Opinions de Big Island Coffee Hilo
If you're a coffee lover with a taste for authenticity, sustainability, and sense of aloha, Big Island Coffee Roasters is a must have. Located in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, this award-winning roastery is redefining what it means to drink Hawaiian coffee—and doing it with heart, craft, and a deep sense of place. Highly recommend! Salted Carmel Latte for the win!
Amazing place!! We were on the Big Island for vacation and stayed in Hilo for 2 nights. I think we went here all three mornings we had in Hilo. The staff was super friendly. The coffee, lattes, and food was all superb! Atmosphere also great with great music selection. We did a coffee flight one day and it came with a great pamphlet of info on all the different coffees. You can also smell a lot of the different beans they sell there. Highly recommend!!
You might drive right past this place and not even notice, but i highly recommend this place for coffee. Way better than Starbucks (maybe not as many options but quality and less chemicals). The smell coming from this place is amazing that's the first thing I noticed. The parking and inside is somewhat small in comparison to other coffee shops. If you want egg bites, this is the place to get them! You can tell they make them fresh and with wholesome ingredients. I got the Baby Honu and it was very pleasant they use sea salt which intensified the flavor of salted caramel. I can't wait to try this place again. Thier hours are 6am-2pm I believe so that's kind of limiting. I'm just happy to support a local business that doesn't charge an arm & leg.
Stopped here while we were out walking and exploring Hilo and were amazed at the wonderful tastes we experienced there! P.S. I'm a coffee snob and rate coffee places harshly lol... this place was amazing.. We had a delicious scone and an iced coffee and an Americano decaf... Loved it!
Great, convenient location! Super enjoyable atmosphere in the cafe with friendly staff! Amazing Hawai’i Island coffee and appreciate the dedication to locally sourced products. Kawehena is a very knowledgeable barista and makes excellent coffee drinks for me with fun latte art😊 Also LOVE that they have mamaki tea.
you must get the pandan latte! very unique and i haven’t had anything quite like it. the PB&J is also incredible but i highly suggest it with the lilikoi spreads oppose to the honey(tried both and lilikoi was way better). the staff was very nice and the atmosphere was really chill. if i lived there, i would’ve that would’ve been my go-to spot for studying or working!
Happened to stop in on a Sunday morning, and I'm so glad we did. The second you step out of your car, you can smell the roasting! Super fresh. We had the cold brew, nitro cold brew, and a decaf latte. Also got a popover with lilikoi butter 🤤 and some lip balm! The baristas were SO friendly, especially to my keiki! Definitely going to make this a regular stop. 🤙
Great coffee (and other drinks). Great service. I brought my entire volleyball team to Big Island Coffee Roasters and it was a great experience. Hali’a and I worked together and she was incredibly accommodating and her staff was working like a well oiled machine! Kawehena made delicious drinks and was excellent at coffee art. I’ve been multiple times in groups and solo and I’ve had consistent quality coffee and consistent quality service. Absolutely recommend!
I came here a year ago and have been trying hard to find a coffee roaster that compares. I've had no luck. I order it now and have it mailed to my home. Or, when I am lucky enough to visit, I stock up in my suitcase. It is, without question, my favourite coffee. The Swiss Decaf is excellent for when you've already had too much caffeine but need your fix. I use the whole bean (medium) and make espresso, cappuccino, and lattes with it. This is really good coffee.
We had to try this place based on the reviews and mentions in other social media. It definitely lives up to the hype. I’m not a big coffee connoisseur but I can recognize really good coffee. My cortado was excellent. It was head and shoulders better than the cortado that I tried in another cafe in downtown Hilo. This is a must-go destination if you are in town. Parking is limited.
I’ve been a member of their coffee club for several years, and have been dying to finally visit the cafe! My wife had a latte (excellent), I had the Hawaiian pour over which was the barrel-aged Ka’u. I’ve made this at home before, but this one was a religious experience! Beautiful rum aroma and taste, an exquisite cup of coffee. Can’t recommend this place highly enough!
I’ve been ordering coffee from Big Island for about six months and then finally had a chance to visit recently on our trip to the Big Island. This is without a doubt the best coffee I’ve ever had. As an Oregonian/PNW native (the land of ultimate coffee snobbery) I have had my share of premium/third wave coffee, and this stands head and shoulders! I’ve also sampled between 25-30 different Kona coffees. This is absolutely my favorite! While I enjoy the dark roasts best, each coffee I sampled was outstanding! Regarding the cafe itself, it is a quaint and cozy spot with a very pleasant atmosphere. Were I lucky enough to live in Hilo, this would undoubtedly be a regular spot for me. This is now my go-to coffee and I will be a subscription patron. I particularly love their decaf. I look forward to visiting again soon!
On our way to the Carlsmith beach , we made a quick stop by arch coffee shop and boy they had some amazing drinks to offer. Parking can be a bit challenging though there are spots available to grab on the adjacent parking lot. We ended up getting Mocha with almond milk and Coldbrew with Geisha Cascara cold foam But shoutout to Allegra was an amazing host and extremely patient in helping us understand the coffee drinks that they had to offer and as well answered all our questions around our orders. The place has an amazing vibe and being next to the beach just makes it super convenient for the visitors to pick up and go some of their amazing drinks. Do give them a definite try!!!
I’m a foodie and coffee lover. I always prefer local coffee houses, I enjoy the local ingredients. I feel like one can get a sense of the local culture through their food and drinks. Big Island Coffee Roasters is PHENOMENAL. For a hot drink I highly recommend the Pandan Latte. It’s sooo smooth and has the perfect amount of flavor not too sweet not little just right! It has pumpkin and sweet potato flavors to give you an idea. Next, iced honey latte with Hawai’i espresso (add $2), again smooth just sweet enough. Lastly (for us), Matcha Latte, get this sweetened with honey. If it’s good enough for my 7 year old daughter (not much of a sweet tooth but loves a hint of sweetness like I do)… it’s good enough for most adults. Food, PB&J. It’s a nice light snack. Service was excellent, the gal made great recommendations and very friendly! We are first time visitors from Florida. Loved the experience!
