El Charro is a popular spot known for its delicious, generously portioned Mexican food and beautifully decorated interior. Service can be inconsistent, and the restaurant can be loud with live music. Some find it more authentic than typical Tex-Mex.

Opinions de El Charro Hillsboro
Absolutely wonderful. Their salsa is spicy but good, you just have to like the heat. My flour tortillas were freshly made, and I have more than enough left over for another meal. The service is also great.
I have eaten here 4 times with my granddaughter. The atmosphere is great. Staff is friendly but I request the same server, Jessica. They get the food out quick with a smile. table maintenance is a must for me, I get that with good food served here. I highly recommend this place with avg prices. Me & my family will be back
My dad and I stopped in for a quick lunch. The hostes greeted us right away with a smile. The salsa and guacamole were excellent. Very fresh. We also ordered combo nachos with shredded chicken and ground beef. This is my dad and my go to for an easy lunch and they were some of the best we ever had! Litzy our server was super sweet and very attentive. Great job all around!
OH MY GOODNESS!!! The mini taco plate was beyond amazing!!! The homemade refried beans and guacamole were mouthwatering. The char on the chicken & beef was amazing. We were a party of ten and so there was quite the variation of meals and not one was disappointing. HIGHLY recommend this place if you’re going through. It’s right off the freeway. Very reasonable prices.
We were heading back to San Antonio from Dallas and stopped to get lunch and use the restroom. We chose El Charro because it was in a convenient location and we are always in the mood for Mexican food. We are kind of critical of Mexican food because we have had very good and authentic meals from California and Texas. El Charro did not disappoint. Our service was excellent and the food was delicious. Th atmosphere was perfect with decor and music. Our server Gael performed well and made us feel at home. We ordered quesa birria, birria pizza, and chile relleno with chicken. Get the green salsa!! Bathrooms were clean and in order. When we left we jumped right back on the hwy very conveniently. I think you should skip Buc-cees and treat yourself with a delicious meal from El Charro Mexican Bar and Grill.
Passing thru Sunday afternoon when we found this gem of a restaurant. The food was so yummy. Full of flavors. The portions were huge. The staff very attentive of your needs! I give it a 5 star because it was full of flavorsome food! One thing missing was the home made flour tortillas but even with that missing, I would still say it's a 5 star review. Thank you for the awesome food.
Good food, fair prices. Wide menu.
Best beef enchiladas ever. The rice was also great. Salsa and chips were great. I will be back!!
I have a picky teenager who LOVED this place! My husband and I also loved it! Our server was great too! I don’t remember his name but he was a tall young man and always made sure we had everything we needed! I 100% recommend this place! We are planning on driving the hour it takes us from our house in the future!
It was really good. Hardly any wait. Fast service. Hot delicious food. Very good.
Hadn't been back to this place in over a year due to not such great quality. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed! They've added to the menu & have an excellent wait staff now. The food was top notch & our waiter, VanJa was super attentive. After speaking with Jessica, we will be back soon!
Nice family restaurant. The food was good and we didn’t have to wait long to eat. The server was nice. They also have a bar if you don’t want to sit at a table.
The best Mexican food I've had in Hill or Navarro county by far. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.
My dad and I are new to the area and we've been looking for places to go eat other than fast food. We've recently decided to check out El charro. We love this place they have good prices, great food and good service. El charro is our new favorite place to go eat
We had an out of town group of 14 for dinner. They weren't too busy at the time. Service was great. Staff professional and pleasant. The food was wonderful. The kitchen was putting out great comfort food. Everything looked great. The taste was fresh, and the seasoning levels of each dish were perfect for what each person wanted. Will definitely have this place on our map for future visits.
