted homemade and the soup was especially wonderful. The other dishes we ordered were also great. Really enjoyed the meal!
We had a wonderful time with Yelp at Koi Fine Asian Cuisine Restaurant. It was a great event where we got to try not only their great cocktails, but, some of their delicious food! We were able to try the following: Pomegranate Lychee Belini Lychee Martini Vegetable Spring Rolls Vegetable Dumplings Damage Vegetable Maki Rolls Dragon Fire Maki Everything was fresh and delicious and a great time was had by all attendees. We can't wait to come back and try more of their menu.
We went during happy hour as a party of 4 on a thursday and had a wonderful time. Food were all great, our favorite was fire dragon maki. We were happy when we received the billl, planning to come again!
Been back here a few times now and have enjoyed it just as much every time! Ordered the Phoenix and the Vegetable Maki off the happy hour menu. The Itamae (sushi master) was very sweet & working really hard. She made the experience way better. Ambiance was great, too. Great music and cozy vibe.
Great food and service. 8 regions of Chinese cuisine. The wings to start were amazing as were the dumplings. The mains were also pretty amazing. Chinese fried rice, Cumin lamb, Ma po tofu with pork, Dover sole with broccoli and seafood combination. Everything was fresh and very flavorful. John are waiter was super helpful. Will be back.
Haven't been here in years and my first time having dim sum here! So delicious and beautifully presented! Loved the atmosphere, service and food!
You can't go wrong with this vegetarian option. I've had The Green Salad a number of times, always fresh, and even for take-out orders it is quite a large portion that could be split up for 3 persons and the price is perfect under $10. It comes with 2 small containers of ginger dressing which is a refreshing flavor apart from your traditional American salad dressings. On this take-out order I also had Miso soup and spring rolls and were a delicious combination that I highly recommend to warm you up on cold evenings. I will be coming back to try other dishes.
Delicious asian food at a great price. You get Sushi, Chinese fare from different regions in China and drink options. Pleasant, warm interiors, quick and attentive service, and an elegant vibe make this restaurant a top dining location in Evanston. Great value for your bucks. 2 appetizers and an entree (served with rice) is plenty for 2.
Yummy food we ordered dumplings sampler, Szechuan chicken and fried rice.. everything was delicious and Valentina was super cute.. Lava cake was super yumm too
nice place to have dinner with my family ! Food was delicious , server was great ! Update: visited again last night with some friends and the food and drinks were just as good as last time!
Favorite in Area! Absolutely delicious food and great service. My server Mary was very attentive and seemed to be going out of her way to ensure a fine dining experience. In the past, my family has had the dim sum brunch with some maki on the side, -- really good!! I forgot to take a picture of that meal but I'm posting a picture of my hot pepper chicken which just might be the best food I've eaten in quite a while!! Highly recommend!!! I wish that i can give more than 5 stars!!!
I came to Koi with a group of 10 Latina women, and we received the most fantastic service and food. Everything was so fresh and cooked to perfection. The drinks were just beautiful and super tasty. Our group kept ordering drinks throughout our dinner, and they were always made perfectly and brought out quickly. I highly recommend Koi for large groups, corporate events, and celebrations. I would also highly recommend this place for people of color who want excellent service in a super welcoming environment.
Great cantonese flavor! solid service..highly recommended!
Great service and amazing food all the sushi rolls were fresh and flavourful
We had the appetizer dumplings (xiao long bao), walnut shrimp, eggplant fish fillet, a wrap dish, and a spicy soup dish. All were very good, especially yhe walnut shrimp and the eggplant fish fillet! Would love to get a chance to try the other menus.
Caterpillar sushi roll is the one thing you must try here. Also the fried veggie dumplings are heavenly. Service is excellent and so is the food. Definitely check this place out!
Sushi is so delicious. Love the soup dumplings!
I’ve been going to Koi for years and it has always been a great experience. Amazing food, drinks and outstanding customer service. They have great happy hour offerings and I’ve tried plenty of their menu options and haven’t been disappointed.