Amazing little cafe and roaster! Sisco was very helpful walking us through the various beans, processes, and roasts they offered. We got two pour overs and agreed it was one of the best coffees we have had. Amazing coffee and hawaii coffee 101!
They sell the best coffee on the island. You can go into their site and have the coffee brand shipped to you around the world. Great people and world class coffee. Their cafe is cute and a stop over
Big Island Coffee Roasters is a must visit. Their coffee delivers a delicate yet complex flavor that’s smooth, aromatic, and deeply satisfying. Also, the açaí bowl is a tropical dream of fresh fruit, honey and perfectly balanced with crunchy granola. Finally, the shop itself is cozy and welcoming, with friendly staff who are passionate about their craft and coffee.
Great coffee. We took variety of coffees to go and each was delicious. Our group tried few cakes and they were great too, service was tentative and quick. Best coffee this far in Hawaii
Loved our visit to Big Island Coffee Roasters! We ordered the pandan latte, mocha latte, chai latte, and egg bites—everything was delicious. The pandan latte was unique and flavorful, and the mocha latte was rich without being too sweet. The chai latte was nicely spiced and comforting, and the egg bites were fresh and satisfying. The space is beautiful and modern, and it’s really cool to see the coffee being roasted on-site. Friendly staff and great quality coffee—definitely a must-stop if you’re on the Big Island!
A really nice Cafe selling authentic Hawaiian Coffee in Hilo downtown. The most interesting part of this cafe is the adjoining coffee roasting area, where early in the morning you can view the coffee roasting process around 9 AM. The coffee is great, while they have a nice large menu for baked items as well. The staff are super nice, very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. There is plenty of free customer parking in their own lot. The cafe also has clean restrooms for its customers. The ambiance is very chic and has a very controlled level of noise, a lot of people were working out of this cafe during mid day. They also sell a lot of their own coffee beans, grinder coffee, and sachets. They also have a dedicated corner for their own merchandise and items. The cafe is fully wheelchair accessible and they also have a parking spot for such customers right next to the door. Highly recommended if you are in Hilo or have landed or are taking a flight out of Hilo airport.
When you live on a rural island there's a difference between the best latte on the island and the best latte ever. Big Island Coffee Roasters makes the best latte ever. Locally sources and roasted coffee bean are balanced and delicious. The milk is steamed to perfection and is thick, sweet, and creamy. Add a handmade flavor like vanilla, honey, or pandan and it's just the right amount without over powering your cup. They are consistent and I always look forward to popping in for one.
We were from Tokyo. Usually I'm used to that massive concrete jungle, so stumbling into this spot was literally everything. The local, cozy vibes are immaculate. The staff? Absolute sweethearts who actually took the time to explain the menu to me. And let’s talk about the coffee, it’s not giving "basic nitro brew," it actually has its own unique flavor profile that straight up slaps. 10/10 recommend!
I liked everything about them. Way better then some major coffee shops. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Best thing is that they close to their airport so if you just came to Hawaii or leaving Its a must stop. Girls working there are great at their craft. They also have nitro tea which was a nice new thing to try. Definitely recommend the lemon one.
Excellent establishment with a friendly staff, beans roasted on site, treats & food "stuff" with excellent drink choices. That is a live cam of the Volcano that was getting ready & did erupt the next day! Handsome & beautiful staff & customers! Enjoy!
The Ka'u variety is an underrated coffee hiding in plain sight in the shadow of the more famous Kona variety. Tried a dark roast Ka'u peaberyy pourover which was exquisite.
The single beast coffee beans I’ve ever tried. Went in to get coffees to enjoy there, the latte was so delicious we stayed and ordered a second. When it was time to leave we purchased bags of beans for us and friends to try it too. Cannot recommend enough.
We ordered a Pandan Latte and the Salted Honu Mocha. Both were 10/10. Highly recommended this coffee shop. When we were there they had a live stream of Halemaʻumaʻu crater on the TV.
Excellent vibes at this cafe. Great drinks and snacks. The service was fast and the people working seemed happy to be there!
Got the Salted Honu Mocha with oat milk, less ice, sugar, and salt — so good! Love that rich dark chocolate flavor. 😋
Such a cozy and welcoming spot! The coffee was fantastic—smooth, rich, and clearly crafted with care. What made our visit extra special was the attention to detail: my daughter ordered a hot chocolate, and they surprised her with a cute bunny design in the foam! It absolutely made her day. Friendly staff, beautiful presentation, and high-quality drinks—definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.
What a delightful find. Big Island Coffee Roasters in Hilo, Hawaii, is a must stop for coffee lovers. They roast all their beans in-house, giving you a fresh brew every time. The staff was friendly and was able to answer all of our questions about the roasting process.
I could see the bluish smoke and smell the coffee roasting before I even got out of my car! Then, it was so nice to step out of the Hilo rain and into this brightly lit, nicely decorated, bustling little cafe. Inside there was upbeat music playing and a friendly staff to warmly greet me. I got the Salted Honu Mocha Latte which was amazing. Really the best cup of coffee I'd had in years. Bold, rich and chocolatey, much higher quality than Starbucks. They even had a window that allowed me to peer into the room next door and watch the roasting process. The one criticism would be that the only food they offer is a couple types of pastries, so don't come here hungry.
Great Island Coffee with the perfect atmosphere. As you sample a flight of locally produced coffees you can enjoy watching coffee being roasted fresh in their roasting room. Definitely stop by for an amazing cup off coffee and a wonderful selection of other locally sourced foods and other merchandise.