Perhaps the best tortilla soup I have ever had. I ordered a small and it was HUGE! Mini tacos were good as well. Service was quick and attentive. If you are passing through Hillsboro, eat here. You will be happy. Edit: went back today. Just had to have the soup two days in a row 😂
The food was expensive. More expensive than the area justifies. But food is going up everywhere. The food was good but not unique. The guacamole was liquid and extremely hot. The salsa reminded me of something from a can, but otherwise tasted good. The chips were plain. The enchiladas were good, but there was no sauce in the chicken, and the cheese sauce on top tasted like it was from a can. My wife's fajitas were not sizzling. Her tortillas were steamed, not seared, which was a disappointment for her. My wife's margarita was from a mix and was way too sweet, she said. All told it was an expensive but average experience. We will go back but only with the reminder of the $85 cost for two people. Including the tip because the waitress was nice and clearly from south of the border.
Morning time: had the carné asada plate. The fajita was very juicy and tender, and tasted well with the cactus. the rice had good taste and something I haven’t find often, it had great texture; just the right hardness, not to crunchy or to pudding like. The salsa were tasty, and overall, the refried beans with a hint of pork crackling taste were my favorite.
I door dash here and the staff are friendly and efficient!! The food is awesome as well! Best Mexican food in Hillsboro
We've been here several times and its always delicious! Plan on going back many more times too! Their mini tacos are my favorite! And the salsa Verde is the absolute best!!!!
Our RV rally group of 15 had dinner there one evening. The restaurant is clean and the service was great. The food was delicious and even though we were a large group there wasn’t a long wait time.
Had the tripe street tacos. Loved them. Tripe was clean and grilled till it was crispy. The charro beans were really good, too. Service was good, made a couple of small mistakes but they were promptly corrected. We were in a group of nine so no biggie. Will be back.
I dropped in here and noticed it was packed nearly full. Despite the crowd, our server got to us quickly, was attentive with our order and our drinks. I ordered the mixed fajitas and my companion ordered the soft tacos. The food came out quickly and was nice and hot. I noticed a drinks menu and may come back to try a few of them on a day when I'm not driving.
First time eating here, and the service was fast and friendly. Food came out quick and everything we ordered was delicious. Portion was huge for the price. Every plate we ordered was amazing and surprisingly a lot for the price. Definitely recommend this place and will always come back. Our new favorite restaurant to go to.
Delicious food. Not in love with the salsa. Its too spicy. But my taco was great, my cheese enchiladas had the really good gooey cheese. The beans were also very good. But what I really love is the decor! The chairs have been beautifully decorated. I couldnt get over it. I didnt take pics of my food, although it was appetizing and reasonably priced. I did take a few pics of the chairs. I'll be back. I've already told some friends about it.
We went for Mother's day and everything tasted good, I didn't hear any complaints from any family members, other than the fact that it took a long time to bring out the food, and our waiter wasn't very attentive, we had to literally hunt him down or ask another waiter to tell him to come to our table. I give it 4 stars since everything else was good, the waiter wasn't rude but definitely could have been better.
The food, is excellent no complain, the service wasn't good or favorable. The waitress never show up during the whole time of my meal, i order tortillas half and half. I got three corn and 1 flour. And this was going to be for 2 parrilladas. WOW I should got my order and my friend should receive his order. Especially when I am paying almost 20 dollars for my meal. I have to wait for everything. Most of the time I have to requested to someone else. I was almost ready to go and personally complain to the manager.
The food was good except the charro beans were kinda bland. I had a texmex dish, and the enchilada sauce was tasty. We asked for a spicier salsa, and they provided a tasty warm salsa. My hubby got the steak and napalitos, and he enjoyed it. As for the service, she was kinda slow and not readily available. I chalked that up to being in a small town where Noone is ever in a hurry. Would we return??? Yes
We were traveling to meet friends and El Charro was our meeting point. I was pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh, nice flavors. They had a fajita lunch special for $10- chicken or steak. I took home leftovers! Our server was gracious and attentive. I would drive there to eat again!
An out of town friend invited me to join her at a restaurant I'd been to in the past, but not recently. The waitress was nice. My favorite item at any restaurant is pork chops. They didn't have a good flavor.
