At a crusty six years old, Mad Fox is a graybeard by NoVA gastropub standards, but it still delivers the goods. You could easily argue that their burger is the best in the metro area, and some of their beers such as the Kellerbier Kolsch, Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, and Orange Whip IPA are superlative for their styles. To top it all off, their facility is so expansive, and their location so conducive to events, that they pull off some of the best homegrown beer festivals as well. You could be spared for not liking English style beers, but go for the Bitterballen or Mad Brewer pizza for a true culinary treat.

I booked a reservation for my family for Mother’s Day brunch at Mad Fox. They had an excellent buffet at a great value. For $28/person they had a huge all-you-can-eat buffet with a variety of breakfast foods (French toast, eggs, meat, bagels, etc.), lunch foods (pulled pork, salad, grilled veggies, etc.), and desserts. They also offered discounted mimosas and Bloody Marys. The service was phenomenal and the food was tasty. There was also plenty of room in the brewery so that space never became cramped and awkward. I know a brewery might not seem the most likely of places to book a Mother’s Day brunch, but I highly recommend Mad Fox. Thanks for a great meal!

There are so many things we love about Mad Fox! Whether we go for drinks, dinner, or both, Mad Fox is one of our go-to restaurants. Service is always excellent whether its at the bar or a table. No matter what we're craving, there's something on the menu to please. While I do miss the homemade sausage and orecchiette pasta dish, I really enjoyed the new scallop risotto dish - I enjoyed it so much I forgot to snag a picture before eating it.

Always great service and a pleasant experience. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly and they will always accommodate guests' needs. Prices are little high but worth it for the food quality and fresh beer. Don't forget to try the frickles!

Great location and excellent quality food, but you're not going here for the food, are you? Although I'm more of a foodie than a craft drinker, one can appreciate dining in over a savory plate or drinking a choice brew with or without company. Point of advice: unless you must have beets, skip them and go for the fries instead. I tried being too healthy for my own good.

It's a nice upscale looking place. It has a large bar plus plenty of seating. They have a bunch menu where I got a BLT with an egg in it. That was a first. It was good and the service was nice. There a parking garage next to the restaurant. Street parking is dicey. They mean it when they say it's a brewery and it sorta smells like a 🍺

The food and Beer is excellent. We drive from Eldersburg to eat and get my growlers filled. Our server Suzie was great.

Really excellent beer, and absolutely the best seafood of any bar I've ever visited. The mussels, the scallops, and the salmon were superb.

This week's Epic Burger was truly epic! Pork belly on top of a Burger is excellent!

Spacious, clean and inviting atmosphere! 🍺🍔 Wonderful staff who know the menu and equally important, they know the finer points and distinction of the various delicious craft beers on tap! The menu has a wide selection of starters, salads, entrees and desserts -- something for everyone! The seating is varied so that there's an area for everyone from small groups to large groups, familes with children and or small groups. A super place to enjoy a nice meal and a delicious beer! (Wine is also available but I was completely won over by their IPA selection! 😎)

Great food; even better beer. Mad fox has a good ambiance, and also has a full-service bar for those that want drinks other than beer. Their beer selection is always great, and different every time I come. They offer good IPAs for those into bitter beers, but they have a solid selection for people who care more for lighter tastes or darker beers (like myself). To be completely honest, they are my favorite brewery in northern Virginia.

Mad Fox Brewery is an uniquely refined brew house with sophisticated decor and exquisite recipes. The beers are deep and flavorful, yet pair well any of their bar fare. The wait staff are sharp, courteous, and seem to balance being prompt and visible with letting you enjoy your meal and company in peace. While the menu items are not cheap, they are definitely priced appropriately to the quality of preparation and service. I had the Mad Fox Burger, with the bacon jam. The burger was cooked to my requested temperature, the vegetable toppings were fresh, and the mac and cheese was creamy and light. I ordered two Broad St. IPAs, which were both poured with the right amount of head. I would highly recommend Mad Fox Brewery for a small reunion with friends, a causal date, or just a short stop for happy hour.

The beer is good, but the food is really great. The black bean burgers is the best IveI ever had. At our table, the goat cheese salad was amazing, and the snitzel was good too. Even the brussel sprouts were good, and I don't even like brussel sprouts. Service was good too, but we did visit at 3pm on a Sunday so it wasn't packed. I'd come back if I was in the area for sure.

