UPDATE: Went back for a second time before we leave. Same great service. Same great food. Where to begin. We were in Houston for NCA and found this place on Google. We called to make a reservation and they were super friendly. When we arrived they were super friendly and the staff were amazing. The food, wow, some of the best sushi ive ever had. Probably going to go back before we leave.
An adorable experience. From the moment I called to make a reservation for two, the person who answered the phone gave me very good vibes. The place is a hidden gem in the city that I completely recommend. The food was exquisite, and the atmosphere was very beautiful. The staff was very kind and attentive at every moment. It was completely worth the drive from San Antonio to try the food at this place, and I will definitely come back to eat here when I go to Houston again.
The food is so tasty. Out waitress was very helpful and kind and courteous. My only complaint is I wish they had coasters. I felt bad because the condensation from my drink was dripping down on the table. Overall it was a delightful experience.
This place is AMAZING!!! The sushi here is on point and the staff are super nice and friendly. We got all specialty rolls. They have a nice variety to chose from. I was here on a business trip and we liked it so much we went two nights in a row. If you’re looking for a place with great sushi and friendly staff, look no further than Sapporo. I will definitely be back here next time I’m in Houston!
This place is my favorite spot to hangout on Sundays afternoon for my lunch. Happy hour is all day for Saturday and Sunday. The service is awesome and food is amazing, fresh and well cooked. Sashimi is fresh, creamy and the quality is good. The staff here is kind, helpful, and super friendly. I recommend giving them a try ❤️
Update: My sister asked to make a reservation for 16 people for a birthday celebration and they were so accommodating. They even put us by the windows like she asked. Such great people and food. Above and beyond! Came here for, the first time, before a concert. Such great service and delicious food! It was happy hour, which was nice, but that peach sake is a must! So good! Street parking of course, so definitely give them your business. I love sitting by the windows.
Ever time I go the food is always consistently fresh and tasty. Sunday all-day happy hour is fantastic and the service is stellar.
Personally, the one thing I look for first when walking into somewhere new is the customer service. The staff here made sure my wife and I felt welcome. They consistently checked on us and paid attention to our refreshments. We never had to wait to get their attention for a refill or extras. The food is on point. We didn't order a big meal, just a couple small items. The Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura and a Spicy Tuna roll. The shrimp was juicy and flavorful and the breading was crunchy but not oily. The vegetables all tasted fresh. The tuna in the Spicy Tuna Roll was soft and the spice was just enough of a kick. Anyways, I like this spot.
Total: $61 (affordable during happy hour) sushi: spider roll, shrimp tempura, crunch roll, shaggy dog. The spider roll has an acquired taste. I ended up sending it back (you have to pay for it , even if you don’t like it). Everything else was good ! I recommend this place. Others: miso soup, seafood soup, Shirley temple, water.
Very good sushi. We had a great experience eating sushi and drinking saki. The all day happy hour on Saturdays and Sundays is a nice bonus. Service was spectacular handling a pretty rowdy group of six. Highly recommend.
Was in houston for a conference, stopped in for dinner and the food was amazing, the staff was on point and extremely polite. I will definantly be coming back next time im in town with the wife. She would love it. Cant reccomend this place enought.
One of my absolute favorite places to get sushi in Houston. Used to live 2 blocks from here, and now I drive over 20minutes knowing it will be worth it! Delicious appetizers and sushi rolls. You do not want to miss adding this spot on your list for sushi!
My husband and I went here for the first time last night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We'd been wanting to try it for years and finally made the time to do it. The ambience is amazing. It was a time capsule that transported us to a slower pace, simpler living, and an easygoing attitude. The prices are reasonable, the service is exceptional, and we'd love to return for another visit!
Stumbled into this bar on our walk back after a show at 713 Music Hall. Ended up sparking up a conversation with John who has worked there many years. He talked to us about the history of the bar and even gave us a little tour of the place. We were honestly blown away by his friendliness and passion for the bar. Overall a great experience. Definitely going to try and stop by next time I’m in Houston.
La Carafe is the oldest bar in Houston and well known as one of the most haunted places in the city. With immersion ambience and a laid back atmosphere, this is a perfect place for evening drinks. Make sure to check out the upstairs as that's where most of the ghost sightings have occurred!
We just happened on this place while trying to find another spot. They don’t open till 2 so that was perfect! What’s best is the atmosphere and the history! I think it’s the oldest bar in Houston. They still use the regular cash register from years back! Also has an old juckbox that works!
What a neat spot to enjoy a delicious glass of wine, enjoy some chill ambience, and listen to vintage tunes on a classic jukebox! We popped in here for a pre-dinner drink and wish we would have had more time! The wine selection was great and the vibe was perfection. Highly recommend!