Drive thru Mexican need i say more needed a food break cimong from dallas to san antonio got tired of fast food tacos it was very nice guy at Window
Food was good. Had the La Botana. Service was good at first. Got our drinks. Then had to flag someone down. It was the hostess. The waitresses were just wondering around. Did not have assigned sections.
This is the go-to Mexican restaurant in town for my husband and I. We love that this place offers online ordering, which we utilize frequently. It’s super convenient to swing through the drive-thru and pick up our food. I didn’t give 5 stars because the last few times that we’ve ordered from here, we are always missing something. Most recently, we didn’t get our beans that came with our meals or our beverage. The food is pretty good and fairly consistent, which is nice.
The food and service was good. The resteraurant was clean. One of the party didn't like what they ordered they replaced with a new dish at no extra charge
Good food with a great atmosphere. My steak was overcooked but still had good flavor, everything else was perfect.
Great Mexican selection. Not like your normal Tex Mex. Great atmosphere and service with a smile. Server was very polite and attentive. Good value to size portion. Highly recommend.
It looks better than it tastes. Fortunately, I like it when a restaurant tries to have a decent presentation. However, a $15 burrito (Burrito El Charro) should offer more than what was delivered. On the bright side, the chips and salsa are very good. Not sure if it was enough to get me to come back, but maybe.
Wow. Beautiful restaurant, great atmosphere, very very good prices, I honestly thought I was gonna pay 5 dllrs more for that plate. Service was OK.., I ran out if tea, sssoooooo, I asked for some more, cause I really want to come back here. More than well proportioned. Very good flavor too. Thank you guys!!!!!
Good place to stop in go a decent meal. Apparently a popular spot amongst locals and travelers alike. The frozen margarita actually was pretty boozy, I'm impressed! Guacamole live is very tasty and plentiful. Nice atmosphere but service a lil slow as it was kinda busy. Reminds me of truck stop prices tho...
Food came out cold. One order was for 2 items only off of a meal. They could not comprehend to only bring the 2 items. Brought a completely different entre. Cold. Did not eat. Never questioned why it was not being consumed. Would not recommend. Was not busy so could not be the reason.
The tacos were very greasy. But not bad. I was very hungry so I did eat them all. They didn't have to change for a 10.00 and even didn't give us .7 cents change back. Then I went to the restroom...I saw a few baby cock roaches...so that means there are more. Sorry, I don't really recommend this place.
Crazy expensive for average Tex-mex. $55+$15)tip) enchilada plate, street taco plate & 2 draft beers each that apparently was supposed to be happy hour…I’d hate to see fill price beers
We had a large group, food was cold, took a very long time, prices were very high. Cocktails were decent. The 16 dollar guacamole with chicharrone was terrible, bland and hard.
Food was okay, nothing special. What bothered me was the à la carte tactic of upcharging to run up your bill. They provide only two tortillas with the chicken fajitas. When you need more, which I don’t know anyone who can eat a normal-sized order of fajitas with only two tortillas, they charge $2.50 even if you only need one extra. They should include three, which is usually the customary amount at any place I’ve ever been to. The sour cream was $3.50. Granted, it was a large portion, but goodness gracious, $27 and change before tip for just one person to eat average fajitas is a bit much. They even charge extra if you pay with a card. I think it was 72 cents. I mean, seriously, what is this? The girl who waited on me did her job, but she was in no way warm or welcoming. My opinion is to skip this place. I’m sure much better options are out there.
If you're looking for pretty good tex-mex you'll probably like this one. Nothing that just how'd me. Service was really good. Place was clean and there was alot of options on the menu. With all the Mexican restaurants in town, it'd be hard to have one that's just phenomenal so I guess given the circumstances its ok. Just not one of those HOLY MOLY kinda places. Not bad, just not great. And on a different note... they have a drive thru. Not sure what to think about that with so many items on the menu. Nothing really stood out to me here, it was just an ok place to me.
