Opinions de San Felix Girona
Girona, Spain, I was completely captivated by its medieval charm. Wandering through the old town… narrow stone alleyways, ancient archways, and The Girona Cathedral was especially breathtaking. It’s grand staircase and imposing façade are stunning in person. This I recall from GOT. As a fan of Game of Thrones, exploring the old town was cool. Many parts of the medieval center and the cathedral steps were filming locations. Girona’s medieval center offers the perfect blend of history, atmosphere, and fantasy. A must-visit for anyone who loves architecture, culture, or Game of Thrones
Visiting the Basilica of Sant Feliu was one of my favorite moments in Girona. It sits just below the cathedral, but in many ways it feels even more ancient and authentic. Knowing that the first church here was built in the 4th century, over the tomb of Saint Feliu, makes the place feel truly special. You can see the layers of history in every stone. The mix of styles is beautiful: the solid Romanesque base, elegant Gothic arches, and touches of Baroque detail show how the church evolved over hundreds of years. The bell tower is stunning up close — slender and graceful, rising high above the old town. Inside basilica is very calm. I loved the collection of Roman and early Christian sarcophagi, carved with such detail that they almost feel alive. The main altar, where the relics of Saint Feliu rest, has a quiet, sacred atmosphere that’s easy to feel even if you’re not religious. It’s a place that combines history, beauty, and peace in a very natural way. Tickets cost only €12 and includes entrance to nearby cathedral and art museum. Audio guides available if you want to know the place better and more detailed.
The Basílica de Sant Feliu is a wonderful addition to the Girona Cathedral, and when combined with the charming old city, they form a beautiful Girona panorama. With its picturesque setting among narrow, shady streets, charming cafes, and shops, it offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a lovely time in Girona.
Interior is not interesting, but free to enter The Basilica of Sant Feliu was the main church of Girona before the construction of the cathedral. The building is 14th century Gothic with a Baroque façade. Its bell tower is a prominent landmark of the city. On the other side of the façade, a twin bell tower was begun but remains unfinished.
The basilica is a stunning Gothic-style building constructed in the 14th century using ashlar and masonry. The facade and steps, however, are Baroque. Although it may not be as grand as the Girona Cathedral, it is still definitely worth a visit. Additionally, admission to both of these churches is free on Sundays, just thought it would be good to know!
If you purchased the 3 in 1 ticket including the cathedral, this is another site you will visit. It is not as grand as the cathedral, but nonetheless worth visiting. The entrance is a bit tricky to find. If you use Google map to search for this place, it will take you to a good place to take photo of it, but it isn't the entrance. You will need to continue to walk to the right of the building, then you will see a slope up to the building. Make sure you get the audio guide so that you get all the detail information.
This church is just opposite the bridge of Saint Felix, on the eastern bank of the River Onyar. It seemed a little odd that a basilica is smaller than the cathedral until I found out that historically this church housed the Diocese of Girona and therefore the main church in Girona until the construction of the cathedral. Much like the cathedral, it’s a lovely mix of Romanesque, Gothic and with a Baroque facade. Not quite a beautiful as Girona Cathedral, this church does have a few interesting points such as the 4th century sarcophaguses, an interesting alter with a statue of Saint Felix (I think), and the tomb of Narcissus of Girona who was one of the early bishops of Girona. Keep in mind that you can buy a combined ticket for this basilica and Girona Cathedral, also known as the Church of St. Mary. Although the cathedral is more opulent than the basilica, I actually found the narrative of the audio guide for the basilica far superior. Do not miss the Chapel of Saint Narcissus, which I though was far more beautiful than any of the chapels in the church for it's stunning jasper walls.
This imposing basilica church equals the nearby city cathedral in beauty and importance. Located in a picturesque medieval part of the city, this church is Gothic in style with a baroque facade, full of statues in niches. The church is older than the cathedral and has also a slender bell tower and stairs leading up to its main entrance.
The Basílica de Sant Feliu in Girona is what happens when centuries of devotion meet slightly eccentric medieval architecture. With its soaring spires, weathered stone, and interior that smells faintly of incense and history, it’s the kind of church that feels alive even when empty, as if the saints themselves are judging your choice of footwear. Dating back to the 4th century in origin, though largely rebuilt in Gothic style over the centuries, it houses tombs of notable locals, intricate altarpieces, and the ever, impressive twisted columns that somehow survived every renovation and minor earthquake that came along. Every corner whispers stories of priests, pilgrims, and occasional tourists attempting to look reverent while sneaking a selfie. Not flashy like a cathedral in Milan, not overcrowded like a Barcelona hotspot, and definitely not silent, the occasional footstep echoes, tourists murmur, and bells chime somewhere in the distance. But if you enjoy history, gothic quirks, and the quiet weight of centuries pressing gently on your shoulders, Basílica de Sant Feliu delivers in a quietly imposing way. A place where architecture, faith, and time collide, reminding visitors that medieval Girona still knows how to command attention without demanding it.
Beautiful basilica of Girona! Together with the cathedral, they dominate the skyline of Girona. Walk around the basilica where the Jewish quarter is located or go up to the hill where the old City Hall is and catch a glimpse of the basilica against the city as backdrop. You can also see the top of the basilica along the river.
