Since I was a kid, I’ve always seen the Tanaka of Tokyo restaurant sign over the top floor of Ala Moana and wondered what it was like. I managed to grab one of the last available reservations for Valentine’s Day and had my first Teppanyaki/Hibachi experience here. I had a full-course steak, shrimp, scallop and lobster meal, at a very reasonable price. They had real Japanese A5 Wagyu available too. We could tell the restaurant was a well-oiled machine with highly competent staff in every role and level. There was a noticeable air of polish and rehearsal to every step of the experience from check in until literally the moment I was out the door. The next occasion I have, I will definitely be back!
Fun and delicious experience! Prices are reasonable considering locations and service. We tried filet steak and chicken. Both were good and more than enough quantity after also getting veggies and rice to start. Be prepared for a lot of markups for drinks, fried rice, family photo, etc. but you can say no most of those without issue. You’ll likely be sitting with some strangers so be ready to chat a bit. We made a reservation for a Saturday evening. Seemed like those without reservations and only 2 people were able to get in relatively quickly.
It was pretty empty when we came (it was a Thursday evening) and it was only me and my husband on our table BUT our chef Keanu (Reeves) made it funny. Our server Jordan was also very nice! Food was amazing.
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Tanaka of Tokyo yet—our family's all-time favorite celebration spot! Well, spank me with a wet lobster tail! For our family, Tanaka of Tokyo is the go-to place for birthdays, retirements, and just-because celebrations. We've hosted countless birthdays at both the Waikiki Central and Ala Moana locations. We even celebrated my mother's 80th birthday in the Ala Moana restaurant's side room, and they easily and graciously handled our party of 40 guests! We also brought our VIP guests from Japan here for dinner, and the food and service were so good that our friends still talk about it as one of their most memorable meals in Hawaii. So why do we love Tanaka of Tokyo? First of all, the food is DEE-LICIOUS! People often think it’s a traditional Japanese restaurant, but really, it’s a Japanese-style steakhouse. Their steaks are mouthwatering, the lobster tails and scallops are scrumptious, and ohhhh—the shrimp! So bouncy and juicy, especially when cooked right on the Tanaka cooktops. My husband knows to order the seared ahi appetizer to keep me smiling. And let me tell you—the fried rice is to die for! I love that we can customize the amount of garlic. The kids want a ton, and my husband and I prefer just a smidge. Of course, the highlight of the evening is the cooking show. I always giggle at the smiley face drawn with oil on the cooktop and the dancing shrimp tails. The kids squeal with delight when the chef lights the fire, creates the erupting onion volcano, and juggles rice bowls. It’s pure fun! On top of the amazing food and presentation, the service is impeccable. From the moment you arrive, it feels like you're in Japan. That thoughtful attention continues until they open the door with a bow as you leave. Everyone is just so darn nice there! I also love that they’ve added a birthday package. For a small extra charge, you get an absolutely gorgeous and strawberry-licious Japanese-style celebration cake. It’s not too sweet, melts in your mouth, and makes you sigh with happiness. Tanaka of Tokyo is an epic restaurant for families, visitors, and anyone looking for a unique and memorable dining experience. Give it a try—but save me a tail!
$60 for steak, lobster 🦞 miso soup, salad, hot green tea and choice of ice cream is a steal! The atmosphere is awesome, the people are very friendly and the service was amazing! The chef was fun and put on a good show, while cooking all of our food perfectly. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Every single time I come here, everything is so incredible! Tanaka of Tokyo, you are my favorite place. The food and the service is amazing and we just love the show! Our waiter was Enzo, our chef was Mikael- they were so awesome, great service. Steven, the manager was the absolute nicest, he came to check on us multiple times and was just so great!! We had the steak and lobster and shrimp and boy was it so delicious. Cooked to perfection, so flavorful and juicy. The fried rice is the best here, so good. Then we finished it off with chocolate ice cream- so decadent. I always leave here grinning from ear to ear. I love you Tanaka of Tokyo!
Every special event (past two years) I make it a point to take my family there to celebrate because it's going to be a very memorable dining experience.
Tanaka of Tokyo West was really convenient in the Ala Moana Shopping Center. My daughter and I celebrated her good grades in school and I did not expect the staff to sing her a song with a cake I ordered. The experience was something we would remember forever! Food was awesome as always and Chef Anderson was really funny in his show. There was so much food that we could not finish eating everything! We cannot wait to come back again soon!