After a long day of playing tourist around the city we were looking for a late night bite to eat. This place hit the spot. The food came fast, and with good portion sizes. The prices were reasonable for what we got. We also tried a flight of four house brews. All were wonderful. Overall awesome experience, would definitely return and will recommend.

I recently had lunch here, and loved the meatloaf sammy. A friend offered to take me here for my birthday, at dinnertime. I emailed Mad Fox to inquire if the sandwich was on their dinner menu, and said I was coming for my birthday. They emailed back to say I should mention to the server and they would make the sandwich for me though it wasn't on the dinner menu! Not only that, my dessert was free and came with a lit candle. Very impressed with customer service, to say the least.

D
David Hultman

I may not like every beer I have ordered but I have not disliked a single one. Nearly every brew that is crafted at Mad Fox is fantastic and those that are not are still really good. The food is above average for a place that specializes in Beer. The service I have received on every visit has been great, sometimes a touch slow but really who wants to be rushed when so many good beers are to be had amongst friends!

Z
Zachary Leuschner

After two visits, this place is a solid four for two reasons--menu diversity and beer selection. Nothing stellar, nothing awful. Everything they do is decent, but I can't rave about anything. Pizza and a beer is always a good option, and they do that well. I'd recommend that over the burger and salad we had on our second visit. If you live close, definitely check out the daily specials. That would probably raise it to a five experience and value. Solid place for groups, parking in the garage is free, and courteous staff get you in and out in your pace. Recommended!

B

Good food and a nice beer selection. Even some cask style ales here. If you can't decide, get a flight for about the same price as any of the regular beers. Really enjoyed the pizzas.

M

Great atmosphere, great beer and pretty good food. My experience with microbreweries has been great beer and okay food. Mad Fox is an exception. The food is great - seriously, try the mac n' cheese. The only reason I haven't given them 5 stars is that they are often out of certain beers that I like and the service is sometimes slow.

C
Corey Roth

I stopped in here for lunch and sat at the bar. The bar staff was friendly and helpful. I did a flight and enjoyed the beers. For lunch I had a pizza on gluten free crust. Their gluten free crust isn’t bad. Not the best I have ever had but I am glad they had it as an option.

A neighborhood pub in Falls Church crafting their own unique assortment of beers. Depending on what holiday is upcoming there are usually events taking place here so it's always a good time. The food is pretty heavy even for a bar but it does go down well. The brunches can be quite packed and exciting too. One of their best weekly deals is the Sunday flight for only $5. A laid-back atmosphere will welcome you here, for the singleton at the bar to the hooping and hollaring family.

The food and service is just amazing. The atmosphere is great! I ordered their burgers and it was quite good. Not the best thing ever, but at the time it was very good. The waiter we had, Nathan, was very friendly and very informative.

Fun little English style pub. The beer is good and the food is tasty. I really like the Bleu Cheese Burger and brunch here is really good. It's a good place in the winter time since it feels cozy and warm.

Ate at the bar during happy hour. Good tap list with a few beers on cask. All good quality brews from what I tried. I ordered the fresh pork rinds, amazing. The come out still popping. The burger was well cooked and flavorful. The side salad with it was huge. Service was decent. Bartender seemed a bit distant for being before 5 and about 6 people at a really long bar. Didn't offer water. Come on, I just drank a few beers and a bunch of food, could have at least offered water. Parking is confusing. I parked on the street a block over but I think there's a garage.

This place is great. The food is pretty good, the beers are excellent, and the service is incredible. I wouldn't rate the indoor atmosphere that high, as it's kind of plain, but the extensive patio is amazing. Even better, you can bring your well behaved dog with you and they will treat him or her like a guest. A waitress immediately went and filled up my dog's bowl with ice and water when we arrived. Oh, and the prices are great during happy hour. I'll be coming back.

I was here for happy hour and trivia. Our waiter was very slow and would only take one person's order each time he came by our table. It took an hour to get some people in my group their drinks, and by that time happy hour was over. Very frustrating. At the end of the night he messed up our bill too.