Possibly the best soup dumplings ever. The flavor was amazing. Loved their almond cookies too. Everything was delicious! Tried it three days ago and decided to come back again, it was that good.
Whoa - did I just have the best General Tso’s dish I’ve ever eaten last night? Yup! Highly recommend. Staff is above and beyond.
The sushi was fresh. I tried a new item, the clay pot rice, and it is now my new favorite!
Delicious, well priced food. The atmosphere and service were top notch.
I'm sincerely thanking the kind and thoughtful staff who welcomed me for lunch yesterday. I hadn't treated myself in a while and stopped in for their lunch special right around 2:30 pm. First of all no one there rushed me even though they were set to close by 3pm. I was never pushed to make up my mind or eat hurriedly; instead I was welcomed as a true guest and my server was very attentive and patient. I knew what I wanted immediately once I saw their lunch menu options. I chose my favorite spicy Kung pao chicken 🐔 which comes with a generous mound of white rice 🍚 and an extremely delicious egg roll. Everything I ordered tasted extremely healthy, fresh and was presented beautifully. I'm a true foodie and I appreciate delicious food, generous portions and the spice level was perfect. It even cleared out my sinuses 😆 This restaurant is so 🔥 beautiful and organized in such a way you feel that calm and zen enemies circulating everywhere you gaze. In conclusion I thank everyone for welcoming me and for the incredibly delicious meal. I left nothing on my plate 😆
I dine in the other day with my family and the dim sum was on spot. So good must try
My fiancé and I had such a lovely date night here! It was very relaxed and we didn't feel rushed, which is a big thing for us. We had water on the table so we were never thirsty, which we appreciate a lot. The service was lovely and attentive both with our server and food runner, who made recommendations for us and provided a very excellent spicy mustard dipping sauce to accompany all our food, which we loved. We snagged the tail end of happy hour for some cocktails and appetizers and then ordered our main dishes. We got the Ma Po Tofu which came out nice and hot and was well spiced and the tofu was sooo silky, and the salmon poke bowl which was really yummy and satisfying. My only teeny tiny complaint is that I thought there would be a few more chunks of salmon on there for the price, but a minor detail. At the end of the meal I was full but pining for a sweet treat, and when the check came out, it was accompanied by cookies! It was just the perfect end to our meal. A very nice evening, we plan to return.
Amazing place for Asian fusion food! Great sushi, sashimi, Chinese dishes. The bar is also top notch. Friendly, attentive service. UPdate: couple visits in (more than 10!) and I can't say enough good things about Koi. Spicy tuna rolls, shrimp tempura and handcrafted drinks (lychee martini!!!) on a Friday at 3:30 pm?? Priceless!!!!
I enjoy the menu, especially happy hour, and the atmosphere and food are good, but the service is really hit or miss. Most of the time you have to flag someone down to get exactly what you need. It’s inconsistent and I wish it were better because I really do like this restaurant.
Changed my rating to from 5 to 4 stars. As a recurring customer I still love this restaurant, but I do acknowledge they have some issues. Some dishes are wonderful and some are just ok. The thing is even the best dishes are not always the same (you can come and have a very good dish, and a week after have a really different experience from the same dish). Here and there they may accidentally change your order and bring you something else, but again, it's a good restaurant with good food and excellent service - so I do recommend. Old post: Amazing food, great service, can be very noisy but good atmosphire.
Half off during happy hours for most rolls. The half of rolls on Thursdays has a giant wait list so you'd probably have to wait an hour almost to be seated because it's in a small room. Rolls are small as expected for the price for $3-5, the sushi wasn't anything spectacular but it was also priced reasonably.
