My sister first introduced me to this restaurant ~10 years ago? We tried the family style meal last night for 4 and it was very good. I love the farm-to-table fresh produce, Hawaiian-Asian fusion flavorings innovative mixes offered in their cocktails and their dishes and sauces. The dining area is spacious and they keep their "garage" glass wall open to encourage healthy air flow. The host and our server (new trainee flying solo) were friendly and helpful. It can be more challenging to hear softer voices in the restaurant because of the interior decor.
What an awesome brunch space! Everything we ordered was delicious (roasted carrots, banana pancakes, ahi melt (usually one is used but today it was ahi), and my iced Chai latte! Super extra brownie points for being dog friendly since we like to take Panda with us when we go out He also made a few dog friends while there (Winnie and Rosie). Service was prompt and friendly. There are indoor and outdoor seating options. We will absolutely be back..but until then, I know I'll be dreaming about those scrumptious ulu fries!
This place balances between gourmet and local hangout. The menu is driven by local, small scale, produce seasonality. What struck me most was how invested staff are in the dishes, the origins of produce - and how they managed to slow down the atmosphere of the experience. To me, it was a relaxing and satisfying experience - a kind of meditation on what constitutes a meal connected to the land and the people.
🌅 Mud Hen Water – Honolulu Review: Mud Hen Water offered an outstanding modern local dining experience, blending innovative flavors with strong execution and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The menu reflects contemporary Hawaiian cuisine with thoughtful preparation and high-quality ingredients, while the service and ambiance make it ideal for a closing celebration dinner. This restaurant delivered one of the most refined meals of the trip and is highly recommended for travelers seeking a memorable culinary finale.
Delicious. The he'e (octopus) here is consistenly well prepared and yummy, and the clams were well balanced with coconut milk. Please find another way to to serve ulu, as the deep fry came out dry and bland.
Excellent meal with a wonderful atmosphere. We had the fried ulu, Szechuan lotus root, raw and roasted carrots, sausage and clams, and the goat cheesecake. I would have it all again but particularly recommend the lotus root and cheesecake!
Best brunch in Honolulu!! Loco mocos and eggs benny are great the first time in Honolulu, but MHW delivers delicious, local options you can't get just anywhere. The tuna crudo to start was refreshing and packed with flavor. Her smash burger was made with local beef and you could taste the love. But the Pork Sisig (sizzling pig's head) stole the show for both of us. 😋 It is absolutely scrumptious! Don't be afraid to try something new. You won't regret it. 🧠🤯😎🤙🏼🏄🏼♀️☀️🐟🍖#eatlocal
One of the best meals I had on the island. I would definitely come back again.
A local recommended the restaurant and it didn’t disappoint! Amazing fusion food! Really enjoyed every dish (so much so I forgot to take a photo of the meatballs until toward the end!) We didn’t need to wait for a table, all staff members were super friendly. Jill served us and was perfectly attentive and checked in the right amount. The cocktails were delish too! Would definitely return!
We stopped in because we love the PBS/Netflix series "Somebody Feed Phil", which Mud Hen Water was featured in... and we are so glad we did! Immediately the staff was warm and friendly, despite us coming in for their very last reservation time slot. They guided us through popular dishes with their recommendations and cocktail suggestions, and we felt very taken cared of. The food of course was excellent and gave us many many delicious subtle surprises. We loved that there is a focus on local sourced ingredients and as a result everything tasted fresh and flavorful. Our favorites of the night were the Peanut Tofu and the Rice Pudding dessert! At the end, the absolute best part of Mud Hen Water is the price. My partner and I each chose a "small plate", a full entree, cocktails and shared a desert...and walked out paying about than $120 with tip. For the quality of food, I don't think you'll find better in Honolulu. Ahh-MAZING.
A cozy farm-to-table restaurant with a very cute interior serving Hawaiian-Asian fusion dishes that feature whole foods. We ordered the okra salad, fried 'ulu, pohole, carrots, fried chicken, he'e roll, brownie, and rice pudding. Every single dish was packed with impeccable flavors with a pleasantly surprising twist. I found my dining experience delightful and refreshing — highly recommended!