M

Come here for tasty appetizers and beer. They have great happy hour options and a good variety of beer options.

The establishment looks very nice inside. Evrything was very clean. I liked the views. The beers were ok. I sampled 4 in a flight and all were ok. I wasn't disappointed in any, however, I wasn't impressed either. The smoked salmon was too much per cracker. Cut the amount in half and double the crackers and you have a winner. The braided pretzel was solid.

Went to Mad Fox with a few coworkers for a going away dinner on Friday. The place was PACKED which usually is a good sign. The atmosphere was nice but it got very loud. Personally, the beer was ok but not great and I would say the same about the food. Some say "but it's a brewery, you're not there for the food". That's fair and if you're a fan of Mad Box brews and just go for that than you'll be satisfied. However, with so many new brew pubs opening many of them have upped their food game. Sometimes the food is even better than the beer. Overall, it was nice but I think our company is what made the night.

Great beer, ok food, somewhat bad service. We come back for the brews with family band and friends throughout the year. Appetizers are good but most are too greasy. Entrees have some good options beer brined chicken and the meatloaf were great. Good Pizza options too. Service over the years has been hit or miss and this most recent visit was quite poor, though not quite bad enough that we won't be back. We had to grab utincils off other tables, waiter forgot things, then seemed like our waiter and some of the other waiters and waitresses would rather sit back near the kitchen on their phones then provide good service. I eat a lot of meals out and service here is prob the worst I've seen in the area. I'd recommend management put more energy into monitoring and training the staff.

R
Richard Yhip

The place feels very comfortable when you go inside. There's lots of wood and the dim (but not dark) lighting makes it feel like you're at an old friend's house. I had the Orange Whip IPA and felt it had a good balance between a fruity taste and being hoppy. For an appetizer we got the Frickles which were fried but not greasy or oily and had a bit of spice to it. The beer selection was good. We all ordered burgers and were all pretty indifferent about them. They all looked kind of flat and the presentation was very average. I ordered the Mad Fox Burger an it seemed like any other burger I could get from a fast-food restaurant but thicker. I couldn't really detect all of the ingredients and sauces on the burger. I can't recommend this place yet. I will have to go back and try the wings and pizza. Another table got those and they looked appealing.

E
Erik

Overpriced. They have a great atmosphere, their house beers are well priced, but the food is too expensive and their happy hours are fake. Epic Burger release Wednesday is such a joke! They put out a random burger and charge $16 for it. That’s not a happy hour special. Last time we went we had the buffalo chicken pizza. They chicken and celery tasted old.

Being a beer enthusiast, I was very tempted by this place. There is ample seating and a good selection of beers. While the food and beer were good, there was nothing there to write home about. Generic foods with a bit of flair. Of all the brews I tasted, most seemed flat on the palette and didn't entice me to drink more. The one brew I found exciting to the senses was the SlobberKnocker...crisp with a great finish. With all this said, I'm going to stick to the tried and true Dogfish Head restaurants...awesome taste and awesome, unique, food. Food was good, beer not so good.

D
David Mayers

Very bad service. Food was pretty good and drinks were decent, but way more expensive than other places in the area that are comparable in quality. And for a brewing company, the beer selection is fairly limited. I was also disappointed to find disagreements between the online menu and the actual menu. I was not able to have the drink that i was hoping to order, and the replacement drink, a cider, was not discounted during happy hour as implied by the online menu. I don't plan on returning since there are so many other restaurants in the area that will provide better value.

Service was just ok. Waitress was sweet but almost never offered to take away our dirty appetizer or dinner plates. Restaurant was out of a couple of beers, at least 2 desserts and no Chivas Regal? Not sure if they were out or just didn’t carry it? We were a group of 10 seated way in the back. Felt kind of forgotten sometimes. Food was good. Beer was great. Asked about a t-shirt on the way out. Hostess didn’t know... wanted me to ask the bartender. Umm, no, that’s okay.

I went here for the first time last Friday. We were able to get a seat right away, which is pretty great for a weekend night. My boyfriend and I both had the 4 flights tasting to try out all the beers. The pizza was pretty generic and my salad was average. Certainly fine food, but nothing special by any means. The Black Saison beer was disgusting to the point when another diner sitting across from us stopped us mid-order to tell us to pick another. It tasted like Jager mixed with cherry cough syrup. But the Funk and the Kolsch were awesome, they really excel at light beers. I'd probably go back if I was in the mood for plain old bar food or wanted to grab a beer and watch a game.