Food was good I would eat again
This is a cut above other Chinese places I've been to in Evanston, even Chinatown. It's not a Chinese restaurant, but a lot of the menu has Chinese items; I'm just comparing it to Chinese places because they're usually cheap-tasting and the service is curt. Here the service is good and so is the food, of course. I was told when I picked up some orange chicken for someone (I can't really eat chicken) that it's better than the competition. The atmosphere is also comfortable, which is typical Evanston; not stuffy, but not too casual.
I had sashimi starter and California maki, my husband had yellow curry. All food was ok. The problem was that we waited for our food over 40 minutes.
Stopped by recently, and it was a pretty chill spot. Nothing super fancy or unique, but it’s a nice, easy place for locals to get sushi. They also have a Chinese food menu, which was interesting and gives some variety if you’re in the mood for something different. Our waiter was very attentive, which made the experience more enjoyable. Overall, it’s a solid, low-key spot if you’re nearby and craving sushi.
Was hoping for an authentic asian cuisine taste like what I would get in Chinatown... I got siomai, beef, chicken fried rice and vegetable roll. Nice ambiance and set up however not the intensity of flavor I'm looking for. I like the vegetable spring roll and its sweet sauce tho. :) Also, I hope they just said the real waiting time so I can do other stuff close by and just come back to pick it up. 10minute wait became 25 sitting in the car.
This is a great restaurant if you've got some extra money in your pockets and you want to explore Asian cuisine. This restaurant has an elegant atmosphere that provides a good comfortable backdrop to try new foods. They've got knowledgeable and attentive staff that have the answers to every question of the menu. However, if you're one to like saving money and getting more bang for your buck, this isn't the right place. There are a surplus of restaurants in the Chicagoland area that serve, in my opinion, much more fulfilling food for much less money.
I really liked the waiter. He was very attentive. I ordered from the happy hour menu. The spicy shrimp maki was a hoax. It was mainly avocado and I think maybe 1 single piece of shrimp was sliced up across 6 pieces. I really should have sent it back. It was clearly a cost-cutting move.
Server was very kind and attentive. Absolutely love the atmosphere. However, that food is real life nasty. I got spring rolls and crab wontons and for some reason the oil they fried them with taste like mold and a sock. They had to have fried a damn sock in there. Sushi is great though.
I had a delivery order last night for Pad Thai and crispy beef. I was disappointed to find it so tasteless. I was hoping with Peppercorns staff joining Koi that one of their staff might be cooking. I hope this message gets to the right people to make some changes. Sorry for the review, because I want all Evanston businesses to be successful.
Went in on a weekday for lunch. They have two different menus, one for Chinese cuisine and the other for Japanese cuisine. I opted for Chinese and ordered 3 dishes. The wonton in chili oil was sweet, which was not how it’s supposed to taste. The Xiao Long Bao was definitely premade or maybe from frozen. I’ve eaten a lot of Xiao Long Baos over the years, and I was really disappointed with this one. The Dandan noodle was too salty. Overall was unfortunately a disappointing experience. To me, the taste was far off from authentic Chinese. I can’t speak on the Japanese cuisine because I didn’t try any, so perhaps it might be better.
We ordered four Chinese dishes, and they were not good at all. Very bland, wrong use of spices and sauces. The environment was great, but couldn’t enjoy my food because it just wasn’t good at all. Tasted like microwave Panda Express. Would not recommend for anyone that wants actual Asian cuisine.
Food was adequate, nothing spectacular. Service needed work. We had a large group, so a 20% gratuity was automatically added. NOT happy with that. Waiter got food orders wrong, sent waitstaff to deliver food but had no idea who ordered what so it was a screaming match. Multiple times has to ask for water refills. How does a waiter let water glasses sit empty for so long. Overall, just poor service (but you still have to pay the 20% gratuity). The better question on reviews should be “ would you recommend to a friend or would you go back? The answer would be no.
Food is good but it took so long to serve the dish. We went twice. We waited 45 minutes or so both times.