Had a really lovely quick dinner here and it was truly delicious from start to finish! We mopped everything between the two of us. Particularly enjoyed the kind service, the kitchen cocktail (Beet juice, basil leaf, Strega, gin, lemon juice), the mapo tofu rice cakes (could be even better if made spicy, but super good textures and ginger flavor!), chicken long rice croquettes, he'e roll, and ginger rice pudding. So many more things I'd love to try next time, like their beet poke and cured fish :)) 2nd visit tried a whole lot more and everything was delicious as the first! Especially like their kitchen cocktails.
One of the best restaurants in Honolulu by far. They do a great job of providing a contemporary Hawaiian dining experience that draws on the islands’ diverse culinary influences without feeling contrived. Each dish was unique and well balanced with fresh, local produce at the forefront. I absolutely loved the peanut tofu which has a creamy consistency that’s almost like a soft cheese. The Sichuan lotus root with rainbow carrots was also so delicious, as was the buttered ulu with a savoury kick of fermented soybeans. And one of my favourite of all was the perfectly chewy, savoury mapo tofu rice cakes. Drinks are great too - you can’t go wrong with any of the cocktails. The dining environment is also really pleasant and staff were nice and well informed about the menu. It’s slightly on the pricy end but well worth the cost.
Mud Hen Water has an interesting, delicious menu. We tried several unique dishes from the he’e roll, katsu-style chicken croquettes to the kiawe brownie which are had a fun twist. I’d recommend trying this restaurant out if you’re looking for interesting and great-tasting food!
First and foremost, I must admit the service that I had was such an esteemed and extraordinary experience from my server, Jennifer Aki. I believe her name was. She is very knowledgeable of the menu, we had a food allergy request, and she had a book available for us to review. She really understood the importance of us. She recommended a few dishes, cocktails and dessert! Dog friendly place, the outside patio was the perfect spot, and I would definitely recommend this place.
My hubby took me to a bday dinner here last week and I’ve got to say that everything we tried here was a 10/10 and took a leap out of the culinary comfort zone, elevating Hawaiian food and letting locally farmed produce shine. I’ve never been so proud to be eating reimagined Hawaiian food, and enjoying a twist on a classic beverage. I’ve already told my gals we are due for a girls night out at this restaurant. The ambiance- 10/10, service 10/10, and the tastiness 12/10. We ordered the ulu and the chicken long rice croquette for starters, and whoa…hello umami bomb!! For our mains we ordered the sausage and clams along with the house bread, the ludovico chicken, and the opakapaka which was a special…we obviously took home food because it was too much but we wanted to try it all. It’s hard to rank all these dishes because everything was so different and tasted amazing. The clear winner tho was the chicken long rice croquette. We haven’t recovered since! We will be back to enjoy their rotating menu. We hear their weekend brunch is a must!
10/10 - amazing restaurant. I had such hesitation approaching the menu at first because I need to become more cultured but HOLY MOLY- every bite was incredible. Please try the Chicken Long Rice Croquettes, Mapo Rice Cakes, Szechuan Lotus Root and Local l’a Fresh Catch Crudo. *Chef’s Kiss* .. so satisfied! Bartender made amazing mezcal drinks for us!!
Great service, tasty bites. We were there for a birthday party and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. They explained all the dishes and it was a good experience to share the family menu amongst friends. I especially liked the chicken long rice croquettes and beet poke. The brownie with black sesame gelato (what a unique combo!) was also very good!
We did the family style meal for a group of 4. Some dishes were hits, some were misses, so I would do A La Carte instead. It was recommended that as our first time there, the family style was a good introduction. I liked the croquettes, sausage and clam + the bread, and the 3 family style desserts were really good. Service was also good and food came out fast.
Try too hard, made up not tasty foods, severely overpriced for foods not worth it(bowl of carrots for 20 bucks, bowl of supposedly okra but lacking okra and full of French beans 20 bucks, ok desert! We sent some soggy chicken dishes back. The chicken was tasty! Emma was our server, sweet and kind and provided great service. About 15 min wait to get a table. Atmosphere, we got stuck at the corner table of a somewhat empty restaurant, warm and damp! Definitely misfire on our side for dining here.