Have been here 3 times. Service has been an issue every time. My most recent trip the waiter put in the wrong order for me. I asked for the Bacon Jam burger done medium with onion rings. I got a regular burger, well done though it was barely room temperature to touch, and french fries. I pointed out the error & they brought my correct burger, but it was way overcooked & tasted awful. I choked down a couple bites. The oniopn rings were bad too- couldn't even taste any onion. Go for the beer & the fried pickles at the bar & save yourself the disappointment in the dining room.

If you are coming for beer and appetizers/pizza, you cant go wrong. Great beer selection. Big bar area for larger parties. If you are coming for the restaurant, look elsewhere. The food is average, but very pricey. You'll find something you like, but there are plenty of options that are better and cheaper in a 3 block radius around MadFox

S
Shaun Dakin

Mad Fox is "mad" on the usual nights (Friday, Saturday) for the single crowd who love the beer and the bar. My family however, goes when there are few singles and more family members. That tends to be Sunday Brunch which is very good. Lunch is great as well. The Burger is one of the best.

B

Went with a freind around 5:30PM on a Friday, only a few other people at the place. The server was great and very attentive at first. However, the more people who came they less we saw her. By the time we wanted the check it took an additional 15mins to even spot the waitress! The pizza we had (the Mob) was alright. Not too thrilled with service here though.

I

Out of the IPAs I wanted to try. Same as two years ago when I tried the place. The two sandwiches we had were completely tasteless. Two of the beers I tried were pretty good. I like food with flavors. 7-11 might have a better chicken salad sandwich. 2 and a half stars. Boring. Do better.

J

Good food. Nice staff. Slacker service. I usually avoid Mad Fox due to the poor service I've experienced on several occasions but the food & beer are good so It's always a gamble if I'm going to leave happy or disappointed. The last time I went for dinner with a group of about 12 friends the server dropped off one check at the end of the night. Since he hadn't bothered to keep track of who had ordered what it took him 30 minutes and several failed attempts to split the check. I few days later I noticed I had been charged almost $60 more than I had signed for on the receipt. I went back and spoke to a manager and after finding my receipt and verifying that I had been overcharged he assured me it would be taken care of. A week after that, the charges still hadn't been reversed so I went back a second time and spoke to the same manager who went in the back to supposedly fix the charges himself. A brief "sorry about that" was all I got in way of an apology and I'm still waiting to see if the charges will be reversed. I really wish I could justify going back this isn't the first time I've left frustrated and I'd like to save myself the aggravation. I won't be returning if I can help it.

Excellent beer and good food. I had their orange IPA, which was very refreshing on a summer night. The service was fast and friendly. My friend and I sat outside, they have a nice outdoor area. For an appetizer we ordered fried pickles, which was a large portion. I chose the turkey burgers or my main course and it was very average. I will defiantly come back to try more beer and a more adventurous entry for myself.

K
Kristina Phillips

Big place with lots of seats, a long bar, and a decent selection of beer. Food is incredibly inconsistent. Every time we decide - after months, that we want to give them another chance we’re regretful. Tonight we ordered two burgers medium rare. They took a long time to come out, one was well done, the other was cooked appropriately on the inside but somehow very burned on the outside, and the fries were over done. We’ve tried half the menu or more... definitely the last trip for us.

R
Robert Bratton

I've been going to Mad Fox semi-regularly for the past four years and I struggle as to how to rate and review them. The beers are always good, but the food and service are maddeningly inconsistent. There seems to be a lot of turnover here, so I wonder if the pay is low. I compare this to another local place (Pizzeria Orso) which has many of the same staff now that they had four years ago. Sometimes the food and service and excellent but sometimes they are not. They are good more often than not, but I just wish they could be more consistent -- especially when it comes to service. The burger is great, but I find the bacon jam rather strong, so I ask for that on the side. The fish and chips and steak frites are usually very good, and for pizza, I usually get the garlic pig. Among the beers, the orange whip IPA is a favorite, and I also like the Defender IPA. Their pizzas and sandwiches have gluten free options.