What happened to this restaurant??? Koi USED to be one of my most favorite restaurants until tonight. We went there on a regular basis, had parties there, took out of town visitors there and always thoroughly enjoyed the food, service, and ambiance. The service tonight was amazing, waitress name Yu , ambiance always pleasant, but what has happened to the food?? One of the main reasons that I loved Koi was their consistency which I think is one sign of a very good restaurant. They changed their chicken wings from the largest meatiest most delicious wings anywhere to some skimpy little wings with absolutely no meat on them whatsoever and on top of that they raised all their happy hour prices a dollar. Next we always ordered the shrimp tempura maki with a very tasty sauce on top. Tonight the sauce was as almost nonexistent. Disappointment number two. When I asked to speak with the manager I was told there was none working tonight. I understand everyone is raising prices but to raise prices and reduce portion size silmutaneously feel like a rip off!! Very disappointed!!
This meal, which I had on November 15th, was absolutely horrible. The food tasted terrible, and I have serious concerns regarding food safety. It was clearly made from pre-packaged, pre-made ingredients and was not cooked fresh to order.
Got food poisoned for our wedding celebration there and no refund issued so far. Edit: RE restaurant owner: We reserved for a table of 12 people a month in advance, and 10 people showed up. Only 2 people ate the blanched broccoli we now question. One (my husband) had food poisoning symptoms after. While we'd like to believe that it was not Koi's fault, he and I shared all of our food prior to the food poisoning incident, except for the broccoli. We now ask for compensation that includes the bill we paid for the whole table, current medical expenses, and changes in our travel schedule, which already added up to more than $300, and additionally for the stress the food poisoning has caused for the entire family. We'll leave it up to the insurance company to decide whether this is fair. My husband and I went there recently to celebrate our recent wedding with some local friends, spending $240 including 20% tips (see photo attached). However, my husband got food poisoned for an entire week from their food and we had to visit the ER on New Year's Eve. Since we had to visit the hospital with out-of-network insurance coverage, it's unclear whether we'd end up with bills of hundreds of dollars. We were very careful about tracing the source of the contaminated food and waited till we got the lab results back to contact the restaurant, providing receipts, doctor's notes, and lab results as additional evidence. The restaurant so far still hasn't owned up for the contaminated broccoli they served, and told us to contact their insurance company, no refund issued to us so far. Here are more details about the food poisoning instance: we believe it was additional blanched broccoli that came with the walnut shrimp dish, not a small sprinkle of broccoli garnish. The lab results came back as Campylobacter bacteria, which come from raw vegetables and poultry and would need a large dose to cause severe food poisoning. The food poisoning symptoms typically start 1-2 days after the consumption of the contaminated food, which would make it impossible for us to directly nail down the source until we see the lab results. We were also contacted by a local health department, who asked us about all raw vegetables and poultry we recently consumed. Since only my husband had raw vegetables at Koi (I didn't eat it because of my personal preference and we shared all other food) and no poultry within the 1-2 day window, it left us no options but to believe that it was Koi, despite the great food and experience I had there a few years ago. Fortunately, no other friend at the table was affected, and I don't believe that is enough evidence to say that the food is 100% safe. Would never go again and urge cautions of all future customers.
Please be aware that this establishment engages in false advertisement and treats their customers like garbage. Though they advertise to be open till 10:30pm you will not place an order past 9:30pm—not only that, but they threw me out of the establishment while still serving other customers. If you would like to enjoy your evening, I do not recommend Koi Evanston.
Used to love this place. When we walked in today, it had a stinky smell, like the carpet hadn't been cleaned for a long time. It was lunch hour, not lots of people there. The front desk girl had a cold-stone face. We ordered two appetizers, two main courses. The food didn't taste fresh and had a fishy smell. Won't visit it again.
I used to love to go to Koi but the food quality has gone downhill The chicken wings had no meat on them & there were only 6 The shrimp tempura needed more sauce I’m sorry that the quality has gone down
Step up your game guys !! Sushi was fresh but not better than whole food’s one. You can do better with alcohol as well . Whole food - here I come - cheaper and taste the same