Love love love this wine and beer bar. Always great interesting people in here. This bar has such history and charm. Great little place for an intimate date or just to have a relaxed evening. The upstairs patio offers a great place to sip wine and people watch. The staff is friendly and inviting.
This building has been around since the mid-1800s, and I'm a sucker for any spot with history! This spot is beer and wine ONLY and offers munchies such as chips or crisps, depending on the noun of your preference. It's a cool spot to go and chill while enjoying a cold beer or a glass of wine. Yes, some of the wines and beers offered are local. There are two levels to this location, and both offer a very cool atmosphere as there are various oddities surrounding the interior. There is patio seating on both levels, which offers nice calming views. This spot is rumored to be haunted, but I can neither confirm or deny the rumors. Stop in, take a load off, and relax. Perhaps you may have a paranormal time? Or, if anything, enjoy a good time with good people and a cool atmosphere!
Step into the enchanting world of La Carafe, a candlelit haven for sipping beer and wine, all while indulging in some ghost hunting within Houston's oldest commercial building. This cash-only bar's cozy ambiance, complete with a fantastic jukebox in the back, makes it the perfect hideaway for an intimate evening or a unique adventure with friends. Don't miss out on the chance to experience the captivating blend of history, mystery, and delightful drinks at La Carafe, a true gem in the heart of Houston.
So it all began when we choose to go out for brunch. We hit a few places before arriving here. We stayed a short period, but after leaving and waking up the next day I noticed I had misplaced my wallet and I knew I would never recover it. But a few days later, I recieved a letter from Ted, the owner he had found my wallet and told me to come and get it. I was excited and thankful for this place and for him finding it. I'm definitely a customer for life. This place is a great dive and the atmosphere is very nice and chill. The bar is well lighted with great ambiance and the history is great to learn about. I enjoyed coming here and the old cash register which must be cranked before using so you can't use card, "CASH ONLY," but it was worth the experience. This is my new favorite place to go during the week and weekend. Great staff and well priced drinks. Give it a try!
A place like no other in the city. The oldest continuously in operation commercial building in Houston. Hands down best jukebox everything from Nine In ch nails to Johnny cash.. this beer and wine only and cash only good selection of both with amazing service, friendly quick. Urban legend says haunted and occasionally you’ll run into paranormal investigators. It is romantic , great for a date or, a place to have a beer.impress out of town guests place like no other in the city. The oldest continuously in operation commercial building in Houston. Loved it. This bar was intimate, super friendly bartenders and customers. Drinks were cheap, and although the bar is very small and old, it’s clean and well maintained. I really enjoyed it here- hope I’ll be back in Houston one day to visit. One note- this is a wine and beer bar- no highballs, liquor and it is. Cash only.
Cool spot with a good happy hour and delicious sushi. I really liked the cozy vibe. Since it’s downtown, parking can be hit or miss, but it wasn’t too bad. There was valet parking in front, which I initially thought was complimentary for the restaurant, but turns out it was cash only—$20. Overall, I enjoyed the casual yet cutesy atmosphere and can see myself coming back!
Been here a handful of times now to form a opinion. The volcano roll is my bf’s ultimate favorite roll from here, I absolutely love their soft shell crab roll and hand rolls. Squid salad isn’t something I’d order again from here, but their dumplings and seaweed salad is a recommendation from me!
Tried a new place near the Wortham theater in the Theater District of Houston. Began with a cold calamari salad that was tasty, a little chewier than I prefer but still good. Followed with the shrimp fried rice and it was very good with large succulent whole and chopped shrimp mixed in. Had the Bobby roll and of course the tried but true Crunch roll along with 2 piece real crab and shrimp sushi. 🍣 Over all pleasant experience, service was attentive, courteous, and efficient. Food was satisfactory though I did feel the tempura batter may have lacked a little bit of seasoning but overall will try again and recommend.
This place was very welcoming from the moment that I walked in. The hostess was very cheerful and the server was friendly as well. He suggested the Volcano Roll based off of my tastes that I communicated. The restaurant was clean, although parking was horrible (but it is located downtown). I didn't care for how my sushi roll was falling apart, nor did I care for the rice. The rice tasted supermarket-ey. The crab wontons were pretty decent. Overall it wasn't bad for happy hour after work.
It’s a nice place with good environment. We had volcano roll (1st photo), soba noodles ( 1st photo), spring roll ( vegetarian) (2nd photo) and shrimp and vegetable tempura fry (3rd photo). Volcano roll, soba noodles and spring roll was very nice but we didn’t like tempua fry, since it didn’t have any flavour and it had very less salt. However, volcano rolls were full of flavours and it looks good also, as you can see in the photo. Soba noodles are good option, especially for vegetation people.
