Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe: one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, built to honor the Virgin Mary’s apparition to Juan Diego in 1531. Inside, pilgrims come to see the famous tilma bearing her image, displayed above the altar. In front of it stretches the Plaza de las Américas, a vast open square where millions gather each year—especially on December 12—for prayer, celebrations, and processions. The space feels both monumental and deeply human: a sea of devotion framed by churches, vendors, and constant movement.
Visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe was a deeply moving experience. Seeing the original image of Our Lady in person was overwhelming in the best way — something photos or videos simply cannot capture. The atmosphere is respectful and powerful, and you can truly feel the historical and spiritual significance of the place. Even if you are not religious, it is hard not to be impressed by the devotion, the architecture, and the sense of history here. Absolutely worth the visit.
What an epic experience! You don’t have to be religious to feel the energy and reverence. This is a spectacular site with multiple cathedrals to visit and see. It’s basically the Mecca of Mexico. It’s beautiful that ALL are welcome, none is banned due to their religion, affiliation, or any other trait. Now on to tactical stuff… do not go in a weekend. We went on a Sunday and it was jam-packed as you can see from my video and photos. Go during week so it’s less overwhelming. We took an uber to get there so we didn’t have to deal with the crazy traffic or parking. Because it was packed and live mass that was being held we were not able to enter the large cathedral. We stood at the large open doors to listen in. It was meaningful to be present at such a moment - feeling prayers and wishes of people floating and offered. Then we headed on a hike up the stairs and mini mountain to see the original cathedral. This is not for the faint hearted and not to be done in high-heat. Was well worth it to get up there and see it but was not easy - which is ok, it’s part of pilgrimage experience. The view from there is also very majestic. On the premises of this huge area, there are also the 12 stations of the cross depicted. Near that area there is an area for souvenirs and bathrooms. To enter the area we didn’t need a ticket but you may need a ticket for the main cathedral. There were lines on one door and people exiting through the other door. No matter what you do and how you navigate this - enjoy it, the humanity is in display, faith is in focus, but all in such welcoming way. Goes without saying but be conscious about this is an active site of worship for some. Go and enjoy this one of a kind experience - and may your wishes and prayers be granted!
Went just to see the basilica. It surprise me how big this thing is. It holds mass every hour and turns out ppl come from everywhere here to do pilgrimage. Its amazing to see how strong the faith they have here. It has a nice view from the hill and so many souvenir shops around the basilica as well.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe isn’t just a church. It’s practically a little village of unique and beautiful spaces that leave an impression on everyone, whether you believe or not. There’s a powerful energy here, carried by the thousands of people who come with deep faith in Guadalupe and what she represents for her people. You’ll see visitors from all over the world praying, walking on their knees, or simply standing in awe as they pass underneath her image. Even if you’re not religious, it’s impossible not to feel something. I highly recommend looking into the history of her image — the cloth that holds it should have deteriorated centuries ago, yet it remains intact. People pilgrimage from every corner of the world to see her, to thank her, and to ask for something special. Whether you come out of devotion, curiosity, or just respect for the culture, the Basilica will leave you with a feeling you won’t forget.
Beautiful place with a calming energy. However, had I known about the beautiful stray dogs and cats that live there I would have brought food and water. You can purchase water there but please bring kibble and a plate. The Basilica should have a donation box that goes directly to them.
The Basilica of Guadalupe was on our minds to visit as we were traveling through Mexico. We attended the mass but was in Spanish but was still an experience. The other churches are all in the same vicinity. Very peaceful, friendly people everywhere. The church on the top is not an easy walk but the church is beautiful and the view is amazing.
A must visit We spent many hours praying, attending mass. For the first timers do plan for to spend at least 5 hours. There are many chapels in addition to the basilica. Museum dedicated to our lady has many artifacts and it’s only 10 pesos to enter. Pray, reflect and receive blessings from our Mother