Check before being seated if they plan on live DJ music. It's way too loud in a small enclosed space. The chips are thick and the hot sauce is ok. Food was presented well but lacked good expected taste for the price you will pay. I will say they make a really good beef taco that the shell is home made and very crunchy. My favorite of the meal.
Got tacos and they were incredibly bland and lacked flavor. The hamburger meat had little to no seasoning and the Carne gusada tasted nasty. I never throw food away but I ended up just throwing away half of the Carne gusada taco I didn't eat and the other one away. Everything is over priced too. I feel like I made more for less because nothing was seasoned right.
You know, for a restaurant that is just off the highway, they really need to treat customers better. The server who took our order never checked up on us. Just right when we got there, she assumed we were ready to order after just taking our drink orders, clearly impatient. When our drinks got empty, we had to grab someone else's attention for a refill. We were right next to the kitchen too, and we noticed how unimportant we were to them. The utter disrespect my family and I had was unappealing. So glad we're not local cause we will not be here again. But any travelers that come through, DO NOT GO HERE.
Was passing through town and decided to stop here to grab a bite to eat, very disappointed we waiting forever to get our food while others that came in after got theirs first, we also waited forever for the bill. Food was tasteless my caldo tasted old, the others disliked as well. Chips and salsa was good along with atmostphere so thats where the 2 stars come from. Diff do not recommend.
Ordered 3 enchiladas option to go. After opening the box I found tiny three strips of massa with little meat (1 &1/2 enchiladas instead of three; when I felt the weight of the food bag to go, I knew that it wasn’t what I thought it would be), little box 1/4 filled with iceberg lettuce and half tomato diced. Oh and wonderful bag of oily chips as an appetizer with red sauce. I satisfied my hunger with rice and beans ( canned BTW). I can tell the difference because I come from food business. I had a food truck before and now a restaurant in Bakersfield CA. Surprisingly their restaurant was half full due to dinner time, Friday evening and may be the only mex restaurant in the area. Service was good no doubt. Food quantity and quality was very poor. This item I ordered turned out to be very expensive $13.79 for the item that was listed for $10.99 on the menu and yet it was not even good food. Even One star is too many for them, never again at this location. GO BUY SUBWAY SANDWICH at Love’s across the street; AT LEAST YOU WILL KNOW WHAT YOU GOT PUT IN TO IT.
The wait staff are not professional or courteous. We had to ask for refills on drinks & chips many times. Do not order mini tacos they do not come with cheese or sour cream....no sides and cost near $20.00. I asked for a SIDE of sour cream was told it would be an additional $3.00. Wow! I can buy a whole 12oz of sour cream at the store for that amount. The food taste is not good. The queso is velvetta watered down & melted very bland at $12.99 a bowl. The waitress was not friendly at all. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth!!! Do not waste your hard earned money on poor quality take it to where your business is appreciated.
Food was undercooked and I ended up with food poisoning. Definitely will not be back ok
When I first sat down service was good. I then asked for a food menu. I then asked for my food to had no peppers. He said OK. Then I noticed then laughing near the bar. My food was then served and I watched them look at me while laughing. Most of my dish was nothing but peppers...... I don't know why or what makes them think that is funny or ok. I'll never ever come here again.
We had an appetizer done and found out the waitress was not ours. We waited 20 minutes to get our drink order and our actual waiter. He then got the wrong order for my husband when he could have asked this is what your order is after he just ordered. The food was over cooked some but not bad.