There is no question that guest service is at the forefront of every employees mind when dining at this particular Tanaka of Tokyo. From the time we entered the restaurant we were greeted with exceptional customary Japanese hospitality. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS, packed with flavor, and prepared with such pride that it elevated the entire dining experience. My husband, daughter, and I enjoyed the seafood combination, which included a bountiful lobster tail, calamari, salmon, and scallops. Every single morsel was delectable. My son enjoyed the Utage, which included the deep sea gourmet lobster and the center-cut filet mignon. All entrees included tossed green salad, grilled shrimp, Teppanyaki vegetables, steamed or fried rice, pickled vegetables, miso soup, Japanese green tea and dessert. An abundance of exquisite nourishment topped with 5 star customer service makes this dining experience easily 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
10/10 probably the best food I’ve had my entire trip, stopped in for a bento lunch and it was delicious wish I could come here everyday.
The place is easy to find: the top floor of the Ala Moana. A staff member first took the order and noted any dietary restrictions, then the chef--who held a talk show while cooking--came. They served juicy vegetables such as mushrooms, bean sprouts, and onion, and of course, they cooked the entrée well and as requested. After the meal was finished, the manager came and asked for feedback. To sum up, great food, great virgin cocktails, excellent service!
Very entertaining place to have dinner. Our chef was fun and talkative. He is very good at rice bowl flipping (look at the video). The food was very tasty. Nothing beats blazing hot steak seconds of the grill. If you ordered fried rice. You can request extra eggs. It’s a little extra but the fried rice taste much better.
The food is superior! Top grade beef, lobster, and the blackened Ahi is to die for!!! The service is excellent, the atmosphere is fun and exciting, and the cooks make the meal a feast you will not forget
Chef Cameron was so entertaining. Our kids loved his theatrics. Great personality and presented well.
It was our first time here! Came to celebrate my boyfriend birthday but he didnt want them singing to him lol so we kept quiet about it. Our server Grace was very nice, and service was great! Always with a smile. Chef Joe is amazing, made our first experience here unforgettable. The food was delicious. Thanks chef joe!!!
This was my first time here and I can't wait to come back! While the food was not only some of the best I've had while on the island, the service and the people there manage to outshine it. As a customer I always felt taken care of and catered to and in a kind/caring way. Shout out to our chef Ka Ki Tam, when I come back I'll have to request him again to cook!
Totally loved this place. Authentic food in generous portions, the hibachi performance was entertaining. Usually has a waitlist everyday so reservation would be recommended. Got the free portrait photo too😍.
This is the gold standard for teppan style cooking. Service is amazing. Chefs are always fun and extremely talented. The best quality of meats/seafood and veggies, but their sauce is really unmatched. Fried rice upgrade is a must!
I have been here 11 years ago and now again, both times lots of fun and delicious food.
Tanaka is a teppanyaki restaurant like Benihana. The chef cooks in front of you on a large grill and is part of the show. Food quality is here is superior with Wagyu beef selections. Always a good time and on the very top floor of the mall.
Great place to bring the family, or work team, or friends for a special event or just for a good time. Not inexpensive though, so be prepared for $50-$100 per person, but definitely an enjoyable experience!
We had such a great experience on Valentines Day. The drinks were amazing and the show was incredible. It helps if your group is enthusiastic, it's way more fun that way. We had the head chef Tom, server Lisa and even had our photo taken by Irina. Usually places like this are all style mediocre flavor-- not this place, some of the best food we had on the island!
The most value-price balanced restaurant in Hawaii. Spent $300 + 15% tips for two but compared to other costly restaurants, this was the most valuable and satisfying restaurant in the island (personal experience)
Great food but the service is what separates this place from most others. Three of four of us ordered a meat entree, however my wife is vegan so they made a fresh veggie special just for her before cooking all the meat. Everything tasted great and we never had empty drinks. The chef was entertaining and did a great job.
A Wonderful place to be with family. Celebrated Mothers Day Anthony was an awesome chef. Liked his descriptions on every items he cooked
Recently celebrated our daughter’s 15th birthday with her friends and the food was delicious, great amount and although you have to purchase photos as an option, it was a great service for photos! Will definitely go back!
Service was excellent, server was very polite and attentive. Chef was very professional and entertaining.
We had a great time! The chef was very friendly and put on a great show. The food was delicious and unlike many hibachi places, they didn't just throw ridiculous amounts of butter on everything, yet it still tasted great. Will definitely be back!
The food was fresh & delicious. Our server made sure we were always filled with drinks. The cook was a great showman. It was a very enjoyable experience.
Excellent chef that was entertaining and great conversationalist. We were the only two people at our hibachi so we interacted with him the whole time and really enjoyed it. The food was perfectly cooked and tasted great. The portions were huge, we took a lot back to the hotel after getting stuffed. Highly recommended.
The food was delicious and our chef, Joe, made the meal fun. The filet was one of the best I’ve ever had, the meat was so tender. The lobster and scallops were also cooked perfect. I honestly loved the whole meal and would eat here again. I also love the photos they take of you and your party. It was my husband’s and my anniversary and we loved being able to have a nice photo to take home. All the staff were friendly from the moment we walked in.