It's better than many restaurants that I tried before. Smiling staff with good food. Prices are reasonable. I tried hot house sake. It wasn't amazing, but it's still worth trying.
Nothing negative to say about this resto but no high praise either. The sushi rolls although a bit amateurish in size consistency were satisfactory. The calamares were delightfully crunchy but was neither chewy nor tough as well. The unagi were a bit thin but there were a lot of pieces. The katsudon was okay with a crispy salty pork and egg balanced with a blander broth-soaked rice.
We ordered sapporo delivery and it was such a dissapointment. The garlic spicy edamame was gold and soggy. Our miso soup was cold. The sashimi we ordered tasted old and the crab puffs barely had any stuffing inside. The new york roll we order also tasted old. Very disappointing.
Very rude bartender. We asked what was the strongest beer/cider they had and he listed some items but then on the second round of ordering, we asked about a cider that was strong, about 20%, and he mentioned he had it. So we asked why was that not mentioned when we asked the first time. He was so irrational to answer and got upset and kicked us out. Very rude, no respect and very erratic. Definitely never coming back.
Where to start! Been seeing this place on social media for the last few months as a haunted bar in Houston. So last night 10/31/25 me and my date decided we would stop by and check out. After walking around downtown for maybe 30/45 minutes checking things out on Halloween we made our into this establishment. It was one am so an hour to closing time. We were both dressed up in our costumes while my date when to the bathroom I sat down at the tables across from the bar waiting for her to return. I then went to the bar because no one had come to greet me or even ask if I wanted to order something. I walked up said hi to the blond female older woman bartender said I’ve never been here before and wanted to check it out. I politely asked her for a glass of water and I heard the gentleman behind the bar say I didn’t ID him which is fine because he had not asked for my ID at that point, I’m 39 so maybe my costume and the hair wig that I had on you couldn’t tell that I was of age. I went to pull out my ID to order a drink and my wallet and the lady behind the bar told me oh no we’re closed. We’ve already had our last call. I looked at my clock it was 1am on the dot. She then told me that they’ve had their last call. I said OK sat back down still waiting for my date to come out of the bathroom not two minutes later did two new guests walk in the building and she immediately served them alcohol. I approach the bar very politely and said oh can we order drinks? I thought you said it was last call. She then turned to me and said no it’s been last call for you. I didn’t want any confrontations. I just feel like you’ve been partying too much tonight and you don’t need anymore. I had not even had one drink of alcohol that entire night or day. Maybe coming in off the street a little pumped up from all the Halloween and craziness going on gave her a false impression that we were intoxicated or that I was intoxicated. After speaking with this female bartender and carrying on a conversation, it became very apparent to her that I was not intoxicated and not drunk. This was absolutely poor guest services and assuming before even having any full conversation with a patron before just deciding to say you’re intoxicated I’m not serving you. I will never be back here again. I’m a manager for a restaurant so I understand the bartenders have a right to refuse service but you did not even have enough time to interact with me or my date to know anything about us. She then started to try an apologize for her obviously wrong perception of me. I have heard about this place for a while and was so excited to be able to come here and see what this place was about. She wouldn’t even give me the time of day or anything. As a manager at a restaurant, if a guest tells me that they’ve never been to my establishment I wanna make sure that they know everything about it and what they wanted to know. This lady was so rude. And I know me not ever coming here again won’t really hurt them business wise. But what I do know as manager at a restaurant is that we always are struggling to bring in and acquire new guest and to keep them coming back to make them into regulars. She totally messed that up for the bar and this company. I see why it had six people in there maybe they are okay with mediocre service.
BEWARE: THE MANAGER WILL TAKE THIS DOWN LIKE HE DID ON YELP! When anyone leaves a review, beware that John will have an excuse rather than listen to anything constructive you have to say. We had a poor customer experience because of the lack of beer options and the fact the entire bar is extremely dirty. No this bar is not haunted, so don't go for that experience. The vibe could be amazing, but just like the manager says he's been drinking there longer than working there. This bar could be on the top 5 if they knew a good patron when they visit, cleaned the cobwebs, cleaned the lines and offered a real good selection. Hope the constructive feedback is actually looked at then coming up with excuses like every other comment. I hope this bar can turn around and be great.CAROLYN - this bar has so much potential, but John is killing the opportunity. If you’re not making 30k profit a week then you should make a change. He drinks more profits away than you show on your books! Make bars great again is our big mission. And for owners to not be taken advantage of.