Let me start with the good since that is a short list. My server was friendly and polite and took care of my order quickly. She did say something so ridiculously obvious that it left me shaking my head (she said the small was slightly bigger than the extra small queso...well duh). The atmosphere was fine and the place seemed clean enough. Now the bad. The queso was the most disgusting I've ever had anywhere. It was like they melted Velveeta and added some water to thin it out. People who want queso instead of salsa want GOOD queso, not garbage. Turns out, however, that the queso was close to one of the best things I ate. I ordered a chicken quesadilla with charro beans and rice. The beans had a good flavor, but there was a very large piece of some sort of thin sliced mystery meat in them. It was too big to eat as-is and there was only a fork in the napkin - no knife. So, there was no way to cut it as it was too tough to cut with the side of the fork. I took one bite of the rice and almost spit it out. The rice tasted like it had gone bad or had been sitting out for a long time. The one mouthful I got had hard bits in it, but that flavor was just awful. The sour cream had a slightly rancid flavor, the lettuce was wilted, and the tomatoes were mushy. I can't say enough bad things about this seriously terrible food. I don't know how this place stacks up compared to other Tex Mex restaurants in this town, but I can't imagine any place serving food that is worse than this. To add insult to injury, when my check arrived, I was given a choice of tip amounts without the option to choose my own tip amount. That is absolutely unacceptable and I will never choose a forced tip, especially not for such disgusting food. I absolutely will not ever return.
The service and atmosphere were nice and welcoming. The food was disgusting. We ordered Caldo de Res, queso, birria tacos and some giant dish with all kids of meat and cheese on it. Anyways, the food was cold, the green onions were partially cold, partially warm, as if warmed in the microwave. The food tastes old and re-heated. The queso tastes like it was made of powdered milk. The whole point of my review is to let everyone know my daughter and I were sick all night and the next day, please be careful ordering food here. It was our first time and we really liked the atmosphere and service. We will not be back. I just want to bring awareness to the food.
If you want Mexican food, just go down the street to el conquistador. Salsa has NO flavor at all. The food portions were big, especially for lunch plates, but it is so bland. The waitress was rude and did not refill drinks/chips, got drink order wrong and seemed put out when requested to do the absolute bare minimum like getting to go boxes.
I must start out by saying that I’ve never been here before, this was my first experience and it will be my last. The staff completely avoided me. Took thirty minutes for someone to finally come to my table and get my drink order. Then I ran out of salsa, asked for more and never got it. The food tasted like a microwave dinner. Staff seemed to care more about customers that speak their tongue than those of us that only speak English. I wish I didn’t have to do this but I was on lunch from work so I’m glad that my boss was okay that I took a little longer than normal on my lunch break. I’ll never eat here ever again. Thanks for treating me like I wasn’t welcome.
The food was very dry and bland, fries and tacos came with little to no seasoning, and the Texas shrimp was very over cooked. And it smelled liked cleaner and also something else around our table. The place was dirty, and our waitress messed up our order a little bit, and was very absent.
Arrived for lunch and sat at the bar. Waited 15 minutes for any wait staff to acknowledge me. Was brought chips & salsa and order a beer. Literally waited another 20 minutes for my waitress to come back and take my order. She casually walked past 3 times and pulled the old “disappearing waitress” move. I finally walked out and left… warm beer still sitting on the bar! One of the all time worst restaurant service I’ve EVER had. Be better off going to Taco Bell, at least someone would take an order there. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
I had ordered the birria con consume. Usually when you order this you will get tacos to dip in the consume. When I got home to look they gave my tortillas and a large consume. I didn’t get any tacos. I just got tortillas and a consume. What am I supposed to do with that. I had called they said it was a soup. With tortillas on the side. How is consume a soup it’s literally just oil I don’t understand. I explained to the lady what I thought I was getting and she had no idea what I was talking about.
I never leave reviews but this way by far one of the worst Mexican restaurants my husband and I have ever gone to. Visually everything looks great. Online photos look great and presentation is there. Chips were stale, and service was horrible. My husband's floutas were burnt to a crisp, literally the chicken and tortilla broke into a billion pieces and was super bland. My gorditas were extremely bland with zero flavor. Never got asked for refills or checked on once through out the meal.
Half way through dinner we noticed a ROACH on the table!! What a way to make you PUKE!