Thanksgiving dinner was made even more special by the crew at Tanaka of Tokyo. Food was outstanding and Chef Kaki was awesone, very entertaining and my Granddaughter had a great time watching his amazing skills. Chef Kaki made her feel special. Thank you Tanaka of Tokyo and Chef Kaki, we will definitely be back.
We are regulars here at this location and come for both celebrations and "just because". We love the fun time with the chef; and, the food is always good. Service is always "spot on"!
Always excellent service and dining experience The food prepared by Chef Mikael was well seasoned and delicious! He was also engaging and entertaining. Alissa, the Manager and our server were attentive, professional, and receptive our dietary requirements. I highly recommend this restaurant that has an excellent family-friendly atmosphere!
Again...we live on Maui and fly over JUST TO EAT HERE! Such great everything! We love the food, atmosphere, staff, presentation and all of it! We are so grateful for you all! See you soon!!!
We enjoyed a lovely evening with Chef Joe and Sophia. Tanaka's never disappoints but our last visit was one to remember. Thank you Chef Joe and Sophia for making our dinner so special. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
It has been 19 years since I have been able to eat teppanyaki due to my allergy to Gluten. It was my favorite way to celebrate with special people. But then celiac put a stop to it. No more!! Tanaka has answered a very easy and wonderful way to enjoy the show, service, and delicious food associated with this special type of cuisine. How? They have a special menu that clearly labels everything you can have and what modifications can be made. The chef asked everyone at our table what the orders were and what allergies there were. They made our food FIRST while the surface was clean so there would be no cross contamination! Everyone at our table was totally fine with getting a double show and allowing us an amazing and safe experience. GF tamari sauce instead of soy, oil instead of butter, everything was carefully detailed. I can't wait to go back, thank you SO much for allowing us to feel safe while celebrating.
A. Beautiful dining experience at Tanaka of Tokyo East, Honolulu. Immediate attention was given to us, as we entered through the front door. Promptly set us at our table. Alex was our host, and he was exceptional. Attentive to our individual orders. Explained everything. Waited listened then spoke. A true Gentleman. Very personable. Chef Joe, was a 5 Star Chef. Very personable, very skilled, very talented in his knife skills. Entertaining. Spoke to you like you have known him for a long time. Made the occasion special. All the various food items came out one after the other. Started with a salad, just the appropriate size. Very fresh and crisp. It was exciting to see the chef prepare the meal in front of you. The meat was seared and cooked to perfection along with all the vegetables and fried rice. Ending with delicious ice cream & hot tea. Thank you for this wonderful experience. 🙏❤️🏖️
My dad loves this place for special occasions so my family has been here several times and the food has always been perfectly prepared. We were celebrating an anniversary and birthday with our party of 6. We didnt make reservations but we were seated quickly. The price is a bit high but understandable for the experience, food quality, and service. Meal came with miso soup, leafy salad, and hot tea. Our host was Slade… he was on it and never skipped a beat. He was extremely attentive to our needs. Refreshments were kept full at all times. He was polite, approachable, and took presentation seriously. Everything down to napkin placement was on point. Our chefʻs name was Justin… we are from Hawaiʻi and he was able to keep us engaged and laughing. No corny tourist jokes, just non-stop entertainment. He wasnt the best with his knife and fork skills BUT he made up for it all with his loud and hilarious audience engagement. From lion king refrences to alternative names for beansprouts, he was creative and fun. Food was cooked perfectly, my dad is picky about his steak, but Justin made it as requested. He made sure to be careful about my nieceʻs seafood allergy and cooked shellfish last. It wasnt a particularly busy night but the service was exceptional from all staff we encountered, even Teana the assistant manager helped us get seated, refilled beverages, and checked on us towards the end of our meal. Recommended experience.
Came here last night(day before valentines) was awesome….even though I had a bit much to drink, CHEF MIKAEL sure did made us laugh….his service is so welcoming and warm that I recommend having him as your chef!!! Food was very delicious as well! Love it !
Awesome service even though we didn't have a reservation. Wait time was short. Server was on point. Hibachi Chef was a real pro presenting the show he had performed. Even the photographer was professional, really clean and clear pictures of my family and I. I will definitely attend another dinner show in the future.
As always, what a wonderful experience at this fine restaurant. As a local resident, it’s such a pleasure to bring family and friends—whether they live here or are visiting—to enjoy an evening that’s consistently exceptional. On this visit, Head Chef Joe was absolutely amazing. I’m sure he always is, but it was such a treat to meet him in person and experience not just his incredible cooking, but his humor and genuine aloha spirit. He truly made the night unforgettable. Mahalo to the entire staff and management for continuing to deliver the kind of service, atmosphere, and cuisine that remind me why this place is one of my favorites on the island. Can’t wait to come back!