C
Chad David

Food was pretty good, beer was average compared to other breweries. The big issue was our server came to our table to tell us he'd be with us in a second then proceeded to go to the table behind us and wait on them even though they were seated after us. And the table changes their order at least once while he was taking it which delayed us even more. All in all it was a decent place but wouldn't go out of my way to go there again.

I
Impexium Documentation

The place itself has a cool look and vibe, but the food was extremely disappointing. I had a spinach and beet salad: the spinach was greasy and really salty, and the beets were canned or pickled. There was also some kind of squash in there as well. What could have been a pretty nice, basic salad was inedible, and I ended up eating what walnuts and blueberries there were. A friend ordered a turkey burger which looked tasty at first, but he described it as tasting like it was spoiled and he had to send it back. Pretzel appetizer was also disappointing and did not have the pretzel texture or flavor...at best it was like a basic bread. The service was mediocre--waiter took ages to get back to us, and he did not seem to have any process for keeping everyone's orders organized

S
Samantha Siegmann

I was not impressed by this restaurant. I don't drink beer so I can't testify on that but the food and the service were poor. From the beginning our waiter was cold and inattentive. He would walk past our table without a word. When I would get his attention for something, I felt like I was annoying him. Service was also slow. It took about 20 minutes for our appetizers to come out. Then two minutes after our appetizers arrived, our entrees were served. This is a pet peeve of mine at restaurants. I would like some time to enjoy and finish my appetizer before my main meal is brought. The food was mediocre at best. We had the spinach and artichoke dip, which normally I love but this dip was basically goat cheese with a bit of spinach thrown in. I ordered the mad fox burger. It was cooked as I asked for but it was just bland. The roll was supposed to be brioche but it just tasted like a regular bun and the garlic sauce tasted like plain mayo. I could go to Chilis or TGIF and get a way better burger for a better price. The only reason this place gets two stars is because of the desert. We had the fried nutella/banana cheesecake and it was delicious (although I didn't taste any nutella). Overall, there are definitely better brewery/tavern type restaurants in this area and I would not come back here.

So incredibly disappointed tonight. We live in Falls Church and have been going to mad fox since it opened and taking our daughter there since she was born for a nice family-friendly meal. We love the beer and want to support a local restaurant, but after this trip, we won't be back. Got there, put in an order right away for beer and for our child. Asked for a water and asked if the waiter could come back in a minute to take our order. 10+ minutes later, with no water and no one having taken our order, we had to ask the bartender to find our waiter. His excuse? "Oh, I was helping refill the ice machine." Food was awful. My daughter's burger was charred to a crisp. My wife's chicken salad was inedible. My black bean burger tasted okay, but I had to eat it with a fork because it wasn't even close to a solid patty. It was like someone had slapped wet refried beans on a bun. At least the beer was good, as always. Our waiter? Nice enough guy, but I don't think he'd ever waited tables before. He never checked on us. Two other wait staff eventually took the initiative to come over to check on us, so we ordered a beer from one of them. When he did come back and ask about a beer, we told him that we'd already ordered it. He just looked annoyed and said, "Oh, I was in the restroom." For 25 minutes?!? We've both worked in service fields. We're not picky at all, and we're really understanding when places have minor issues. But there was just no excuse for how bad this experience was. The place wasn't even busy. There were at least 5-6 staff standing around doing nothing. One of them was drinking a beer. The owner should probably think about finding a new manager for this place.

D
David Donovan

Awful. I get that they have announced they are going out of business in a few weeks, but on a typical mid-week evening it took 15 minutes to order (after having to ask for a waiter), 15 more minutes to get a beer (at a brew pub, no less), 25 more minutes to get the first of 3 entrees, with the other 2 showing up almost 15 minutes later, and then for the finishing touch I had to beg to get a check. The beer was fine. The food was mediocre at best -- we have been here before and my son wanted to come back one more time for the steak frites, which even he could not eat. The meat loaf reminded me of a cafeteria. Indifferent, slow and mediocre would describe the experience. Obviously we won't be back (and neither will they). Save your money and go somewhere that at least pretends to give a damn. Service here has always been mediocre, but this takes the cake.