You have to ask for Hawaiian espresso, they don’t just give it to you. Its extra bc it’s precious. Ask! It matters. I get the latte w 1/2 swt dk cacao and oatmilk. Hawaii does have the best coffee in the world and Ive been around it twice.

Big Island, coffee roasters or as I like to call them big coffee serves up a delicious cup of Joe and a great tasting as well as experience in the coffee shop. The ladies were really nice and knowledgeable and having ordered your coffee from Colorado for years. It was so awesome to see the roasting and try some fresh coffee. Thanks for the awesome experience and I’ll continue ordering those awesome coffee teabags thank you.

While the coffee is excellent and the baristas are friendly, something as basic as an ask for less water added was missed twice in two days so a low service rating. Will try once more tomorrow...third try was the charm! I received my correct order today!!
There are other coffee places that offer similar drinks for a better or cheaper price. The only thing I liked was that their coffee had a roasted on date and you can see them roast coffee as well. It wasn't bad coffee, I just felt like I was paying a higher price for their building and to watch them roast.

I got a Carmel Iced latte. Not the move. I like the sweet because it balances the bitter, but there's no carmel in this. It honestly tastes kinda gross. Also I didn't feel like there were a lot of options when it came to ordering. I don't think the place was worth the hype.
I used to love the coffee here but all this year, its tasted really funny , gross and there’s an awful smell outside. Last year I gave this place a great review but this year I don’t like it. I don’t like the coffee there at all. Yuck! -Ps its not a paper straw like AI says, its plastic & splintered on end…quality at this place took serious nose dive this year. Boo!

RIP OFF. Ordered our coffees and asked the barista after the fact - what kind of blend do you use? Only to find out they use South American coffee….and you have to ask for big island coffee, which is also an up charge ha. Of course the cashier didn’t ask us if we wanted big island coffee. Rude staff to tourists. Disappointing - what a scam!
I chose Big Island Coffee specifically because the website claims beans are roasted to order. Freshness is my reason to pay a premium, so this matters. Before ordering, I even contacted them to confirm this was true. They assured me it was. My first order arrived quickly and the coffee tasted good, but the roast date was already three days old before I had even placed the order. That directly contradicts the “roasted to order” claim. I reached out to explain the issue, and I was told they would look into what happened. I decided to give them another chance and placed a larger order on February 1. It didn’t ship until February 8, and when it arrived on February 12, the roast date on the bags was February 1. The beans sat at least a week before shipping, which again doesn’t match the expectation created by their marketing. The coffee itself is decent, but accuracy and transparency matter. Marketing something as roasted to order sets a clear expectation, and repeatedly missing that expectation erodes trust. This company and Chyll is not to be trusted, they don’t respond to voicemails or answer phone calls. Chyll just emails back with scripted customer service talking points and doesn’t take accountability for being untruthful.