The ambiance is very good to give you that Teppan-Yaki style of cooking. You pay a lot for the show on how the cook does his technique and can humor you for entertainment. Depending on who's your cook, there are times where he can overcook or burn certain dishes. The cook can easily be distracted by requests from others around the table. Other than that, it is a very clean place. Well kept. The cooking area is neat. Wish there was more food for the price you pay because it's a bit pricey per person.
Okay not as good as I recall, but fulfilled my TofT craving. Jacob did a good job of entertaining. Only disappointment in the food were the kuzu cuts of rib rye, for that price? Filet, shrimp and fried rice were decent. I feel like the wait staff sort of rushed our table mates from Japan. I don’t think they are used to being asked if they want a take out container while they were still enjoying their meal. Shouldn’t rush them to eat! Auwee. We will be back to support my dear friend, but not for awhile.
Our cousin, my wife and I visited the Ala Moana restaurant in early February 2023 and waited a short while before we were seated. We ordered ribeye steak, lobster and sirloin, and lobster dinner set. The chef came after a long wait to demonstrate his artistic flair and impressed us with the cooking utensils on his hands as he goes about cooking the fried rice and vegetables before the meats and seafood. There were other customers seated together in a circular formation. We found the food satisfactory, with the fried rice was a bit bland and meat over cooked. A lady photographer came to take pictures of the customers, including us, and we were given a postcard group photo, although we did not buy any of the photographs she took, since we came only for dinner. The bill came to USD$173 including tips for the three of us.
Food was not seasoned enough, it was cooked well but everything was bland. Our chef was ok , not as many tricks as i would expect for Tanaka.
Got seated, took a while just for the chef to come out. Took longer for the food to come out for everything to get started. our alcohol drinks took a while too but regular drinks came at an ok pace. Food was alright. The steak was super juicy just not a whole lot of flavor as well as the shrimp and everything else we had. You’d think it’d be a lot better for the price but oh well. Our chef was great and our server was good. Lots of energy and attentiveness. Pretty much the only thing that’s saving this from being a 1 star. In the middle of ordering dude comes and says the restaurant is partnered with somebody or something I don’t really remember. Anyway he says they’re taking complimentary pictures so we’re excited. Towards the end of the dinner he comes back with ONE complimentary picture, no frame And a bunch of other pictures all nice and framed up. We’re happy and he hits us with “these are $15 each” so we’re like whatever and still buy about 7-10 pictures. Took forever to get our check after asking multiple times because we had a reservation for the escape rooms so we were trying to just pay and go since we were already late due to everything taking so long. Waited 30-40 damn minutes for a check. I cannot even begin or try to understand at all why it takes that long for a receipt. After finally getting our checks and paying we get our receipts back. This was Saturday August 2nd. They just contacted one of us THREE DAYS LATER! ( August 5th ) at NIGHT TIME mind you. saying that payment didn’t go through and we didn’t pay & they’re going to take action and file a report against us because the person they contacted didn’t respond. They were on a flight back to the mainland, just visiting home. Nothing she can do on the plane. So not only did they have three whole days to say something, they give us a receipt for a paid bill. WHY DID WE GET A RECEIPT THAT SAID PAID IF IT APPARENTLY DIDN’T GO THROUGH? How do you take that long to charge someone out AND STILL MESS UP? & then threatening to file something because of their lack of? If that even is actually the case or they were just trying to scam us out of 500 more dollars for sub par food. Insanely ridiculous. Won’t ever be going back.
Food was great BUT MY COMPLAINT IS how they treated this elderly couple . They seated all of us and took our order started to surve us salad , they then came over to this couple and told them they COULD NOT SIT AT THE TABLE BC THEY DIDN'T ORDER ENOUGH FOOD!! And took there salad away from them😦😡 and made them move to the bar or leave!! This place wasn't even busy!! Like how RUDE AND UNCALLED FOR! so for that reason we will not return 😠 couldn't believe it! That was not right what they did. I EXPECTED BETTER FROM HERE!
i asked for well done sirloin, it was still pink on the inside. I don't eat seafood and didn't order, but was still given seafood in my plate. the show is unnecessary just makes you wait for your food. place is too dim you can hardly see anything. Overall a terrible experience, especially considering the price paid. Do not recommend.
Very unfriendly to children. I brought my 2-year-old son here, and he was holding a few small cookies in his hand. The staff insisted on taking them away, saying no outside food was allowed. I honestly don’t understand — it was just a toddler’s snack. This place clearly has no sense of hospitality or understanding toward families with young kids. Very disappointed.