If I was rating based on a normal circumstance, I’d probably give this a 3-4 rating. The food was fine, the salsa was not. It almost tasted sour but had almost no flavor. It was really spicy, though. Our waiter did a good job of being attentive without being overbearing. Not bad at all. The one star revolves around one thing. Towards the end of our meal, we looked over at the “window sill” in the middle of the restaurant, and were greeted back by your everyday friendly roach. Really nice after having already eaten. It was a really disappointing end. The things are everywhere in the world, but I also know it would have shut the restaurant down from health inspector standpoint. Hopefully they can get it corrected, but I don’t think I’ll be finding out.
Came in was greeted by the hostess then served the chips and salsa. After that the waiters which were two males were terrible. We sat there almost 15 min no drinks, then after making eye contact was still ignored.
This was the worst Mexican restaurant ever ..food was nasty as well as the service...for the price that we paid...food was cold... When I told the server she seemed like she didn't even care .. that was my first and my last time in there ...
The lady that brings the chips and salsa was very quick and very nice. I waited over 15 minutes and never had a server stop by and even acknowledge I was there. I tried the salsa and didn't really care for it so I got up and left service was not good at all
El Charro Mexican Restaurant Bar and Grill Review Cheese was kinda weak 4/10 Salsa was really hot but didn't really have a lot of depth to it 3/10 Chips were kinda stale, hard and cold 2/10 Service is slow I mean slow, as in it has been 40mins since I ordered at time of writing this I have not been served the food I've ordered. 1/10 at this moment. I mean I haven't even gotten my appetizer at this point I think I'd rather go eat very disappointing subway. You can look at my other reviews and see I don't just lightly say this but overall experience here is a 1/10. Ended up walking out. Total Time in restaurant 55mins Time to table 4mins Time to order 5 mins Time spent waiting on order 45 Never got food Not truck driver approved.
Ordered my food and ask for bowl of chicken soup. He said ok.after a while he bring me bowl od soup ,kinda meal.coocked piece of chicken, corn on the cob and vegetables all in it. With rice on the side, chopped onion .I only ask him for bowl of soup and he bring all meal.not apealing at all. Then asked him where is mine main dish. He didn't order my meal cuz he was thinking I will eat this disgusting soup.main dish was ok with lots of peppers all over.not satisfied at all.
I wanted to share some feedback regarding my recent visit to your restaurant over the weekend. After being seated by the host and receiving chips and dips, my party and I waited for approximately 20 to 30 minutes without any further service. No one came by to take our drink orders or check in with us. Unfortunately, after waiting that long without any acknowledgment, we decided to leave and dine elsewhere. We were looking forward to enjoying a meal at your establishment, and it was disappointing to have such an experience. I hope this feedback helps improve service for future guests.
This dish is called an Enchilada Rojas. It was delicious. The salsa was delicious as well. I recommend this place. The pricing is fair. 5.16.2023 Is the dishes listed is the nacho dish, chicken quesadilla, chips and salsa, when dishes not listening the pictures is the chicken fajita hot plate. Very delicious. 11.07.2024 I ordered the mixed fajita plate. It was delicious. I was able to get filled up with it. Picture will be included on the presentation of the plate. I still do recommend this place. 01.11.25 We're doing the carnivore diet. So we asked for a all meat plate. It would seem it was more for lunch than dinner. I'm not sure how the price is going to be. And did not take any photos of it. But it was not a fajita plate per se. But it was still delicious. We did not eat $50 worth of me. This is highly disappointing. After all this time I will not be back ever again. Unfortunately I did not take a photo of the plate. I would say was less than 8oz of meat on it. I am terribly disappointed in this place with all the times of coming here... Understand when you're doing carnivore. You do not eat the vegetables you do not eat the tortillas, all you eat is meat. 8 oz of meat was all that was on my plate for 25.00. what a rip-off. I had said something but they didn't want to reduce the price. At this point I do not recommend this place.
